Detailed Description

Northern Morocco is a dreamy destination where beautifully diverse cultures come together in poetic harmony. Roman relics stand beside Morocco’s artisanal cradle, and famous port cities like Tangier reflect centuries of change. For more millennia, this is a region where cultures have built on each other, creating a travel destination where you can discover an incredible variety of experiences in a relatively small area. It is a destination where every turn can feel like a highlight.

To venture off the beaten track in Morocco, it is best to go north from Fes or south from Marrakesh. Of course, you can also go completely offbeat with a Saharan expedition, so you should note that you do have many other possibilities with a handcrafted tour. This one week in Morocco has been customized around northern Morocco’s eternal art and poetry with a focus on authentic experiences in culturally diverse destinations. You will fly in and out of Fes, which is the region’s main airport. Transfers between destinations are also private and flexible, and specialized guides lead you to each stop.

Fes is large. After landing, you will travel less than one hour to Meknes, which is the lesser-known of Morocco’s imperial cities. It is the country’s artisanal hub, and over two days, you will enjoy a private artisanal workshop, visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, and have two evenings in an incredibly authentic and hassle-free historic center. You will then enter the hills for a day of blue-hued delight in Chefchaouen, which is possibly the country’s most beautiful destination.

Your next stop will be Tetouan, which is a Spanish city of Moorish design in Morocco. While that combination seems bizarre, the harmonious result is quite breathtaking. On day five, you will see Tangier and its 1950’s-style US travel allure before continuing to the white-walled haven of Asilah. After five days of exploring off-the-beaten-path treasures, you will be ready for Fes, which is the world’s largest walled city. Again, a local guide will lead you to the local places so that you can experience how Fes really ticks.

Morocco Vacation Review: Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, Tangier, Cooking Class, History, Culture, Local Cuisine, Museums

Our two-week trip to Morocco, arranged by Zicasso’s travel company, was simply magical! We (a party of four over-70 Americans) found it very easy to book a customized adventure with the founder that met and exceeded our desired goals.

Our journey began with a four-night stay in Marrakech, which included a day trip to the Ourika Valley in the High Atlas Mountains. We then traveled overland to the desert (Erg Chebbi), making an overnight stop on the way to and from the luxury tented camp in Merzouga. Following a night's stay in the desert, we continued on to Fes, Chefchaouen (the “Blue City”), and Tangier. We were accompanied by an experienced English-fluent Berber driver who provided the epitome of service. Once we arrived at our destination, our driver ensured we were connected with a local guide for walking tours that were informative and fun. We were free to wander on our own as well.

To Americans contemplating a similar trip, we had two main concerns prior to leaving: the earthquake damage in and south of Marrakech, and the Middle East political situation. We encountered no problems whatsoever related to either. While in Marrakech and the Ourika Valley, we saw evidence of earthquake damage, but experienced nothing we considered a threat to our safety. Meanwhile, the beautiful Ourika Valley was one of many highlights, so we were very glad it was possible to go there. We discovered the wonderful hospitality Morocco is known for during each part of our journey.

As far as personal safety, follow the advice you would in any large city or tourist area: keep valuables safe and don't carry your cellphone in such a way that it could be easily snatched. The same goes for physical health. We followed general advice to enjoy things that were offered to us in restaurants serving tourists or as part of arranged street tours, while avoiding the temptation to try “exotic”, uncooked things we might find on our own. We ate well, enjoyed lots of mint tea, occasional alcoholic drinks, and had no major problems.

In addition to the Ourika Valley, other highlights included visiting the desert region (camel riding is optional, but a fun-filled 45 minutes if you are game), having a meal of delicious couscous in a Berber home, taking a cooking lesson in Marrakech with a chef, shopping in city souks and at the Fes leather and pottery-making establishments, and learning interesting historical facts during guided walking tours of Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, and Tangier.

If heading north, arrange to stop, if only briefly, at the seaside community of Asilah, which holds a festival each year featuring colorful street murals that remain in place until the following year. While in Tangier, tour the American Legation Museum. Among other things, you will learn about the long history of good relations between the US and Morocco, which, in 1777, was the first country to recognize the US. I could go on!

Speaking for our group, the trip was one that will remain in our memories for years to come thanks to all who were involved!

All accommodations were satisfactory. My favorite city lodgings included the riads in Marrakech and Chefchaouen, where I enjoyed a swim in the indoor pool, and the palace in Fes.

Review: Luxury Family Trip to Morocco, Fes, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Tangier, Tetouan

There are almost no words to describe the gratitude we feel for our incredible trip to Morocco. We were completely blown away by this travel agency! My husband and I, our two kids (ages 10 and 12) and a close friend just returned from our 7-day journey from Tangier to the beach near Tetouan, Chefchauen, Fes, and Rabat. From the very first phone call with our travel planner, our experience was fantastic. She listened carefully to our interests and priorities and then built a fantastic trip in our budget that WAY exceeded our expectations. As a result we had an amazing mix of cultural experiences, relaxation, unbelievable food, adventure and shopping.

The travel agency's staff were always available before and during our trip, and responded very quickly to emails and calls.  It was clear to us that they were all extremely sophisticated knowledgeable world travellers. We were especially impressed by how they thought of SO SO many details that we never even imagined would be important such as having a very comfortable mini-van with wifi, device chargers and a wide variety of snacks. They anticipated absolutely everything that we might want or need and had it all ready to go before we even thought of it. When our son had his birthday in Fes, they arranged for a variety of ways to make it special for him.

All of the Riads and the one beach resort where we stayed were breathtakingly beautiful, comfortable, safe, with all amenities, five-star food, and staff who always went way out of their way to be helpful.

The tour guides that our travel agnecy arranged spoke perfect English, and shared information that really made the country and its people come alive for us. They were never preachy or boring, and always took our lead on what we wanted to do, where we wanted to go, what we wanted to learn, and when we needed to just be quiet and process all of our rich experiences.

We cannot recommend the travel company more highly. This was truly a life-changing extraordinary experience. We all feel that we are coming home with expanded ideas of who we are and the world we live in.

Thank you!

Morocco Tour Review: Marrakesh, Imlil, Charm of Chefchaouen Village, Skoura, Fez Medina & Food
The organization was overall very efficient. All pick-ups and transfers went smoothly and the company also assisted us with tracking our misplaced luggage on arrival. The driver was very careful, attentive, and knowledgeable about the places we drove through. There were however a few disappointments. The itinerary included two nights at the hotel in Imlil, but we feel it should have been explained to us that December is the wrong time to visit it. Also, part of our reason for including this was that we had expected this stop to be a way to interrupt the long drive between Marrakesh and Skoura (we had discussed our desire not to have long unbroken drives if possible), but it turned out that the stop didn't save much driving time, given that we had to retrace our road almost back to Marrakesh before heading through the mountains to Skoura on a different road.Second, the company notified us only at the last minute that they had failed to confirm the room at the riad where we were supposed to spend our final night in Rabat, and had to book us in a different type of hotel (one that we had previously decided not to stay in, because although luxurious, it lacked the charm of a more characteristic Moroccan accommodation.) The company apologized, but this was still a disappointment. Finally, we were accompanied by a guide for more of the trip than we would have liked. The guide that was assigned to us in Fez , very knowledgeable we admit, stayed with us for the rest of the trip. This was unnecessary, as we had other local guides at several of the subsequent stops, and in the village of Chefchaouen and even Rabat we think we could have found our way pretty well on our own. We would have preferred this, as we are people relatively eager to explore on our own.

Travel Agent Review, Luxury Morocco Trip, Marrakech, Chefchaouen, Fes, Hamman Turkish Bath

The staff of the travel company who managed our trip were professional and communicated well. However, we felt that they had not visited all the hotels or eaten at the restaurants recommended to us. Perhaps they didn't know that there was a Spanish holiday when we were in Chefchaoen and that the city was overrun with visiting Spanish students. We didn't anticipate that and believe that the travel companh should have.  Our room was directly next to a terrace dining area with a large raucous party enjoying themselves till midnight.

Perhaps they should have asked if we went to night clubs at home, that would have prevented us going to a restaurant on our first night in Marrakech.

On the other hand we enjoyed several outstanding restaurants. Several hotels were excellent. The hotel in Tangier was very tasteful and stylish without being expensive.

I guess the conclusion I draw is that the travel company was inconsistent.

Morocco Review, Fes Food Tasting & Walking Tour, Agafay Desert Camel Ride, Chefchaoeun, Marrakesh, Casablanca
Overall it was a good arrangement although we had some issues with:1. the triple-sharing room arrangement - the room in Riad in Rabat was small and not meant for triple sharing. We could not only open two luggage (not 3). Agency could have arrange another Riad or let us know beforehand so we can decide to go for 2 rooms instead of 1 room. The room in Marrakech - same issue with no extra bed. My husband had to complain to Front Desk, and subsequently upgraded to a larger room. 2. The tasting tour in Fes which I have complained separately via email. Agency should put into consideration that the morning tour was already a 3 hours walking tour, and then followed by another 2 hours walking food tasting tour in the SAME area, for the same kind of food we had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Anyway, the agency is working on the refund.Note: If agency did not propose this tasting tour, we would have opted to leave after lunch from FES to Casablanca (3 hours journey) and stay 1 night in Casablanca. This is because the journey next day from Fes to Marrakech was 6 HOURS. In fact, I did highlight to the agency that I do not want to spend too long hours on the road, and even asked to take flight from Fes to Marrakech. I think the driver was also tired and we had a minor accident on the road in Marrakech which injured my forehead. I didnt make a fuss on this. I have to say the driver and guide is GOOD, so no complaints on this.3. The journey from Chefchaoeun to Volubilis - we reached Volubilis at almost 2pm++ and had a short visit only because we were already very hungry and hot. By 3pm, the guide said we had to drive another 45mins or so for lunch... which we couldnt accept and asked for lunch at the nearest place - Moulay Idriss. The local restaurant was full of flies but we had no choice but to eat. The agency could have make a better planning on this as we dont take lunch at 4pm!!4. During the first concall, I did ask to visit some other places of interest when in Marrakech (for example, Ait Ben Haddou) but was told there is insufficient time. However, for the few days we had in Marrakech, we are practically free after lunch with nothing to do and just returned to hotel to rest till dinner. I feel the agency could have optimise the itinerary better.

Luxury Morocco Travel Review: Marrakech, Chefchaouen, Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Ouarzazate, Dadès Gorge, Atlas Mountains, Meknes
Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Aït Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Valley of 1000 Kasbahs - Rose Valley - Dadès Gorges - Merzouga/ Erg Chebbi (Sahara) - Erfoud - Midelt - Mid Atlas Mountains - Fez - Meknes - Volubilis - Rif Mountains - Chefchaouen - Rabat - Casablanca - MarrakechOn our way home from 12 gorgeous and full days of introduction to a new world, totally unknown to us. What a surprise…. At every corner. A country that amazed us in so many ways with its orgy of colors, smells and tastes. A country that we were lucky to get to know and love with our amazing guide of our travel company, who taught us so much, while tirelessly driving hundreds of kilometers almost every day through ever changing landscapes. We got a glimpse of Morocco through its valleys, mountains, deserts, ancient Medinas, big cities and small Amazirgh (Berber) villages by foot, camels and car but also by our guide’s stories, answers to million questions, by meeting other guides and mostly smiley, welcoming people you meet everywhere. A country that fascinated us not only by its landscapes but by its culture, history, contradictions and disparities; by the beauty in peoples eyes and smiles. We are grateful for this truly enriching experience.
