Antigua – Arrive in the Magnificent Colonial City of Antigua in Guatemala
Antigua is a city of history and compelling beauty. Once the capital of Guatemala, until a devastating earthquake left its indelible mark in the 1700s, the well-preserved buildings carry centuries-old scars in forms of dilapidated columns and fractured ceilings that contrast with the lavish constructions of Spanish wealth. Your flight lands at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City and as you descend you notice the natural beauty of the surrounding volcanic peaks that enclose the cityscape. The skyscrapers in the heart of the city rise to meet the summits of the surrounding peaks but fail to reach the height of the natural, towering mountains.
Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim to escort you to the colonial streets outside of Guatemala City. The car winds through the hills on the scenic drive as lush trees climb the hillside. Tiny local restaurants built on outcrops offer a panorama of the city below, framed by the undulating landscape on the horizon. The cobblestone streets of Antigua welcome you as pastel painted buildings line the road, topped with tiled roofs. Hidden courtyards provide open spaces to the former mansions and current businesses and vines streak across the walls.
Fountains trickle into stone pools and in the summer, the breeze blows across the water and with refreshing mist that carries through the halls. After settling into your hotel, make your way to the Chocolate Museum located on Calle del Arco, near the Arc of Santa Catalina. The aroma of rich chocolate fills the entrance, and your instructor will offer you a taste of tea, coffee, and cocoa nibs. Your introduction to the city comes by way of a chocolate lesson, as you learn the process of cultivation, fermentation, drying, and even roasting the beans before consumption. Your instructor teaches you the proper way to grind the nibs and mix in the grounds to prepare the decadent hot chocolate.

First, we want to say that our trip to Belize was exactly what we were hoping for! We reached out to Zicasso for help planning our honeymoon to Belize and were matched up with the travel agent at the travvel company. We had envisioned a beach honeymoon that included relaxing on the beach but also scuba diving multiple times during the week. We are also foodies and love to experience a countries cuisine via private dinners or cooking classes wherever we travel. Our agent heard all of our requests and brought it to life for us. It was a perfect combination of romantic and relaxing, while also being fun and adventurous at times. We spent 7 days total in Belize. The first portion was spent on a private island resort close to Dangriga. We could only utilize a boat to get on and off the island. We had one day of diving and the rest of the time was spent relaxing on the beach, drinking fruity drinks, and eating delicious food. The resort was very welcoming and accommodating. Our final night on the island included a private dinner with the head chef of the resort. That was certainly a highlight of the trip! This first leg of our trip was truly incredible and forced us to unwind and really detach ourselves from our hectic home lives and enjoy the moment in time that we had on this beautiful Caye. The second portion of the trip was spent on Ambergris Caye at another 5 star resort just outside of bustling San Pedro. We stayed in a beach front cabana. Having our front door open up to the sandy beach, with the ocean steps from our front door was breathtaking! The food and service at the resort were top notch and the diving excursions we had were something we will not ever forget. Throughout the trip the travel company was just an email or phone call away. They checked in on us throughout the vacation making sure everything was going smoothly. We constantly felt taken care of and that our happiness and satisfaction with our trip/experience were the most important thing to this travel agency. We cannot recommend the travel agent and her affiliates enough if you are planning a trip to Belize. Everything service related (both by the agency and the resorts) was impeccable and executed seamlessly and took any and all travel related stress away. When we go back to Belize we will be using the travel agency again! Thank you so much for the amazing honeymoon and the fantastic memories we created while in Belize.

Wonderful trip to Guatemala! This tour company was incredibly professional and planned a perfect vacation for us. The personalized itinerary fitted our needs and desires exactly and the guides they provided were the best we have ever had. The hotels in Antigua, Lake Atitlan and Tikal were all outstanding. They were so prompt in replying to our questions and everything went seamlessly.

My husband and I adopted a baby girl from Guatemala when she was 8-months-old. We have always told her that we would return with her to Guatemala someday so she can see her birth country. She is 15 now, and we decided it was time to return during her Spring Break. We were only in Guatemala for three days in 2002 when we went to meet and bring home our daughter, so we saw almost nothing of the country. This time around, we wanted to spend 10 days or so and see most of the highlights of the country as well as really experience the culture. After lots of research about Guatemala, I selected highlights or activities that I wanted worked into our trip: visiting Lake Atitlan, Antigua, Chichicastenango, Tikal, a coffee plantation, and an active volcano.
After deciding more or less on what we wanted to do while there, I next had to decide whether we would use a tour operator, and if so, what kind of tour did we want. My husband and I were concerned about safety during the visit due to current State Department warnings and various internet reports of violence against tourists to Guatemala. This made the decision about whether to engage a tour operator or not easy -- we definitely wanted the expertise of a tour operator familiar with the country. We also decided to make the trip a private tour even though it substantially increased the price. We felt the additional cost was worth it to have the extra attention and focus of private guides during the entire trip. After lots more internet research about tour companies for Guatemala, I reached out to 4 companies with a basic description of what we wanted and when we wanted to travel.
ZIcasso was one of the companies I contacted. I had read very good reviews about their services on the internet. This agent was the first of the four companies i had contacted to respond to me. I told her what we wanted to include in the trip, how long we wanted the trip to be, and when we wanted to go. In just a day or so, she sent me a complete proposed itinerary. Over the next few days, we communicated several more times, and we refined to what I had envisioned it. Our agent also reassured us about the safety of traveling in Guatemala -- especially with the experienced, local English-speaking guides we would have at all times. The other companies I had initially contacted did not respond as promptly as Zicasso and were not as responsive to our wishes about the itinerary. We felt very comfortable with Zicasso and the itinerary they had developed for us, and so we decided to book our trip with them.
Our trip ended up being just perfect! My husband, our 20-year-old son, our adopted 15-year-old daughter, and I were the travelers. We felt completely safe and at ease the entire 10 days we were in the country. During the trip, we had 3 guides. Each was outstanding! They all spoke English well. They were all very pleasant, easy to get along with, and patient and accommodating when we requested "off-the-itinerary" diversions. For example, during the entire trip, my son had looked for an authentic Guatemalan National Soccer Team jersey to purchase but had not seen one anywhere. On our last day in the country, our agent went out of his way and took us to 4 different stores in Guatemala City trying to find the jersey for him. On another occasion, during a "free day" on Lake Atitlan, our son wanted to go cliff jumping. Our guide was not scheduled to be with us, but he volunteered to arrange a cliff jumping trip for us on the lake. The next day he showed up at the hotel with a private boat and two drivers. They took us to a small village on the lake where there were cliffs from which it was safe to jump. Our guide not only arranged the trip and accompanied us to the village for the cliff jumping, but actually jumped with my son (my husband, daughter, and I did not jump :-). We cannot say enough good things about the guides -- they made the trip!
We all agreed that this is one of the best family trips we have ever had.

The trip to Belize was absolutely fantastic! We had an amazing time exploring Barton Creek Cave, Caracol, and Big Rock Falls at our first resort at the Blancaneaux Lodge. I highly recommend paying the extra money to book a flight to San Ignacio, Maya Flats, and having the shorter drive of 45 min - 1 hour instead of the long drive from Belize City to Blancaneaux Lodge which is 2 1/2 hours. The drive from the airport to the resort was a very hard drive due to the road being so rocky and not what you want to do after travelling for 8 hours.
Our second stop was at Victoria House on Ambergris Caye, this place was absolutely amazing as well. The food was fantastic at Blancaneaux Lodge and Victoria House! The people of Belize are so friendly and helpful and did not make you feel unsafe at all.
Our travel agency helped us book a flight from San Ignacio to San Pedro and were very receptive to emails/calls while we were in Belize. They are absolutely fantastic to work with and I would love to work with them in the future!
Your overall comments on Zicasso
I found out about zicasso through a google search because I was very unhappy with a local travel agent in Raleigh. Zicasso service was very helpful with travel agents that know the area best that you are visiting!

Our Zicasso tour operator's suggestions and planning for my first trip to Belize were beyond amazing and outstanding, especially given the short amount of time given for planning and then our requested change of dates about a month before flying. Together, we put together a land package that included the Mayan ruins and cave tubing.
The private transportation driver who took us to the mountain was patient in waiting for our delayed flight and knowledgeable in pointing out areas of interest on the two-hour trip.
We stayed at a hotel which was quaint, clean, and beautiful. The staff were completely service-driven. Our driver/guide for the Mayan ruins and cave tubing was extremely polite and so knowledgeable. We loved him! Cave tubing is way too much fun and I am looking forward to going back to do it again. Our travel agent added an unexpected and welcomed tour through an iguana conservation project located at the hotel.
The small plane/flight to Ambergris Caye was easy and gave great views. The inn right on the beach was cute, quaint, and small. It was in a great location to get away from the business of San Pedro by walking along the beachside or getting into the hustle/bustle of the town by walking one block.
We took two snorkel excursions on which both crews were extremely knowledgeable, polite, and very nice. One had us going out on a sailboat, which was a pleasant surprise.
We were able to rent a golf cart directly through the hotel, whose staff were kind and provided exceptional customer service, to travel to Secret Beach.
One minor thing was being on the second floor of the hotel instead of the ground floor, but we completely understand that we were probably lucky to have even got a room there due to our late changes.
We are more than excited about planning a trip to go back next year!

The trip was great, but with a few unpleasant surprises.
We were not properly informed about the usual weather pattern in January; officially in the dry season but with almost daily heavy rainstorms lasting more than one hour, specifically in Belize and Tikal, less so in Antigua.
We ere not well informed about the quality and remoteness of La Lancha; although presented as a top resort close to Tikal; we would rate the resort at best as a 3 star level with a long and bumpy dirt road access (more than 30 minutes each way) and about 90 minutes away from Tikal.
Communication by our tour company was poor, infrequent and general in nature rather than focused on our needs.
Overall Comments about Zicasso:
excellent experience with Zicasso on a previous trip to Argentina
