Punta Arenas – Day at Leisure in Punta Arenas
The city of Punta Arenas overlooks the Strait of Magellan in the southern corners of Chilean Patagonia. The historic port and a tradition of sheep-breeding has supported the sophisticated European architecture wrapping around Plaza Muñoz Gamero. Opulent mansions reminiscent of the regional wool-boom decorate the skyline in view of the statue of Ferdinand Magellan, which was erected to commemorate the voyager’s 400th anniversary. Your flight will land at Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport, where your private transfer escorts you to the luxurious Hotel Cabo de Hornos.
Your gorgeous accommodations are located in the heart of town near the main square of La Plaza Central. The building harkens back to the days when Punta Arenas stood as the capital of Chile’s “white gold” rush, referring to the quick pace and incredible demand of wool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cozy ambiance welcomes you to Chile with views of the stunning cityscape and reflective waters from the Strait of Magellan. The light and cheerful décor of your room effortlessly combines the history of Hotel Cabo de Hornos with the comforts of modern luxury.
Before you explore the charms of Punta Arenas, you will meet with the celebrated photographer and local guide, Justin Hofman, for more insight into the remarkable adventure to come. The acclaimed photographer, scuba diver, and naturalist has a spent a career documenting wildlife acquiring an extensive knowledge of ecology and animal behavior along the way. After meeting Justin and your guide, you will set out to visit Cementerio Municipal, one of the most interesting cemeteries in South America. Elegant and opulent tombs decorate the grounds, which contrasts with the humbler graves of immigrants who often worked the farms. The grand José Menéndez’s tomb is an imitation of the Vittorio Emanuele II monument in Rome, made to scale.

Great trip- Chile is a beautiful country! Our trip planner did a good job of communicating with us overall. I appreciate her work checking on things to make sure they had cribs, etc and helping us make some last minute changes. We asked a few times for a list of restaurant recommendations that we never received so that would have been good. Also, I wish she had suggested that we fly in and out of puerto natales rather than punta arenas. We also did not enjoy our hotel in Punta Arenas (wasn't horrible but not as great as the other ones) and especially since the penguin tour was cancelled felt like it was a little bit of a waste.

We found Zicasso online and they referred us to this travel company. Oxana from the agency got to know us and what we were looking for during several conversations. She then put together a custom trip for us. She really listened and understood our needs. Every single detail was thought of and taken care of. The hotels in Punta Arenas and Castro were perfect. The experience at the hotel in Torres del Paine was extraordinary. I can't begin to describe the unforgettable Torres del Paine National Park.
Patricia in the operations department kept in touch throughout the trip and made sure everything went smoothly, even messaging me at 11pm on a Sunday to make sure we boarded the ferry ok. The travel agency went above and beyond to ensure our trip went smoothly. On our request, we included four nights and three days on the Navimag ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. It was delayed for two days due to bad weather, but was absolutely worth the wait!

The individuals with whom we worked at the travel company were very nice and responsive and it is overall a good and reputable provider who could stand to learn a few things. All sub-providers were prompt and waiting for us without a hitch. We found all guides and drivers to be extremely friendly and personable, and for the most part well-organized.
The provider in the Atacama, was highly educated and experienced in touring. He helped arrange early check-in at the hotel in San Pedro which was very helpful
We only have a few "teachable" items to report:
1. The 2:50 a.m. pickup at the hotel in Valparaiso was absolutely brutal. The hotel said that they would have something for breakfast while we waited for our guide to pick us up. We arrived downstairs and there were a few stale cookies out from the prior evening and no coffee. The young man working the night shift scrambled to get some coffee together for us, but unfortunately we had to wait until we got to the airport in Santiago for the trip to Calama to get a meaningful meal (at our expense). Our guide, however, stayed with us to efficiently navigate domestic check-in, and even arranged for a little known way to get discounted checked baggage handling with the airlines that saved us quite a bit of money.
As we later discovered, there is a hotel at SCL airport where we feel it would have been better to stay instead of overnight in Valparaiso, as due to the early wakeup we were not going to take advantage of the night-life there. Logistically, we would have liked a little better advice in this regard as the recovery from the early wakeup was tedious. We felt like overall using a booking agent was worthwhile, as we probably could not have had such good coverage with the limited amount of time we had to spend planning.
2. HUGE discrepancy in Patagonia itinerary led us to initially believe we were flying in to Puerto Natales (1 1/2 hours to Torres del Paine), but it turns out we were actually booked to Punta Arenas (4 1/2 hour drive to Torres del Paine). Much to our displeasure, the hotel had sent a small vehicle for transit to the Park and we were crammed very uncomfortably into the backseat for the entire ride minus the stops. It was late in the game when the travel company had to change these arrangements (they did not notice the discrepancy until I called a trip planner and pointed it out), and the hotel said all their larger vehicles were in use at the time. NOT HAPPY with the error on the itinerary nor the transit from Punta Arenas to the park! The return to Punta Arenas was much more accommodating.
3. Given that we did a pay a premium for the travel company to arrange logistics, we would have hoped for a recommendation for the star-gazing tour in the Atacama. This is one of the top attractions of the desert. We feel that we just told them what we wanted to do and they did what they could to accommodate our requests without much additional creativity or forethought to some of the itinerary and logistics.

The trip was wonderful! The Zicasso travel agency did a superb job of creating a fun and meaningful itinerary for us. We changed a relatively large portion of the trip while in Argentina and the team was effective and efficient in creating a new itinerary for us to address the changes. I believe our trip improved from this intervention. Our agent was gracious and kind, and I am grateful that we had her support and help.
The only reason I gave four instead of five stars was due to the choice of hotel in Puerto Natales. It seems the industry hires local travel companies to book in their areas. If someone from the tour company had visited this hotel, they most likely would not have booked us in it. It was more like a hostel than a hotel: it had no elevator, but four floors, with 20 stairs per floor; the plumbing broke; the fixtures were in poor repair; the rooms were tiny, with even smaller showers; and the front faced a veterinary hospital with barking dogs throughout the night.
My recommendation to the tour company is to visit the places they book clients in to see what they are like, whether hotels, restaurants, or box lunches. That way, they would know what they are recommending.
