Palermo - Delectable Palermo

Palermo is an amalgamation of global history, enriched by cultures from around the world, spanning over two millennia. The markets thrive and produce a warm, inviting atmosphere. The Capo Market runs along Via Porta Carini and Via Beati Paoli, filled with food stalls. The aroma of vivacious spices fills the air. Vendors call out to you with magnanimous smiles. Awnings cast shade between the buildings and create a distinct North African atmosphere on the European island. Your private transfer meets you at Falcone-Borsellino Airport upon your arrival in Sicily.

You make your way into the city center and find the heart of the city. Palm fronds rustle in the sea breeze, sweeping across the port. Your accommodation has an unobstructed view of the Mediterranean Sea. Lush trees frame your window. The quiet resort-style accommodation is located in a stunning historic palazzo. The city has an endless vibrant life teeming along the cobblestone streets. Your guide meets you at your hotel, eager to show you the historical depths of the city, along with the visible combination of cultures that have shaped the traditions of Sicily.

The Norman Palace was erected in the 9th century as an Arab castle, but was repurposed by the Normans after their invasion of Sicily in the 11th century. The stunning architecture boasts Norman characteristics; however, the details of the structure’s Arab roots are still visible. The interior holds the Cappella Palatina, a glittering chapel filled with gold mosaics. Your footsteps echo against the marble floors. The wooden honeycomb vaults are an element of the pre-Norman history of the structure.

Detailed Description

The generous portions and succulent qualities of Sicilian cuisine inspired the movement of what many believe to be authentic Italian food. Rich tomato sauces grace the plate and fresh basil garnishes the dish. Brilliant wines accompany each plate, followed by the cream filled dessert everyone desires, known as a cannolo, which is the singular of cannoli. Your 8-day Sicily culinary tour introduces you to the exciting world of Sicily’s traditional cuisine, ranging from historical influences from Arab and Norman societies and even ancient Greek civilizations to the contemporary movements encouraging local aspiring chefs. You arrive in Palermo, the capital of the province.

Your private transfer meets you at the airport and escorts you to your lavish accommodation overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. After settling in, your guide leads you on a private tour of Palermo and Monreale, where you have a firsthand look at the cultural influences present in the architecture. Your guide takes you through the bustling markets of the city in search of fresh ingredients. You continue with a private cooking course, where you learn how to make the traditional cuisine of Sicily and Palermo. Your private transfer escorts you to the seaside town of Sciacca where you settle into your resort-style accommodation.

You can bask in the hot sand on the shores of the Mediterranean or stroll through the town of Sciacca in search of local culinary treats. Next, you venture to a family-owned winery for a private culinary class and wine tasting, seeing if you can properly pair each dish with a local vintage. In the afternoon, you make your way to the ancient town of Selinunte for a private tour of the historic ruins. The following day takes you to the borders of modern Agrigento to view the remarkable ancient ruins at the Valley of the Temples before continuing to the seaside city of Taormina for a pastry tasting. Travel to the beautiful Baroque town of Noto. Tour the charming streets and sample the celebrated gelato, or Italian ice cream, of the city.

You continue to the enchanting city of Modica to tour the palaces and sample the exquisite chocolate concoctions for which the city is famous. The following day, your guide leads you along the foothills of Mount Etna to visit a winery and enjoy an incredible sampling of the vineyards enriched by the volcanic soil. On your final morning in Sicily, your private transfer escorts you to the airport where you board your flight home. There is always much more to experience in Italy. You could extend your culinary excursion with a gastronomic tour of Tuscany to contrast the diverse dishes of the regional cuisine of Italy.

Italy Trip Review: Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, 8 Nights

Our Zicasso travel specialist did a fantastic job planning our family vacation for five adults.

Each hotel was top-notch. At the villa in Taormina, the rooms were luxurious, with unbelievable views of the bay and Mount Etna from private verandas. The staff were gracious and the restaurant's breakfast buffet delicious. Lunch and dinner were top-notch. The hotel in Agrigento was modern and the grounds were exceptional. It was close to the Valley of the Temples, with amazing views of the ruins from each room and the beautiful infinity pool. The hotel in Palermo was old-fashioned luxury with up-to-date facilities and close to the old town.

Our tour guides and drivers were excellent.

My only regret is that we only had 10 days to explore Sicily as there was so much more to see!

Our agent did a yeoman's job helping us plan this trip.

Italy Tour Review: Sicily, Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, Cefalu, Mount Etna, Erice, Castelbuono, Savoca, Valley of the Greek Temples, Wine Tour, Godfather Experience, Farm Cooking Class, Cheese and Pastry Tastings, 7 Nights

Zicasso’s travel professional crafted an unforgettable Sicily trip for our group of seven. After discussing our preferences, she designed a flawless itinerary, incorporating unique experiences that became trip highlights. Her communication was exceptional, with prompt responses to our questions before the trip and daily updates for the next day's activities, including driver and guide details, which were incredibly helpful.

We stayed at superb hotels in Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, and Cefalù, each with stunning views and private tours. Sicily’s warm, hospitable people stood out compared to other European destinations. At our hotel on Via Leonardo da Vinci in Taormina, the staff greeted us warmly, setting a perfect tone. Other stops included Mount Etna, Erice, Castelbuono, and Savoca. All of these locations were great, but don't miss Castelbuono!

Two standout experiences were private meals with families. Near Erice, a chef and his family welcomed us into their sea-view home, preparing amazing Sicilian meals that felt like dining with family. In Palermo, another home chef and her husband created a similarly memorable evening, with lots of great conversation and stories.

Every driver was professional, friendly, and informative, while our guides — often archaeologists or historians — were engaging and knowledgeable.

Highlights included a welcome dinner in Taormina, a farm cooking class, two wine tours with lunch, a Mount Etna hike, a Valley of the Greek Temples tour, town and village tours, cheese and pastry tastings near Cefalù, and a farewell dinner. The Godfather tour in Savoca was special, with our guide introducing us to a local who played Apollonia’s mother, waving from her balcony.

Our travel professional's meticulous planning and personal touches made this trip extraordinary. Thanks to Zicasso for matching us with the tour company and we highly recommend them for a perfect Sicilian/Italian adventure!

Italy Vacation Review: Palermo, 10 Nights

The travel company and staff were excellent. The trip coordinators accompanied us through the trip via WhatsApp. They were terrific. The service was top-notch, including the drivers, tour guides, and accommodations.

The one thing I would change about the trip is to have longer stays in each city visited. Moving to a new hotel every two nights prevented us from really enjoying each city we visited. I would also forgo Palermo and substitute a smaller city like Noto or Agrigento. But again, the itinerary was based on my interests and time. It is not an indication of the tour company's abilities. However, it may be good for the agency to suggest longer stays to other customers. Otherwise, we had a great trip and once again, I have recommended Zicasso and the tour company to family and friends.

Thank you again for a great time!

Italy Vacation Review: Taormina, Cefalu, Palermo, Ortigia Island, Catania, Mount Etna, Cooking Class, Winery Visit, 9 Nights

I was connected with the travel company through Zicasso. What an amazing trip! Many thanks to our travel designer of the travel company!!!

Our travel designer and her expert team planned a trip to Sicily for my husband and I, my siblings, and my sister-in-law. We were six and everything about the trip was executed beautifully and with great attention to every detail.

We chose to go to Taormina, Cefalù, Palermo, and Ortigia Island, flying direct in and out of Catania. Our travel designer arranged all transfers by private van for the six of us and we never had to worry where or when we were going anywhere. She was able to make changes on the spot and accommodate our every wish.

Planning the trip was so easy, as she was available to chat with me on the weekends to answer questions and clarify details. She even made dinner reservations in every city. I cannot say enough about her willingness to be available and the choices she helped us make. From the terrific winery near Mount Etna to a drive up Etna, guided tours (we had an incredibly fabulous art historian showing us the churches of Palermo), a day at leisure on the beaches of Cefalù, and an amazing cooking class in Palermo, where we learned about and visited the markets, and made pasta and cannoli, every experience was better than the one before it.

We definitely recommend, with five stars, the travel company. Have them plan your trip to Italy! This was my first time back to Europe since 2004 and it was stellar!

I surely will use this company when I plan new trips to Italy, and Zicasso as well!

When we were trying to decide where to go, we chatted with travel partners in several European destinations. Zicasso chooses the best of the best and our experiences with each of them was exceptional!

We will be back to Zicasso when we travel to other destinations!!

Italy Vacation Review: Rome, Sicily, 23 Days

Everything worked out perfectly, from our first contact with Zicasso, through the planning process with Zicasso’s tour operator (our travel agent was the best!), and onto the trip itself.

We liked the process, the ability to work with a specialist with our wants, concerns, and needs, as well as the actual itinerary and follow-through on the ground. The concierge at each location (Rome and Sicily), as well as the use of WhatsApp, was a great thing to have. Not that we had any issues, but the availability was very comforting.

The guides used were fantastic! They were very knowledgeable and very personable. The drivers were prompt, friendly, and helpful. The accommodations picked were what we wanted, in the middle of things and perfect for our needs. I would just add that explaining the differences within the accommodations on room types would have been helpful. I would have probably gone with a bigger room in Ortigia if we'd been aware of the differences. We did know European rooms were smaller than what we're used to here in the States, but there was little light in the room we had and it was very small. We loved our accommodations in Agrigento and the hotel in Taormina!!!

All in all, we can't say enough; we've been telling our friends all about Zicasso and our travel agency. We would definitely use you again.
