Rome – A Home in Rome

Rome is more than an ancient city with a bustling contemporary lifestyle; when walking along the antique streets and lavish artistry the past comes to life, immersing the family in wonderment. Your private transfer meets the family at Fiumicino Airport before escorting you to Rome’s active city-center. The beauty of the city resounds in the magnificent churches, baroque palaces, and marvelous fountains accenting the public piazzas. Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby after the family has had a chance to freshen up. Follow in the footsteps of gladiators and emperors along the cobblestone streets. The kids are as excited as you are to hear the stories about the ancient lives and lifestyles of the city.

From the façade of the Pantheon, the kids see a remarkable building that spans more than two millennia, with a dome rising nearly 138 feet above the streets of Rome. The concrete dome was erected without any supports extra supports other than the interior walls. The polished marble floor glints in the sunlight beaming through the open hole in the dome. You nearly gasp at the famous names of artists and kings engraved on tombs surrounding the former cathedral, from Renaissance painter Raphael to King Vittorio Emanuele II, the unifier of Italy. Your guide points out the hole at the center of the dome, which captivates the kids. It is the only source of light for the Pantheon’s interior.

When the emperor would arrive at the former Pagan temple at noon, the sun would shine over the doorway, bathing the emperor in light. After your introductory tour of the city, your guide leads you to a hidden gelateria outside of the bustling streets of Roman’s center. The aroma of various gelato flavors, from honeysuckle to lavender, chocolate to espresso blends in the refreshingly cool interior. Your instructor greets you with a sample of the gelatos made at the store before leading the family behind the counter to learn how to create your very own creamy and sweet desserts.

Review: Italy Family Tour, Milan, Rome, Venice, Florence, Tuscany, Vatican, Ostia Antica, Pizza Making, Perfume Class

Our Italy travel company organised a 12 day trip for us throughout Italy. When we were first looking at this trip we received various proposals from different companies based on our suggested itinerary. This company was by far the most comprehensive, best value for money and most helpful. Apart from this what definitely sealed the deal was the fact that at our first destination a package would be waiting for us that included a mobile phone. This allowed us to contact them at any time if we had any questions, to allow us to Google addresses and especially if we arrived at a destination and the pre-organised guide or driver didn’t show up. After the trip was planned I even asked them further questions about accommodation before we arrived in Italy and this was no problem for them to refer and book as well.

Now that sadly our trip is over I have nothing but praise for this company and our agent. We had other goodies waiting for us in our welcome package apart from the phone which was a lovely surprise. Our agent phoned us occasionally to see how everything was coming along and all the accommodation, transfers, drivers, tour guides and experiences were on-time and of the highest calibre. If we were organising this ourselves I would never have thought of doing something like a Perfume Masterclass in Florence.  But it was a great idea and so much fun to do. We came home with our own unique fragrance.  I had visited some of the sites before but doing them with a private, experienced guide was amazing. How many people can say they saw Ostia Antica with someone that spent 5 years doing archaeological digs there and that some of the pieces she discovered are in the Museum! Also to have a driver that will answer all your crazy questions as you go along and know the answers makes the trip so much more memorable.

Travel Review: Memorable Vacation to Italy, Florence, Tuscany, Siena, Antinori Winery Tour, Rome, Vatican Tour
Giuliana of this Italy travel company guided us every step of the way and created one of our most memorable vacations. The most impressive thing at the outset was how quickly she responded to our initial inquiry. We had never been to Italy, had not done a great deal of research, and had only a general idea of what we wanted beyond the dates (mid-May) and the cities we wanted to visit (Florence and Rome). Within a day, Giuliana submitted a detailed proposed itinerary based on a recent client request similar to ours. The proposal included various options that provided a great starting point for further discussion. She asked many questions, including our hotel preferences (small boutique, high-rise, how many stars, etc.) and suggested a number of venues that would expose us to Italy’s remarkable history and culture. The result was a vacation specifically suited to our personal tastes and interests. We spent four days in Florence and three in Rome. In Florence, we stayed at the Hotel Lungarno on the Arno River, a lovely small hotel in the heart of the city within walking distance to everything of interest, including the Uffizi and Academy museums, and the famous Duomo. It rained two nights, but we didn’t have far to go for a great dinner. The hotel restaurant was superb. One of the highlights of the Florence leg of the trip was a day tour of the Tuscany wine region that included a stopover in the historic town of Siena. We had lunch at the Osteria di Passignano, a restaurant at the Antinori vineyards where we were treated to a four course lunch and wine tasting and a tour of the winery. Fabulous. In Rome, we stayed at the Hotel Saint George. Another small, well appointed, boutique hotel, centrally located near the Tiber River, it provided access to all the essential venues, including the Vatican, Coliseum, Spanish Steps, etc. As in Florence, everything was in walking distance, including fine dining restaurants, pizzerias, espresso bars, and gelateria—and lots of places to shop. The hotel was comfortable, attractive, with a friendly and efficient staff, but we would not recommend the hotel restaurant. It was nice enough (although too brightly lit) but was virtually empty the night we were there and the food was just O.K. That wasn’t Giuliana’s fault since the hotel restaurant was not on her recommended list. We were just tired (it was our first night) and thought we’d give it a try. The hotel concierge made up for it, however, by recommending two great nearby restaurants for the remaining two nights. Neither was on Guiliana’s list, but they were terrific. A word about the logistical aspects of the trip: we viewed this as critical to the success of a customized tour with multiple venues and connections. We couldn’t have been more pleased. On arriving at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, we were greeted by Aldo who drove us to the high-speed train to Florence. After sharing an espresso with us in the station café, he made sure we got on the right train, helped us with our bags, and took us to our seats. Similar service greeted us at every connection point during the trip. Our personal tour guides, Enza (Florence), Andrea (Tuscany), and Sylvia (Rome), were exceptionally knowledgeable, personable, and fluent in English. Giuliana telephoned us at several points during the trip to confirm that we had arrived at our destination, that the drivers were on time, and that the accommodations met our expectations. Very reassuring to know she was keeping such close tabs on things. In short, all elements of transportation and personal service were impeccable. Would we visit Italy again? Without doubt. The trip simply whetted our appetites. Would we use this company? We wouldn’t consider any other service. Next time, however, we’ll make more of an effort to visit the restaurants recommended by Giuliana.

Italy & Austria Vacation Review: Tirol, Rome, Venice, Innsbruck, Walking Tour, Cable Car Ride, Castles & Villages
Our family enjoyed a fantastic, well-planned trip that started in Rome, Italy and ended in Innsbruck, Austria. The accommodations in each location were perfect for our family of five; each unique and welcoming. This travel team was accessible24/7 for any questions and to verify pick-up and meeting points for private guided tours. Our planner arranged a private 2-3 hour introductory tour upon arrival to each of our destination cities to give us a "lay of the land", identify local, non-tourist spots to eat and enjoy a drink, as well as give us the local customs related to tipping, dining, and everyday greetings/pleasantries.Additionally, the Private Guided tours in Rome, Venice, and Innsbruck were paramount since they permitted us to "skip the que" at incredible sites like The Vatican, Coliseum, Gondala rides in Venice, St. Mark's Bascillica, etc.  The lines at some of these locations were greater than 3-hours and the group tour's were massive and the patrons appeared unsatisfied were as we got detailed historical information and bypassed the waits.I would recommend this travel team for anyone looking for an incredible, tailored experience in Italy and Tirol!!

Travel Review: Italy Family Vacation, Venice, Rome, Amalfi Coast, Trivoli

I had very high expectations for this trip, especially given the cost, and I am pleased to report that the our Italy travel agency wonderfully met and exceeded everything I anticipated.

I was astonished at the polished and highly organized manner in which  all transportation and tours were conducted. The drivers were all punctual, safe and quite friendly. The hand off to the tour guides was seamless.

I felt a genuine concern from them that we would get the most out of our holiday.   It seemed obvious that they had all worked together before, knew exactly what to expect and were prepared for any possible difficulties or changes.  They helped us with translations and even worked with us and our family members during our tour of Tivoli so that we could arrange a unplanned visit with our relatives there.

The tour guides were very well educated and were able to communicate their knowledge in a very pleasant and comfortable manner.  We felt welcome to spend more time to explore at certain places if we wanted.  It was as if the tour guides were there to embellish our unique interests, rather than just informing us what we should be paying attention to.  We never got the impression that anyone was "on the clock" or that "time was running out".

The hotels were all wonderful and with one exception, the hotel staffs seemed to have been well prepared for our particular needs.  The reservations at restaurants were fine, and the restaurants even knew which hotel we were coming from and would often arrange for directions or transportation.

The mobile telephone which I was loaned to me from our agency was a fantastic idea.  It was very, very comforting to know that I could call for help if anything bad happened.  And, actually when we accidentally missed disembarking the train at the Rome-Tiburtino station, the agency's office called me within minutes to find out what happened and to re-arrange a pick up.

I really cannot complement the agency enough.  It was as if I had a family member looking after us the whole 2 weeks that we were in Italy.

I would like to especially compliment our personal drivers.  They were fabulous drivers.

Review: Luxury Italian Tour, Rome, Positano, Capri, Matera, Ripacandida, Lake Como, Milan, Venice, Florence, Culture & Ancestry

TRAVEL REVIEW - DANIEL (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA)

I recently returned to Los Angeles after 28 days in Italy.  This agent was my personal tour designer and together, we handcrafted a tour of a lifetime. My agent devoted a great deal of her time in discussing my primary interest in having a cultural Italian experience in lieu of a structured tour surrounded by tourists and intense commercialism.  I am of Italian descent and was very interested in tracing my ancestry in Southern Italy.  In preparation for this trip, I received some tutoring in the Italian Language so that I could truly experience Italian life.  The personal attention to details provided by my agent cannot be overemphasized.  She was great in handling all the arrangements to include my hotels, personal drivers, first class train reservations and private tours.

During my stay, I traveled to 9 separate cities to include Rome, Positano, Capri, Matera,  Ripacandida, Florence, Venice, Lake Como, and Milan.  I also logged in over 2,000 miles on Fast Trains, 500 miles by car and walking for miles at each destination. The Italian private drivers all spoke English, but at my request, spoke Italian.   I traveled alone and chose to sit in the front passenger seat as we drove to the various locations.  We had great conversations during these car rides.  The hotel staff that I encountered in each location was very knowledgeable and friendly.  Due to efforts and coordination provided by my agent, I never missed a single connection during this wonderful experience.

Each location was fantastic but I developed a special fondness for Matera, Ripacandida, and Lake Como.  I kept saying to myself "Mi sento piacere George Clooney "(I feel like George Clooney hahaha) as I walked the streets.

In Matera, I stayed in a Bed and Breakfast located in the Sassi (City of Stones) area.  It was truly incredible to walk and live in an area which was originally established in 300 BC.  During the visit, I learned that Matera was the film location for the Film titled "Passion of Christ".

From there, I traveled to my ancestral Village of Ripacandida currently inhabited by only 1,800 residents.  My personal tour guide and I quickly located records dating back to 1860 regarding my ancestors.  My agent took the time to call in advance of my arrival so they were prepared for my visit.  Afterwards, we were able to connect with the Former Mayor (he still runs the place) who is in the process of identifying and locating relatives in the area.

Lake Como is beautiful and quiet.  It is a very tranquil location with a family atmosphere.  It is very safe. I was very impressed of the love openly expressed by parents with their children and friends.  I was in Como on a Sunday and watched a Motorcycle Rally, High Performance Boat Racing, Marathon and Walkathon simultaneously within a few minutes of my hotel.  The Italians love speed with a couple of exceptions.

Italians are very expressive with their feelings through verbal and non-verbal communications. They are also very engaging and good hearted people.  Italy is not a rich country and the people work very hard to meet their everyday needs.

I had such great time visiting sites, eating in local out of the way restaurants, and spending time with the Italian people. The food is fresh and delicious.  The Italians know how to live wherein family and relationships are priorities.  This trip was not inexpensive, but comparatively worth the value for a personalized handcrafted tour.  The Historical Sites I visited were magnificent.  It was more meaningful to be one on one with a tour guide or in a small group.

If you decide to tour Italy your way, I would recommend the following:

1. You are a welcomed guest in Italy.  Take the time to research the culture and be respectful of their way of life.  Presentations on You Tube can be very helpful.

2. Learn to say Thank You (Grazie), Your Welcome (Prego), Please (Per Favore) and a few respectful terms in the Italian language.  These simple acts of respect go a long way

3. Travel Light, Light. Light; did I say Light.  You will burden yourself with Luggage if you do not heed this advice.  The hotel rooms are much smaller than in the United States and cannot accommodate you and a lot of luggage.  Most bathrooms are even smaller unless you are at a Five Star Hotel similar to the Mandarin Oriental.  Picture yourself showering in a phone booth.

4. If you are taking trains, go first class on the fast trains.  It is well worth the few extra dollars. You will notice that train stations are packed with people to include petty thieves.  Watch your luggage.

5. Try to avoid public transportation such as local buses which can be extremely overcrowded in the larger cities.  Rush hour can be overwhelming.  Take either a metered taxi or arrange for a private driver.

6.  The quality of WIFI internet connections is available throughout the country at various hotels, bars and restaurants.  However, some communication systems are considerably slower than others. Based on my cell phone usage, I would recommend that you rent a personal WIFI hot spot from an Italian Company during your stay. It is very affordable and reliable.

Lastly, my trip to Italy met or exceeded my expectations.  I highly recommend this agent and her company for your custom handcrafted tour of Italy.
