Lima - 12-Course Culinary Introductions at Astrid and Gaston

In Lima there will a bit of hustle and bustle. Here, colonial grandeur meets with towering apartment blocks and Pacific waves. At first glance, it will seem like an odd place for a culinary capital, especially with all the honking on the streets. Fresh seafood comes in from the Pacific each morning, and some of it is used for the city’s most famous lunchtime dish, ceviche, which is raw fish cured in lemon juice. Regular flights will land in the capital from across the country, bringing flavors from different Amazonian regions as well as high up in the Andes.

Tomorrow you will start sampling raw ingredients in Lima’s markets. This tour’s introduction will come at a restaurant that celebrates diversity in its widest form. Twelve courses will be served on the tasting menu and these tend to change each day, reflecting what has come in from the market that morning. You will not recognize many of the flavors, but you will be only tasting and enjoying. Over the next few days you will separate individual components, but for now there will be nothing to do but indulge on the final fusion that Peru creates.

Detailed Description

To the international scene, Peruvian cuisine is part wonder and part myth. Although widely celebrated across the globe, it is very difficult to taste authentic Peruvian food outside of the country. One reason for this is because part of the culinary secret lies in the raw ingredients, which are both inimitable and incredibly fresh. For example, fresh seafood comes in from the Pacific Ocean each morning. Nowhere but in Peru can you have fresh Amazon, Andean, and Pacific ingredients every single day.

The flavors they can create are also very unique, especially in the hands of Peru’s latest generation of chefs. With so many different ingredients around, you must be highly creative to make it as a chef here. Those most celebrated have found international acclaim, creating menus that change each day, not just each season. Some have helped create entire new styles of cooking, such as the Japanese-Peruvian fusion known as Nikkei. Others have brought French or Italian training to this great pantry of ingredients. There really is no gastronomic scene like it.

Mixing markets and restaurants, cooking workshops and local fusions, this private tour will celebrate why Peru is now a world-famous food lover’s destination. You will explore markets and sample rare Amazonian and Andean flavors. Dinner reservations will take you to Latin America’s finest restaurants, and workshops will show you how to make Peruvian style ceviche, Pisco, home-style Quechua cooking, and old-world Peruvian staples. There will be a day that is dedicated to Nikkei, and in between it all, there will be a day spent at Machu Picchu. Cusco and the Urubamba Valley will provide cultural highlights as well in order to contrast the neighborhoods and UNESCO World Heritage of Lima. This is a food lover’s tour and over the ten days you will find an incredible delicacy and lightness to all the food.

Lima must be the focus of any Peruvian culinary tour. It has Latin America’s most celebrated dining scene and the most eclectic range of flavors. You will spend the first three days here, with a 12-course dinner at Astrid & Gaston, which will be your culinary introduction. You will then explore a local market and make ceviche on day two. Classic country staples will be the focus of day three. Days four and five will be spent in Cusco, which is a city of rich cultural highlights and a harmonious mix of culinary influence. You can cook and eat Quechua style in the Urubamba Valley on day six before day seven takes you to Machu Picchu. As you finish back in Lima, you will have an Amazon fusion dinner, a Pisco tasting class, and day nine full of wit Nikkei cuisine. This tour will have you enjoying the food so much that when you are searching for Peruvian food back at home, you will understand why the country’s food can only truly be tasted where you have just traveled.  Consider learning more about the Peru tour companies whom we partner with, who seek to create a customized experience just for you.

Review: Family Trip to Peru, Cusco, Lima, Chincheros, Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Machu Picchu, Sungate Hike, Wildlife, Culture

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Peru this February. We are so thankful for our travel agent for making a perfect itinerary for our family of four. She was great to work with. Having read variety of things about Peru on the internet, we were extremely anxious especially for a February trip. We called our agent many times prior to the trip and she reassured us. She was always there to answer all of our questions.  Her itinerary was perfect as we were gradually acclimatized to the high elevations of Cusco.

In Peru, we were very well taken care of, right from the moment we stepped out at Lima airport. At both Lima and Cusco airports, we were greeted by happy and welcoming people. In Lima, our guide was accommodating, friendly and funny. In Cusco, our guide and our driver made us feel very comfortable. They accommodated all of our requests. At  no point of time were we rushed to do things. The Cusco guide is well informed and sincere in her tasks. She is clearly passionate about her country and its rich culture and heritage. She gave us detailed accounts of Incan history, artifacts and ruins. She got very friendly with our two kids. We had wonderful time hiking to Sungate and Inca bridge. We felt like we had travelled in the past. The ruins are spectacular and the travel team made a life time experience. The hotels chosen were excellent. Our agent also booked our lunches in wonderful restaurants with ethnic Peruvian ambiance. Our family had special time interacting with weaver family  in Chincheros. Overall Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Urubamba are wonderful places to visit. It does take you to different time period. We were told by many to avoid the month of February due to rainy season but ended up having a lovely weather the entire week. The highlight of our Machu Picchu trip was seeing a rainbow over the ruins. This has been an unforgettable experience for us!

Travel Review: Peru Family Vacation, Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Urubamba White Water Rafting, Mara Salt Mines

We just returned from a 10 day trip to Peru with 15 family members. Our agent worked with me to plan every detail of the trip.   Everything went according to schedule and without a single hitch!  Our agent lined up a trip to satisfy every single member in our group ages 71 to 10.  We will never forget this trip of a lifetime!  The trip was planned so that we could adjust to the elevation appropriately.  We started with 3 days, 2 nights in the Amazon jungle.  The resort we stayed at and the activities planned were awesome!  The food was good too.  The kids, ages 10-18 loved that part of the trip the best.  We moved on to the Sacred Valley for 4 days, day 1 full day touring at Pisac ruins, Ollantaytambo ruins, day 2 full day touring included Chincero weaving demonstration, Moray ruins & Mara salt mines, day 3 was horseback riding for 11 in our group and the other 4 went whitewater rafting on the Urubamba river, and day 4 was our trip to Machu Picchu.  We moved on to Cusco for 2 nights.  Our first full day in Cusco, we did a 1/2 day tour, and a late afternoon chocolate making event for 1 hour at the Choco Museo.  The next morning we left for Lima, spent 1 night in Lima and did a 1/2 day city tour.  We had the afternoon free and headed to the airport by 7:00 pm for our flights back to the U.S.  We were met by representatives at every location at the times stated.  All our tours were private for our group and the guides were awesome.  The food was so tasty throughout our trip.  Our agent made reservations in advance for our dinners.  Be flexible.  We are used to eating lunches around noon, but while touring, most lunches were around 2-3 pm in the afternoon.  We did have protein bars that we packed in our backpack.  Bonus item working with this agent....my husband had requested a surprise birthday cake for me at the restaurant in our Sacred Valley hotel. Our agent personally ordered a cake from a known bakery in Cusco and drove 1.5-2 hours to our hotel to personally deliver it with a nice birthday present!  That is going way above and beyond!  It was a pleasure meeting him in person!  I would not hesitate to recommend this agent and his company for any travel in South America!

Highly recommend (already have!) this travel agency and will use again for future travel!

Luxury Peru Family Vacation Review: Cuzco, Lima, Aguas Calientes, Sacred Valley, Puerto Maldonado, Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu Trek

We would highly recommend this Peru travel company to help you to organize your trip.  We came back from a two week-long trip to Peru a few days ago.  We have been independent travelers in the past so this was our first experience in being accompanied by guides for a good part of the vacation.  Paul from this agency contracted with the local tour operator to arrange transportation and guides.  His dossier contained everything we needed to know, including suggestions for tipping, places to enjoy a delicious meal, and more.  All of our guides  were very intelligent, passionate about what they did, had a great deal of pride for their country, and highly knowledgeable about the sites, history, culture, and traditions of their country.  We not only enjoyed the tours, but also learned quite a bit about the Peruvian educational and political systems through our discussions.  The guides were respectful and easy to share our time with.  My only complaint is that their English was so good that we were less apt to use Spanish, although that was counterbalanced by their willingness to teach us a little Quechua!  Special kudos to our guide who supported us when one family member became ill enough with altitude sickness to have to stay overnight at a clinic/hospital.  We traveled to Lima, Cusco, Aguas Calientes, Sacred Valley, and Puerto Maldonado.  While we enjoyed some activities in Lima, we probably could have shortened our three night stay there to either venture to another location or stay longer in one of the other places.  Cusco was simply lovely and we had great meals and tours there and in the Sacred Valley.  We were treated to a delicious lunch at a new place right outside of Moray.  We loved seeing Machu Picchu but also were glad that we stayed an extra day to climb Huayna Picchu.  Our stay in Puerto Maldonado was lots of fun--our days were full with many ecoguide-led outdoor activities, including a hot trek through mud to a boat ride (fun!!), a nighttime walk, a canopy walk, and boat rides (looking for caimans at night was a highlight).  Overall, we had an excellent trip which would not have been possible without Paul's help.  He listened well to our wishes, made suggestions based upon what we said, and arranged for wonderful accommodations for our family.  We suggest that you use this travel agency to book your next adventure.  And also highly suggest that you consider Peru as a fun and varied country to visit!

Peru Travel Review: Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Aguas Caliente, Puerto Maldonado, Sacred Valley, Amazon, Private Ruins Tours

We were extremely happy with every aspect of our trip to Peru and the outstanding assistance and support by Stuart, Satish and others at our Peru travel agency. We flew directly to Cusco and spent two nights there seeing the various sites in and around the city with a private guide, then a private guided tour to the Sacred Valley by van spending the night in Ollantaytambo. The next morning we took the train to Machu Picchu and had a private tour of the ruins followed by a stay in the wonderful Inkaterra MP Pueblo. The following day we took the train from Aguas Caliente to Cusco - a very pleasant and comfortable way to travel. The next morning we were off to the airport traveling to Puerto Maldonado for a three night stay in the Inkaterra Amazonica Reserva. We had wonderful guides with a special hats off to Jorge in Cusco and SV. Our MP guide was also excellent. We had terrific support getting around in all the locations and would highly recommend this travel company to not only our friends but to all who consider traveling to and about Peru!

Luxury Peru Mother/Daughter Vacation Review: Urubamba, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Inca Trail Hike, 8-Night Tour

Overall, our time in Peru was full of new and wonderful experiences. We were able to see wonderful parts of nature in the Amazon, stayed in fabulous hotels in Urubamba and Cusco, did the one-day Inca trail hike to an unforgettable Machu Picchu view, and more.

It did take a while to get the “feel” of our trip set up correctly, and in the end, I think we should have shortened it by one day, but we were able to experience all the things we hoped for.
