Madrid – Superlative Art and Local Spanish Experiences

Madrid always proves to be a romantic place to land as elegant tree-lined boulevards mark your way from the airport to the city center, the odd statue sneaking its way above the branches. Closing in on the heart of the city, the roads become narrow, most of them made from cobbles. Your hotel is within this old area, barely a five-minute walk to the Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s grand 17th-century centerpiece. Check-in, freshen up and then grab a coffee with your guide on a cafe terrace. Ease your way into Spain and gain some historical perspective from the guide, before heading out into the city’s famed art scene.

The Prado is world-famous, a museum of classical art that covers the very best of Spanish painters up until the 20th century along with the world’s finest collection of Flemish art. Explore the galleries and the masterpieces following the chronological artistic timeline. You could spend a full day here, but two hours is usually enough to get a feel for who is who and why such painting are so revered. You will likely be a little weary after your flight, so most of the afternoon is left free, although the private Thyssen-Bornemisza collection is a great complement to the Prado.

This evening you can head to the Plaza Mayor and stroll without a plan. Cafes and restaurants line this central square, their terraces emanating chatter and enthusiasm. Narrow pedestrianized roads jut out between the terraces, leading you towards the smell of coffee, chocolate, and tapas. One way to soak up the Spanish atmosphere is to hop between the tapas bars. Another is to dine at one of the small restaurants in the area, before returning to the Plaza Mayor for a glass of wine or short coffee later in the evening, when there’s a real hum to the atmosphere.

Detailed Description

Spain is always authentic, and this handcrafted tour puts you in the heart of the local experience. Think tapas hopping through Seville’s cobbled lanes, and then wandering through a part-monastery part-palace that evokes Spain’s coming to global power. There will be an evening of flamenco, not a tourist show but a performance in the place where flamenco began. You can delve into the art world, not merely in museums and galleries, but also in small churches where dazzling works hide. With just seven days you are never going to see all of Spain, as that is not possible even with seven months. But transport connections are reliable, and this route will take you around the diversity of highlights with four very distinct overnight destinations.

Handcrafted to maximize experiences and minimize wasted time, this is an action-packed itinerary yet one that can still be truthful to Spain’s laid-back style. They do not like to rush things here, and you will be able to take it slow, especially during the evenings. Relaxing on a cafe terrace or dining al fresco is part of local culture, and your hotels have been handpicked for their location as much as anything, ensuring that you are close to everything after dark. Mostly, you will travel on first-class high-speed first-class rail, the quickest way to go from city center to city center, although there is a flight from Seville to Barcelona.

Fly into Madrid and the first day is all about superb art and Spanish experiences found in the Prado, and then around the Plaza Mayor. After sleeping in the next morning, you can take a day trip to Toledo, a medieval city of harmonious religion and famous El Greco artwork. Sink all of your senses into the history and stay until dusk, when Toledo exquisitely changes color. The next you will visit El Escorial, the most dramatic of all the Golden Age architecture, part monastic retreat, and part flamboyant palace. That afternoon you’re on the train to Cordoba, an old Moorish city with a lively local atmosphere and a great sense of Andalusian change.

It’s the Mezquita that Cordoba is famous for, and you will need the whole morning of the next day to appreciate why. It will then be a short hop to Seville for an evening of flamenco, Triana the district where it all evolved, a couple of centuries ago. The next day is dedicated to the best of Seville, from its architectural highlights and treasures to local tapas bars that each have their own specialty. Fly to Barcelona the following day, and you will find Catalan culture, and some hours to spend on the beach. The flamboyant Modernist architecture is saved for your last day, Gaudi and Montaner providing fitting final memories before you fly out late in the evening. Consider reading some of our travelers’ Spain tour reviews for more ideas to perfect your dream vacation.

Our travel agency planned a two week, multi-city trip for us, covering Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Granada, Seville, the White Villages and Barcelona.  They arranged in-country hotels, transportation, drivers, guides, restaurant reservations and tours.  They did an excellent job on all fronts:  Professional, friendly, thoughtful and thorough.  Highly recommended.

Luxury Spain Tour Review: Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Toledo, Art History, Food & Wine, Football

I cannot say enough fabulous things about the luxury tour company. It exceeded every expectation my husband and I had for customer service, care, attention to detail and planning our 12-day tour through Spain in mid-January.

We are seasoned world travelers and have been on many amazing and wonderful adventures. We've had great experiences with many tour companies, but none compare to the level of expertise and excellence of this tour company.

We simply told our trip planners that we wanted to go to Spain, and didn't know exactly where or what to do or see. They took it from there -- all by email, though they certainly were available any time by phone had we wanted to talk. We prefer email. They asked about our interests, what level of accommodations we wanted, how physically active we wanted a tour to be. They then emailed a sample itinerary. We tweeked it some. And voila. They planned a trip for us that was magical and memorable on all levels.

We were greeted at every stop by a driver and taken wherever our schedule directed. All of our plane and train travel in Spain was arranged. All we needed to do was show up. When we arrived in Barcelona, as well as Madrid a week later, there was a taxi strike. We worried how we would get to a soccer (football) match in Barcelona. Our young woman guide for two days simply said, "Don't worry about it. I am your eyes and ears, and I will take care of it." And she did. A driver picked us up, delivered us to the stadium, and waited for us at a nearby location until after the match, when he ferried us back to our hotel.

On our day in Barcelona that was planned for all things Gaudi, it was raining quite hard. Our guide that day did some quick thinking and as I told him, took lemons and made lemonade. He and our driver took us to a small company town outside of Barcelona that Gaudi had designed. In fact, the small church there that he designed served as a first impression of his large cathedral in Barcelona. Then our guide took to a former hospital that exhibited fascinating architecture and history. By the time we finished touring it, and following a delightful lunch, the rain had let up enough for us to visit more Gaudi designs.

Our guides arranged for us to visit a private Gastronomic Society in San Sebastian, which was so much fun, and our lunch was outstanding. They also got us into the private home/office/studio of two art restorers in Sevilla. After the duo showed us the type of art (old paintings and statuary) they restored, and how they did it in their studio, they invited us to their personal upstairs apartment for some refreshments and lively conversation about Spain, Sevilla, politics and food. So delightful and interesting.

Our entire trip was like this. Each and every guide at every stop was bright, knowledgeable and personable. Our trip planners laid pearls here and there along the way -- small delights and pleasures -- that surprised us and kept us totally engaged in the history, culture, food, wine, art and joy of Spain.

This tour company is 100% responsible for making our trip the amazing adventure it was. We look forward to returning next year. This tour company will plan our trip through Northwestern and Southern Spain and then to Portugal.

If you're interested in traveling anywhere in Spain or Portugal, and you want luxury and the trip of a lifetime to deposit into your memory bank to warm you when you're too old to walk the cobblestones, call or email this tour company immediately. Or email me. I'm very happy to share more details of our heavenly trip.

P.S. Our 12-day holiday covered: Barcelona; San Sebastian; Bilbao; Sevilla; Cordoba; Madrid; Toledo. We took two flights and one high-speed train during that time.

Travel Review: Spain Vacation, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Granada, Toledo, Cordoba, Mosque of Cordoba, Alhambra, 13-Day Trip
The travel company set up a perfectly planned itinerary for our trip to Spain. My travel specialist & I spoke on the phone before the planning & he listened to where I wanted to go & what I wanted to see. I probably would not have included Toledo or Cordoba but so glad both of these cities were included as day trips as each one had amazing architecture and history. Our guide in Cordoba was a walking, talking encyclopedia. Our visit with him to Mezquita de Cordoba was so impressive and his extensive knowledge of the history of this famous Mosque-Cathedral kept us tuned in. He commented that travelers who were not using guides did not know what they were missing. I agree 100%. Just a little bit about the private transportation, guides & rail arrangements. Wherever we were to meet a driver they were always there before we arrived. Professional, cordial & English speaking, each one a pleasure to meet. Our guides were all so knowledgeable and made note of things we would have missed without them. Our other guide took us through Toledo & Madrid when she pointed out the Cardinals hats hanging above the tombs in the Toledo Cathedral I was amazed, that was a first for me & probably would have missed it. Seville was a lovely city, easy to get lost all thewinding remote streets. I would advise to stay central or in the Triana district. Granada! I'm under your spell.....My granddaughter, age 26 & I fell in love with Granada. Warm ,friendly, Alhambra, Sierra Nevada mountains & the Albaicin district a truly beautiful city. We wish we were there longer and would love to go back. Our final stop was Barcelona and it did not disappoint. Our Hotel was the perfect location and we felt safe when on our own. We were within a block of Passeig de Gracia the famous high end shopping district. We had four full days and did see everything we planned to see, Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Gaudi's Casa Batillo, Picasso Museum, Magic Fountain & more. The food and hospitality was excellent in each city. Spain is not lacking for restaurants. Our two week trip was well planned and yet relaxing.I want to personally thank our travel specialist from the travel company for checking in each day asking if everything was ok and providing the names and numbers of the drivers & guides. Did this trip meet our expectations? For Sure.

Luxury Portugal & Spain Family Trip Review: Porto, Fatima, Obidos, Lisbon, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Sintra Castle, Douro Valley
Wow, what a trip! My mother and I had been talking about seeing Portugal and Spain for many years but with Covid and children on the way, my wife and I could not commit to a good time to travel. We endeavored to travel shortly after the birth of our third child. My parents, my wife and I, and our six week old daughter travelled to Spain and Portugal with the assistance of this travel company. You would think a six week old provides some large obstacles to international travel but thanks largely due to our travel agency, we had nothing but ease and comfort throughout our journey. Our travel company anticipated all issues that we might have and was prepared to make adjustments as needed during our 11 night trip to Spain and Portugal. Everything was seamless, no waiting around or late tours. Our drivers and guides were all professionals who took extra effort to ensure we had time to change the baby or prepare her food as needed. And, if we needed to make any alterations to our plans or had questions about our tour, our travel agency provided a Whatsapp number that I simply needed texted for a quick reply.Firstly, we loved the itinerary. We saw everything that we felt we needed to see in our four cities. In each of them, we had at least one short tour to see the city itself and a longer tour where we ventured out to see a specific site outside the city proper. Each of the recommended sites were special in their own way and certainly worth the extra travel time to get to explore them, the Douro Valley north of Porto, Sintra Castle on the coast of Lisbon, Cordoba outside Seville, and Toledo to the south west of Madrid. There was a lot of moving on this trip but that is to be expected when traveling with an itinerary (a newborn to boot) and not going to a relaxing island.Besides our travel company planning the perfect trip, we had three other issues that worked out in our favor on this vacation. We were fortunate to have the world's easiest baby for one. We also chose to use the Doona stroller (a baby car seat and stroller in one) that worked perfectly for our tours and car rides as well as one way on the plane ride home!! The third was that all of our tour guides, drivers, and even the countries of Spain/Portugal were extremely helpful for those traveling with a small child. We were given extra assistance in the airports, on tours in the rain, and at all of our hotels to make traveling with a baby simple and painless.

Spain Travel Review: Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Gaudi Architecture, Local Cuisine & Culture, History
This travel team provided excellent service for our one-week trip in mainland Spain, visiting Barcelona and Madrid, with a day trip to Toledo. We worked with our agent to develop an itinerary that provided us with a good overview of these three cities during our short timeframe. They arranged our hotels, transfers, train transportation, guided tours, and tickets to several museums/sights we toured on our own. Because of the team’s extensive plan, we were able to visit museums, cathedrals, and other sights without waiting in lines and on days when these venues were open. The travel team also arranged personal guides to take us through busier, harder to navigate sights, such as The Prado Museum, La Sagrada Familia, and Toledo. The guides were excellent communicators, providing entertaining and informative talks on history and culture. We initially thought about planning this week ourselves but were overwhelmed by the many choices and logistics of selecting hotels and deciding what to do when. This self-guided, customized itinerary allowed us to maximize our time while touring the highlights for each location. We also had “peace of mind” knowing that we had experts to consult if problems arose. For instance, the Barcelona demonstrations were active during our visit; this travel team kept us informed and were ready to offer alternatives if necessary. Luckily, none were needed. We would definitely use this travel team on future trips to Spain, and Zicasso to help plan self-guided tours to other places around the world.
