Zurich – Arrive in Switzerland’s Largest City for an Introductory Tour
Zurich is a work of art in and of itself, able to balance its historical district with the more contemporary neighborhoods while preserving its heritage in the fast-paced, globalized world. The streets sing with a fine mixture of musical notes that emanate from the movement of its occupants and the hum of the electric trams that move up and down the streets. The famous Bahnhofstrasse stretches from the train station to the edges of Lake Zurich, spanning nearly 4,000 feet. Fountains trickle with graceful water as trees shade the walkway while distinguished buildings add an artistic allure to the view.
Boutique shops boast creative displays in the windows to use their space along the pedestrianized street to showcase new designs and glistening jewelry. Before your tour begins, your private transfer will meet you at the Zurich airport and escort you into the heart of the city for an introductory tour. Explore the beauty of the Bahnhofstrasse and then venture into the underground display of watches and clocks in the basement of Bahnhofstrasse 31, known as the Uhrenmuseum Beyer Zurich. The exhibit showcases the artistry of clocks and watches throughout time, including a selection of wooden wheels, Nuremberg pendulums, and water clocks. It is the perfect introduction to an art form that has been mastered by the Swiss as the clocks all begin to chime as the day goes by.

Our travel company did a great job designing our trip and keeping in touch. Our agent obtained wonderful seats for us at the Lucerne Music Festival and arranged for a private tour of the KKL which was memorable. He also arranged a great trip for us on a lunch boat.
Our agent originally booked us at the one hotel in Lucerne but decided that another was a better, more charming option. While it was, indeed, charming, had a great staff, and outstanding food, it lacked air conditioning. As a result we had difficulty sleeping well despite the two fans which we used constantly. When I consulted TripAdvisor and discovered there was no AC it was too late to change hotels.
Our guide in Luzern, Basel, and Zurich, while rather young, had an excellent knowledge of these cities as well as Swiss history, culture, and politics. However, she was unaware that we couldn't reach the Rutli Meadow by car and wasted more than an hour trying to find it during a day trip around Lake Luzern thereby forcing us to eliminate part of the day's itinerary.
Our drivers left much to be desired. When we arrived at the Zurich airport, we couldn't find our driver. After inquiring at the information desk he appeared carrying a very small sign with our names. When we reached Luzern he got lost and spent about 30 minutes trying to find our hotel. We had another driver take us to Zurich for a day trip, and he, too, got lost and drove around the area of the Bahnhof for about half an hour before he finally found our guide who was waiting for us in front of the Schweitzerhof.
Knowing that we are vegetarians, our agent reserved a table for us at Hiltl, the finest vegetarian restaurant in Europe, and it was spectacularly good.
We wish we could give this trip 5 stars, but the hotel and the drivers reduce it to 4 and a half.

Our travel planner did a fine job of identifying places to stay and explore in Switzerland. She also arranged for premium Swiss rail passes which were very beneficial for train travel but also beneficial for entering museums, riding ferries, and taking buses. She also introduced us to AXUS, an app that held our itinerary, rail pass, hotel information, schedules, and much more. In addition, all the drivers drove clean comfortable vehicles and were exceptionally courteous, and friendly.
Our first stay was in the small town of Thun which we got to by private, prearranged car. We stayed in a castle on a hill. There was a nice gift of local artisan chocolates waiting for us. Devaki arranged a dinner for our first night which was good but the main course, meat, was stringy and not very tasty which made it a less than enjoyable meal. We felt bad that we spoke no German, as the waitstaff spoke no English. I wouldn't stay there again. The castle is good to visit but the rooms, which are hyper-modern, lacked the expected charm and ambiance. The other big drawback to the hotel was the lack of decent wi-fi and as a result, we couldn't access any of the AXUS information.
Actually, we had counted on referring to the Lonely Planet Tour Guide book included in AXUS throughout the trip, but without portable wifi access such as that which was provided with the tour of Portugal you arranged for us in 2018, the online book was useless as we attempted to locate and learn about various sites. We didn't print the material she recommended so couldn't read that either. Next time, we'll either get portable wifi included somehow or just buy a book!
While in Thun we visited Lauterbrunnen and Bern. Both were outstanding. We wondered why we didn't stay in large, fascinating Bern instead of Thun, reversing the day trip itinerary. In Lauterbrunnen, which would have been easily accessed by Bern, Devaki told us to see the waterfall in the center of town. But we discovered the Trummelbach Falls and the funicular & train to the Eiger Hotel and the highest spot (James Bond & Eiger Sanction) in Switzerland on our own. They were probably in the book we couldn't access. Back in Thun, we had a tour guide the next day, Corrine, whom we liked very much, and she did a wonderful job of showing us historic Thun and making such and dinner reservations.
From Thun, we took the train to Lucerne where we stayed at a fine hotel with a view of the lake. We had a guide, Luis, who was scheduled for a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour. He walked us uphill to the historic wall of Lucerne, through some odd places to a hotel at the top of a hill. The tour did not cover the center of Lucerne or the historic bridges. We were very disappointed and he cut it short by almost thirty minutes. It was a very strange tour and I wouldn't recommend that guide to anyone. We wonder if he's licensed since we saw so many professional tour guides taking people to the Medieval places we had to see on our own after the exhausting hike to a hotel from the 1800s. All very strange. From what we discovered on our own, we loved Lucerne. Thanks to Devaki's arrangements, we worked with the hotel to make an appointment for a COVID test for our travel back to the U.S.
From Lucerne, we took the train to Geneva where we were met by a driver to take us to our elegant hotel, which we loved, for our last night in Switzerland. We had tea around 4:30 which was really, really good. After tea, we walked along the lake. The next morning we were met by an arranged driver who took us to the airport. He actually went the extra mile and took our bags to the check-in desk for KLM.
Overall we had a great Switzerland experience and Devaki made some fine arrangements that made our travels easy.

Our trip was truly a trip of a lifetime. We absolutely loved our time in each location.
Paris: We adored our guide and were slightly sad when we didn't get to see her one day. Our guide on Notre Dame was wonderful but for our group may have been a little too in depth. She likely would appeal best to people who loves architecture and older couples. The history of couture was so much more than that. The shop our guide took us to was a craftman or creators dream. My dad and husband couldn't get enough of the shop and the things they showed us. This was everyone's FAVORITE thing we did all trip.
Switzerland: Lucerne was just amazing and actually everyone's favorite location. Our guide to was GREAT. Pilatus was amazing, the cog train was so interesting! Overall we loved seeing Grindewald, but were underwhelmed with their activities on the mountain. We ended up forgoing the long waits at the activities and just eating lunch at the top and looking at the views. Our trip to Berne and guide were great, it was a quick overview of the city which was great after our morning trip. After our amazing time in Lucerne we were underwhelmed with Lusanne. Everything was great there, but overall Lucerne was just better to us. The wine tasting was super fun for everyone!
Monte Carlo: Overall Monte Carlo was our least "liked" location. The hotel was a great hotel, but after staying at these amazing boutique hotels all week we missed the boutique feeling. Our guide that took us to explore the area was really incredible. We went to a perfume factory and WOW was it cool!
