Chiang Mai – An Indulgent Spa and a Charming City of Old Laneways

Take a window seat as you fly into Chiang Mai. Jungles cascade across rolling hills and the odd granite peaks tower above fields of green. Rice paddies line low-lying slopes, which are ferociously green for eight months of the year. If you land in Bangkok, it is hard to see much of the smog. Chiang Mai is cut adrift from the bustling city life; it was cut off from the rest of Siam until the 1920s, which means its culture has survived invasions from the Burmese, among others. When you touch down it will seem like you are in a small town, as you will experience a handful of quiet streets nestled beside a shady canopy of trees. Chiang Mai is much larger than it initially seems, however, you will probably only see the interesting old neighborhoods and a tranquil areas along the river.

After a long flight, this is an ideal place to land. You will be greeted at the airport and then transferred to a hotel on the riverbank, which is a five-star retreat that is hidden away from the rest of the population. Check in to the suite and relax. You may also wander to the on-site spa and settle into a one-hour couple’s treatment, which has an array of packages to choose from. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s spa hub, and there is a variety of traditional and contemporary treatments, as well as Thai fusion options. You will continue to relax around the pool and in the suite, perhaps just laying back on the balcony as the river curves before your eyes.

Chiang Mai is considered Thailand’s cultural hub as well. In reality, Bangkok has just as much to see, but other destinations must contest the claim. The attraction in Chiang Mai is how easy it is to experience this culture. It is an old walled city with pedestrianized streets that lead to night markets and ruined temples. This is a city where you will walk through the culture rather than drive to isolated attractions. Such a way of exploration will really help you feel immersed in the Thai culture, from a spiritual history to an enthusiastic way of life that continues to be based on traditions. You will find old Chiang Mai is a beautiful place to get lost while walking hand in hand.

Detailed Description

Thailand has always had a double appeal for couples. The beaches and islands are famous here, and the sheer abundance helps to ensure there is always a quiet space away from crowds. An intimate and authentic culture will provide new experiences, which will create private moments for the two of you in an incense-wrapped monastery or an elephant-studded jungle. It is more than possible to experience both of these sides of Thailand in just seven days. That is what this handcrafted tour is all about: an inspirational connection with culture followed by two islands and more beaches than you can keep track of.

The choice of hotel makes all the difference, and this tour has handpicked the best small boutique properties. These are exclusive places to stay, which will keep you away from crowds while ensuring a romantic atmosphere at all times. For example, there are plenty of places to stay around Railay Beach. Your small resort is deliberately inaccessible and perched on the cliffs with steps going down to the beach. This spot becomes a sightseeing paradise during low tide. In addition to the private beaches, you may attend a spa retreat along a river, where you will feel your energy return after the flight as you enjoy the tranquillity away from all of the city noise.

Seven days is not that much time, yet you can comfortably include four different destinations, especially as you bypass Bangkok. Chiang Mai provides two days of cultural experiences, as well as elephants and monkeys. Railay is a beach from a dream. Draped along the Andaman Sea, Koh Lanta is an island offering both culture and white sand that is ideal for 24 hours of something different. Then, you will fly to the Gulf of Thailand for a different style of beach retreat. On most days there are no planned activities, just efficient transport and a premier place to stay. Local tours can be organized on the ground, and there are many self-guided activities as well, such as walking to a Koh Samui temple or just exploring as you see fit.

Flying into Chiang Mai, you head straight to the spa hotel, which is a couple’s treatment included in the tour. Here, you will relax in the old city on your first evening, getting lost in the laneways and following monks around small temples. You may also spend day two on a private elephant experience, walking with them through the jungle as well as helping them bathe in the river. At sunset, you will be with a monk who will give you a blessing in a small incense-filled room. Across Chiang Mai, you will find excellent fine dining restaurants, as well as an atmospheric night market for more informal evenings.

Next, you will fly to Krabi and hit the beaches. Resorts stretch out along Railway Beach, and yours is hidden from the rest. This is a private beach and quiet place for you to gaze upon the Andaman. If you’re feeling active, then you can hike up to a nearby viewpoint and wander to a turquoise lagoon. It is more likely that you will spend a full day at the resort indulging in the privacy. It is only one hour by speedboat to Koh Lanta, where Lanta Old Town provides a lovely place to stroll and grab a seafood lunch. This is an island of numerous postcard-perfect beaches, and once you are tucked away, romance is found everywhere beneath the shadows of the palm trees.

A new flight route has connected Thailand’s two bodies of water. You will end in the Gulf of Thailand, where you may observe the sea’s subtle color changes. You will have no need for shoes over the final two days as you will settle into a boutique resort that is perfectly perched on the sand. Here on Koh Samui, there is space to walk hand in hand across deserted beaches, snorkel into dazzling marine worlds, and find solitude on coastal jungle cliffs. This is the classic Thai destination for couples, and just like in Railay and Koh Lanta, you can drift through sunny days on a vacation that offers all the freedom you need alongside experiences that are known to spur romance. Don’t take just our word for it - consider reading some of our travelers’ reviews of Thailand, and see how you can customize your own dream vacation.

Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam Vacation Review: Elephant Sanctuary, Private Tours, Local Culture, Cuisine, Angkor Wat, Cu Chi Tunnels, Trekking, Biking, Boating, 10-Night Trip

Our Zicasso travel agent did a wonderful job taking our requests and styling a complex, detailed itinerary. Everything worked perfectly. The guides all communicated with each other and the drivers were always at the expected locations. All accommodations were awesome and well-located.

Beginning in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we visited Doi Inthanon National Park, the Doi Suthep mountain temple, and had an absolutely awesome time visiting with elephants at the elephant sanctuary, among other things. We even got to play with a two-week-old elephant. All our dining recommendations were awesome and we particularly enjoyed our time with the guides.

Next, we flew to Krabi for unforgettable views and relaxing beach time. Again, the resort was awesome. We even went mountain climbing on Railay Beach. My son got engaged at the New Year's gala at our hotel, which was spectacular; an unbelievable stay. We particularly enjoyed our time with the guide!

Next, we finished in Bangkok, where the highlight was riding in the tuk-tuks and doing a city food tour. Our guide was so awesome and knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, eight of the 10 of us then flew home, while my wife and I continued to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Our guide was such a good travel companion and we left Cambodia with a true knowledge of Cambodian life/history/temples. He was very forthcoming about his life growing up under the Khmer Rouge. Although a long day, the temple tour was unbelievable, culminating in Angkor Wat. Our hotel was awesome and blocks from the nightlife on Pub Street. It was such a great stay.

Next, we flew to Saigon. We were met by our guide, who noticed we were hungry and immediately stopped at a local street food vendor for our first foray into bun bo. It was so good. The mix of history, countryside visits, and city tours with our guide was awesome and she even left us with a customized pictorial of our visit. The other excursion that needs mention is the Vespa city and food tour. Our main guide was delightful, giving us a true taste of Saigon culture and food. The drivers were so great.  This tour finished with a surprise visit to a local bar/club, where we had front-row seats to an awesome Latin band for a nightcap. It was truly unforgettable. Also, we cannot forget our visit to the Cu Chi tunnels, where our guide did a great job educating and touring us through this unbelievable history.

Then, we flew to Hanoi to another awesome location. Highlights in Hanoi would be visiting the Hoa Lo prison, having dinner in a local family's home, and especially the Minsk backstreet tour. Our tour drivers were so awesome. This excursion really gave us a feel for the city/backstreets, as well as an idea of the frightening life of riding a motorbike through the city and back alleys of Hanoi. It was truly unforgettable. This tour finished with my knees about a foot away from the speeding train at Hanoi train station, another can't-miss site!

Next, we visited Ninh Binh for trekking, biking, and bamboo boating. The scenery was awesome and it was definitely a nice break from the busy city.

The trip finished with a two-night, three-day cruise on Hạ Long Bay. The scenery was unbelievable and the staff were excellent; so attentive and informative.

This trip truly was spectacular and we are so happy that Zicasso connected us with our agent to make all of this happen. We couldn't be happier with the entire trip!

Singapore, Thailand Luxury Tour Review: 20-Day Trip

Singapore and Thailand Adventure 19 February 2024

Dates: January 24th, 2024 through February 14th, 2024

In short, we were happy with the itinerary and enjoyed each location on our trip.

The execution of our travel plan and support we received from the Zicasso travel agency left much to be desired.

Highlights:

The hotels booked were excellent with highest marks for the hotel in Bangkok and the one in Krabi, which was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. Locations and amenities of all the hotels were beyond reproach.

The Elephant Sanctuary was fun and everything we hoped it would be.

The night market in Chiang Mai was a highlight. Our host in Chiang Mai was the best, and super helpful.

The airport transfers and check-ins all went according to plan and were all on time with no glitches.

The lunches/restaurants on both the Krabi and Koh Samui speedboat excursions were really good and had delicious food.

Lowlights:

When we checked into our first hotel (in Singapore) early the morning of January 26th after our 17-hour flight from San Francisco, we were happy knowing that we would be getting an early check-in. However, we were surprised to learn that we were actually paying for the night of January 25th, which was not indicated in our itinerary. In fact, the itinerary stated 3 nights in Singapore, January 26th – 28th. We were not pleased with the deception and would like to be reimbursed for the additional night’s lodging.

Our biggest issue, throughout the trip came with baggage allowances and weight for all of our intra-Thailand flights. We had a total of 5 flights booked by the travel company, in addition to the SFO – SIN round trip which we booked ourselves. The problem was that all 5 flights were booked on the cheapest economy fare with minimal baggage allowances. I think it’s fair to say that when you’re taking a high-end “luxury” vacation, you don’t expect to be limited to a single 20 piece of luggage, which was what we had on our AirAsia and Bangkok Air flights. We upgraded some of the flights ourselves for additional weight and AirAsia’s “Red Carpet” Service (both at additional cost) but were unable to make some of the upgrades since the travel company used their own contact information (instead of ours) to book the flights. When we tried to make changes ourselves, the contact information didn’t match, and we couldn’t make the desired changes. We then asked to upgrade all of our remaining flights but had problems at every step.

We notified the company of Adriana’s requirements for gluten-free meals in advance of the trip. The hosts or the hotels we stayed at were rarely aware of this requirement which became a constant source of frustration.

We took a city tour in Singapore which included dinner… the Chinese restaurant was TERRIBLE and there was barely anything (gluten-free) that Adriana could eat.

We had no “host” in either Krabi or Koh Samui, but were only given a phone number to call with questions, etc. We never met anyone at either location.

We had several instances where our excursion guide didn’t know what our itinerary included. As an example, In Koh Samui, our guide and speedboat captain didn’t know that we were supposed to have a “5 Island Tour” which would include the best snorkeling spots available. It wasn’t until more than halfway through our 6-hour excursion that we showed them our itinerary to confirm. They then did a high-speed pass by 3 of the islands and the snorkeling location we stopped at was a complete waste of time. Had we known better, we would have been taken to Koh Tao, which is supposed to be one of the best snorkeling sites in the world.

Luxury Thailand Travel Review:Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Angthong National Park, Elephants, Kayaking, Cooking Class
Our family of four traveled to Thailand in June 2013. This Thailand travel company handled all arrangements including itinerary, hotels, airlines, ground transportation, tours and activities. We were thrilled with the trip and give these Thailand travel specialists our highest recommendation. We had a great time on the trip. All of the arrangements, tours, guides, and hotels were terrific. The following are a few thoughts: In Bangkok we stayed at the Chatrium. Overall, we were satisfied with this hotel. The public areas of the hotel, the general location, the service and the breakfast buffet were terrific. Having said that, we were not as thrilled with our individual rooms (we had two). The rooms and bathrooms were a little tired. We had talked about upgrading the hotel to the Four Seasons or the Mandarin Oriental but we decided to save the money and use it to upgrade our hotel in Koh Samui. I think that was probably the right decision. Our tour guide in Bangkok, Pom, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, prompt, helpful and kind. We could not have asked for a better tour guide. He picked us up from the airport and took us to our hotel. On the ride to the hotel, he gave us a wonderful introduction to Thailand and explained about the language and culture. Because this was our first visit to Thailand, this was very helpful. On our second day, Pom picked us up and took us to see all of the major sights in Bangkok including the Golden Buddha, the Reclining Buddha and the Grand Palace and grounds. In between, we took a boat ride through the canals of Bangkok and we shared lunch together. Moreover, when we expressed interest in flowers, he took us to the flower and spice markets, which was beautiful and interesting. On the third day, we were on our own to explore (and shop). This was a good break for us and my kids especially liked the opportunity to explore on our own. On the last day in Bangkok, Pom took us to the floating market before heading to the airport. Pom presented my youngest daughter (who had recently graduated from High School) with a huge teddy bear. We were all very touched. In Chiang Mai, we were again met by a very friendly guide. Although we did not spend much time with her, she was very nice and helpful. In Chiang Mai we stayed at UChiangMai Hotel. This small boutique hotel was lovely. It is within the walled city and was perfectly located to explore the city. The hotel was really intimate and wonderful. The staff of the hotel was particularly helpful and the buffet breakfast was excellent. The highlight of the trip was probably our day at the Patara Elephant camp. You can read all about Patara on other sites but it is a fantastic program and we all really enjoyed the experience and had a wonderful time. The following day we went to the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School. Our instructor was excellent and we really enjoyed the program start to finish. There was only one other person at the school that day, so it felt like a private cooking class. Next, we flew to Koh Samui. We stayed at the SALA Samui Resort. We absolutely loved this hotel. It was picture perfect. What a great location, facilities, service and food. At check in we were presented with cold towels and drinks and introduced to the Hotel Manager (Dick). Our rooms were beautiful and luxurious. The amenities were first class. The breakfast buffet was fantastic. I think this was the perfect hotel for us.

Review: Luxury Trip to Thailand, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Krabi, Elephant Experience, Cooking Class

This travel agency really impressed us! From meeting us at the airport once we arrived in Thailand to providing tours to us throughout the entire country, our travel agency provided top notch customer service the entire way through. The booking experience was productive and smooth, all of the logistics were a breeze (shuttle pickup to and from airports, private van rides to and from hotel to our daily destinations - with ice cold refreshments), and the local flavor was refreshing (all of the tour guides were local in each city we stopped in with many years of experience). We enjoyed all 3 of our tour guides in each city - Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. They were very knowledgable and the specific activities that were booked through Trails of Indochina were exactly what we were looking for:

Temple tours, river tour through the city (Bangkok)Temple tours, rickshaw ride through the city (Chiang Mai)Elephant Day (Chiang Mai)Cooking Class Day (Chiang Mai)Boat day to Ko Phi Phi (Krabi)

The guides had everything we needed (waters, snacks, offering to take photos the whole time, etc.)

We would highly recommend this company.

Review: Thailand Tour, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Koh Lanta, Scuba Diving, Elephant Experience, Cooking Class

This is a long overdue review. We traveled to different areas of Thailand for 2 weeks at the end of January and beginning of February 2018. After being matched with this travel company, our agent made the process of planning this vacation very simple. He responded quickly to questions, was available through text, email, and phone, and put together a wonderful itinerary for us. We visited Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, and Koh Lanta, which were all unique and amazing in their own respects. What we were really impressed with is that our agent and his team made sure that someone was always waiting for us at our next stop, whether it was someone to pick us up at the airport or a tour guide waiting for us at our hotel. Unfortunately, there was one issue with our airplane tickets being accidentally booked incorrectly, but after getting on the phone with our agent, we were able to resolve it quickly and were able to continue on to Krabi as planned. I must say my fiancé and I were really impressed with the quality of the tours that were arranged for us by this travel agent. I cannot say enough about how much I absolutely adored our tour guide in Bangkok. Kanchanaburi was beautiful and my most favorite part was waking up to the sound of the flowing river on our jungle raft in the morning. We also loved the cooking class with a local Lanna family and visiting the Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai and the Scuba Dive in Koh Lanta. The hotel was a spectacular treat in Koh Lanta. Our agent booked us a beachfront suite that was literally steps from the hotel's private beach front, and the perfect place to get engaged in Thailand.  This was an amazing unforgettable trip for the both of us and we cannot thank this travel company enough. Our travel agent and his team made this trip stress-free and wonderful. I would use his company again in a heartbeat and encourage anyone who is planning a trip to Thailand to utilize them as well. I promise you will not be disappointed! Thank you so much to our agent and the travel company's team.

Thailand 2nd Honeymoon Review: River Kwai Kayaking, Hiking & Biking, Doi Inthanon National Park, Koh Lanta, History & Culture
FLAWLESS!My husband and I decided to have a second honeymoon after we sent our kids to college! We wanted to do our own thing and not be part of a group. Going to Thailand for two weeks and making all the arrangements seemed a little overwhelming since we wanted to explore different parts of the country. This is where our travel planner from the tour company came into the picture. After emailing us countless times and spending time on the phone trying to understand exactly how we wanted to travel, he put together a wonderful itinerary. Everything was taken care of: the logistics of domestic flights, pick ups and drop offs, guided tours, tickets to a boxing match, hotels, etc. Once we arrived in Thailand, we felt like " precious cargo" that was being handled with utmost care and concern. Everything ran so smoothly, that all we had to do was relax and enjoy our trip! Every guide showed up, every driver delivered, every hotel exceeded our expectations. The travel planner and his team were in constant contact and responded to us immediately. They went above and beyond what was required - since we traveled when Coronavirus was wreaking havoc on flights, they made sure that we were going to get home safely by calling airlines and emailing updates. We loved our trip and all the guided that we spent time with. We can't say enough about our guide who took us biking, hiking and kayaking on the River Kwai and prepared a delicious home-made lunches. Same goes to our other guide who showed us Chiang Mai and the Ithanon national park. Our trip to see elephants at a park in Chiang Mai with him was the highlight of our trip! In Bangkok, our guide showed us how to take every mode of transportation like the locals do while telling us about the history and culture of Thailand. Our last couple of days were spent on the island of Koh Lanta. It's truly a paradise! Our resort was built into the cliffs on the Andaman Sea and the beauty of the place and the friendliness of the staff made the end of our trip very special. Thanks for our planner, we spent two amazing weeks in the land of smiles and can't wait to come back!
