Damaraland - The Surreal Splendor
Landing at Hosea Kutako International Airport gives you an impression of how private and uninhabited Namibia is going to be. It feels more like a provincial village airport, not one for a capital city. Meet with your Land Rover and the feeling of getting away is quickly reconfirmed. You’re driving towards Damaraland and already there’s virtually nothing but wilderness. The odd farmhouse whizzes by, a springbok skips onto deserted plains, and a dragon’s tail of mountain peaks guides your journey. Within an hour of landing you’re engulfed in Namibia’s captivating riddle; the landscapes are never monotonous but you find it impossible to elucidate how each vista is different.
Damaraland could be simplified. It’s just desert, valley, and rock. But what rocks! And what desert! Burning red and rising almost 200 meters above the plains, the strange domes of Spitzkoppe hide ancient rock art and glorious hiking trails. Wind around and up Brandberg Mountain to watch the desert unfurl onto the horizon, a kaleidoscope of color elegantly meandering across your panorama. Stop and listen. Silence. Train your ears to these new impressions of tranquility. Somewhere far away there is noise. Look up, look around, and an elephant plods along, making its long journey through Damaraland.
This is a landscape for exploring, for roaming on foot, by bike, or in your Land Rover. Ogle the ancient rock art in Twyfelfontein, the diagrammatic stories of ancestral Bushmen as poignant today as they’ve ever been. Stop for a picnic and gouge yourself on the views, not a single manmade creation in 360º of diaphanous beauty. Of course you don’t need to explore. From your raised wooden suite at your camp, there’s an almost mythical view, one that should feature on some space-based Hollywood epic. It’s an idyllic first stop for rest and flight recuperation, only a few noisy kudu interrupting the repose.

Zicasso’s tour company did an outstanding job planning our three-week vacation and safari through South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Our agent patiently worked with us through a number of iterations.
The selected lodges and hotels were immaculate. The service at each lodge was second to none. The activity schedules were planned accurately. Our guides, rangers, pilots, and many others involved in our activities were knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and had a high degree of experience. We always felt safe and well taken care of.
While our planned schedule was tight, we never felt pressured or stressed by the local tour guides. Our agent’s planning allowed us to maximize our experience. For instance, making sure we get to Inyati in time for the afternoon game drive on the day of arrival. She was always on top, checking in multiple times and making sure we got the best service possible.
We can strongly recommend our travel company, specifically our agent, and thank them for making this trip unforgettable.

I had the absolute best time! Everything went so smoothly and I could not have asked for a nicer trip. I've traveled a lot, using Zicasso many times, and this trip, by far, shoots to the top of the list.

We worked with Zicasso's travel partner to plan a trip around a seven-night sail in the Seychelles. After sailing, we followed the itinerary we put together with our agent to Namibia and Botswana. We had a glitch in Namibia with a scenic flight of the Skeleton Coast that did not go as planned. I made contact with our agent and over a couple of days, he forged a solution that fixed the oversight by one of his vendors.
We enjoyed the desert lodge very much. It was a first-class and beyond operation. We also really enjoyed Sossusvlei. We were not happy with our shared guided rides as we were with parents and their 11-year-old only child who ran their lives. It affected us on our tour of Sossusvlei in that we were left alone without a guide for three hours to hike Deadvlei while they unsuccessfully attempted to hike Big Daddy. The longest anyone takes to do that hike is an hour and three quarters. They only made it halfway and were gone for three hours.
We were not thrilled with the two-hour, very rugged ride from and back to the airstrip to the camp, but we did enjoy the camp very much. In hindsight, if we had known the ride would be dissatisfying, we would have likely opted for a different accommodation. This said, the private rides in the Hoanib Valley were unique and very satisfying.
We loved that as much as both of our camps in Botswana, which were in the Okavango Delta and in quite different environments. The camp was wonderful. The highlight of our trip came at our last camp in Botswana. We really enjoyed this area of the Delta in that it had a lot of water. This created a very unique guided driving experience. The safari rides were arguably the best we’ve ever done as we witnessed three warthog kills by lions. We almost witnessed a fourth, of a lechwe by a hyena.
What made this camp a cut above the rest was the food and overall culinary approach of the executive chef. He was at the top of his game. This camp also offered surprise after surprise to make us feel special – lunch in the field, a private dinner in our room, bubble bath, etc.
Our travel agent put together an incredible itinerary and trip. He too was at the top of his game!
