Savelletri – Arrive in the Rustic Charms of Puglia with the Day at Leisure
The white cliffs of the Puglian coastline glisten against the sapphire waters of the Adriatic Sea. The Norman walls of Castello Svevo were erected over the foundations of a Roman fortress, and the Norman towers contrast against the bastions and moat that were added to the structure in the 16th century while the region was under Spanish control. Cafes set out tables and chairs along the cobbled lanes of Old Town and the esplanade that overlooks the marina. In the morning, the city fills with the aroma of caramelized sugar topping fresh brioche while in the afternoon and evening, the scent of grilled calamari or marlin topped with vibrant lemon juice sweeps through the narrow lanes.
Your flight will land at Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport, where your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival. You can take your time to wander the streets of the city if you wish and enjoy the relaxed ambiance that fills the historical architecture with gatherings of students scattered around from the university. For a unique view of the city, make your way to the Basilica di San Nicola, one of the first Norman churches erected in Southern Italy. The mixture of traditional Puglian and Romanesque architecture styles offers a dramatic façade, and the 12th-century edifice contains the relics of St. Nicholas, where were brought from Turkey in the 11th century. The nave has hints of frankincense that lead into the vaulted crypt below, where the remains of St. Nicholas reside.
Move next to the splendors of your accommodation located outside the town of Savelletri. Olive groves shade the estate that offers the warmth of traditional rustic Puglia with the modern luxuries you will settle easily into. The former olive mill provides unparalleled views of the countryside, from the blossoming wildflowers to the herbaceous aroma of the olive trees. The golden sands of the hotel’s private beach glisten in the fading sunlight and welcome you to the enchanting seclusion of Puglia.

Zicasso's travel specialist asked for our interests, to which we replied history, art, food, and wine. When queried about accommodations, our preferences were that they have character and be varied. Our expectations were exceeded.
We were two couples who had a spectacular survey trip of Italy. Our agent addressed our request for history by arranging private tours with expert guides. We visited multiple eras: ancient times at the Egyptian Museum in Turin and the Colosseum in Rome; medieval times at the Medici palazzos; Byzantine times with views of the frescoes in Puglia; and modern history during a delightful food tour of Turin that featured historical cafés renowned for their political meetings and plotting.
We indulged in a smorgasbord of art and history, as it is readily available wherever you journey in Italy. The guides and drivers were knowledgeable, pointing out treasures in the palazzos, the Vatican, the public squares, cafés, the cathedrals, and churches. Food tours featured cheese, capicola and truffle tasting. Multiple types of wines and vineyards were sampled, the settings varied and the offerings enjoyed.
Accommodations could not have been better chosen. We enjoyed staying at a converted fortified monastery and a historic 16th-century palace. We appreciated the sunset over Turin from the upper deck of the hotel and enjoyed hidden privacy in Rome in our suites.
During the trip, our guide shepherded this complex trip and promptly addressed any issues that occurred (delayed trains and coordinating tour guides). Unequivocally, each tour was unique and well picked by our agent. We strongly recommend this agency to help you have a fantastic trip to Italy!

Overall, our group of nine people had an amazing experience. We visited the regions of Abruzzo and Puglia, and both are stunningly beautiful. We had an awesome "cooking-with-nonna" experience in a real trulli house in Alberobello—highly recommended!!
We stayed in some beautiful B&Bs (historic homes) and the owners/staff and breakfast spread were amazing in all of them. We saw so many beautiful medieval towns (Matera was jaw-dropping!) and had so many great, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
The only thing I'd recommend is to ensure you have a communication plan with your tour agent and private drivers. For example, when we arrived to our initial B&B in L'Aquila, it was dark/locked and no one was there. Apparently, our arrival time was not communicated to the B&B staff (which was a bit frustrating). Also, you should definitely expect to use a translation app to communicate with your private drivers and to ask drivers to communicate daily plans so everyone is on the same page. Other than a few small hiccups, the trip was great. We'd definitely use this group again.

First off, Zicasso's travel designer was on point! She answered any of our questions before the trip and during the trip.
Let me go hotel by hotel:
Our hotel in Sorrento: The people who worked there were very nice. Our room was next to where the maids had their supplies, and they would loudly chat outside our room while they got their things together for the workday. It's on us to have requested a different room. It was a minor annoyance.
Our hotel in Capri: It was so clean! The owner/manager could not have been kinder, as were all of his staff. I would recommend this to anyone!
Our hotel in Bari: It was clean, but it was too long in gritty, dirty, downtown Bari for four days.
Our hotel in Alberobello: It was so charming, so clean, and a great place!
Our hotel in Lecce: The complimentary earplugs should have been a tip-off. This historical venue is exquisite, but the parties go on till the wee hours of the morning. IT was so loud! It was impossible to sleep! Yet the front desk kept all the lights on for us when we left at 3:30 in the morning; they could not have been kinder!

Zicasso's travel agency far exceeded our expectations. We had our five-year-old and 11-year-old children with us, so the tour guides and walking needed to be kid-friendly.
Our hotel in Rome was wonderful, the location was perfect, and they had good A/C and a breakfast buffet. There were plenty of great restaurants within easy walking distance, as well as the Vatican.
Our tour guide for the Colosseum and Roman Forum was great. Pompeii was amazing. Our tour guide was basically a celebrity down there and knew exactly how to take us around the ruins without ever waiting.
Tuscany was our favorite by far. We did a cheese-making experience and lunch that was super-cool. The kids got to play with the farm animals and the owners were so attentive and interesting. We did a cooking class with a chef that was the kids' favorite thing on the entire trip. I would make a point to book this experience; the kids still talk about it and wear the aprons around the house. The resort in Tuscany was nice. We had our own private pool, plus the resort pool, and could easily walk to a small local town with some great food.
Venice was good, but probably our least favorite on the trip. You have to walk a ton, which was difficult for the kids, but it's still worth experiencing.
We travel a bunch and I would highly recommend using Zicasso's travel partner.

Our trip to Puglia was fabulous. The accommodations at each hotel were very good. The staff at the hotels in Ostuni and Bari were exceptional.
All the drivers were timely and professional.
We think our favorite town was Lecce. It was very easy to walk the town at any time of day and did not feel touristy. Our guide was amazing with her historical and architectural knowledge. We explored magnificent cathedrals and the Jewish museum.
Of course, we loved our cooking class with our chef, making pasta and focaccia at her restaurant.
The afternoon at a historic abbey was exceptional. Our guide was the most knowledgeable individual, sharing the religious aspect and its historical timeline at the farmhouse. His explanation of how frescoes were transferred and saved was impressive. Our catered lunch was perfect.
How fun was the Ape Calessino tuk-tuk ride in Ostuni? The driver was exceptional and took us everywhere, finding great photographic opportunities.
We found an authentic craftsperson in Alberobello; a small shop with a loom from 1568. The woman was a third-generation operator. We would have liked to visit the museum.
A highlight was the "masseria," making pasta, and participating in making burrata cheese. It was truly an authentic experience.
The local bread laboratory in Altamura was simply outstanding. We made bread with a master baker (87 years old), who taught us how to make delicious orecchiette pasta.
We also practiced folding the bread and sliding it into the oven. How fun is that?!
We have used Zicasso for seven trips and have never been disappointed. We were extremely pleased with the travel company.
