Our trip was really excellent. The guides in both Guilin and Beijing were friendly and knowledgeable about the area and history of China. We felt like we had a really nice balance between the city and the beautiful countryside including the Li River, the bamboo terraces, and some interesting small villages. The only reason I gave the trip 4 stars instead of 5 was because the driver in Beijing was unfriendly, would not take us where the guide needed us to go, would make us wait 45 minutes before he picked us up. He and the guide would argue every time we headed out to go somewhere. It was distressing to listen to in our vacation and put a damper on our two days in Beijing. The last day the guide had a new driver who was great.

We had the best trip and I can credit this travel company with making it all work. To be upfront, I had already a very detailed trip with specific places to visit and a tough timeline to try and fit everything in. I worked with this travel planner and he was very responsive and really did listen to what I wanted and made recommendations when I asked for his opinions.
The trip went very smoothly - places, logistics, accommodations, restaurants etc for us. It started in Beijing, went to Xian, Dunhuang, Turpan, Urumqi, Guiyang, and Zhangjiajie. The one "almost" disaster was the visit to the Mogao Caves. That was the key destination of my trip and I had selected this company since they handle many of the academic trips to places of cultural and artistic interest. When we got to Dunhuang, I learned from the guide that we were going to be visiting the caves with potentially 30 other guests in a short 1 1/2 hour trip - obviously a misunderstanding. An e-mail to our travel planner who worked with the office in Beijing and this was quickly resolved - a private tour with a wonderful knowledgeable English-speaking guide who spent hours with us personally guiding us through the caves.
The only reason that I have any hesitation about the rating (should be 4 1/2) is that one of our travelers is not Chinese-speaking and when she was on her own, there were some logistics problems with guides who did not speak English. One problem is that one does not get the next set of tickets until you get to the departure city. So it was disorienting when she was worried about making connections etc. However, everything did work out and she had a number of great guides in the cities where she was traveling alone.
I would definitely us this travel company again.

TRIP OF A LIFETIME! We're typically do-it-yourself travelers. Overall we enjoyed our times when we were on our own more than when we were with a guide. However, we did enjoy having the driver and guide for the Great Wall (Mutianyu) and the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an. Plus our guide en route from Guilin to Yangshuo arranged the amazing sunset raft trip down the Li River. Having someone meet us and return us to the airports was extremely helpful, and at the train station, it was almost essential! We chose 4-star hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong and 5-star hotels in Xi'an and Yangshuo (although the one booked for us in Yangshuo was at most a 3-star). We opted to eat meals on our own and had no trouble in any locale even though we spoke NO Chinese. Shanghai and Hong Kong were very easy to navigate on our own, and we loved that! More than anything we wanted to see how the people lived, and we felt we were able to do that better when we were on our own. The way we structured our trip, we were able to have plenty of time on our own while utilizing the guide services only where they were truly needed.
Overall the China travel agency delivered what was asked. Our hotels met our expectations except for the 3 nights in Yangshuo (as noted above). Prior to departure we did ask that the one in Shanghai be changed as they had us staying in Pudong originally. Most of the transfers/guide services were as expected. Our guide in Xi'an (David Xu) was exceptional; however, we rated our guide in Beijing (Michele) a 4 on a 10-point scale. We did not book any of the recommended "extras" and found that was best. We could book these locally when we arrived depending on weather, timing, etc.
