Day 1

Santa Cruz – Touching Down on the Azorean Isles

Flores is a lush island of green landscapes and endless vistas. Craggy cliffs stand above the Atlantic surf. Valleys of flowering hydrangea stretch towards lakes and lagoons. Waterfalls are hidden away, best found by using your ears. On the west of the archipelago, most of Flores is protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Even the Azoreans rave about its nature, a veritable Eden that quickly transports you into a remote island vibe. Touch down, breathe in the fresh scents, and sense the remoteness of your location. The Azores are an island escape and nowhere is better illustrated than Flores. Meet a guide at the airport, and transfer to Santa Cruz, the largest settlement on the island (population under 2,000). Walk in any direction from the hotel and you’re wrapped in nature.

Detailed Description

The highlight of every archipelago is diversity. No two islands are ever the same. That diversity is magnified in the Azores, where each volcanic island displays unique geography, culture, cuisine, and visitor highlights. Some highlights include whaling settlements that hardly seem to have changed since the 16th century; enormous lava tubes and volcanic crater lakes; searching for whales off the coast and following waves to the beach. Pico is pure volcano, Terceira is a patchwork of fields and forest, while Flores is a lush Eden of waterfalls, majestic cliffs, and hydrangea-dappled plateaus. On Sao Miguel, you taste a stew slow-cooked underground while on Corvo you meet one of Europe’s smallest ethnic communities.

This handcrafted tour explores the very best of the Azores. Stay on four different islands, Flores, Faial, Terceira, and Sao Miguel. You’ll take day trips to three other islands: Corvo, Pico, and Sao Jorge. With two weeks, you can travel at island pace, rather than having to rush around each and every day. Think laid-back days of exploring and quiet evenings watching the waves. The escapist feeling that makes the Azores so inviting. There’s something planned for each of the days but don’t expect anything too strenuous, even when hiking on a volcano. More than anything else, the Azores archipelago provides an easy getaway from your everyday world.

Start in the western cluster of islands. Flores is the lush garden island of waterfalls, lagoons, lakes, and flowers. Spend three nights here, allowing for a full day on neighboring Corvo, where 400 inhabitants keep a medieval Portuguese dialect and culture alive in the 21st century. Fly to Faial, an island best known for its whales. You’ll spot the giants in season (April to October), on a whale watching tour, and most likely on day trips to nearby Pico and Sao Jorge islands. Faial itself is all volcanic enchantment and old whaling history, with Horta as a historical base for all the exploring.

Staying in the archipelago’s heart, you spend three days on Terceira, an island of dry-stone walls, patchwork fields, tiny vineyards, and irrepressible volcanoes. UNESCO World Heritage town Angra do Heroismo transports you back to the 16th century here, as do numerous fishing villages that are hidden from the Atlantic swell. The seafood and wine are best on Terceira but the island also sees cultivated landscape give way to middle-earth-style mystery. At Sete Cidades, you discover the most famous Azores attraction. Ponta Delgada is a modern town to ease you back towards the real world. But as Sao Miguel is large, it’s easy to escape into nature as you tour waterfalls, tea plantations, nature reserves, botanical wonderlands, and smoldering fumaroles.

Portugal Family Travel Review: Lisbon, Sao Miguel, Sao Jorge, Faial, 12-Day Trip

Our travel agent made this an extraordinary, unforgettable, and wonderful trip for our family! The events and tours she arranged were exactly what we were looking for. The tour and transportation companies she contracted were on time, flexible, knowledgeable, and provided outstanding value for the cost.

Our agent provided an incredible, complete package at a cost much less than competitors. We highly recommend our agent and her team to anyone looking for a memorable trip to Lisbon and/or the Azores.

Five Stars!

Loved all the service and tour guides.

Most enjoyable was the Azores. Doing the trip again I would focus more time on the Azores. Lisbon is nice but a whole different world. Thanks for a great trip.

-Tony

5 Stars.

The guides made this trip most enjoyable. They shared their knowledge willingly and always with a smile.

The only thing I would do differently is make the trip longer.

-Mary

My star rating is 5. We had a wonderful trip without a concern over logistics thanks to this travel company. With 9 of us, it was a challenge to get the itinerary we all wanted but our agent did a great job. I was also impressed by the low cost, given all that we did, and the quality of the hotels and tours. I will absolutely recommend and in fact, plan to write a review on TripAdvisor.

The highlight was seeing my grandmother’s house in Santa Luzia on our free day in Pico. I enjoyed the Azores more than the mainland. Every one of our tour guides was excellent. I especially liked the coffee plantation in Sao Jorge, the volcano museum on Faial, and the whaling museum on Pico. Ponta Delgado was a great place to stay. I didn’t much like Madalena though with two ferry trips on the itinerary it was the best option.

What I would change, in retrospect, is less time in Lisbon, perhaps substituting a fifth island. The crowds were a problem in Lisbon and we found it a little frustrating to be pressed for time at each destination. Maybe offer Sintra or Cascais but not both, and pick two of the Batalha/Nazare/Obidos options. It’s a shame to not see it all, but also a shame to have only 45 minutes in a place like Nazare.-Susan

Travel Review: Portugal Couples Trip, Azores, Sao Miguel, Faial, Pico & Sao Jorge, Terceira, 2-Week Tour

My husband and I recently spent 2 weeks in the Azores in Portugal.  We had the pleasure of working with our travel specialist. She is in a class by herself! She is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with.  From beginning to end everything was planned perfectly.  What was especially nice is that she took the time to understand what we were looking for and then tailored a trip to our personal interests. We visited 5 islands- Sao Miguel, Faial, Pico & Sao Jorge and Terceira. Our travel specialist booked all the tours, hotels, flights and ferries between the islands. She even provided us with a mobile hotspot should we need to reach her for any reason. We truly felt that all our personal needs were attended to. For anyone thinking of doing this on their own, I would say “forget it!” Working with a travel agent within the country truly made the difference.  From beginning to end, this was a trip of a lifetime! I would highly recommend our travel specialist and would certainly call upon her for our next trip.

Luxury Portugal Trip Review: Azores Islands, Canoeing, Views, Exploration & Local Cuisine
I cannot say enough about how amazing our trip was to The Azores. The islands are magical and it feels as if we barely scratched the surface of the overall beauty of the islands, the culture and the food. It was the type of trip that leaves you craving for more and it just wraps you up. There were moments in looking at the Hydrangeas and then gazing at the ocean and the volcanoes that you completely forgot about any worries. To enhance the experience even more, we were blessed to have the guides that showed us around the three islands we toured (Pico, Faial and Sao Miguel). Each island had its own character and feel. Just thinking about the trip makes me want to go back, learn Portuguese and move our families there. Which all leads to the incredible, world class and phenomenal service that this travel company provided. From the first phone call with our travel planner, he fully understood what my wife and I would enjoy and was able to enhance what I had already thought was an exceptional trip. Our Sao Miguel guide was kind enough to give us a brief tour during a layover. We arrived in Pico and our guide was an absolute joy. She drove us to so many beautiful places and set the tone. So many wonderful little places on the newest island. Our guide in Faial was equally great as he took us to the caldera and gave us a brief glimpse of the hidden beauty in Faial. Then 4 days in Sao Miguel which honestly was not enough. Actually the 2 days in Pico and 1 day in Faial were not enough. Our guide did his best even on rainy days to make the best of the trip. We discovered so many little spots on the island that left us speechless. The canyoning, the views, the lakes, the ocean, the trees, the food, the personal service that our guide provided was above and beyond what my wife I expected.Thank you travel planner and this travel company for a trip that my wife and I truly cherish.

Portugal Trip Review: Terceira, São Miguel, Angra Do Heroísmo, Vista do Rei and Sete Cidades, Biking, Hiking, 8 Nights

We had a better trip than we could have imagined! The planning process with Zicasso's travel partner was so easy, and after just a few conversations, we had everything booked.

The hotels and activities were absolutely perfect. The app with our day-by-day itinerary and tickets made everything so easy and stress-free.

I would recommend booking with our travel agency! I really believe they connected us with local guides who were better than we would have known how to find on our own. The most kind, genuine, friendly, and knowledgeable people took us on our guided tours of Terceira and São Miguel. I can't recommend their services enough!
