Costa Rica Nature & Wildlife Vacation: Volcano, Hot Springs, Jungle & More

Morning is filled with exotic fruits and sweet fragrances. Breakfast comes with the delights of bright yellow mango and auburn papaya. The Costa Rican coffee is rich, layered with flavor. After your meal you will be escorted to the airport for your flight to the fabulous region of Tortuguero. The area is known for its winding canals, natural beauty, and beaches popular with various species of turtles. Board a small boat and tour through the canals with your private guide. Crocodiles linger in the water and are camouflaged by fallen branches and sprawling tree roots. Chestnut-mandibled toucans perch in the canopy. After breakfast the day is yours to explore Tortuguero as you please, whether visiting Limon to experience the Caribbean culture of Costa Rica or delving deeper into the rainforest of Tortuguero National Park. The beaches are filled with soft sand framed by towering palm trees and edged by the rainforest.

In January, female turtles swarm with leatherback sea turtles, which hatch through July to October. The nests are buried under the sand past the peeling water of high tide. In the evenings the whisper of cracking turtle shells echoes just beneath the sweeping waves. A male leatherback turtle can weigh up to 1,540 pounds but after hatching they weight just over 1.5 ounces. They dig their way out of the sandy nest and push themselves along the shore. Their innate senses angle them towards the water where they dip into the tide and disappear in a perfect show of nature’s majesty.

The sounds of the river are familiar and serene in the morning light. You wake up to the pleasant and spellbinding aromas of plantains and rich coffee. After breakfast your private transfer takes you along the river and back into the developed world to reach Arenal. The closer you get to the refuge the denser the surrounding trees and the more active the wildlife. The refuge is 39 square miles and is home to endangered jaguars and ocelots. Fallen trees litter the marshy banks.

Howler monkeys sit in the treetops and lazily watch you pass by.  They can grow up to 36 inches and their tails can grow longer than the rest of their body length. They reach for high hanging berries and nuts. The males’ call explains its name as it howls through the forest canopy. Your guide points out the hard to see wildlife, from caiman to a basilisk referred to as the Jesus Christ Lizard for its ability to run on water using only its hind legs. In the afternoon you return to the gorgeous landscape of Arenal and the sweeping greenery brought by the trees and prairies.

The beauty of Tamarindo verges on the legendary. The water curls into perfect barrels along the beach and when the sun sets over the horizon it casts a golden color over the entire sky. Their plumage is pink and bright and they dip their beaks into the water in search of an aquatic meal. From a canoe you can paddle close to the mangroves and see their strong, firm branches rising from the saltwater. The trees carve the water into canals that wrap around pods of trunks and dangling leaves. Kingfisher perch around the water and wait for fish to catch their eye. Paddling through the jungle is a unique and memorable experience, from the adventure to the wildlife that surrounds you.

Listen to the waves crash against the beach in the morning. The sunlight hovers over the horizon and brings the sapphire shade back to the Pacific.
