Madrid – Easing Into the Spanish Experience
Madrid does not feel like a typical European capital city as it does not have the chaotic bustle of London or the endless attraction queues of Paris. This is an isolated city, where the atmosphere is true to the origins of early Spain. Families go about their evening walks to meet on the plazas where the children can run around as adults have a drink. Madrid is a very green city with a variety of inner-city parks along with a lovely stretch along the river with fountains, and small pools are perfect for kids cooling off.
Land in Madrid and you will be met at the arrivals hall. It is a 30-minute transfer into the city and to your hotel that is between El Retiro Park and the old city center. A 10-minute walk in one direction brings you to royal gardens, where you can boat across lakes and walk down statue-lined lanes. Walk the other way to a maze of 16th- and 17th-century streets, most of them pedestrianized and leading to the Plaza Mayor, the main square. Your guide will provide a map and some recommendations restaurants, and you will be spoiled for choice in this part of Madrid with cafes and restaurants abounding.

Detailed Description
Spanish families have good ideas as on most evenings they go for a paseo, a walk around pedestrianized streets and parks, stopping on the cobbled terraces for a drink or some food. They sidestep most places that bustle with tourists and stick to places that they have been visiting for generations, and where the allure of old Spain still rings proud and true. This family tour will follow the ways of the Spanish family and is handcrafted around Spanish tastes, focusing on destinations that excite both parents and children and where you will have the time and space to relax as a family. You will then find yourselves in Valencia rather than Barcelona, and the small Catalan resort of Llafranc rather than the Costa del Sol, and be amazed to find plenty of iconic Spanish scenes.
One of Spain’s great highlights is how local the country feels. Other than a handful of over-popular destinations and attractions, Spain has retained its authenticity. Toledo and Girona are memoirs to a medieval time, and seemingly unchanged over the ages. In Valencia and Madrid, you are continually with the locals to explore the places they like to hang out. The evening paseo is integral to local culture, as is a quiet mid-afternoon that gives you some time to rest after lunch while avoiding the heat. Some places are just too crowded and full of hassle for families, Barcelona’s La Ramblas one example, but the Spanish do not need to visit them when every city is studded with hidden gems.
This relaxed four-destination tour allows you to take it slow while discovering the beauty and authenticity of Spain. Spend four nights in Madrid, and then three each in Valencia, Llafranc, and Granada. Local guides lead the way in each of the cities, designing a route that focuses on family-friendly sights. Think chocolate and churros and an Egyptian temple in Madrid, cycling through the gardens of Valencia, or an old train station that has been converted into an interactive train museum. Of course, you will get to see some famous Spanish sights as well, such as Granada’s Alhambra and the cathedral in Toledo.
Land in Madrid and ease into the experience. Filling the first few days are parks and palaces, plazas and playgrounds. Perhaps you will also get to one of the art museums as well, but even without, just walking through central Madrid gives a wonderful impression of how Spain can be. Take a day trip to Toledo on day four, a medieval city of Roman roots where you will probably need to take a stroller as it is a near complete city behind old walls. Valencia is the best city in Spain for families. It’s relaxed and green, dominated by quiet pedestrian streets and a long golden beach. Plus there is a park that runs through the whole city, so you do not need to be on busy roads. You are immersed in local culture wherever you are here, with the mix of old and new exciting for all ages.
Take the train north, through Barcelona to Girona, the second Catalan city. Llafranc is a short transfer from here, a quiet beach town that is completely different to elsewhere on the Costa Brava. The waters are warm and shallow, without any current. While the beach is not empty, you do not get the crowds of nearby resorts, and the town is all charm. It has stayed traditionally Spanish as nearby resorts have suffered from mass tourism and major development. On day 11, you can stop for half a day in Barcelona before your flight to Granada for enough time enough to see the Nou Camp or Park Guell. Then bask in Moorish beauty for the final three nights. Granada is slow and elegant, full of authentic local pleasures, and so easy on the eye. Interested in learning more by seeing some of our travelers’ Spain vacation tour reviews? Click here for more.

We visited Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Sevilla, Granada and Toledo.
Our travel agency took care of making hotel reservations and providing us with guides for our tour.
All hotel reservations were fine, good, clean hotels great breakfast included.
Our guides were experts, very knowledgeable, nice and polite.
Our travel agency got us tickets for a soccer game in Barcelona and a bullfight in Madrid, good accommodations.
Only in one occasion, in Sevilla, we could not meet with our guide and had to go by our selves.
When visiting the Alhambra, in Granada, at the end of the visit we couldn't find where our bus was and had to take a taxi. The guide did not return with us.
In general, our travel agency's services were very good, they made our visit very enjoyable and would recommend them to any body willing to visit Spain.

Our Spain travel agency arranged a wonderful two week trip for us. We visited Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Ronda, Granada, and Cordoba. We loved all the tours and activities planned and the tour guides in each city was very knowledgable and spoke great English. Everything went smoothly with train rides and transfers. We also rented a car and drove in the white hilly towns in Andalucia and was given a wireless wifi router for using google maps on our phones. From the start our agent listened to what we wanted and also made great suggestions. We had a phone conversation and he was very flexible and accommodating. We also wanted to see Barca play and there was a game when we were there and he got us excellent seats to the game. There was an issue with our Barcelona hotel with them doing renovations on our floor and I mentioned it to him and he fixed the issue right away and upgraded our hotel room in Granada to apologize for it which was very nice of him. We also met him in Madrid for a drink.

The trip was 5 star in every way. All of the drivers were on time at the airports, train stations and hotels. The accommodations were all wonderful and centrally located. The tour guides in every city were superb. The itinerary was 2 days in Barcelona where we enjoyed a tour of the city by bicycle and a wonderful tapas class, a high speed train to Sevilla where we stayed for 2 days and picked up a car. We drove all through Andalucia visiting Ronda, Granada(Alhambra) and the beach town of Nerja. We dropped the car off in Malaga and took the train back to Madrid where we spent a day in Toledo and closed with dinner and the finest Flamenco show in all of Spain. Our travel representative prepared a wonderful journey for my wife and me. I would recommend this travel agency with a grade of A+............Harold S

I cannot say enough fabulous things about the luxury tour company. It exceeded every expectation my husband and I had for customer service, care, attention to detail and planning our 12-day tour through Spain in mid-January.
We are seasoned world travelers and have been on many amazing and wonderful adventures. We've had great experiences with many tour companies, but none compare to the level of expertise and excellence of this tour company.
We simply told our trip planners that we wanted to go to Spain, and didn't know exactly where or what to do or see. They took it from there -- all by email, though they certainly were available any time by phone had we wanted to talk. We prefer email. They asked about our interests, what level of accommodations we wanted, how physically active we wanted a tour to be. They then emailed a sample itinerary. We tweeked it some. And voila. They planned a trip for us that was magical and memorable on all levels.
We were greeted at every stop by a driver and taken wherever our schedule directed. All of our plane and train travel in Spain was arranged. All we needed to do was show up. When we arrived in Barcelona, as well as Madrid a week later, there was a taxi strike. We worried how we would get to a soccer (football) match in Barcelona. Our young woman guide for two days simply said, "Don't worry about it. I am your eyes and ears, and I will take care of it." And she did. A driver picked us up, delivered us to the stadium, and waited for us at a nearby location until after the match, when he ferried us back to our hotel.
On our day in Barcelona that was planned for all things Gaudi, it was raining quite hard. Our guide that day did some quick thinking and as I told him, took lemons and made lemonade. He and our driver took us to a small company town outside of Barcelona that Gaudi had designed. In fact, the small church there that he designed served as a first impression of his large cathedral in Barcelona. Then our guide took to a former hospital that exhibited fascinating architecture and history. By the time we finished touring it, and following a delightful lunch, the rain had let up enough for us to visit more Gaudi designs.
Our guides arranged for us to visit a private Gastronomic Society in San Sebastian, which was so much fun, and our lunch was outstanding. They also got us into the private home/office/studio of two art restorers in Sevilla. After the duo showed us the type of art (old paintings and statuary) they restored, and how they did it in their studio, they invited us to their personal upstairs apartment for some refreshments and lively conversation about Spain, Sevilla, politics and food. So delightful and interesting.
Our entire trip was like this. Each and every guide at every stop was bright, knowledgeable and personable. Our trip planners laid pearls here and there along the way -- small delights and pleasures -- that surprised us and kept us totally engaged in the history, culture, food, wine, art and joy of Spain.
This tour company is 100% responsible for making our trip the amazing adventure it was. We look forward to returning next year. This tour company will plan our trip through Northwestern and Southern Spain and then to Portugal.
If you're interested in traveling anywhere in Spain or Portugal, and you want luxury and the trip of a lifetime to deposit into your memory bank to warm you when you're too old to walk the cobblestones, call or email this tour company immediately. Or email me. I'm very happy to share more details of our heavenly trip.
P.S. Our 12-day holiday covered: Barcelona; San Sebastian; Bilbao; Sevilla; Cordoba; Madrid; Toledo. We took two flights and one high-speed train during that time.
