Starting at the Base
When you arrive in Edinburgh the picturesque buildings of Old Town charm you immediately. Edinburgh Castle stands atop Castle Rock and has stood watch over the city for a millennium. Your private transfer meets you at the airport and takes you to a hotel at the heart of the city. After you settle in your guide will meet you at the hotel for a half-day tour of the exceptional city. The Royal Mile is a network of cobblestone streets that lead from the castle gates to Holyrood Palace. It runs a total of 321 feet through Old Town. Parliament Square houses the old Parliament building. A clock tower rises from St. Giles’ Cathedral. The West Door contains a heart-shaped pattern in the cobblestone street known as the Heart of Midlothian.
The mosaic is made of colorful granite sets and marks the position of the Old Tolbooth, a 14th century prison. When your guide passes the marker he spits. He informs you that many locals do it for good luck and to show contempt for the historic former prison. The street is wide and full of jovial locals and visitors alike. Colorful storefronts provide lightness to the stone facades. The Old City looks exactly how you imagined it, a representation of Edinburgh’s deep history and cosmopolitan present. The city continues to reveal itself to you beyond the open stretch of the Royal Mile and inside the thin meandering alleyways.

Whether by railway, walking, or driving, you will embrace the beauty of Scotland in all its forms, situated on the heels and in the heights of the Highlands.
Your Scottish adventure begins in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The energy is palpable, filled with a mixture of cosmopolitan vigor and historic importance. Edinburgh Castle stands like a beacon, recognizable from every direction. You meet your guide for a half-day tour that takes you through the castle and along the historic stones that pave the Royal Mile. Outside of the city you are taken to a collection of castles that have watched over the countryside, many of which now lay in romantic disarray. The lochs are surrounded by sensational greenery and reflect the undulating scenery.
You visit a local whisky distillery and can taste the honey-colored finished product if you feel inclined. A day trip to St. Andrews takes you to the charming university town that also claims to be as the birthplace of golf. Whether wandering around the historic cathedral, visiting the nearby fishing villages, or playing a round on the famous course, the day provides an amalgamation of wonder. Your first-class train to Inverness lets you relax in luxury en route. The countryside passes by and you have a pure view of grazing cattle, rolling hills, and the lushness Scotland is known for. The ruins of Urquhart Castle are located on the fringes of Loch Ness’s banks. After your stroll around the grounds you will depart for a cruise on the legendary waters of the lake.
The scenery around you is as magnificent, as is a possible sighting of the mystical Loch Ness monster. Eilean Donan is a breathtaking castle located against the backdrop of the sea. I worked with the travel planner on this trip. I found her to be a delightful personality who could not do enough to build our itinerary and fine tune any of the specific areas of possible problems.
We traveled to Glasgow from Philadelphia and spent our first few nights in a hotel outside of Glasgow. Accommodations at this hotel, which is noted for its spa, were excellent as were the attentions of the staff. The selection of fine whisky at the bar was superb as was the expertise of our bartender, who knew more about Scottish Malts than was safe for my son and nephew.
At the suggestion of our travel planner, after two days of golf, we toured Inverrary, a beautiful section of Scotland. Highlights included the Castle and a great meal at the hotel.
On our way to Saint Andrews for golf the following day we explored Sterling Castle and the Bannockburn battle site, which I would recommend for those with a desire to look into Scottish history. Our travel planner had already made appropriate reservations so that the visit went smoothly.
We played an excellent course at Saint Andrews the following day, The Jubilee. Again no problems with reservations. Further, our planner had arranged our stay at a hotel a short cab ride to Saint Andrews. I would recommend this hotel highly for both service and proximity.
The trip concluded with a fine day in Edinburgh where we attended a whisky tasting, again a great suggestion by our travel planner. There was an introductory session which discussed the 5 basic malt regions of Scotland, and an excellent collection of whiskies. Would recommend this as well.
Our last night was spent in Glasgow at a hotel which was well located. If location is important I would say that this hotel is ideal. Guests must understand however that it sits atop Glasgow's main train station and that windows of interior rooms look down upon the station which is quite noisy.

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.
Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles.
Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.
Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

Scotland is a gorgeous country and we saw more of it in 12 days than I thought possible! Our travel specialists took the time to listen our wishes and concerns and with those in mind, crafted an itinerary that allowed us to see Edinburgh, the lowlands, the highlands, Isle of Skye, St Andrews--a little bit of everything Scotland had to offer without us feeling rushed. Our hotel choices were spot-on. Each hotel had a unique style with lovely rooms, attentive staff and, of course, full Scottish breakfasts! We appreciated that our contact checked in via email while we were traveling, but I am happy to say that because of all her help in the planning, there was no need for her assistance during the trip.
