Detailed Description
While New Zealand’s North Island is bucolic, the South Island is framed by some of the planet’s most dramatic landscapes. Snow-capped mountains soar more than 12,000 feet into the sky, mysterious fjords line the coastline, and rays flitter through tidal pools in the tropical waters. Few people actually live on South Island, and the experience is mostly about untouched nature as you discover the ultimate highlights of Te Wahipounamu, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to half a dozen national parks.
Handcrafted with private activities and transfers, this luxurious 9-day South Island tour will showcase the best of the island’s nature, from Queenstown to Abel Tasman National Park. You will be sleeping on fjords, hiking on glaciers, kayaking and hiking along the coast, and exploring landscapes that few others have even seen. Your first four nights will be spent in Queenstown and Fiordland. The town is an ideal location to serve as your base and to relax after your long flight. Here, Lord of the Rings filming locations and a jetboat ride will be just two of your experiences. From here, you will explore Doubtful Sound and spend the night in the mist and mystery before indulging in a scenic helicopter flight over Fiordland, which will allow you to land on a glacier.
From Queenstown to Abel Tasman is about a half-day of driving, but it is one of the world’s ultimate road trips with almost the entire road being inside national parks. The road is practically empty, and a private trip means that there will be dozens of places you can stop and explore on foot. Franz Josef Glacier will be your halfway point, and, here, you can hike on a glacier that falls through the rainforest to the beach. Then, in Abel Tasman National Park, you will have completed the transition from snowy scenes to tropical waters. Turquoise tones will take over, and you will be able to fully embrace another side to the South Island. This is the perfect standalone New Zealand trip for nature lovers and can be handcrafted further with experiences to include the North Island as well.

My husband and I went on a wonderful trip to New Zealand visiting both North and South Island. The trip was originally planned for 2021 but had to be postponed until this year. I prefer working with an agent, and Lindsay from our travel agency was extremely responsive, offering helpful options and suggestions. Even though the time we spent on the North Island was right after the torrential rains, we modified the itinerary to spend four days in the Taupo area and two days in Rotorua.
We hiked in the Tongariro National Park and part of the Great Lake Pathway, sailed to view the Maori Rock Carvings, and visited Orakei Korako geothermal pools and Huka Falls in the Lake Taupo area. In Rotorua, we relaxed in the mineral pools of the spa and enjoyed the indigenous Maori experience at Te Puia.
The next 12 days were spent on the South Island where we had sunny and warm weather! One of our favorite places was Abel Tasman Park where we went kayaking and hiked the beautiful Coast Trek. We continued our adventures with a memorable heli-hiking experience on the Tasman Glacier in the Mt. Cook region, followed by visiting the unique blue penguins and Royal Albatrosses on the Otago Peninsula and enjoyed a hike and cruise on the famous Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park.
We ended our journey with three days in the Lake Wanaka area where we kayaked, hiked, and visited some of the region's famous wineries.

This travel agent and the travel company team were out of this world! They crafted an amazing four-week adventure for us in New Zealand and Fiji. We started in Te Anau, NZ, where we focused on hiking and boating to both the Milford and Doubtful Sounds. We flew from Te Anau to the Nelson area at the top of the south island and fell in love with Mapua, located just 30 minutes from Nelson. We explored the Abel Tasman area extensively there. Next, we traveled (by plane again) to Russell, just across the way from Pahia and Kerikeri. It was a dream of a place, and we continued to hike, sail, and eat amazing food and drink delicious wines. Our accommodations couldn't have been better! Our travel company thought of everything! Last stop was Fiji - this their idea - make a stop in a super relaxing place on the way home back to Texas. The resort was out of a picture book - we had an extraordinary villa with our own plunge pool - the service, food, and staff were beyond amazing. We highly recommend this company - even when we had a travel snag, our agent answered his cell straight away and was on call to help us get to a solution. Can't say enough good things about him and his team!

Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.
For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.
The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound. I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!
