Cape Town – Arriving at the Cape Grace

Yachts lull in the harbor, vertical masts juxtaposed with the horizontal colored lines of sunset over the water. Table Mountain rises imperiously behind you, a tablecloth of mist floating down its face. Surrounding you is the V & A Waterfront, the upmarket destination in the city for over 100 years. A pedestrianized area filled with fine dining restaurants, boutique markets, and memoirs to history. It's all within a few steps of the Cape Grace, but when an African sunset paints the horizon, it's difficult to leave your hotel balcony.

A regular in the list of world's best hotels, the Cape Grace is an ode to decadence, blurring any distinctions between old-world and modern styles. For four nights, you're in a one bedroom suite, featuring a spacious terrace overlooking the marina and a private lounge area for breakfast and other meals from the hotel's excellent restaurant. You'll be greeted at Cape Town International and transferred to the hotel, a 30-minute journey that passes beneath Table Mountain before dropping you at the waterside. There's so much to explore in this city; but for today, there's more than enough charm to discover at the Cape Grace and the surrounding V & A Waterfront.

Detailed Description

Southern Africa's accommodations are quick to surprise and enchant visitors. Luxurious unfenced lodges are safely graced by wild white rhinos and roaming elephants. Expressive hotels stand glamorously on the edge of the land, or just upriver from the world's most powerful waterfall. Delightful enclaves offer untrammeled contemporary luxury, yet still exude a powerful immersion in the wildlife and wilderness that makes Southern Africa so special. On Travel + Leisure's 2016 list of the world's best hotels, it's South Africa that leads the way in the Africa and Middle East category. This South Africa tour celebrates only the best, an all-star 12 days offering five of the finest places to stay anywhere in the world.

There is no single blueprint for success as each hotel reflects the inspiring diversity of the country it graces. Waterfront opulence beneath Table Mountain is the appeal of the Cape Grace in Cape Town. Old-world safari exploration comes at Londolozi in the Sabi Sands, while Kruger's Singita Lebombo presents a very contemporary safari feel. The legendary Royal Livingstone Hotel is an ode to colonial grandeur while the continent's leading hotel, the Saxon, showcases how cutting-edge and African charm can seamlessly blend together.

The Cape Grace came second overall in Africa and is your base for the first four days in Cape Town, where city delights effortlessly blend with the drama of nature. Stand on the Table Mountain summit, savor exquisite fine dining restaurants, explore the Winelands, and journey down to the tip of Africa, passing penguins and springbok along the way. You'll have a private guide who will create a personalized itinerary dependent on your interests and mood.

Fly to Kruger National Park for four days of safari in one of Africa's most loved and inspiring destinations. Singita Lebombo is a newcomer, a contemporary lodge with swimming pools overlooking the elephants and private excursions into rhino-filled bush. Londolozi is all old-world charm, part of a large private reserve that excels in intimate big-game encounters. Stay for four days and the safari will be calm and relaxed, a mix of activities revealing far more than the Big Five.

You fly north to Victoria Falls, where royal colonial charms combine with the epic display of nature. For two days, you won't be able to escape the haunting and electrifying rumble of the falls; there are many options for getting the best view. Stop in Johannesburg, enjoying the Saxon and spending a morning discovering the World Heritage Cradle of Humankind site, where secrets to the history of humankind combine with the innovation of where we've reached. Throughout this 12-day South Africa, transfers and tours are private, with flights connecting destinations as you hop across the region.

South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe Vacation Review: Safari, Wildlife, Nature, 13-Day Trip

We’re still not over our trip! Everything was absolutely fantastic. Thank you for organizing such a great experience and making it so effortless for me. I already have family and friends asking who I went through, and I’m guessing some of them will be reaching out to you in the next year.

I do have one small piece of constructive feedback about our camp in the Olifants West Nature Reserve. The staff, lodge, and food were wonderful, but unfortunately, the safari guide fell short. We had just come from the camp in the Thornybush Game Reserve (where we left our hearts—the guide there was truly exceptional, with such a great personality), so the difference stood out even more. At the Olifants West Nature Reserve camp, we saw very few animals and the guide didn’t engage much—he barely spoke, and when he did, it wasn’t very professional or kind, especially toward my son. My son even said the trip might have worked better in reverse, since after Botswana it was hard to adjust to seeing only a few animals a day.

That said, I’m so grateful for how smoothly you planned everything, especially on such short notice. It really was a trip of a lifetime for us.

Thank you again!
