Palermo – Introduction to the Godfather

The voices of Fredo, Sonny, and Michael Corleone loom large in the city of Palermo. The images of the Godfather swirl around the island of Sicily. Vito Corleone fled from his family’s life on the island, searching for a better life in New York. The story has been told in various ways but none more poetic or memorable than the story of the Godfather. When your flight lands at Falcone-Borsellino Airport, your private transfer greets you at the baggage claim and helps you with your luggage.

The history of Palermo resembles that of New York City, settled by cultures from around the globe and incorporating the traditions and elements of the collective ensemble into the everyday landscape. Cobblestones pave the streets and plazas. The honey-hued exterior of the Norman Palaces gleams in the sunlight. Palm trees shade the walkways. Jovial calls rise from La Vucciria market; La Vucciria means “voices” in the local dialect, and you can hear the vendors reaching out to passersby strolling alongside the vibrant local produce.

Your private transfer escorts you to your hotel located in the heart of the old city. Imposing churches border Piazza Pretoria. The fountain crowns the edge of the square with tiered basins rippling in concentric circles. Statues of nymphs decorate the staircase, river gods reach out to the water, and tritons symbolize elements of the sea. The fountain was erected in the 16th century, adding to the glamorous history of Palermo and inviting you to witness the elements that affected the Corleone Family. Consider learning about your tour operators for Sicily, and you'll understand how they're able to craft an itinerary you can't refuse.

Detailed Description

The history of Sicily is complicated and vast, filled with the ancient ruins of Norman kings, Arab architecture, and infamous mafia dons. Your 7-day Godfather tour in the Sicily takes you along the historic route of the Cosa Nostra (Sicilian Mafia) as made famous by the Corleone family in The Godfather Trilogy. The trail begins with your arrival in Palermo. Your private transfer greets you at the airport and escorts you into the heart of the city. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the vibrant and eclectic culture of the old city.

The following morning, your guide greets you at the hotel and leads you on the first of many sensational Sicily tours, carefully observing the layers of history adorning the streets, with each detail added to the formation of the mafia in Sicily. In Monreale, you visit the Benedictine cloister and Norman cathedral. Return to Palermo to delight in a restaurant celebrated for its traditional regional cuisine, similar to what Michael Corleone’s mother Carmela would make. Next, venture to the city of Corleone in Sicily. You meet your local guide who is well versed in the history of the Cosa Nostra on the island, along with its significance around the world.

Once at the Mafia Museum, you explore the exhibits with exhilarating intrigue before continuing to the Ficuzza Royal Palace, a former hunting lodge of the King of Sicily. Next, you travel along the northern coast to visit the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Tindari, located alongside ancient Greek ruins. Continue to the coastal town of Taormina and visit the 17th-century Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca. You make your way to the towns of Savoca and Forza d’Agro, which doubled as the small town of Corleone during the filming of The Godfather series.

The quiet atmosphere, along with the famous bar at which Michael first meets Apollonia remains. The following day is at your leisure for you to enjoy the charming beaches on the Bay of Naxos or visit a winery on the hills of Mount Etna. You could also take a magnificent historical tour along the ancient streets of Syracuse. On your final day, your private transfer meets you at the hotel after breakfast and escorts you to the airport. You have faithfully retraced the history of the Corleone Family and found the meandering trails of the entire Cosa Nostra.

Luxury Italy Travel Review: Sicily, Palermo, Catania, Ortigia, Taormina, Mount Etna

Matteo provided exactly the trip we wanted, which was a 12-day tour of Sicily, starting in Palermo and ending in Catania. We spent 3 nights in most hotels and approved of his choices, which gave us different experiences of hotels in Sicily. In Taormina we stayed at Hotel Calipso, Hotel Kore in Agrigento, and A Casa Di Anna in Palermo. He provided us with a cellphone upon arrival and checked in from time to time. His English is excellent. We sometimes had problems with internet, and he would call the hotel to try to get a solution, then report back. We used two guides provided by him for specific tours, but basically did things by ourselves. I would turn to him for my next trip to Italy.

Review: Sicily 2-Week Tour, Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa, Taormina, Catania, Greek Temples, Sailing Tour, Vineyards
First & foremost, a big thank you to everyone that helped make this happen for us. Please know that the guides you recommended for us exceeded our expectations. Marilu was amazing to say the least, Claudio was cool, Frederica was an absolute doll, Salvatore was a hoot and Antonio was terrific. Please consider keeping them all on board. The hotel in Palermo was wonderful and was located perfectly. The staff was attentive and made some great restaurant recommendations. We had a lot of fun in Palermo. We wish the residents took better care of its wonderful city as the graffiti and garbage were somewhat disturbing. Thank you for not having us drive in Palermo. Our driver Paolo (Airport and to Agrigento) was a super nice young man with a magnetic personality. The tour of the Greek Temples was engaging and Claudio's format of making it a classroom session was wonderful. The town itself is somewhat sleepy but adorable and we enjoyed the food and vino. The Hotel was just okay as there was a lot of wasted space and the decor was very dated including the shower. Please consider another Hotel, perhaps closer to the center of town. The drive from Agrigento to Siracusa was mesmerizing as the countryside was gorgeous with the exception of the garbage at every rest stop. Siracusa was fantastic with something around every corner. We always found something to see and something to do in Ortiga. Two criticism's regarding Siracusa. 1. The Hotel was marginal at best, albeit the location was good. The breakfast was just okay as the wait staff was short and curt. The bed (if you can call it that) was horrible. Hard to understand why a "Couple" would be given two crappy little double beds to push together. The front desk was very nice and very helpful. 2. If you are going to advertise a luxury cruise to explore hidden coves and swim in isolated areas, please make sure the captain has a boat that is facilitated to do so. Please consider "stepping up" your game regarding this activity. Our captain was excellent with his skillset, but he did not have a dingy with a motor so we could not enjoy going to any public beach and he did not have life jackets on board and the seating was relatively uncomfortable. Frederica was absolutely wonderful with her amazing lunch and vino. We did have a great day overall but it did not live up to the adventurous aspect that we had anticipated. Please consider other vessels for this part of the itinerary.     Taormina was by far the best part of trip. No negatives here. We absolutely fell in love with Taormina and its surrounding towns (Castelmola and LetoJanni). Amazing Hotel...., etc.  Love, Love, Love Taormina!!! Catania was rich in history and food.  Overall, due to its lack of cleanliness, it wasn't our cup of tea. However, we took the liberty of spending an afternoon at the Gambino Vineyards and that was amazing.

Travel Review: Italy Tour, Sicily, Palermo, Agrigento, Catania, Ragusa, Syracuse, Modica, Chocolate Making, Olive Oil Factory
Trip was excellent.  All the arrangements made by the travel company worked flawlessly.  Although we have been traveling for more than 50 years this was the first time we have used a travel agency to both plan and arrange an overseas trip.  We were impressed with the agency because they listened to what we wanted to do and see.  There were discussions and a few iterations before the final itinerary. Take time and speak with them.  Furthermore they were able to accommodate our idiosyncrasies. We spent 10 nights in Sicily in Palermo, Agrigento, Ragusa Ibla, Siracusa and Catania.  All the hotels and B&B's were excellent and centrally located as we desired,  The drivers and guided tours were staffed with knowledgeable, professional and efficient people.  The agency kept in contact with us throughout the trip although this was not easy since we did have a mobile phone.  There were no problems at all.  Superb suggestions from the travel company that we had not thought about such as a chocolate making class in Modica, a market crawl/cooking class/lunch in Siracusa as well as a visit to a top quality olive oil production estate were some of the highlights of our trip.  The archeological visits also were magnificent. The agency even arranged for our attendance at a Bellini opera in the Teatro Bellini in Catania.  The overall trip was wonderful mostly due to the great travel arrangements.  It did not hurt that for the 10 day trip duration there was no rain, only a few rare clouds and moderate temperatures. We would not hesitate to work with this travel company again.

Travel Review: Luxury Italy Trip, Sicily, Catania, Siracusa, Taormina
Trip was well organized by the company. They were always very responsive when I had questions. The tour guides were very professional and passionate about Sicily. We had heavy rain one day (Friday) of the trip and all archaeological sites in Sicily were closed by the authorities. The company quickly readjusted the tour and flipped Sunday’s tour (Catania and Siracusa) on the rainy day which worked out beautifully.I strongly recommend this company for those thinking of going to Italy.

We had the most amazing trip, everything we wanted to see and more. This Italy travel company was friendly and accommodating and very easy to work with. They offered a wide range of suggestions to choose from and let us tailor our trip to what we wanted. All of our guides were phenomenal, the drivers always provided information as we went to help make our day trips more enjoyable. All of our hotels were excellent but the 2 favorites we stayed at were Hotel Etnea 316 in Catania and Hotel Exclusive in Agrigento. Overall our trip was amazing.
