Day 1

Lima – Sunset Dinner Beside the Pacific Ocean

Your family will grow giddy with excitement as your plane steadily coasts along the tarmac at Jorge Chávez International Airport. Your Peruvian adventure is just about to begin. As you exit customs, you will meet your private driver who will escort you to your hotel. In the moments that follow, you will bump down the cobbled streets of post-colonial Lima and then wind down the scenic coastlines that hug jagged seaside cliffs. Wafting smells of beachy saltwater and the citrusy lemon-lime of ceviche will have the whole family peaking their heads out every window. The honks and whistles of frenzied traffic will make way for the subdued tranquility of cooing seagulls and melodic busking duets.

Soon, you will arrive at your luxurious hotel in the sophisticated neighborhood of Miraflores where white skyscrapers line the picturesque shorelines and locals lounge in the meticulously manicured parks nearby. In the evening, street lights illuminate pedestrian roads and families dine at beautiful restaurant patios that overlook the Pacific. As a family, you will get your first taste of authentic local cuisine: crunchy fresh seafood or crispy blackened chicken. You can top off the night with a light gelato or milky ice cream treat at one of many outdoor cafes that line the downtown area. In the evening, you will return to the hotel and rest for tomorrow’s full day of lively sightseeing.

Detailed Description

Your two-week long journey to the birthplace of the Inca Empire is sure to be a whirlwind of an adventure. As you and your family descend on one of the most diverse countries in the world, you will uncover fascinating cultures and unparalleled landscapes. Travel by plane, train, boat, and even a thrilling zipline ride as you traverse the coastal planes, rugged mountain peaks, serene valleys, and dense jungles of this remarkable country.

You will start your journey in Lima, which is the nation’s bustling capital. Soon, make your way south to the desert oasis of Huacachina and put your footwork to the test as you learn to sandboard. Later, venture to one of the most remote corners of the world: the Amazon. It is an idyllic place to check out rare and native species. You will also get a chance to visit a rainforest conservation center where you will zipline past macaws in the canopy layer high above. After a short overnight trip to the southeast city of Puno, you will embark on a day-long cruise around Lake Titicaca and discover its curious “floating islands.”

Over the next few days, you will settle in at the former capital of the Inca Empire. Cusco’s rich blend of indigenous Andean culture mixed with Spanish colonialism of the 1500s and 1600s make for truly amazing architectural design. Next, wind your way through the Sacred Valley as you unearth details about ancient agricultural practices, military expertise, and spiritual beliefs of the Andean people. The climax of this trip takes place at the ruins of Machu Picchu among the seven of the new world wonders, which is the crown atop Peru’s countless sparkling gems.  Don’t take just our word for it - consider reading some of our travelers’ reviews of Peru, and see how you can customize your own dream vacation.

Luxury South America Honeymoon Review: Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Rio de Janeiro, Machu Picchu, Nazca Lines

Our trip to South America had been in the pipeline for several years so when it came to putting it into actuality we wanted to make sure that it was just right. We hunted around to find a travel agent who could tailor a package to suit our needs. We came up with a list of 4 travel agents in 4 different countries but eventually we chose this travel agency. Our decision was based on  the the travel agency's approachability (whenever we emailed a question we always received an immediate and comprehensive response); also our agency's flexibility in being able to add or alter different options, and their friendly and helpful advice. Our contact was with Heather who made herself available to chat on Skype at all times. (It is very reassuring to be able to personalise travel arrangements - it makes it seem less like dealing with an anonymous organisation and more like chatting with a friend and mentor.)Our agent provided us with a comprehensive written itinerary which left nothing in doubt. She organised all transfers, internal flights, tours with local operators (some private, some group). At one stage when demonstrations in Cusco interrupted train and bus services, Heather immediately stepped in to organise suitable alternatives. We understand that other tourists did not fair so well and were stranded on train platforms or forced to pay for exorbitant hotel accommodation. Our 43-day tour included visits to 6 countries -  Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil. Right from the onset in Quito we were met by a wonderful guide who shared his knowledge of Ecuador - its geology, its history, its politics and its food. Our agent marked the beginning of a series of friendly, well informed and entertaining tour guides from the different regions we visited. We had an amazing holiday visiting all the well known tourist sites - Galapagos, Machu Picchu, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Iguasu Falls and Rio de Janeiro. And a few maybe a little less touristy such as Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, the Peruvian Amazon basin, Nazca lines and the Bolivian Salt Lake of Uyuni. When we used bus transport it was reasonably comfortable, hotel accommodation was always clean and comfortable and airport transfers were always on time. All hotels included breakfast which naturally varied from one hotel to another but it was always quite adequate and healthy. At different times when other meals were provided such as on the Galapagos cruise, in the Amazon Basin, on Lake Titicaca and during the Sacred Valley tour the quality of the food was quite impressive. We are now considering another visit to South America - this time to Patagonia and we will definitely be looking at involving this travel agency again with our trip arrangements.Muchas gratias!

Review: Father-Daughter Trip to Peru, Sacred Valley, Cusco, Lima, Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, History, Culture, Wildlife

This travel agency and it's owner/agent planned a fabulous Peru vacation for us (July 2018).  I'm impressed by the flexibility, customization, experience, and recommendations our travel agent provided.  He followed through with attention to all details, and he was available and expertly made required itinerary changes when we missed our connecting flight.

We chose the destinations, hotel star level, and duration (13 days).  Our travel agent then made the itinerary proposals, giving us guidance and input.  We chose to visit the Amazon jungle and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, staying in 4 star hotels.  We went to Tambopata and stayed at the Refugio Amazonas jungle lodge for 3 nights.  The lodge and its surroundings are beautiful.  The macaw clay lick tour is not to be missed.  We then visited charming Cusco for 2 days, allowing us to acclimate to the altitude (11,000 feet) for our trek.  We had great private tours of Cusco and the Sacred Valley with guides from the tour company.  We then had a fabulous 4 day private Inca Trail Trek, also guided by our tour company.  The hotel in Cusco was very nice and well positioned in the historic district.  Our travel agent's choice of a suite at the hotel in Aguas Clients after the trek was a luxurious treat after camping.

I give this travel company my highest recommendation.  The trip was first rate, well planned, well supported, and a good value.  I also enthusiastically recommend traveling to Peru; the sites are spectacular, the people are friendly and honest, the food is very good, and we felt safe throughout our trip.  It was a exhilarating, memorable vacation.

Travel Review: Peru Solo Tour, Puno, Sacared Valley, Pisac, Cusco, Pisac, Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca

I loved my trip to Peru! My travel agency's suggestions and arrangements were for the most part excellent.  I traveled solo for 11 days and visited Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca.

My hotel in Cuzco  was comfortable, though I wished it were a little closer to the Plaza..  The first morning in Cuzco, my wake-up call was somehow forgotten, and the first call I got was from my guide telling me she was downstairs waiting for me.  She told me to relax and we would work things out, and to take my time.  We left late, but it didn't detract from wonderful ceremony with a local shaman.  We drove up above Cuzco and hiked up to a spot where Asencio performed a ceremonial blessing with my guide translating his words.  An unforgettable and moving experience that's difficult to describe!  My guide was superb!

From there I traveled by bus with a group to the Sacred Valley, stopping at Pisac, a colorful market, and Ollayntaytambo (both worth seeing!) before settling into my hotel, a former convent with beautiful gardens and a chapel right next door.

The following day I rock-climbed for the first time.  Gorgeous views of the Sacred Valley and river running through it, while climbing 1300 feet up the rock face!  This isn't for those who fear heights, but if you don't, this is a fantastic way to climb for the first time, then descend via 6 zip lines!  A must do!

Traveling to Machu Picchu via Vistadome was next on the itinerary.  The train was first-class---very comfortable, with excellent service.  The vistadome allows passengers to see the amazing views of the Andes while en route to Agua Calientes and Machu Picchu.  Upon arrival I was greeted by our guide who arranged for bags to go to the hotel, and led us to the bus that takes you to Machu Picchu.  I knew Machu Picchu would be amazing and it didn't disappoint. No words really to describe its beauty. I opted to go back the second day without a guide to continue exploring on my own.

After a return train trip to Cuzco, I left the following day for an all-day bus ride to Puno that included stops at varied and interesting sights--a beautiful church with painted ceilings, a colonial bridge, a pre-Incan temple, at the top of the pass (over 14,400 feet), a tasty lunch buffet where we were serenaded by Peruvian music and more.

After an overnight in Puno, I was picked up at the hotel and taken to the dock for an overnight stay on Amantani Island.  Unfortunately, the transfer process broke down. These guides seemed to be subcontracted by my travel agency and had a different company name. The guide left me with the driver who was supposed to connect me with the group and the boat I was going to take.  The guide seemed overbooked, and the driver disappeared while I was buying gifts for the host family, and I was left wandering around the dock with a crowd of people and unmarked boats, not knowing where to go.  I finally asked one of the vendors to make a call and I eventually figured out which boat I was supposed to be on.  Once settled on the boat, I thoroughly enjoyed the visits to Uros and Taquile and the overnight on Amantani was fascinating and a wonderful ending to my Peruvian trip!

Strengths:

Overall,my travel agency did a great job of arranging a customized trip for me.  I'm not one for extended group tours and this itinerary allowed me to have just the right combination of tours and solo time.  Guides were excellent--knowledgeable, courteous.  I ended up changing my itinerary pretty late in the game and my agency was very accommodating which was very much appreciated.I felt I got great value overall for the price.

Suggestions:

I wished I had my travel documents in hand before arriving in Peru. I would have felt more comfortable with having them before I left the US. Transfers could be better organized.  I had difficulty finding my travel agency in a crowd of 50-70 or more signs.  Maybe use a sign that would stand out?  Also during the transfer process at the Puno harbor, the guide turned over to the driver who spoke no English and then disappeared, leaving me with no information about where to go.Hotels selected could have been closer to the main parts of town so that walking could have been a better option.

Peru 11-Day Tour Review: Amazon, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Local Cuisine, Assisting Community Children, Salt Mines, Sites & Culture

First of all - Peru is an amazing country, rich with colorful culture, people and food. I was going there with my lovely wife with usual preparation information gleaned from the internet through various sites and excitement as we prepared for South American Amazon and Machu Picchu, Cusco, Sacred Valley stops on an 11 day journey.Little did I know, I would be immersed in an experience of sight, sound, taste and feel - a journey that caused many moments of deep reflection, appreciation, gratitude, and love for humanity. A huge part of this gratitude for putting together this opportunity goes to our new friends our travel planners at this travel company. They organized a wonderful cross dimensional trip across the jungle and arid lands this country offers, where we had personal and personable, highly intelligent and knowledgeable guides that left us speechless at times as we absorbed all the cultural teachings, offerings (in Spanish and English). One travel planner even met us on our last full day to personally escort our visit with the lovely teachers and children of local village house – an educational charity working in the small town of Oropesa and other villages in the surrounding rural area 25km outside of Cusco, Peru. The charity offers a comprehensive afterschool program in academic and non-academic subjects, along with helping the children with their homework, which takes the burden off the parents. Thank you so so much!!

Our travel planner organized beautiful, amazing tours with Excellent guides: Amazon lodge stay and a local tour company (loved our new friend and guide); Sacred Valley, Maras Salt mines, Moray Ruins, Cusco Community Home visit (so special, honored new friend and guide); Machu Picchu guided tour and next day Sun Gate ascend and walk down to town; Cusco 2 day visit with a San Pedro Market tour and Amazing cooking class (with honored new friend and guide/professional chef).

We HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this travel company for Peru, and we intend to schedule future Galapagos, Brazil, Chile or Argentina trips with them also – thank you guys so so much!! Words will never express our feelings of gratitude and great fortune working with and getting to know you both (especially our planner – you’re an excellent driver BTW !)

Lastly and Importantly: Bring an appetite to experience the amazingly, indescribable flavors of this country – from the earth to plate, sprinkled with local and unbelievable spiced, herbed flavor diversity, there is a treasure to be had in the various dishes and preparations that reflect local historical significance. We had amazing food throughout our journey and encourage all who visit to expand their heart mind and pallet to capture the culinary opportunity that abounds in Peru!!

Our travel agent was great - she was very responsive and efficient in creating a trip exactly as we were hoping to have it. We truly had an unforgettable experience once we wer in Peru.
