Istanbul – City Walking Tour and Bosphorus Cruise

Welcome to Istanbul. Welcome to a city that straddles two continents and excels in blending the best of both. Your guide and driver is waiting at the airport, and after a chance to freshen up at the hotel, a walking tour begins to unveil the eclectic influences that mark the city. Start at the Hagia Sophia, a 6th-century church that became a 15th-century mosque and now stands as an exemplifier of Turkey's secularization. Christian wall frescos and Islamic interiors mix together and the building's size is remarkable even today. For many centuries, it was among the largest five buildings on the planet.

As the sun begins to cast gentle tones across Istanbul you embark on a scenic cruise along the Bosphorus. Linking the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea, this narrow strait divides Europe and Asia. Admire the architecture that stands proud on both continents and wait for the sun to set and the lights to cast reflections onto the continental divide. The boat docks beside a quaint waterfront restaurant for a welcome dinner of seafood and traditional specialties.

Detailed Description

Turkey's land is one of historical narratives and unadulterated charm: Roman ruins, Greek relics, Ionian temples, Ottoman villages clinging to mountainsides, labyrinthine bazaars of domes and intrigue. The country's coastline is equally evocative, turquoise waters shimmering beneath towering cliffs and canopies of pine forest. This unique itinerary combines both paradigms as it sets sail for the unexplored. It includes seven days on board a luxury private yacht and a daily itinerary of archaeological and cultural splendor.

This is a vacation for those who love to be outdoors, the sailing combined with easy coastal hikes to relics and villages that remain far off the beaten track. Start your luxury travel with two days each in Istanbul and Cappadocia, before a day spent discovering the ancient city of Ephesus. Then you climb aboard the Cavulari, a 65-foot wooden yacht that blends timeless elegance with modern indulgence. Spend seven days cruising the Turquoise Coast before a final night in Istanbul completes the vacation.

Each day on this itinerary features a series of highlights, all enjoyed at a serene pace. Istanbul provides a fitting start, 2,000 years of history explored on walking tours and a gentle cruise along the divide between continents. Discover all the world-renowned sights like the Hagia Sophia, Spice Market, and sultans' palaces that burst with opulence. From the architecturally dazzling cityscape you head to the geologically baffling landscape of Cappadocia. Half-day hikes immerse you in lunar-like valleys and surreal caves. Descend into underground cities, admire rock-cut churches, and absorb the tranquility that's going to be a constant feature of the rest of the itinerary. Day five takes you to the ruins of Ephesus where temples and columns rise high above the landscape.

The next week is spent along the rugged yet tranquil Turquoise Coast. Each day runs at a leisurely pace; breakfast on board, swimming in deserted bays, sailing to cute coastal villages, snorkeling above ruins, and savoring a completely undeveloped piece of the Mediterranean. After a morning sail you spend the afternoons exploring the relics on land. Easy coastal hikes take you to 4th century tombs, baths used by Cleopatra, ghost towns, and ancient capital cities now in ruins. Expect to see ongoing panoramas of turquoise waters and very few other tourists. As this is your private yacht, the timings and exact itinerary can be tailored on a daily basis dependent on the mood.

Turkey Luxury Trip Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Hierapolis, Bosphorus, Eight-Day Tour
It was a fantastic trip to Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Hierapolis, and, finishing my eight-day adventure set up by Zicasso’s travel agent, a tour along the Bosphorus. His company did it all for me! It would not have been possible for me to organize such an excellent trip.

Turkey Vacation Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Aphrodisias, Private Boat Charter, Rug Factory Tour
Marcus prepared a fantastic trip for us. Turkey has long been on my bucket list, and it blew away all my expectations. During the planning process, Marcus really listened to what we wanted to see/do plus understood our travel style and provided excellent suggestions that we never would have considered. For example, on a long transfer day, he recommended that we stop in Aphrodisias to see this ancient Greek city to break up the drive. It ended up being one of our favorite locations, and while not quite the level of splendor as more famous Ephesus, we preferred it because it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, seeing only a handful of people during our two hours there. The hotels were perfectly selected (the staff at our Cappadocia cave hotel were the nicest people ever), his food recommendations were spot-on (Turkish cuisine is amazing), and I am happy that I was introduced to the Turkish liquor called Raki. Our point of contact while in Turkey made it feel like we had a friend in the country who could assist with anything. Very helpful and extremely responsive with whatever we needed - he went above and beyond, and we owe him a HUGE thank you! Istanbul is now one of my favorite cities I've ever visited, Cappadocia's unique landscapes and the quintessential sunrise hot air balloon ride there were magical, and I am already dreaming of a return trip. Expertly planned and executed.

Turkey Vacation Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Basilica Cistern, Bosphorus Cruise, Hot-Air Balloon Ride, Dinner at Agent's Home, Underground City, 12 Nights

This was my second Zicasso trip, the first being to Peru in 2024, so I had full confidence in their travel company and was delighted by the level of care and attention to detail throughout the trip.

I essentially had three trips while in Turkey. I arrived a day early to attend a six-day cooking school that was independently arranged. The travel company smoothly organized my airport pickup and first-night hotel. After the cooking school, I was again booked in the original hotel (old town, close to major sites, clean, nice), and my daughter joined me for a week-long tour of Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Ephesus.

The guides in each region were knowledgeable, though we could have made do with fewer facts (height in meters of the Blue Mosque, area in square meters of Hagia Sophia, number of sheep in the country) and had more free time to explore on our own. We loved the major Istanbul sites, the Bosphorus cruise, and lunch on the Asia side. We were delighted with our cave hotel in Cappadocia and the hot-air balloon ride on my daughter's birthday. We loved strolling through Ephesus.

All the internal flights were arranged, booked, and checked in by the agent, so all we had to do was show up on time. The vans that transported us were clean and nice, with good drivers. After my daughter left, I was booked for three nights on a gulet, with stops on the Mediterranean. It was a nice way to slow down and finish the busy trip.

The highlight of my travels was dinner at my agent's home with his lovely family. He even arranged for me to find some earrings like those of his mother, which I had admired, and then drove me to the airport. Above and beyond!

Travel Review: Turkey Tour, Istanbul, Ephesus, Izmir, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride

We got back home a little after midnight Sunday morning, so I just wanted to shoot you a quick email to let you know how everything went.

To sum it all up, the trip was awesome.  Everyone was waiting for us at the airports, and the transfers to and from the hotels were perfect.  The guide in Cappadocia was great as was the hotel.  The hot air balloon ride was amazing and we were so happy it was able to be moved back a day since we didnt get to Kale Konak until very late.

There was a little confusion at Enterprise with the GPS while renting the car in Izmir, but everything worked out.  Our agent called us right before we got to the hotel is Kusadasi to let us know they were having electrical issues and moving the guests to different hotels.  The replacement hotel was awesome, right on the sea with a balcony and a great view.  The guide that took us to Ephesus was great as well, and despite the heat we had a great day of tours.

Driving to Aphrodisias and Pamukkale was easy enough and both sites were beautiful.  Except for the hornets in Aphrodisias.  Yes, big hornets.  While walking through the main gate, not the entrance gate but one of the first ruins you get to (I forget the exact name) both my girlfriend and I were stung on the ankles by huge hornets.  We got away from them and were able to finish touring despite the pain, but we saw hornets in other areas of the site.  I'm not sure if you have heard of this before, but it may be worth mentioning to other people to watch out for.  Pamukkale was beautiful and we made it to the airport in Denizli with plenty of time to spare.

Istanbul was crazy.  Just so many people, it got overwhelming at times.  The driver had some trouble finding the apartment after picking us up from the airport, but we eventually made it.  The guide in Istanbul was......interesting.  He was nice enough, but it felt like we wasted a ton of time on the first day of touring.  We didn't get to the first site until a little after noon that Wednesday, and spent most of the morning walking around neighborhoods and stopping for tea or coffee.  It wasn't bad, but at one point my girlfriend asked if we were actually going to see something that day.  He also didn't think it was a good use of time to go eat lunch at Ciya.  I dont know enough to say whether he was right or wrong, but considering how much time it felt was wasted just walking around, it probably would not have hurt.  Anyway, he was a nice guide (eccentric but nice), but I wanted to give you an honest evaluation of everything.

Luxury Turkey Vacation Review: Pergamum, Ephesus, Aphrodisias, Pamukkale, Antalya, Cappadocia, History, 1-Week Trip
Bulent set up an excellent trip for our group to cover the major sites in Turkey. His choice of the guides he used were excellent for the sites. Our guide has a fantastic knowledge of ancient history of Pergamum, Ephesus, Aphrodisias, Pamukkale and Antalya. Another guide took over at Cappadocia and was also amazing with his in depth knowledge of all the sites and deep history of the happenings in this surreal area of Turkey. All our hotels were top quality and each having their unique charm that let us relax after very busy days of site seeing. Bulent took care of all our bookings and even sent us our boarding passes for our flights so we didn't have to bother. We missed the hot air balloons due to weather but Bulent bought our dinner wine as a nice gesture.  We will use him again when we return to see the sites we missed.

Luxury Family Turkey Vacation Review: Izmir, Istanbul, Ephesus, Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride

Excellent trip to Turkey including Cappadocia, Ephesus/Izmir and Istanbul. Great knowledgeable guides at all locations with excellent English language skills.  They knew the history and geography very well and would provide as much or as little information as you wanted. The accommodations were first class and the restaurants and lunches were also terrific but much more than we would normally be accustomed to eating. All the pick ups were on time and went without a hitch. The coordination of all the services was superb.

Overall a fantastic experience very well coordinated by this travel agency in the US. I would recommend this agency to anyone without reservation
