Costa Rica Luxury Trip Family Review: Tortuguero, Arenal & Monteverde, Mistico Park, Volcano Hike, Horseback Riding, 9-Day Tour
Our family (with two kids) just came back from a 9 day trip to Costa Rica. We flew into SJO, had a one night stay at a hotel about 1 hour outside of San Jose, and then visited Tortuguero, Arenal, and Monteverde. First of all, I want to pay the highest compliment to our travel agency. They are the most dedicated, competent, and personable travel agency we've worked with. As advertised, their service is truly 24/7. They are super attentive and responsive before and during the trip until the very end. We were originally scheduled to arrive mid day at SJO and head over to the hotel. But our departure flight got canceled last minute, so we had to scramble to rebook another flight. I sent a Whatsapp message at midnight Costa Rica time to warn them that there was a change of plan. Alex (the owner) replied to me right away to reassure me that whatever flight we could get on, they would meet us at the airport. We rebooked a flight the next day that arrived at 1:30am. Alex and her daughter, along with the driver, showed up to greet us, with a gift bag and delightful energy that immediately made us feel not only welcomed, but at ease that we were in trusted hands. They were able to quickly rearrange logistics for the first day including various transportations and tours. So we didn't miss anything, and we did get to enjoy the hotel for half a day as well. What felt like a crisis was expertly dealt with by Alex and team. While we were in Arenal, I inquired about an activity that was not originally on the itinerary. I did not expect them to put together anything for us since it's quite late. But within an hour or so, Alex proposed a private adventure package with all logistics confirmed at a very reasonable price. I was very impressed and gladly took up the offer. Our trip involved quite a bit of logistics (land/water transportation plus guided adventures), and everything went flawlessly. I know how much work went in behind the scenes to deliver that kind of perfection. It's also apparent to me that the agency picks the best partners (drivers, guides). They are all very knowledgable and attentive. The people experience in Costa Rica is equally, if not more, memorable than the natural beauty. Now about the trip itself... we used private transportations and tours throughout the trip. It costs more but is definitely worth it in my opinion. It gave us all kinds of flexibility that allowed us to have a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Of the three places (Tortuguero, Arenal and Monteverde), we enjoyed Tortuguero the most. It is a remote area with very little tourist traffic. The tropical jungle is prestine and exotic. We had a terrific guide who took us to less traveled canals and spotted so many animals. The kids especially had a fantastic time and learned so much. We spent 2 days there which feels pretty reasonable. After that we spent four nights in Arenal. We did the hanging bridge walk at Mistico Park, volcano hike at the Arenal 1968 trail, horseback riding, and an evening at a family-owned ecofarm. We enjoyed everything. We weren't able to see the tip of the Arenal volcano the whole time because of the cloud. The best view we had of the volcano was actually on our way to Monteverde traversing lake Arenal. The drive to Monteverde from Arenal was bumpy (unpaved road for the most part) but beautiful. It's a charming mountain town. We did a nightwalk in the forest and then a hike in the Monteverde National Park. The nightwalk was interesting to me but the kids were a bit disappointed because we only saw some birds and insects. One of them got scared of the dark. The guide was terrific BTW. The cloud forest was beautiful and full of life. It was mostly clear on that day and we didn't see the iconic cloud-covered forest. One of the kids got stomachache and we had to cut it short...Overall we experienced three very different natural environments. We spent a lot of time on the road and in the water. It offered another way of seeing extensive part of the country. It's beautiful everywhere and the people are genuinly nice and welcoming.

Costa Rica Vacation Review: Luxury Family Trip, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Sloth Walking Tour, Canyoneering
Costa Rica is the place to go now!  Just returned from a first-time visit to this great destination.  The key measurement for our family is: will we go back again?...and the answer is a resounding yes.We stayed for eight days.  This is a good time frame, but a couple of extra days would have been good to add.  We flew into San Jose and was greeted by our travel planner and his wonderful wife, then introduced to a long-time company driver who drove us the 3 hours to Arenal Volcano area.  Didn't seem that long, especially since we stopped for lunch along the way.Our stay at the hotel in Arenal was the best hotel that we have been to in Central/South America.  The view of the volcano in the morning was picturesque (search up Arenal Volcano pics, and that is literally what you saw when you woke up).  The hot springs-fed pools were a welcome relaxation each evening.  We did several activities in the area and these were the best of our Costa Rica visit...see details below. After three nights in Arenal, we headed across the lake to meet our ride to Monteverde.  More of a local road trip through the hills.  Adding the lake portion not only broke up the drive, but it also saved a little time overall.  Monteverde has a cooler climate, so bring a light jacket or sweater.  A nice place to visit if you have a couple of free days, otherwise I would say spend the time in Arenal and/or Manuel Antonio.Another couple of hour drive to Manuel Antonio.  Did stop for zip lining at Los Suenos.  Another recommended item to break-up the drive.  Manuel Antonio was smaller and more quaint of a beach town than I expected.  The larger town is Quepos, about  5-6 miles away.  Here is another part where I wish we had a extra day to hang out at the beach and explore the local shops and establishments.Overall, the people of Costa Rica were friendly and welcoming.  Felt safer than any US city.  Never had a problem communicating...most locals spoke pretty good English.  Food was fine, but nothing especially memorable...in fact, the best food was the local casado (look up on youtube).  Can say that everything tasted fresh...from farm to table. Most important tip/recommendation: Go Now!  The crowds were non-existent since post-pandemic travel is just now starting to gear up.  Highly recommend you get to Costa Rica before it gets re-discovered.  It's such a great place that I am convinced it will soon be the go-to Latin American destination. Finally, use this travel company.  Since it was our first time and didn't know the lay of the land, our travel planner was very helpful during the course of our several Zoom calls and answered all of our questions.  The itinerary went smoothly and really appreciated another planner checking in with us along the way, just wanting to make sure we were taken great care of...which we were. Can't wait to get back again to Costa Rica.

Luxury Costa Rica Trip Review: San Jose, La Paz Waterfall, Tortuguero, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Zip Lining, Rappelling, Hiking
We had such a fantastic vacation with this travel agency. They went above and beyond for every step of the journey and truly made this a trip of a lifetime for us.From the first time I spoke with Alex, he was a pleasure to talk to. He explained our different options and helped us plan an amazing itinerary. When we arrived in Costa Rica, he met us at the airport with a smile and a gift! We arrived in the midst of a tropical storm and the Costa Rican government shut down the National Parks for a day so we could not go to Tortuguero as planned. Alex was able to change our itinerary so we went a day later to Tortuguero and we spent the extra day outside of San Jose at La Paz Waterfall area and loved the day. Our driver was such a pleasure to be with! He was funny and engaging and shared so much great information about the country and the wildlife we saw. We all enjoyed his company so much that we requested him as our driver on future transfers between cities. My kids adored him and he educated us on the Costa Rican culture, pointed out several troops of monkeys on drives and pointed out and explained various agricultural sites along the way. He added so much to our private transfers and drives and we were so lucky to have him as our wonderful guide. All of the hotels and resorts we stayed at on our 2 week vacation were excellent, and a couple of them far exceeded my expectations... they were truly amazing and luxurious. The accommodation in Arenal was a phenomenal resort... the hot springs there were absolutely gorgeous.... dozens of natural hot springs pools, complete with waterfalls and rainforest gardens, it was truly a paradise and we enjoyed our afternoons and free day there immensely. Their breakfast buffet was over the top impressive with dozens of fresh, delicious choices of both hot and cold options and fresh fruits. Our private guides that our travel agency set up for us in each location were truly experts in their fields. Our guide in Tortuguero is an ornithologist and a wealth of knowledge about the local birds and animals. He found so many animals and local wildlife that we would have never seen without his well trained eye.In Monteverde Cloud forest, our guide was also amazing. He was also an expert in the wildlife and local birds and he found so many rare and beautiful things he pointed out to us. We saw a Quetzal, snakes, a porcupine, several species of birds (including a baby Toucan!), lots of bugs and night creatures and many other great animals. We would never have seen these creatures without his expertise. We enjoyed many adventures on our trip including Zip Lining, Rappelling/canyoneering, Nature Walks, Hanging bridges, ATV's, hikes, and more. All of the adventures included pickup at our hotel so we didn't have to worry about transportation.  Everything was professional and well run. The food was wonderful throughout the country and people were friendly. Our travel agency checked in with us often via WhatsApp and text and answered every question we had. We needed to move some adventures around and they arranged for that quickly and their communication was amazing. When we left, Alex and his wife met us at the airport again. We had such fantastic time experiencing Costa Rica and I recommend this travel company so highly. They are so well connected and truly plan an amazing trip.

Travel Review: Costa Rica Family Vacation, Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio National Park, Snorkeling, Kayaking, Catamaran Tour

I would highly recommend booking your Costa Rica vacation with this travel company for a stress-free holiday.  We used Zicasso before for a Peruvian trip last year and we were very pleased with the US agent (we are Canadian) who linked us up with the Peru tour company for our trip.  This time, this company and one other Costa Rican agent quickly got back to us with great itineraries.  In the end, we ended up going with this company, eventhough they were slightly more expensive (might not have been an apples to apples comparison- it was difficult to assess) because we were impressed that they called us in Canada very soon after writing us back.  We also noticed other traveller good reviews and we would agree!   One of the owners, President and CEO, met us at the airport at 1:30am when we arrived, along with the driver and another lady from the agency.  That was reassuring in a new country!  We had also accidentally overpaid our trip and the owner had our money in cash, as they had promised!  They presented us with a day-by-day itinerary, which they had also sent us by email a few days prior.  Everything was very organized and they gave us a nice little welcome gift!

We were travelling with our 14 year old daughter and we all really enjoyed the trip.  Each day of our 10 day trip we did one activity, which typically lasted 1 1/2hours to half a day- which was perfect!  We did quite a few hike/walking tours, sea kayaking, catamaran, zip lining, and a coffee/sugar cane/chocolate tour.  We travelled the 3 main areas, spending a few days at each, Arenal (the volcano), Monteverde (cloud forest) and Manuel Antonio park area (Pacific ocean and beach).  I would recommend all three areas if you can fit them in.  Our best experience of the trip was a night walk in Monteverde, where we saw 3 moving sloths (we were quite lucky with this many sightings!), viper snake, sleeping parrots, leaf cutter ants, scorpion and other local creatures.  So great and exciting- would highly recommend!  The hotel we stayed at in Manuel Antonio was fantastic - high-end but totally worth it with gorgeous pools, monkey trial on premises, monkeys and a sloth (some people we ran into on excursions hadn't see ANY sloths whereas we had our own at the hotel!) and access to a private beach.

Costa Rica Trip Review: Tortuguero, Monteverde, Manual Antonio National Park, Wildlife, Waterfalls, Zip Lining, Nature, 14-Day Tour
This travel agency was fabulous. We would use them again in a heartbeat! They were with us every step of the way from designing our trip to checking in with us periodically during the trip to make sure everything was going okay.  The drivers they picked were top notch. They were so friendly and helpful. The tours they picked for us as well as the Tour Guides were excellent. I think the travel company made the most of our visit to Costa Rica. We were greeted at the airport by Francisco and taken to a beautiful hotel in San Jose. We were then flown by small plane to Tortuguero.  We were then met by our guide and his boat! He was fantastic and showed us everything from birds, sloths to crocodiles. We were personally picked up by our guide for every one of our boat tours - so much fun. We stayed at lodge in Tortuguero which had great food, great pool and fabulous staff.  It was just a wonderful lodge.  We then went to the hotel in Arenal which was beautiful.  It had breakfast included every morning and two pools - one heated by hot springs! We went on several tours and the guides were informative, very friendly and prompt. We had guides for the Sloth Tour, for the Bridges and for the Cave tour. Can’t sing their praises loud enough. We then travelled by car to Monteverde with our driver. How lucky could we get. He took us for our night walk  as well as a Cloud Forest Reserve walk. Great guy. So knowledgeable and personable. Another guide took us on a treetop walk and was super. We stayed at a lodge in Monteverde. View was spectacular, breakfast great and the people were so helpful. The birds and jungles were fantastic!  We then traveled to hotel near the Manual Antonio National Park.  What a hotel!  Everything about it was top notch.  On our way to the hotel we stopped to Zip Line at Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park. It was one of the highlights! What a grand time. Our guides were fantastic. We felt totally safe and it was very exhilarating.  The guys were so happy and fun to be around. The next day we went on a full day waterfall tour. We had our guides and we had them all to ourselves. It was a blast. Jumping off of cliffs, sliding down chutes and just seeing the beautiful waterfalls. Lunch was included and was marvelous. Efrain was our driver and boy could he drive! The next day we went to the Manuel Antonio National Park. Lovely. Our final tour was a night tour which was very enjoyable. Our guide was so knowledgeable. What a trip of a lifetime. We want to go back!

Costa Rica Luxury Vacation Review: Monteverde, Tortuguero, Flora & Fauna, Wildlife, the People
We had a great trip and really enjoyed our time in Costa Rica. Everyone was kind and helpful. The guides were without exception terrific -- always well-informed and engaging. The drivers were courteous and helpful. The food was almost uniformly of high quality and tasty. The hotels and lodges were, while of differing quality, always clean and comfortable. The adults only hotel at the Arenal volcano was absolutely gorgeous, both grounds and villas. It has to be one of the loveliest places we've ever stayed. We also very much enjoyed the Lodge in Tortuguero and the luxury hotel in Monteverde. The food in the restaurants at all three places was very good, fairly priced (for hotel restaurants), and the service was great. The place we stayed in San Jose the night we arrived and the night before we departed was very nice as wellnear Jaco was OK, but of much lower quality than other places we stayed.  Its decor is pretty dated and our suite was so poorly lit that it was difficult to read at night.  The people at the front desk weren't very service oriented and the service in the restaurant was so so. So we would put it at the bottom of the list of places we stayed -- fantastic views, but not the kind of investment in customer care as the other places we stayed. Our travel planner, of this travel company was wonderful to work with. We were particular grateful for her accessibility and quick responses to questions and a few itinerary changes that we made during the trip itself. We wish you every success!

I should add that Costa Rica is beautiful. Its a lovely country with astounding wildlife and plants, and warm, friendly people.
