Travel Review: Grand China Tour - Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Li River, Yangshuo

TRIP OF A LIFETIME! We're typically do-it-yourself travelers. Overall we enjoyed our times when we were on our own more than when we were with a guide. However, we did enjoy having the driver and guide for the Great Wall (Mutianyu) and the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an. Plus our guide en route from Guilin to Yangshuo arranged the amazing sunset raft trip down the Li River. Having someone meet us and return us to the airports was extremely helpful, and at the train station, it was almost essential! We chose 4-star hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong and 5-star hotels in Xi'an and Yangshuo (although the one booked for us in Yangshuo was at most a 3-star). We opted to eat meals on our own and had no trouble in any locale even though we spoke NO Chinese. Shanghai and Hong Kong were very easy to navigate on our own, and we loved that! More than anything we wanted to see how the people lived, and we felt we were able to do that better when we were on our own. The way we structured our trip, we were able to have plenty of time on our own while utilizing the guide services only where they were truly needed.

Overall the China travel agency delivered what was asked. Our hotels met our expectations except for the 3 nights in Yangshuo (as noted above). Prior to departure we did ask that the one in Shanghai be changed as they had us staying in Pudong originally. Most of the transfers/guide services were as expected. Our guide in Xi'an (David Xu) was exceptional; however, we rated our guide in Beijing (Michele) a 4 on a 10-point scale. We did not book any of the recommended "extras" and found that was best. We could book these locally when we arrived depending on weather, timing, etc.

Travel Review: Tour of China, Beijing, Yangshuo, Xi'an, Guilin, Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, Li River Cruise

Great trip! Guides / drivers were flexible as we made changes on the trip to skip some shows and instead go to antique / art markets. Since this was our first trip with a fully pre-planned itinerary, we didn't do as much research prior to the trip as we should have to locate markets, though these changes were mostly handled without problems. Guides handled our need for vegetarian food without a hassle, we had clean air-conditioned vehicles (including our travel company happily changing one that we requested to have changed after a pick-up vehicle that smelled of smoke), and guides that were interested in us and what they had to teach us. Yangshuo guide was a bit difficult to understand at times, but very pleasant and happy to be with us. Our agent checked in whenever there was an issue (i.e., hotel setting in Chengdu was under unanticipated construction - the area around the hotel was completely torn apart by renovation, which our travel company was unaware of; however, they offered to move us. We ultimately decided to stay because the hotel itself was great, and the area intriguing). Guides should give a 5-10 minute warning to clients that destinations are nearby - until our last guide we didn't have this and often didn't realize we were about to disembark until the car stopped suddenly and we had to scramble to get our belongings together. The itinerary should indicate approximate travel times during each day from one location to another - a couple times we got in the car in the morning to find out we were in for a 1-3 hour car ride to our destination, which we could not tell from the itinerary. On a future trip we would ask for lunch to be sometime between 1-3pm, vs. at 12 which was too early for us. For the Beijing hotel, the travel company should choose a hotel other than the hotel we stayed in, since there's nothing of interest to see / do / walk through in the evenings unless travelers are into mall shopping. We prefer to be within walking distance of sites / night markets / art districts / museums, etc. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would use this company again.

Review: Family Trip to China, Hong Kong Beijing, Guilin, Great Wall Hiking, Li River Rafting

Our trip was really excellent. The guides in both Guilin and Beijing were friendly and knowledgeable about the area and history of China. We felt like we had a really nice balance between the city and the beautiful countryside including the Li River, the bamboo terraces,  and some interesting small villages. The only reason I gave the trip 4 stars instead of 5 was because the driver in Beijing was unfriendly, would not take us where the guide needed us to go, would make us wait 45 minutes before he picked us up. He  and the guide would argue every time we headed out to go somewhere. It was distressing to listen to in our vacation and put a damper on our two days in Beijing. The last day the guide had a new driver who was great.

Review: Luxury Family Trip to China, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Langshuo, Longii, Great Wall, Cooking Lesson, Tai Chi Class

My husband and I and our daughter and her husband recently spent a 16-day trip to China with this travel company.  Included in that trip were visits to Shanghai, Beijing, Great Wall at Mutianyu,  Chengdu, Langshuo, Longji and Hangshou, a total of one bullet train and 3 domestic flights.

The whole trip was absolutely fabulous and exceeded our expectations. We cannot say enough about our tour guides who were just superb and so knowledgeable.  They were just amazing and really made the trip for us.  We so appreciated all the hand holding from start to finish, especially at the train station, airports and at meal times.  They all had great attitudes, were friendly, gracious, very accommodating and full of interesting information about life in China.   They went out of their way to make sure we had the best experience possible on our trip.

Every tour, meal and travel experience was pretty much flawlessly executed.   We did have a couple of hiccups and our tour guides and our travel company immediately   dealt with the situation to our complete satisfaction.  We felt very safe and looked after during the whole trip.

We particularly enjoyed the restaurants that the company picked for us during this tour. They were all so unique and just wonderful quality food.

The hotel in Shanghai was very comfortable and had probably the best amazing breakfast.  At the hotel we stayed at in Chendu, the tour company upgraded us to a suite because our flight was delayed about 4 hours.  Fabulous hotel.  We were a little unlucky with the hotel in the Hutong area, Beijing, as it was fully booked and we ended up with two of the smallest rooms in the hotel.  We did see some of the other rooms before we left and they were much larger.  Always a challenge for Americans with lots of luggage!  However the staff were very friendly and breakfast just wonderful.

The Yangshuo hotel was good, very friendly people, great breakfast, but a room on the 5th floor with no elevator was a challenge.

The Longji hotel was amazing - how they built that high up in the mountain was a feat.  We had to leave at 6am the following morning to catch our flight.  The owners were up early and fed us breakfast at 5.30 before we left - so nice of them.  Again wonderful food.

We needed a customized trip to accommodate us in our 60’s and our kids in their 30’s and they did a wonderful job of coordinating activities to suit us all.  Their expert guides really enhanced the experience.

All in all we have to say that this travel agency's team were able to coordinate a unique memorable vacation and we would highly recommend them.  It was a vacation not to be forgotten!

China Vacation Review: Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, Yangshuo, Yangstze River Cruise, Great Wall, Terracotta Soldiers

We have just returnedfrom a wonderful three week private tour of China.  It was bookedthough this travel company who was recommended to usby Zicasso.  Our trip was based on the "The Highlights of Chinawith Mighty Yangtze River Cruise" with some modifications.  Our tripincluded the following destinations, Beijing/Xi’an/Guilin/Longsheng/Yangshuo/Chongqing/YangtzeRiver/Shanghai/Suzhou/Tongli.  Since this was a private tour we haddifferent guides and drivers for each of our destinations.  On eachoccasion the guides and drivers were always available, on time, knowledgeableand professional.  We enjoyed each of them for their own perspective andpersonality. Each and every pickup and connection, whether at the airport, train station or hotel was flawless.  The cars were clean and a recent modelyear.  Thanks to them all.

The choice of hotelswas my own so the responsibility of enjoying them was on me. I did consult withour agent.  I am happy to say that eachhotel was different and was wonderful in setting, style andcomfort. There is always going to be some language barriers but they werealways overcome by either our guides or a smile with some patience.

I requested the meals be of the more localvariety.  We wanted to enjoy the cuisine as a local would.  For themost part that request was upheld.  With so many meals being provided overthree weeks it would be impossible for all of them to be perfect.  We hadsome absolutely amazing meals on our journey.  Any meals that disappointed, there were only a few, were more than made up by the rest.  Thanks againto our agent and our guides.

We did many of theexpected tourist stops and a few off the beaten path as well.  Again allof the details were perfectly handled by our guides.  We were notdisappointed at any of our stops.  It is easy to get a bit museumed out, soto speak, but we were able to adjust as this was a private tour.

I want to add a fewwords about our agent.  He and I worked very closely before andduring this trip.  He always made himself available for consultationbefore the trip and was in constant contact during the trip.  Our agent and hiswhole team made our stay both enjoyable and relaxed.  To my mind I havemade a friend in this agent.  Thank you again.

One final word about the Chinese people we met along the way.  They turned outto be the most friendly and accommodating people we have ever met.  Withwonderful smiles and absolutely beautiful children they charmed us throughoutour stay.  Some of our fondest memories were captured in the many picturestaken by and with them all.

An amazing adventurein China to be sure!

China Tour Review: Hong Kong, Guilin to Yangshou River Cruise, Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, Taichi Lesson

Our trip with this China travel company was overall a very pleasant and memorable experience. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, friendly and pleasant to be around and all but one spoke very good English. However, I do feel that for those over 65 years old, I would recommend that you offer some alternatives to the heavy walking or climbing sites (such as Moon Hill - I would have preferred to see a cave where we did not have to walk up over 800 steps!).

The hotels were all satisfactory (not four *, more like 3*), except for the one in Guilin, which was not acceptable - and I did give them this feedback.

All in all, I was very please with this tour package and would recommend it to others.
