Detailed Description
Machu Picchu emerges from mountain mist far more beautiful than the photos could ever suggest. Cusco is a remarkable place where a cathedral is built upon an Incan temple and the streets are packed with colors. Then, there is all the history that surrounds Cusco, such as the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. You cannot forget about Lima. While the more famous Peruvian highlights are in the Andean mountains, the capital city still has plenty of highlights for you.
These destinations combine effortlessly on a 10-day trip to Peru. Direct flights will make light work of the long distances, so you can quickly hop from Lima to Arequipa and then from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Private tours will allow you explore at your pace, with flexibility over the amount of walking and the number of sites that you will visit each day. A handpicked selection of fine hotels will provide space to relax while continuing the cultural journey with Peruvian entertainment and foods. There is no rush, so you can relax, take it slow, and immerse yourself in the culture and discover what makes Peru such a unique country.
This tour has been handcrafted for senior travelers, and the route is carefully designed to maximize altitude acclimatization, which will assist you in overcoming the challenges of the thin mountain air. Many senior visitors are naturally worried about altitude in the Andean Mountains, especially Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is not a potential problem for altitude sickness, but Cusco is, so it is important for senior travelers to end, rather than to start, in Cusco. You may notice that this is the opposite direction to most tours as most start in Cusco and then wind their way towards the Lost City of the Incas.
Traveling the other way around will provide the best altitude acclimatization. At an altitude of 7,660 feet, Arequipa will be a beautiful place to start, which is below the danger zone for altitude sickness. Next, you will spend leisurely days in the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Urubamba Valley), with hardly any exertion, and an altitude of around 9,000 feet. Machu Picchu will follow. The Lost City is actually lower, at just under 8,000 feet above sea level. You will have to walk in order to see the site, but your lungs will already be accustomed to the higher altitude. You will finish in Cusco, where the altitude climbs to over 11,000 feet. By then, you will have had six days at higher elevations, which will helps negate the risk.
If you have limited mobility, most of the sites on this tour can still be visited. You can explore the Sacred Valley in a private vehicle, getting out at small ruins, markets, and salt pans. A tour in Cusco can be carefully designed to minimize walking as well, especially uphill walking. In Machu Picchu you will need to walk but it is really not as tough as stereotypes suggest. Yes, the steps can be steep, but even a marathon runner would not want to rush through this. On this tour for senior travelers, you will have plenty of time to walk at your own pace, which is recommended as it helps you fully absorb the intimate details of Machu Picchu and the other Andean highlights. We just returned from a 10 day trip to Peru with 15 family members. Our agent worked with me to plan every detail of the trip. Everything went according to schedule and without a single hitch! Our agent lined up a trip to satisfy every single member in our group ages 71 to 10. We will never forget this trip of a lifetime! The trip was planned so that we could adjust to the elevation appropriately. We started with 3 days, 2 nights in the Amazon jungle. The resort we stayed at and the activities planned were awesome! The food was good too. The kids, ages 10-18 loved that part of the trip the best. We moved on to the Sacred Valley for 4 days, day 1 full day touring at Pisac ruins, Ollantaytambo ruins, day 2 full day touring included Chincero weaving demonstration, Moray ruins & Mara salt mines, day 3 was horseback riding for 11 in our group and the other 4 went whitewater rafting on the Urubamba river, and day 4 was our trip to Machu Picchu. We moved on to Cusco for 2 nights. Our first full day in Cusco, we did a 1/2 day tour, and a late afternoon chocolate making event for 1 hour at the Choco Museo. The next morning we left for Lima, spent 1 night in Lima and did a 1/2 day city tour. We had the afternoon free and headed to the airport by 7:00 pm for our flights back to the U.S. We were met by representatives at every location at the times stated. All our tours were private for our group and the guides were awesome. The food was so tasty throughout our trip. Our agent made reservations in advance for our dinners. Be flexible. We are used to eating lunches around noon, but while touring, most lunches were around 2-3 pm in the afternoon. We did have protein bars that we packed in our backpack. Bonus item working with this agent....my husband had requested a surprise birthday cake for me at the restaurant in our Sacred Valley hotel. Our agent personally ordered a cake from a known bakery in Cusco and drove 1.5-2 hours to our hotel to personally deliver it with a nice birthday present! That is going way above and beyond! It was a pleasure meeting him in person! I would not hesitate to recommend this agent and his company for any travel in South America!

We were extremely happy with every aspect of our trip to Peru and the outstanding assistance and support by Stuart, Satish and others at our Peru travel agency. We flew directly to Cusco and spent two nights there seeing the various sites in and around the city with a private guide, then a private guided tour to the Sacred Valley by van spending the night in Ollantaytambo. The next morning we took the train to Machu Picchu and had a private tour of the ruins followed by a stay in the wonderful Inkaterra MP Pueblo. The following day we took the train from Aguas Caliente to Cusco - a very pleasant and comfortable way to travel. The next morning we were off to the airport traveling to Puerto Maldonado for a three night stay in the Inkaterra Amazonica Reserva. We had wonderful guides with a special hats off to Jorge in Cusco and SV. Our MP guide was also excellent. We had terrific support getting around in all the locations and would highly recommend this travel company to not only our friends but to all who consider traveling to and about Peru!

We just returned from an eight day tour of the Sacred Valley, Urubamba, Machu Picchu, and Cusco (Peru). The trip was expertly planned and executed. Leading up to the trip, my agent listened to the details and expectations of our trip and made sure they were met perfectly. The expert coordination between the travel agency and tour company made the trip transitions and experiences seamless. Every detail was considered and surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend (already have!) this travel agency and will use again for future travel!

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Peru this February. We are so thankful for our travel agent for making a perfect itinerary for our family of four. She was great to work with. Having read variety of things about Peru on the internet, we were extremely anxious especially for a February trip. We called our agent many times prior to the trip and she reassured us. She was always there to answer all of our questions. Her itinerary was perfect as we were gradually acclimatized to the high elevations of Cusco.
In Peru, we were very well taken care of, right from the moment we stepped out at Lima airport. At both Lima and Cusco airports, we were greeted by happy and welcoming people. In Lima, our guide was accommodating, friendly and funny. In Cusco, our guide and our driver made us feel very comfortable. They accommodated all of our requests. At no point of time were we rushed to do things. The Cusco guide is well informed and sincere in her tasks. She is clearly passionate about her country and its rich culture and heritage. She gave us detailed accounts of Incan history, artifacts and ruins. She got very friendly with our two kids. We had wonderful time hiking to Sungate and Inca bridge. We felt like we had travelled in the past. The ruins are spectacular and the travel team made a life time experience. The hotels chosen were excellent. Our agent also booked our lunches in wonderful restaurants with ethnic Peruvian ambiance. Our family had special time interacting with weaver family in Chincheros. Overall Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Urubamba are wonderful places to visit. It does take you to different time period. We were told by many to avoid the month of February due to rainy season but ended up having a lovely weather the entire week. The highlight of our Machu Picchu trip was seeing a rainbow over the ruins. This has been an unforgettable experience for us!

We would highly recommend this Peru travel company to help you to organize your trip. We came back from a two week-long trip to Peru a few days ago. We have been independent travelers in the past so this was our first experience in being accompanied by guides for a good part of the vacation. Paul from this agency contracted with the local tour operator to arrange transportation and guides. His dossier contained everything we needed to know, including suggestions for tipping, places to enjoy a delicious meal, and more. All of our guides were very intelligent, passionate about what they did, had a great deal of pride for their country, and highly knowledgeable about the sites, history, culture, and traditions of their country. We not only enjoyed the tours, but also learned quite a bit about the Peruvian educational and political systems through our discussions. The guides were respectful and easy to share our time with. My only complaint is that their English was so good that we were less apt to use Spanish, although that was counterbalanced by their willingness to teach us a little Quechua! Special kudos to our guide who supported us when one family member became ill enough with altitude sickness to have to stay overnight at a clinic/hospital. We traveled to Lima, Cusco, Aguas Calientes, Sacred Valley, and Puerto Maldonado. While we enjoyed some activities in Lima, we probably could have shortened our three night stay there to either venture to another location or stay longer in one of the other places. Cusco was simply lovely and we had great meals and tours there and in the Sacred Valley. We were treated to a delicious lunch at a new place right outside of Moray. We loved seeing Machu Picchu but also were glad that we stayed an extra day to climb Huayna Picchu. Our stay in Puerto Maldonado was lots of fun--our days were full with many ecoguide-led outdoor activities, including a hot trek through mud to a boat ride (fun!!), a nighttime walk, a canopy walk, and boat rides (looking for caimans at night was a highlight). Overall, we had an excellent trip which would not have been possible without Paul's help. He listened well to our wishes, made suggestions based upon what we said, and arranged for wonderful accommodations for our family. We suggest that you use this travel agency to book your next adventure. And also highly suggest that you consider Peru as a fun and varied country to visit!
