Presidential Luxury in the Andean Highlands

Hidden amongst thousands of hectares of indigenous forest is the weekend home of the former Ecuadorian president. The Hacienda Zuleta has a 300-year history, and a rustic charm is omnipresent. Reddened tiles slope above wooden frames while broad windows overlook a landscape dappled with horses and llamas. Full of cobblestone and opulent carvings, the central courtyard could be a historic town square; natural wood fires and thick exposed beams decorate the guest rooms. For almost 100 years, this hacienda has been in presidential hands. It has entertained visiting royalty and world presidents. And now, it has opened its doors to a handful of guests.

Arrive at Quito International Airport and you'll be transferred directly to the hacienda, a two-hour journey with sweeping panoramas over the Andes. Stop for lunch en route and then meander into a private forest that's a haven for condors and spectacle bears. This isn't a hotel or a lodge. It's an exclusive escape into a property that reflects discerning presidential tastes. Every meal, every painting, every historic piece of furniture has its place, combining to create an adoring getaway from the world. All meals are included and served at your request, wine and cheese tasting takes you through the evening, and there's a wonderful sense of privacy as you settle into the Andes.

Detailed Description

Ecuador's supreme natural playground provides an idyllic base for romance and indulgence. On the mainland, Andean mountains are speckled with snow, standing above thick forests and secluded valleys. Out in the ocean, The Galapagos Islands provide an endearing sense of escapism, standing adrift amidst Pacific blue.  With these resplendent landscapes as the starting point, your Galapagos honeymoon and yacht cruise can be as active or as quiet as you wish. There's always an elegant vista from the private balcony, and a perpetual sense of exclusivity as you spend 13 days discovering the surreal highlights of Ecuador. And there's always an opportunity to indulge in once in a lifetime experiences, like swimming with sea lions, riding presidential horses, and discovering beaches that rarely receive footprints.

At the heart of this itinerary is a 6-day luxury Galapagos cruise. You travel through the remote western and central parts of the archipelago, connecting islands that showcase the evolutionary wonder of birds, reptiles, and marine creatures. There are only six other passengers on the boat, and there's lots of space, helping ensure privacy as you traverse the Pacific blue. Guided Ecuador and Galapagos Islands tours provide intimate encounters, from penguins to reef sharks, sea turtles to blue-footed boobies, and endemic reptiles to flightless cormorants. Morning and afternoon activities reveal natural history while the other hours are enjoyed lazing on the boat, with only dolphins and whales interrupting the ocean views.

You begin your honeymoon at Hacienda Zuleta, the former weekend home of two Ecuadorian presidents. Many royal visitors and foreign presidents have been entertained here over the decades, and it has only recently opened its doors to a handful of public visitors. Set on thousands of hectares of Andean valley, it provides you with an untamed outdoor playground to explore on foot or by horseback. Wooden fireplaces dominate elegant living rooms, exquisite meals are all forged from organic ingredients, and there's a serenity that every honeymoon should start with.

After the Galapagos cruise, you complete the romantic getaway with four nights at a lodge along the southern shore of Isabela Island. Even when you're doing nothing here, you feel the immersion in nature. Sea lions dot the beaches, huge seabirds soar past at sunset, and the peaks of volcanoes provide the omnipresent backdrop. So lay back, relax, and indulge in the evolutionary brilliance of the island. A private guide can customize outdoor adventures that take you walking along active volcano rims, kayaking in Pacific bays, and snorkeling with a world of pelagic giants. It's a serene culmination to the trip, offering a private space amongst a vast natural playground.

Ecuador & Galapagos Island Travel Review, Luxury Anniversary Trip, Santa Cruz Island, Sombrero Chino & Bartolome Islands, Quito
We traveled to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a 10-day adventure planned and arranged in cooperation with the travel designer and this travel agency, and we had some of the best times of our lives on this trip.We spent several days in Quito, including a fantastic day trip to Cotopaxi National Park, and wewere six days cruising the Galapagos islands, including an extended 2-day stay on the island of Santa Cruz based at the magnificent secluded hotel. Our guide in Quito was just fantastic; warm, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and incredibly reliable. We saw and learned things we would never have experienced on our own, and an additional bonus was being greeted by a travel agency representative at the Quito Airport, who escorted us through customs in minutes! The cruise our travel designer arranged for us on the Santa Cruz ship was wonderful; great boat, great staff and a great group of naturalists guiding us around the islands. Our additional stay on Santa Cruz Island included a fantastic day trip to Bartolome and China Hat islands on a beautiful yacht, and a visit to a huge lava cave that was right on our hotel property! On the way back to Quito from the Galapagos, our guide drove us to a music store so that we could purchase a Churango, a plucked-string instrument popular in Ecuador and Bolivia, that my husband fell in love with while we were partying to the music of a local Cumbia band on the ship. That was special service, indeed. We can't say enough good things about the travel designer and his crew at this agency; this is the only company you want to deal with if you're planning a trip to the Galapagos. It's a true VIP experience, and one you'll never forget!!!!!

Galapagos / Ecuador Trip Review: Ziplining, Waterfall Rappelling, River Rafting, Yachting, Snorkeling, Nine-Day Tour
We just completed a nine-day trip through Zicasso’s tour company. Our trip included Mindo, Ecuador, and the Galapagos islands (Santa Cruz, with excursions to other islands). We were extremely pleased with this travel company. Before and during the trip, my questions and concerns were very quickly answered via WhatsApp. We had fantastic English-speaking guides. One was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Travel Agent Review: Luxury Galapagos / Ecuador Trip, Quito, Santa Cruz Island, Charter Boat Tour

Wonderful trip!! We flew into Quito spent 2 nights then we flew to San Cristoble and went on board the boat we chartered for 5 days. For 5 days we explored many of the Galapagos islands. We then arrived on Santa Cruz Island and spent 3 nights there. We flew back to Quito for 2 days and from there we returned home. Our trip planner was absolutely great, she kept me informed of any changes, called to check on us during our trip and made the whole process a breeze! The hotels she booked were perfect. Our guides were very knowledgeable and engaging, they were very sweet and accommodating, went out of their way to make sure we were happy and comfortable. Our excursions were the best! I can not say one bad thing or I would not change any of it, it was a perfect trip!

Galapagos / Ecuador Tour Review: Quito, Baltra Island, Puerto Ayora, Bartolome Island, Wildlife, Snorkeling, One-Week Trip

The Quito tour was very nice. Hotels in Quito and Galapagos (Puerto Ayora) were excellent.

After Quito, it went downhill. I was never given any contact information of the company there or the names of the tour guides. I had no idea of where I was having dinner each night (I thought it was at the hotel but the tour guide on the 1st day told me I was not eating at the hotel).

I did not know that when I arrived in Baltra (Galapagos) the tour was starting right from the airport. My water bottle and swimsuit, hat were all packed in my suitcase since I thought we would stop at the hotel first. The guide did not have any water for me and I was thirsty.

I had told our agent that I get very seasick but I didn't mind boats to go from Puerto Ayora to the different islands but that I would not sit on a rocking boat while others snorkeled, I said I was ok sitting on the beach while others snorkeled.

He assured me that he checked with the tour company and they said that they would be snorkeling from shore.

I told him my main goal was to see the giant tortoises, iguanas, and blue-footed boobies.

On the 2nd day, the boat ride to Bartolome was 2 1/2 hours one way. The seas were very rough and the main thing about Bartolome was its beauty. I opted out of the tour.

Travel Review: Tour of Ecuador & The Galapagos Islands, Quito, Santa Cruz Island, Amazon, Catamaran Cruise, Wildlife Photography

We traveled to Ecuador last month, with a week in the Galapagos, 5 days in the Amazon, and several days in Quito.  Arrangements for travel were made through this travel agent who is located in Quito.  Every phase of the trip was perfect, from his help before on arrangements and planning, choosing an Amazon lodge, day guides in Quito and Santa Cruz Island, recommendations for hotels, and transfers that were always there at the proper time at  the hotels, airports and docks.  Our travel agent always responded promptly to emailed questions and issues.  He met personally with us when we arrived in Quito and went over our itinerary, and was always available by email or phone, although we really didn't have any problems to deal with.  We travel a lot and have worked with many other agencies to plan trips.  This travel company is now highest on our list and we would highly recommend their services for any travelers in Ecuador and South America.

Travel Review: Galapagos Island & Ecuador, Quito City Tour, Snorkeling, Swimming with Marine Life
Excellent city tour of Quito. Knowledgeable guide in the Galápagos Islands. Great snorkeling. Then the coronavirus caused the second half of our trip to be cancelled. Didn’t get to go to the Amazon. Couldn’t even go see the land tortoises on our last day.  At least we got out of Ecuador before they closed the border!
