Santiago de Compostela - Exploring Galician Territory and the Mecca of Spain

Your flight will arrive at Santiago de Compostela Airport, where your private transfer will greet you at customs.

At Santiago de Compostela, hundreds of pilgrims will also be accompanying your arrival from their hike through Northern Spain. These backpackers have just walked through the Camino de Santiago, which is a route that was first trekked by pilgrims during the middle ages to pay homage to St. James, who was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Visitors from all over Europe continue to walk this path for spiritual growth. You can gaze at the faces of the newly arrived as they will have a look of contentment and awe after finally reaching their destination. You will now be able to see the gorgeous landscapes and areas from where they just ventured. After settling into your accommodation, you will enjoy the Galician greenery around the town and see modern art at the Galicia Contemporary Art Center.

The Galician region has a deep history with strong connections to Celtic roots that you may see in the decorations of businesses and hear the Gaita, which is the Galician bagpipe that is played on the streets. The region here also has its own language, Gallego, that is somewhat similar to Spanish and Portuguese.

Northern Spain Review: San Sebastian, Santander, Oviedo, Prehistoric Caves & Paintings, Birding, Pintxos Tour & Cooking Lesson
The trip to northern Spain was excellent. Every one of the planned excursions/events worked out well, the guides and drivers were very good, and the itinerary was thoughtful and fun. We stayed in 3 cities during our trip: San Sebastian, Santander, and Oviedo. We loved San Sebastian-- lovely city, fun pintxos tour, good cooking lesson and market visit with 2 very enjoyable cooks/guides, nice beach time. From Santander, we visited 3 prehistoric cave sites to look at cave paintings and learn about early human settlements, and spent a morning visiting a medieval town nearby. In Oviedo, we visited sites in the lovely city and spent a day with a hiking/birding guide in the Picos de Europa national park. We also stopped in Bilbao to see the Guggenheim Museum. There was enough free time for the 3 of us, along with several planned activities that were all fun. We also had time to visit various museums, churches and cathedrals, an aquarium, and local parks and beaches on our own. This travel company did a good job of helping us plan an itinerary, then made all the necessary arrangements at each place. There were no glitches in the arrangements: every guide showed up on time, every visit lived up to its description. Accommodations were good (especially in Oviedo - we loved the hotel).

Travel Review: Luxury Family Tour of Spain, Barcelona, Madrid, Santiago, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Guggenheim, Reina Sofia, Hiking

Our family of four (with boys ages 16 and 13) felt extremely satisfied with our two-week adventure through Northern Spain (Santiago de Compostela/Galicia, Oviedo, San Sebastian/Bilbao), Barcelona, and a slice of Madrid.  We cannot rave enough about the travel agency we worked with for planning this trip.  From the very start, they were very open to crafting an experience tailored to our interests and needs.  Initially we spoke by phone and then continued the planning through email exchanges until a finalized itinerary was agreed upon. Once in Spain, the agency continued to be in touch with us to confirm details such as driver information and make sure things were going well.  They planned seamless transitions between cities/regions, whether by plane, train or car.  Very professional drivers collected us from and took us to airports--some of them were quite entertaining and sources of great travel advice.  We were also quite happy with all the hotels our agency booked for us with respect to comfort and desired amenities.  Finally, the private guides our agency arranged for us were FANTASTIC---they were very expert, friendly and professional. They each taught us so much about their city's/region's history and gave great tips for navigating the area on our own. Through these guides, we were provided a unique lens into the culture of the region we were exploring.

Travel Review: Luxury Vacation to Spain and Portugal, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Lugo, Bilbao, Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra
Overall, we were very pleased with the service provided by our Spain and Portugal travel agent Senora Redondo. After outlining our preferences, she put together a very comprehensive and detailed itinerary and made all of the arrangements involved down to the last detail. The hotels were generally conveniently located and all were clean and provided efficient and attentive service. The Astoria in San Sebastian and the paradors in De Fuente de and Ribadeo were our favorites. In Santillana del Mar we would have chosen the parador outside the restoration since we prefer visiting real places not overrun by tourists. The other hotels were good overall, but we had great difficulty finding them. Directions from primary roads with good maps or a GPS in English would have been much appreciated. In both Lisbon and in Santiago del Compostella, our rooms were below street level, noisy and lacking privacy unless windows remained closed with curtains drawn. We found the room in the Hotel Inspira Marta cold and austere, like a gray and white concrete prison cell. In addition, the electronics were so complicated that we needed lessons to operate the lights. Senora Redondo arranged for three city tours. Our half-day city tour in Barcelona was disappointing and quite inefficient. The tour started late and our guide was equally disorganized. His explanation of the sites was cursory at best, and he spoke English rapidly and with a thick accent, which made him difficult to understand. Again we wasted hours visiting a restoration instead of authentic sites. We would have preferred an on/off city tour. On the following day we traveled with another company to Gerona and Figueres, which was far better, much more professional. Our guide was efficient, knowledgeable and well spoken. We had a similar positive experience on our Madrid city tour. Our favorite stops were Barcelona, Gerona, Figueras, San Sebastian, Debu, Bilbao, Comillas, Cudillero, Fuente de in Picos de Europa, Rebadeo, Lugo, Porto, Coimbre, Lisbon and Madrid. We visited other towns and cities, but ended up eliminating several of the suggested stops listed on our itinerary as the trip became too hectic partly because we spent so much time finding our way without good directions. Overall, we would give this Spain and Portugal travel agency and especially Senora Redondo a brava for a job well done and would recommend them to friends interested in traveling to Spain and Portugal. We loved our trip. We hope our comments will be helpful.

Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia, Basque Country, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Museum, Sagrada Familia, 2-Week Trip
We just returned from a wonderful 2-week trip to Spain with emphasis on Barcelona, Basque Country and Madrid. The travel agent, Rosa, was an absolute gem during the planning stage, and provided thoughtful guidance and immediate responses to any questions regarding our ambitious itinerary.  Accommodations in Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao and Madrid were top-notch, in addition to being fun and unique. All included sumptuous breakfasts, and were centrally-located to attractions, dining and activities - we walked everywhere! Transportation between cities (car and train) was comfortable and efficient. Our trip was highlighted by our visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao - we cannot recommend it enough. Sightseeing tours in all locations were detailed and informative, and featured pleasant and knowledgeable local guides for our 1/2-day and full-day trips. We highly recommend this travel company for any Spain-bound travelers!

Luxury Spain Vacation Review: San Sebastian, Madrid, Rioja, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, Guggenheim, Ancestral Tour

First, the service provided by this Spain travel company and in particular, our agent was absolutely the best! Our agent planned our itinerary, and coordinated the hotels, drivers, flight, train, and any excursions we wanted. This was our dream trip to Northern Spain and our agent handled all of the details with perfection! We could not have planned this ourselves.  Every single part of our vacation was professional and perfect.  In the future, whenever I travel to Spain, I am immediately contacting this company and this agent to take care of everything from start to finish.   Do not hesitate to use this company. I found them through Zicasso and in the future I will also use Zicasso for travel outside the USA.

Secondly, our trip...We wanted to visit Northern Spain to see the areas where my great great grandparents and ancestors lived.  We flew to Madrid, then took a train to Rioja and stayed in Elciego during the wine grape harvest and crushing of the grapes. We then had a private driver take us to San Sebastian, where we stayed on the beach for two days and enjoyed the Bay of Biscay and delicious sea food. We then had a private driver take us to Santander, then to Oviedo and then to Santiago de Compostela. Each of these cities and the areas along the Northern Coast of Spain are incredible and unique. We flew back to Madrid from Santiago. I can highly recommend this itinerary for anyone traveling to Northern Spain! It was so filled and packed with history, food, wine, and scenery that we are still absorbing and processing it even after we returned home. Every detail was carefully planned by this company and our agent! Muchas gracias for a fabulous fabulous vacation and for fulfilling our dream of travel in Northern Spain!!!

Luxury Spain Tour Review: Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Toledo, Art History, Food & Wine, Football

I cannot say enough fabulous things about the luxury tour company. It exceeded every expectation my husband and I had for customer service, care, attention to detail and planning our 12-day tour through Spain in mid-January.

We are seasoned world travelers and have been on many amazing and wonderful adventures. We've had great experiences with many tour companies, but none compare to the level of expertise and excellence of this tour company.

We simply told our trip planners that we wanted to go to Spain, and didn't know exactly where or what to do or see. They took it from there -- all by email, though they certainly were available any time by phone had we wanted to talk. We prefer email. They asked about our interests, what level of accommodations we wanted, how physically active we wanted a tour to be. They then emailed a sample itinerary. We tweeked it some. And voila. They planned a trip for us that was magical and memorable on all levels.

We were greeted at every stop by a driver and taken wherever our schedule directed. All of our plane and train travel in Spain was arranged. All we needed to do was show up. When we arrived in Barcelona, as well as Madrid a week later, there was a taxi strike. We worried how we would get to a soccer (football) match in Barcelona. Our young woman guide for two days simply said, "Don't worry about it. I am your eyes and ears, and I will take care of it." And she did. A driver picked us up, delivered us to the stadium, and waited for us at a nearby location until after the match, when he ferried us back to our hotel.

On our day in Barcelona that was planned for all things Gaudi, it was raining quite hard. Our guide that day did some quick thinking and as I told him, took lemons and made lemonade. He and our driver took us to a small company town outside of Barcelona that Gaudi had designed. In fact, the small church there that he designed served as a first impression of his large cathedral in Barcelona. Then our guide took to a former hospital that exhibited fascinating architecture and history. By the time we finished touring it, and following a delightful lunch, the rain had let up enough for us to visit more Gaudi designs.

Our guides arranged for us to visit a private Gastronomic Society in San Sebastian, which was so much fun, and our lunch was outstanding. They also got us into the private home/office/studio of two art restorers in Sevilla. After the duo showed us the type of art (old paintings and statuary) they restored, and how they did it in their studio, they invited us to their personal upstairs apartment for some refreshments and lively conversation about Spain, Sevilla, politics and food. So delightful and interesting.

Our entire trip was like this. Each and every guide at every stop was bright, knowledgeable and personable. Our trip planners laid pearls here and there along the way -- small delights and pleasures -- that surprised us and kept us totally engaged in the history, culture, food, wine, art and joy of Spain.

This tour company is 100% responsible for making our trip the amazing adventure it was. We look forward to returning next year. This tour company will plan our trip through Northwestern and Southern Spain and then to Portugal.

If you're interested in traveling anywhere in Spain or Portugal, and you want luxury and the trip of a lifetime to deposit into your memory bank to warm you when you're too old to walk the cobblestones, call or email this tour company immediately. Or email me. I'm very happy to share more details of our heavenly trip.

P.S. Our 12-day holiday covered: Barcelona; San Sebastian; Bilbao; Sevilla; Cordoba; Madrid; Toledo. We took two flights and one high-speed train during that time.
