Gates of the North
The Basque country is remarkably different than the rest of Spain. The locals hold onto their heritage, from language to cuisine, proudly. Bilbao is a modern face on the traditional region yet holds tightly to its historic streets as well. You and your private transfer join up at the airport as your romantic getaway to Spain begins, and you quickly settle into the city surrounded by green hills. The city hums with activity but maintains a relaxed pace that allows locals and visitors to enjoy. The Nervión River runs through the city. The calm current ripples against the risen banks. The mixed aroma of pintxos, smaller plates similar to tapas drifts through the brimming restaurants.
Casco Viejo is the old quarter, filled with atmosphere and boisterous cafes. Independent shops sell quirky and unusual items unique to the city. The heart of the city maintains the seven original streets that Bilbao was founded on dating back to the 15th century. The Gothic Catedral de Santiago was constructed in the 14th century and combines a gothic cloister with stone carvings along the buttresses. The beauty of the cathedral is soft spoken against the backdrop of the historic center. Visit the Guggenheim Museum and find a remarkable structure that breathed life into the once industrial city.
The angled metal façade and elegant windows capture the sun, which allows more natural light to enter the galleries. The museum was constructed in 1997 and does not just display artwork, but is known as a piece of artwork in and of itself. The interior provides a gallery of open space where you can view Jeff Koons’ almost 40-foot tall Highland terrier constructed with thousands of begonias. In the evening, you can find a table waiting for you at Zortziko, a Basque favorite that has more than earned its Michelin Star. The chef is known to bring delicate, modern touches to familiar local dishes. The menu continually changes, which means that your experience will be unique to your visit.

We outlined our desires to visit the Basque region of Spain and Portugal's Douro River Valley, with an emphasis on the culture, food, and wine of the two regions. We are in our mid-70s, so we asked that activities be designed at a pace appropriate for our age.
The itinerary designed by Zicasso’s travel team met all of these requests. Our guides/drivers were superbly prepared to explain the culture and culinary milieu throughout our trip. The guides were also universally punctual, open, and affable.
We were especially pleased with the excellent locations of our hotels. In San Sebastian, we had a really excellent pintxos restaurant across the street. The owner was exceptionally helpful in choosing items from the menu, as well as local beers. And in Porto, the hotel staff recommended a small, relaxed restaurant with excellent local cuisine just half a block away.
Our walking food tours of the two cities were excellent, both in the quality of the tastings offered and the pace through the cities. And our wine tours complemented our tastes perfectly. We could not have asked for more.

We came across Zicasso and this Spain travel company quite by accident, but certainly glad we did. Our agent and her staff assited us in planning a rather ambitious "Spain Sampler" taking us from Barcelona to Mallorca to San Sebastian, Madrid and eventually down South to Andalusia and specifically Cordoba, Sevilla and Grenada, all over a span of 3 weeks.
The range of this trip required many connections and arrangements, and they were coordinated flawlessly by our agent and her staff. Every private transfer by car went off without a hitch, flights and high speed train travel worked out perfectly-
Our trip also included many private guides and tours. These enanced our trip immensely and are highly recommended. Especially memorable were our tours to the Somontano Wine Region outside Barcelona and a small family owned winery and a tour of the Basque Coast that included a personal tour and tasting at a Txacoli Winery (yes, we love Spanish Wines!) We also had an extremely informative tour of the Madrid City Center and the Thyssen Museum. We were fortunate to see a special Edward Munch Exhibit.
Our group tour of the Alhambra in Granada was sensational. This place is truly one of the wonders of the world!
While is San Sebastian, our agent got us a reservation at the renowned Arzak Restaurant, and amazing and creative culinary adventure.
At each stop on our trip, our agent and her staff put us in 4-Star Hotels. These were generally centrally located and enabled us to effortlessly walk to important sites and restaurants. Hotels varied somewhat in terms of quality. We found that "Boutique Hotels" sometimes sacrificed comfort and basic amenities for trendiness, but overall location trumped whatever reservations we had about accommodations.
We should also mention that our agent and her staff provided excellent support on the run. In the course of 3 weeks, several concerns or questions came up. Our agent was responsive and addressed these concerns immediately, with the aim of making things as easy as poosible for us.
All in all, our trip was planned and executed with consummate professionalism and expertise. Every attempt was made to individualize and tailor the trip to our interests and preferences. It was a smashing success and we would not hesitate to avail ourselves of the services offered by Zicasso and this travel company again, with great enthusiasm.

Zicasso.com connected us with this agent and her company and from the start things could not have gone better. After submitting an itinerary, our agent called me and discussed the proposed trip to Spain for 6 people. She helped me narrow down the cities to visit to something manageable and relaxing rather than something hurried and rushed. We decided on Madrid (4 nights), Barcelona (5 nights) and Donostia-San Sebastian (3 nights). We stayed in large, modern, well-appointed apartments in very central areas of each city each time. Our agent also arranged tours for us to various places, including the Prado museum (saw Velazquez' 1656 Las Meninas considered by many to be the best example of composition in painting ever), the Royal Palace and a side trip to Segovia. Our tour guide was great, with degrees in art history and over 30 years experience, she educated us beyond our expectations. We went to the Reina Sofia (saw Picasso's Guernica) and the Thyssen (private collection spanning many decades) museums on our own. Our tour guide in Barcelona also was great, showing us and educating us about La Rambla, the Picasso museum (where we saw paintings from his blue period, cubism and 57 sketches of Las Meninas which he studied meticulously), the Gothic quarter and Gaudi's masterpieces including La Sagrada Familia (which is still not finished, but is supposed to be in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death). Lastly Donostia-San Sebastian was a beautiful town, sandwiched between La Concha beach and the mountains. We hiked Monte Urgull and saw the Sacre Couer and ate pinxtos at the best places, introduced to us by our lovely guide. A side trip to the Guggenheim in Bilbao was probably not worth an entire day of leaving town for, however.

This was the trip of a lifetime!! Our Zicasso tour operator was incredible from start to finish!!
I traveled to Barcelona to see my son who was studying there. From there, my travel agent helped me plan a trip up the northern coast of Spain that included San Sebastián, Biarritz, Santander, Oviedo, and Santiago de Compostela.
My agent didn’t miss a thing. From top hotels to the best rooms at each hotel, incredible tour guides, and wonderful restaurant recommendations, everything he suggested was a win for us. He was even able to accommodate a last-minute request for a tour at one of our stops.
In addition to all this, he was attentive, checking in during our trip to ensure we were having fun and didn’t need anything. All this, combined with his attentive response to questions and a very user-friendly travel app, made the trip very easy! I highly recommend him and would definitely use his company again to book my next trip.

Our travel representative was great. Weprocrastinated in planning our trip, which put our representative in a time crunch, but heput together an amazing vacation in northern Spain. The hotels he selected wereall great, located in the most convenient places. The view from our room inLeon was of the cathedral and an ancient Roman wall. The suite in Getariawas right on the water. Our hotel in Haro was built as a convent in 1373. Ourhotel in Madrid was right in the heart of the city, just a few blocks from thePlaza Mayor. And in San Sebastian we could, and did, walk to the beach.
Our representative met us in Leon and droveus to the car rental agency, saving us taxi fare. He led us back to the hoteland ensured we were safely parked for the night. Then he walked through townwith us and pointed out some of the highlights. We had encountered sometechnical difficulties getting Euros, but he escorted us to his bank whereour debit card finally worked. We had not expected such a personal touch.
Our representative made sure we had his cellphone number and encouraged us to call if there were any problems. There wereno problems. Every part of the trip went according to his plan. All of hisarrangements were carried out flawlessly. There was even a small gift waitingfor us at our final stop. I'm not bashful about posting negative comments online, but there was absolutely nothing negative to report. If I could givethis company more than five stars, I would.
