Barcelona – Arrive in Barcelona for a Fabulous Introductory Tour

Barcelona is a city of history and scenery, lively plazas and colorful markets. Trees shade the walkways of Las Ramblas as the Mediterranean Sea splashes at the golden shoreline. The architecture of Antonin Gaudi resembles the buildings of a storybook while the Gothic Quarter captivates visitors, young and old, with radiant images of history that bring the past to life. Your flight will land at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, and your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival and escort you to your luxurious hotel at the heart of the city. Your guide will meet you in your lobby, eager to lead you on an introductory tour of the city focused on the tree-lined pedestrian boulevard of Las Ramblas.

The street performers will delight your kids as they pose as life-like statues while fire-eaters puff out their cheeks and breathe out smoke. You will enter into the aisles of La Boqueria, a market first established in the 13th century and located beneath the metal rafters. Vendors will wave to your family as you pass the vibrant strawberries and oranges as cheese mongers offer free samples for the kids to taste the variety of cheeses found in Spain and popular in Catalonia. The aroma of baked goods emanates from a pastry shop inside the market that offers displays of the traditional xuixo, a deep-fried pastry coated with granulated sugar and stuffed with custard.

Spain, Portugal Luxury Travel Review: Porto, Lisbon, Algarve, Seville, Barcelona, Museums, Cathedrals, Food Tours, 2-Week Trip
We spent two weeks in Portugal and Spain visiting five areas: Porto, Lisbon, the Algarve, Seville, and Barcelona. The trip was great; well planned and with no issues. All of our tour guides were wonderful. Our tours consisted of museums, cathedrals, food tours, city tours, and wine and sherry tastings. We also received several restaurant suggestions in every area we visited and all of them were fantastic. We would highly recommend the agency we used to anyone traveling to these countries.

Portugal, Spain Trip Review: Porto, Douro Valley, Segovia, Barcelona, Madrid, Wine Tastings, 3 Weeks

The trip itinerary and guides provided in Barcelona, Porto, the Duoro Valley, and Madrid were excellent. They were very knowledgeable, professional and personable, and spoke excellent English.

Most of the drivers were very good, but we were surprised that some of them did not provide bottled water for half-day tours (we had to ask and stop to buy it). This was a minor nuisance, but given the price of tours and previous experiences, a simple expectation, as well as having the car cooled down and AC on during hot days when being picked up.

The tour manager did an outstanding job overall, but could have improved on some specific requests that seemed to be either forgotten or missed regarding an electric scooter/wheelchair we rented that caused some issues during pick-up and drop-off. Otherwise, working with her was a very good experience.

Portugal, Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Porto, Lisbon, Architecture, Culture, Museums, 13 Nights

We enjoyed the trip. The guides were good, although our guide in Lisbon provided a little bit too much history. But he was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed his tours. The communication with the Zicasso company through WhatsApp was very good and they were very accommodating to upgrading our transport vehicle because our luggage was large. The food tours were good. We enjoyed all the sites that we saw. Barcelona, especially, was great.

We stayed at four hotels. Only the hotel in Porto was a disappointment. The other hotels were good and we were very comfortable. The breakfast that was served at the various accommodations varied in quality, but the breakfast buffet in Lisbon was extremely good. The hotel in Porto was definitely not a four-star facility. The local airline definitely does not have its act together. When we left Barcelona to come home, the line for the airline was about five or six times the length of every other line. I would have definitely been willing to pay a higher amount for a business class seat in order to use the very short line in the Porto airport.

Luxury Portugal & Spain Family Trip Review: Porto, Fatima, Obidos, Lisbon, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Sintra Castle, Douro Valley
Wow, what a trip! My mother and I had been talking about seeing Portugal and Spain for many years but with Covid and children on the way, my wife and I could not commit to a good time to travel. We endeavored to travel shortly after the birth of our third child. My parents, my wife and I, and our six week old daughter travelled to Spain and Portugal with the assistance of this travel company. You would think a six week old provides some large obstacles to international travel but thanks largely due to our travel agency, we had nothing but ease and comfort throughout our journey. Our travel company anticipated all issues that we might have and was prepared to make adjustments as needed during our 11 night trip to Spain and Portugal. Everything was seamless, no waiting around or late tours. Our drivers and guides were all professionals who took extra effort to ensure we had time to change the baby or prepare her food as needed. And, if we needed to make any alterations to our plans or had questions about our tour, our travel agency provided a Whatsapp number that I simply needed texted for a quick reply.Firstly, we loved the itinerary. We saw everything that we felt we needed to see in our four cities. In each of them, we had at least one short tour to see the city itself and a longer tour where we ventured out to see a specific site outside the city proper. Each of the recommended sites were special in their own way and certainly worth the extra travel time to get to explore them, the Douro Valley north of Porto, Sintra Castle on the coast of Lisbon, Cordoba outside Seville, and Toledo to the south west of Madrid. There was a lot of moving on this trip but that is to be expected when traveling with an itinerary (a newborn to boot) and not going to a relaxing island.Besides our travel company planning the perfect trip, we had three other issues that worked out in our favor on this vacation. We were fortunate to have the world's easiest baby for one. We also chose to use the Doona stroller (a baby car seat and stroller in one) that worked perfectly for our tours and car rides as well as one way on the plane ride home!! The third was that all of our tour guides, drivers, and even the countries of Spain/Portugal were extremely helpful for those traveling with a small child. We were given extra assistance in the airports, on tours in the rain, and at all of our hotels to make traveling with a baby simple and painless.

Spain & Portugal Family Vacation Review: Tomar, Sintra, Lisbon, Porto, Seville, Cordoba, Barcelona, Douro River at Sunset
The trip was most enjoyable thanks to the services provided by our travel agent of this tour company.   Our agent was very attentive to our wishes and interests, and arranged a schedule to meet our needs.  He was very patient, and made adjustments to our schedule as required.  During the trip, he provided excellent coordination and support.  This included helping with tracking a checked bag which did not make it with us on a flight connection between Madrid and Porto.   All of the private drivers and guides was very professional, punctual and considerate of our interests, needs and comfort.   We cannot overstate how pleased we were with all of the services provided.  We feel like our amazing family trip to Spain (Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba) and Portugal (Porto, Tomar,Sintra, Lisbon) actually began when we started working with our travel agent six months prior toour departure date.  He consistently followed up with us to understand our interests, priorities, likes anddislikes, in order to create a wonderful itinerary that satisfied our entire family.  Even our last minuterequest to add a stopover in Tomar on our way from Porto to Lisbon was handled expeditiously.  Theprivate guides that took us around in all of the cities we visited were top-notch, hotels selected werecomfortable and conveniently located near the city center, drivers were on-time and friendly…  Ourtravel agent was also very responsive and helpful in giving us advice during our trip, especially when weencountered some unexpected problems such as a lost luggage during airport transfer.  Overall, the trip itself and the travel company exceeded our expectations – we were very satisfied with our trip.

Spain, Portugal Vacation Review: San Sebastian, Porto, Douro River Valley, Culture, Wine, Local Cuisine

We outlined our desires to visit the Basque region of Spain and Portugal's Douro River Valley, with an emphasis on the culture, food, and wine of the two regions. We are in our mid-70s, so we asked that activities be designed at a pace appropriate for our age.

The itinerary designed by Zicasso’s travel team met all of these requests. Our guides/drivers were superbly prepared to explain the culture and culinary milieu throughout our trip. The guides were also universally punctual, open, and affable.

We were especially pleased with the excellent locations of our hotels. In San Sebastian, we had a really excellent pintxos restaurant across the street. The owner was exceptionally helpful in choosing items from the menu, as well as local beers. And in Porto, the hotel staff recommended a small, relaxed restaurant with excellent local cuisine just half a block away.

Our walking food tours of the two cities were excellent, both in the quality of the tastings offered and the pace through the cities. And our wine tours complemented our tastes perfectly. We could not have asked for more.
