Antigua – Arrive in Guatemala and Transfer to the Colonial City of Antigua

As your flight descends into La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, look out over the volcanic peaks that outline the city. The lush trees and summits contrast with the high-rise buildings and spreading urbanity. Guatemala City has many treasures hidden in its large size, from upscale shopping centers to celebrated museums. The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indigena displays textiles and clothing from the 120 indigenous communities that live in the country.  The museum, named for the Mayan goddess of fertility and weaving, features various forms of huipiles,  traditional loose-fitting tunics for women and are featured in the variety of heritage pieces showcasing the cultures of the country.

Your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival, and will be ready to take you into the charming colonial city of Antigua. The historic streets provide a relaxed ambiance compared to those of the bustling Guatemala City. Shingled rooftops slope over pastel-colored buildings; the scent of roasting coffee beans emanates from the garden cafes. Three distinct volcano peaks surround the former Guatemalan capital. The central plaza of Parque Central is busy in the evening as you stroll along the verdant grass. Belize Travel Review: Placencia, Mayan Ruins, Snorkeling, Horseback Riding, 8-Day Vacation
My wife and I had an amazing trip to Belize. Catarina was amazing, I had planned this for a couple years and Covid hit. I texted her years later in March, she responded immediately by name. She planned a perfect vacation understanding who we were and what we liked. Very easy to get a hold of. Belize is beautiful. The resorts in the Jungle and by the Sea, were top notch. Love the Mayan ruins and went horseback though the beautiful grounds. Went to an awesome 4 mile caye to snorkel for the day. All tours and staff at the hotels were awesome. Loved Placencia the peninsula, used golf carts to get around!

Travel Review: Luxury Tour of Guatemala, Tikal, Antigua, Flores, Lake Attitlan, Volcano Hike

The trip was everything we had hoped for and more. Each of the guides were fantastic whether it was in Antigua, Atitlan, or Flores, fantastic.

Accommodations provided in Antigua weren't what was agreed upon between vendor and hotel. A portion of the cost was recovered. We even told the hotel what we were supposed to get upon check in and they said that was it. We found out from other employees it wasn't.  Our travel agency worked to get some funds back.

Did I mention the guides were great?

Belize Vacation Review: Placencia, Belize City, Adventure

Overall it was a great trip

Unfortunately the trip was delayed and we lost a day due to weather.  While I was spending hours attempting to find replacement flights it would have been great if the we could have found out it the lodge would have refunded a night or given any accommodation or partial refund  Drivers were great-I wish we had stopped at the zoo on the way-if we had known about it-

The folks a the resort in Placencia were incredibly friendly -the room was ok-There was some confusion at first whether our plan included breakfast and while I confirmed the day before that our flight to Belize City was at 11-the time was changed and we had to rush-only to spend hours at a very crowded airport

The adventures at the lodge were incredible and I would have like the extra day there as opposed to Palcencia when we were delayed-That said the snorkeling was amazing as were the guides on that trip

Our travel agent was great in the planning phase as he really heard that adventure was key for us

Thanks!

Travel Company Comments

Thank you for your honest review. It’s unfortunate that your departure was affected by a snowstorm and your flight was cancelled causing you a 24-hour delay. We were unable to secure a refund from your jungle lodge for your missed night there. We prepay our hotels in full and they generally do not give us any refunds if changes or cancellations are made less than 15 days prior to arrival. We requested a credit from your jungle lodge, explaining that your delay was due to a flight cancellation beyond your control, however as it was a weekend we did not receive a reply from them until after you had already checked-in, when they informed us that they had already communicated the information to you. Issues like this are why we strongly recommend our clients purchase a travel insurance policy which would reimburse you for any lost expenses.

Sorry about the inconvenience in regard to your Placencia flight.  Internal flight schedules in Belize are somewhat casual in nature and the airlines frequently change their schedules and combine flights to maximize their efficiency. This can be frustrating and I’m sorry you had to leave earlier than scheduled and spend more time than planned to connect in the airport.

I’m glad you enjoyed the jungle so much, I knew that particular jungle lodge would be the perfect place for you.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your trip to Belize, we would be delighted to assist you with any future travel plans.

Belize Travel Review: Placencia, Ambergris Caye, Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, Snorkeling with Sea Life
The travel planner with the travel company planned the perfect beach vacation for us in Belize.  Our planner is very knowledgeable about the many options Belize has to offer.  We wanted a warm beach vacation and she picked two perfect places. Placencia, the town was fun to explore we could walk there on the beach or bike on the road.  The resort villas had Kayaks, Paddleboards, Bikes and Golf Carts.   We had a fantastic snorkeling excursion to the Silk Cayes.  The next stop was the Resort and Spa on Ambergris Caye, the resort was amazing! They also provided bikes, Kayaks, Paddleboards and Golf Carts for exploring the area.  We had two days of snorkeling where we saw sharks, star fish, barracuda, among the plentiful sea life there.  We chose Belize because they were testing for Covid 19 pre entry and felt that would be a safer environment.  And both hotels had testing before departure back to the U.S.It was stress free and our travel planner checked in on us daily, how can you beat that!

Review: Luxury South America Vacation, Guatemala, Belize, Peten, San Ignacio, Cayo, Ambergris Caye, Mayan Ruins, Antigua

This South America travel company is an excellent vacation planner.  They listened to my request and produced an itinerary that was perfect. It was physically challenging for us, but there was enough free time built in to recover and to regroup.

We cannot heap enough praises in the folks in Guatemala who provided the walking tours of Antigua and the Mayan temple sites that were so magnificent.

I have three recommendations to make:  Some system needs to be devised to calculate tips for the drivers and the guides who spent hours with us. When you pay a lump sum for the whole 10 day vacation, it is difficult to calculate the a 10% or 15% or 20% tip for any one small segment. What is 15% of ???.  Every time I asked the question, what is a generous tip for your service, I got the same unhelpful answer;  'Whatever you want'.  By the way, there are not many ATMs in Guatemala and Hotels do not like to make change.

At Lake Atitlan it is well known that in the afternoon there is enough wind to create severe white caps.  We were picked up at 2:00 pm and for two Octogenarians it was a bit difficult to climb onto a rocking boat. Once on board, we discovered that the captain (lanchero) did not speak English and we could not discuss or influence the itinerary. We finally managed to explain that we would prefer to be back on Terra Firma, but by now it was too rough to dock anywhere and so we simply cruised along the shore for an hour or so until we found a quiet harbor. We were met there by the owner of the boat (these are very sturdy, dry and well built boats by the way) who spoke English and who treated is very graciously and got us back to the Hotel Atitlan on a Chuck Chuck. We still don't know what was supposed to have been on the itinerary and what we might have seen. But the boat ride was fun in any case.

All drivers and guides invariably showed up promptly and were very professional.  The one exception was on the last morning, when we waited at the San Ignacio Hotel in Belize to be driven to the Airport.  After an hour of waiting, the Hotel provided us with a driver and we got to the airport on time.

Our vacation was very memorable, sprinkled with just the right amount of uncertainty and excitement to make it one of the better ones for us. Guatemala in particular is a very nice country to visit, and our travel agency did a fine job.
