Beijing – First View of the Temple of Heaven

Beijing has served as the political center of China for more than eight centuries, holding an important role in the culture, historical, and economic life of the country. The contemporary skyscrapers add layers of reflective glass and steel to the skyline, with the CCTV Building reaching a height of nearly 770 feet above the surrounding streets. The structure connects a series of horizontal and vertical sections, resembling an irregular cube when seen from certain angles, embodying the creativity and modernity of a city radiant with ancient splendor. Your flight lands at Beijing Capital International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon arrival.

Restaurants brim with people, from the upscale pageantry within the business district to the labyrinth of tiny stalls hidden around corners and within narrow alleys offering the enticing aromas of vegetable dumplings and succulent noodles. You take your time basking in the comforts of your 5-star hotel before meeting your guide in the lobby, taking you first to the grounds of Tiananmen Square, located near your accommodation. The plaza is one of the largest in the world, encompassing 4,736,120 square feet. Chills run down your spine as you replay the image of the “Tank Man,” a single man holding grocery bags, challenging a tank within the confines of the infamous square.

The gate to the Royal Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties runs along the plaza’s northern edge. The orange tiles atop the sloped roof stand out from the polished red wall, which reaches a height of nearly 115 feet above the paving stones. People pass through the square on a daily basis without referencing the historical impact of the single day in contemporary Chines history. You notice your feet echoing off the stone as you walk. The decorative hedges reflect off the shimmering red wall of the Gate of Heavenly Peace. You stand beneath the granite tower of the Monument to the People’s Heroes, which was erected in the 1950s along two rows of white marble railings for a simple and elegant tribute to China’s more contemporary history.

Travel Review: Tour of Mongolia, Japan & South Korea, Seoul, Gobi, Gers, Hakone, Miyajima, Hiroshima, Shirakawago, Naadam Festival

The flight from San Francisco to Seoul went well followed by a good hotel and a good guide in Seoul. The bus tour was most interesting even though we had to skip some area due to the N. Koreans recently laying land mines (so we were told) and some pretty heavy rain. A bit of a surprise came when the tour bus stopped somewhere in Seoul and we were told that the tour ends here and that there are bus and subway connections nearby. The guide did not recognize our hotel or how to get there by bus or subway. Fortunately a women in a kiosk near by spoke English and knew about our hotel and said that for less than $10 we could get there by taxi. The guide and the women stopped a taxi and evidently explained where we wanted to go since we got to our hotel for less than $10 by that taxi. A "heads up" on getting back to our hotel would have been helpful.

The flight to Mongolia went well and since we were a little early in getting to UB we were not concerned that there was no one with our name sign waiting for us. I changed money and we waited. Eventually another guide (guide 1) asked us who we were waiting for. I explained we were with this travel agency and were waiting for a representative. Guide 1 then called some of the contact numbers we had but there was no response (it was Sunday). Shortly another guide (guide 2) joined us and asked at which hotel we were to stay. He called the hotel but they said they never heard of us and of course we had no hotel vouchers to show. At this point both guides 1 and 2 said that they never heard of our travel agency and they suggested that we may have been duped by a "fly by night" operator! I stuck up for you and said that I had confidence in the company. Guide 1 repeatedly called various contact numbers and eventually reached a driver, who spoke almost no English, for the tour company who eventually arrived at the airport and did get us booked into our hotel. Later both a manager for tour company and our guide called us and explained that they had been given the wrong time for our plane to arrive in UB and apologized for the mix-up. They were expecting us several hours later. I tried to give guide 1 a nice tip for all his persistent calling but he declined it-however he had told us that he was going to his son's 6th birthday party later and so I convinced him the tip was for his son's birthday present (which he then took!).Our Mongolia guide was very good. We got to see an "Independence day" ceremony (and the installation of the new Mongolian president) in the main town square and also the 2 hours opening ceremonies of the Naadam festival along with parts of all the activities: wrestling, archery, horse racing, and anklebone shooting. The side trips from UB and the stays in Gers in the Gobi were most interesting and enjoyable. The guide showed us a partially buried dinosaur bone (he claimed to have found it some time ago on one of his hiking trips) in the Flaming Cliffs area (Beverly's parents lived for many years in Beloit, WI, the home town of R. Chapman Andrews). We did do some searching for wild big horn sheep, but saw none. We did see herds of sheep, goats, horses, camels, cattle and Yaks in the Gobi and elsewhere. The flight to Tokyo went well including getting the JR reservations at Tokyo station. All the areas we visited in Japan were interesting and we learned much Japanese history. We particularly enjoyed the "wild river boat ride" and the stays in the Ryokans. The stay in Shirakawago was especially interesting with over sized Japanese breakfast and dinner. At breakfast we were also treated to a "hat" dance and got to play along with percussion instruments. It was a bit difficult keeping all the different temples and shrines straight but we did our best.A bit of a problem came up when we got to Odawara Station from Miayjima. We were told that a shuttle from the hotel had to be booked in advance and that a taxi would cost around $75 if one could be found. Eventually we learned about the Mountain Train which we took to Gora station for less than $20. We then got the hotel to send a car for us even though it was past the usual shuttle time to Gora Station.  So we finally got to the hotel from Miayjima but too late for the hotel's "Early evening free drinks hour" . (the hotel put some hefty prices on some of their drinks: I noticed a "grocery store" bottle of Robt. Mondavi at $140). It would have been useful if we had known about the possibility of the Mountain Train etc. Our Hakone guide was very helpful and even though it was rainy and foggy much of the time (we did get to see the mountains occasionally from our mountain view room but we never did get to see Mt. Fuji at all) we did get to see the outdoor museum, the volcano, and to take a nice cruise on the lake.In conclusion we would say that we found all the guides to be very good. They took good care of us and catered to our wishes and often used taxis when we got fatigued. We feel that the high points of the tour were:1. N. Korea visit via the JSA at Panmunjom.2. Naadam festival activities.3. Gers/Gobi experience.4  Shirakawago/Ryokan stays.5. Hozugawa river boat ride.6. Hiroshima (Hypo-center/A bomb memorial). The minor sticking points of the trip were:1. Getting back to our hotel after DMZ/JSA tour.2. Finding transportation from Odawara to the hotel. The low point of the tour:Being told in Mongolia that we may have been duped by a "fly by night" tour operator. If you have any particular questions for us just let us know.Marvin/Beverly Mielke

Travel Review: China Tour, Beijing, Xi'An, Yangshuo, Li River Cruise, Panda Research Center, Cooking & Tai Chi Classes

Our China travel agency did a very good job of scheduling the trip and rescheduling when necessary. The guides in each location we visited were friendly and committed to being helpful.  There were times when the language barrier was an issue, but no more so than during other international trips. We underestimated the physical demands of the itinerary we had approved. The guides were very willing to accommodate and offered alternate plans. It would be helpful if our travel agency provided more details about the physical demands of the sites they propose. Example: We visited the Jinshanling Great Wall site.  It's a Trekker level site. We didn't read the description closely enough and we're not trekkers.  It was a beautiful, though much reduced climb.  By the time we left China we were exhausted and burned-out.  A slower pace, with less climbing would have been better (we're over 65 and in ok physical shape).

An item beyond our travel agency's control - Domestic airline flights become less reliable as the monsoon season approaches.  We experienced several delays but were fortunate that they didn't jeopardize our schedule until we were leaving for home.  We missed our connecting flight to the USA because of a 4 hr delay in Beijing. Bullet trains were very reliable, clean and pleasant.  But we did not use them during the rains so don't know how much they suffer rain-delays.

Travel Review: Luxury Family China Vacation, Beijing, Bayan Nur, Xi'an, Guilin, Terracotta Warriors, Great Wall Hiking, Bamboo Boat

Our China travel agent did the best job possible of arranging a very complication travel schedule for my husband and I, as well as, our two daughters (one living in China) and one son in law!  We had kids coming and going at different times to meet their limited vacation/work schedules.  It wasn't easy, but our agent made it seem easy and understood what needed to be done from our first contact.  The other agency that responded (late), didn't seem to really read the information I provided to the Zicasso.com website.  Clearly, our agent read and understood what needed to be done to make our vacation work for everyone.

While we went back and forth, our agent provided excellent advice (yes, the super speed G train was an excellent choice!) and created a memorable itinerary.  We knew generally where we wanted to go (Beijing, Xi'an and Guilin), but our agent filled the itinerary with expected sightseeing (Terracotta soldiers, Forbidden City, etc.), but also fun - bike ride, cooking class, second river trip, incredible Great Wall hike (an experience, not just checking it off the list).  At each step our agent explained options, so I knew that we were selecting the best options for the amount of time that we had (it's a BIG country!).  Our agent was able to add another day of sightseeing for us in Beijing (one day notice!) after we changed our mind about having a day off our last day in Beijing (everything was so easy, that we decided we could keep going one more day!).

The hotels our agent selected were EXCELLENT!  The guides and drivers that our agent selected were fantastic!  They didn't just drop you off, they came into the hotel/airport/train station, so if anything was wrong (which it wasn't), they could have handled any problems immediately.  There was only one hiccup in the 12 day trip (amazing!), and our agent went the extra effort to make things right immediately.  We could contact our agent 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, but we also had the names and mobile numbers for all our guides/drivers ahead of time.  The guides were all knowledgeable, friendly and engaging which added greatly to our enjoyment.  They selected great restaurants and wonderful dishes.  The guides were also patient while we took many pictures.  We never felt rushed and they re-arranged our lunches twice (without skipping a beat!) because we a bit slow sightseeing.  As promised the tours were all no shopping trips.

Your overall comments on Zicasso

Not really sure how I found your website, but this was our second trip using Zicasso and I am HOOKED! I love the Zicasso system. Our first trip was to Australia in 2013. I tell everyone who wants to travel to check out the Zicasso.com website. It really works!!!!

Travel Review: Luxury Trip to China and Tibet, Beiing, Shanghai, Xian, Lhasa, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Yangtze cruise
One of the best trips my wife and I have ever taken. We have been on one other tour to Turkey, and I thought I'd never go on a tour again: on the bus, off the bus, all the hotels and meals (all buffets) the same. Because of the complications, language, visa, etc., we decided to take a tour to China. The tour was excellent. Selected sites and side trips, accommodations, informational guides, transfer guides (meeting us at airports, train-stations, etc.), were all first rate, and could not have been managed in large tour groups. For example, we stayed in a deluxe housing complex next to the Great Wall, were astounded at a private museum (in a small apartment!) of shoes worn by women whose feet were bound, had a home cooked meal by a family in one of the last traditional Hutong houses in Beijing, and saw one of the great national parks in the world, full of amazing limestone formations, with only native Chinese visitors, no westerners that we saw. Best of all, the owner of this China and Tibet Tour Company, Russ, was along on the trip and added his own amazing knowledge of China and a fun, thoughtful, and flexible presence. Finally, the company was very flexible in meeting our wish to add two cities, Lhasa in Tibet and Xian, the home of the terra-cotta warriors, and an interesting, old capital itself.

Travel Review: Tour of China, Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors

This travel agent planned our 3 week trip to explore China for our party of four.  We started in Beijing and walked on the Great Wall, learned much about Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, went to Xian for the Terracotta Warriors, to Chengdu for the Pandas, Hangzhou and Tunxi, then a hike up the Huangshan Mountain; Shanghai and the Shanghai Tower, Guilin for the amazing countryside and rice terraces, Shenzhen to visit our nephew and Hong Kong as the finale.  Transportation, guides, accommodations were wonderful and effortless for us.   In a land of millions of people and many tourists, the guides slid through the crowds and found places to explore that were not as crowded as others.

Our travel company helped us coordinate visas, travel insurance, and provided tipping and shopping guidance.  Any small concern (and they were minimal) were met with a smile and addressed.  They even sent a replacement van up Longji Mountain.

I would highly recommend the travel company for your China tour.
