Rioja – Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

The tour begins with your arrival in Bilbao, where you will collect your rental car to begin your exciting journey. The drive is approximately one hour to your destination of Santo Domingo de la Calzada in La Rioja. When you arrive, settle into your accommodations at the Parador of Santo Domingo. A beautifully restored building, this elegant hotel occupies a former pilgrims’ inn that dates back to the 12th century. The medieval inn offered shelter to pilgrims taking the “The Way of Saint James” route to Santiago de Compostela.

Today, this luxurious hotel reflects the regal character of the past in its beautifully decorated rooms. All rooms have traditional decorations and some have four-poster beds. Amenities include telephone, television and minibar. The building has magnificent lounges and the original Gothic archways lend an atmospheric quality. The property also has a cozy bar for gathering with friends and family as well as a gourmet restaurant, allowing you to enjoy an excellent meal without leaving the hotel. This restaurant’s cuisine features delicious dishes made with Piquillo peppers, such as Menestra de Verduras (hearty stew of vegetables). The restaurant also offers a wonderful selection of the local Rioja wines.

There is an interesting story associated with this historic inn. According to legend, centuries ago, the innkeeper’s daughter was in romantic pursuit of one of the pilgrims staying at the inn, but unfortunately the young man was not interested in her. To retaliate, she placed another guest’s possessions in his room, then claimed he committed the theft. In those days, he would have been punished with death. The story was told to the son's parents that Saint Dominic would protect their son. When a magistrate heard the tale, he disagreed and announced that the boy would be dead—just like the roast chicken on his table! At that moment, the chicken flew right off the table! Ever since, this tale has been commemorated by a cock displayed in the Cathedral Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

Spend some time today discovering the ancient city of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the most important stops along the pilgrims’ “Route to Santiago.” The city was founded in the 11th century by a religious man devoted to helping pilgrims make their way along the Way of Saint James. Being extremely devout himself, Domingo made the pilgrimage his life’s work; he helped to build a cathedral and hospital. Tied to its history as part of the Pilgrims’ Route, the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada was declared a National Historic Interest Site.

As you stroll through the medieval cobblestone streets and admire its impressive cathedral, soak up the ambience of this old city. Your hotel is just next to the cathedral that dates back to the 12th century, with interesting later modifications. Admire the unique blend of architectural styles: Romanesque, Baroque and Plateresque (Spanish “silversmith” style). The cathedral’s sacristy also holds precious works of art. Adding to the Old World charm of the city, the cathedral’s clock strikes religiously on the hour every day.

Luxury France & Spain Travel Review: Bilbao, Rioja, Basque Country, Madrid, Toledo, Axarquia, Flamenco, El Cielo, Wine Country
When our son traveled to Bilbao, Spain to study abroad for a semester ( Jan. 2013 ), my husband and I decided we would plan a trip to Spain to visit him. We knew we wanted to see Bilbao, but we also wanted to see some of the other highlights of Spain, so we contacted Zicasso to help with an itinerary. We received emails from two separate travel companies, but in the end decided on these Spain travel specialists out of Madrid. Samuel, the owner of this Spain travel company was our point of contact throughout the process. Samuel was professional, trustworthy and extremely thorough with every detail of our trip. We emailed constantly before, during and after our trip which we completed in May. We had a "wish list" of things to do and he met and surpassed all of our expectations. We spent 12 days in Spain, four days each in various places. The first four days were spent in the beautiful city of Bilbao visiting our son and his host family. We explored the northern countryside of Spain; the Rioja wine region as well as a day in southern France. We then took a train to the exciting city of Madrid, taking in the history and culture of that area. Finally, after a second train ride, we arrived on the southern coast and the Mediterranean in Andalusia. All three regions were very different and gave us a wonderful sampling of the country of Spain. By using Zicasso, and then ultimately connecting with this Spain travel company, our trip was a huge success. These Spain travel specialists took all of the guess work out of planning. They made all of the arrangements, made wonderful suggestions, made sure we were always taken care of and made it to all or our destinations. We had some guided tours and then there were days when we were on our own. The guides were all professional, fun and full of information about their country. We loved our trip and will be talking about it for years to come.

Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia, Basque Country, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Museum, Sagrada Familia, 2-Week Trip
We just returned from a wonderful 2-week trip to Spain with emphasis on Barcelona, Basque Country and Madrid. The travel agent, Rosa, was an absolute gem during the planning stage, and provided thoughtful guidance and immediate responses to any questions regarding our ambitious itinerary.  Accommodations in Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao and Madrid were top-notch, in addition to being fun and unique. All included sumptuous breakfasts, and were centrally-located to attractions, dining and activities - we walked everywhere! Transportation between cities (car and train) was comfortable and efficient. Our trip was highlighted by our visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao - we cannot recommend it enough. Sightseeing tours in all locations were detailed and informative, and featured pleasant and knowledgeable local guides for our 1/2-day and full-day trips. We highly recommend this travel company for any Spain-bound travelers!

Spain Review, Basque Country Drive, Bilbao, Alhambra, Cathedrals, Juderia in Cordoba, Seville
Excellent service providing customized trip to Basque region, Bilbao, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville.  Included guides, drivers, hotels, and internal flight.   We are independent travelers in our mid-70’s but knew we needed advice and assistance in maximizing our week in Spain.  We had free time as well in each city.  This travel team proposed an itinerary but was amenable to our suggested tweaks and budget constraints.  Guides were personable and knowledgeable with good English. Trip went off without a hitch.  We had a wonderful experience.

Travel Review: Luxury Tour of Spain, San Sebastian, Alquezar, Salardu, Bilbao, Guernica, Food, Wine, Culture, Art

We had one of the best holidays in our lives, with the most excellent itinerary planned by this agency. We had a self-drive tour and had no problem touring from one place to another thanks to their detailed description provided to us in advance. We visited the medieval town of Alquezar, staying at a beautiful casa hotel with a magnificent view of the town from the terrace, with a tasteful decor and great hospitality, subsequently traveling to Salardu, a famous ski resort in the Pyrenees. We then drove a long distance to San Sebastian where we stayed for four nights, from where we visited Rioja wineries, Bilbao and Guernica, the heart of the Basque country. Throughout our journey we were guided by really kind, friendly and knowledgeable local guides which made the holiday truly an insightful experience. A perfect experience we would like to relive. It was also very nice of our travel agent to come and visit us in person and have coffee with us. We could not possibly have planned such a wonderful holiday by ourselves so all our thanks go to this company. We would definitely travel with them again.

Spain Trip Review: Barcelona, Bilbao, Rioja, San Sebastián, Madrid, Toledo, Sitges, Montserrat, Private Tours
My overall comments on the trip are fantastic. My wife and I spent nine days in Spain: three in Barcelona, two in Bilbao and Rioja, two in San Sebastián, and two in Madrid, with a day trip to Toledo. We were in Spain from April 19 to 28. I believe we were there before the height of the tourist season, so I feel it may have been less crowded, which was great for us. It was a great vacation!
