Milan – Arrive in Milan with Introductory Tour of the Cathedral

Milan is a modern and sophisticated Italian city. It is just as rich in history and culture, and you will experience the best of both during this 8-day trip that is designed especially for seniors. The excitement will begin once the first sights of the city come into view as you land at Malpensa Airport on day one. A private transfer will lead you to your centrally located and luxurious hotel. Soon, you will be greeted by your local guide who will lead you on a private tour of Milan’s beautiful Cathedral. Commonly referred to as the Duomo di Milano, the grand church was completed over the course of centuries and is truly a spectacular sight to behold. The gorgeous exterior features an intricate Gothic design and is filled with over 3,400 statues. Once inside, you will marvel at the stunning, marble floors and be amazed at the number of intricately designed, stained-glass windows that glint in the Italian sun. The exclusive tour will then lead you to the rooftop of the Cathedral. Here is where you can get an up-close look at some of the many statues and marble spires while you look out at sweeping views of the city and feel the warmth of the shining sun. Witnessing all of this magnificent art can seemingly transport you back centuries to the time of the sculptors and artists.

After the tour for the day concludes, you can indulge in your first dinner in Milan. You will venture to a local restaurant and have Milanese risotto. The dish of creamy rice will have just the right amount of saffron flavor to absolutely delight your palate and will release an enchanting sent into the air. Travel Review: Luxury Northern Italy Vacation, Venice, Lake Garda, Lake Como, Bellagio, the Dolomites, the Alps

The trip was planned perfectly. It was exactly what we wanted. Hotels and restaurants were great. We recommend staying at the Spluga Hotel in Lake Como, Piccola Vela in Lake Garda, and Gran Duca di York in Milan. Great hotels, wonderful stay, and great locations.

Travel Review: Custom Italy Tour, Milan, Lake Como, Lake of Garda and Dolomities Private Hiking Tour, Verona, Venice, Bellagio

Guiliana of this Italy travel agency did a magnificent job of selecting locations and hotels, and had generally excellent restaurant suggestions. The 3 hotels we especially enjoyed were Hotel Il Portichetto by Lake Como, Locanda La Corte in Venice, and Opera Relais De Charme in Verona. The staff and service were great and the locations were convenient. She was hugely responsive, helping us make last minute changes, and available to help each day via email and phone (when we needed her)

Italy Vacation Review: Milan, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, Venice, Monterosso, Levanto, Vernazza

Zicasso's travel company helped us plan an amazing 10-day trip to northern Italy. We traveled to Milan, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, and departed from Venice. She booked us into wonderful four-star local hotels and curated unique experiences to make our vacation richer and memorable.

The highlights included:

The culinary walking tour in Milan with a private host who was knowledgeable about the local cuisine and Milanese history and culture.

The pesto-making class in Vernazza (Cinque Terre). We were the only ones in the class. We made pesto in the traditional way, with mortar and pestle, and sampled local wines and cheeses. Our instructor was fantastic.

The private boat trip around Lake Como for an up-close look at the amazing beauty of the lake and the opulent villas.

The walking tour in Venice with a guide who took us off the beaten path and enriched our knowledge of Venetian history and culture.

Our travel agent arranged the transfers between locations. Our drivers were on time and professional. The hotels were clean, comfortable, and every one had delicious breakfast buffets. I am in love with cappuccino!

All in all, this style of vacation cost more than I would have normally spent if I had done it all myself, but it was worth it. If I subtract the stress saved from not having to arrange transportation myself (worrying about time tables, how to get to and from train stations with luggage and kids, etc) and add in the richness that the unique experiences she arranged added to the trip, it more than made up for the cost. I also took joy in knowing she was using local vendors and hotels to support the local economy (as opposed to me booking with a bid brand just because I am familiar with them).

Review: Luxury Italian Tour, Rome, Positano, Capri, Matera, Ripacandida, Lake Como, Milan, Venice, Florence, Culture & Ancestry

TRAVEL REVIEW - DANIEL (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA)

I recently returned to Los Angeles after 28 days in Italy.  This agent was my personal tour designer and together, we handcrafted a tour of a lifetime. My agent devoted a great deal of her time in discussing my primary interest in having a cultural Italian experience in lieu of a structured tour surrounded by tourists and intense commercialism.  I am of Italian descent and was very interested in tracing my ancestry in Southern Italy.  In preparation for this trip, I received some tutoring in the Italian Language so that I could truly experience Italian life.  The personal attention to details provided by my agent cannot be overemphasized.  She was great in handling all the arrangements to include my hotels, personal drivers, first class train reservations and private tours.

During my stay, I traveled to 9 separate cities to include Rome, Positano, Capri, Matera,  Ripacandida, Florence, Venice, Lake Como, and Milan.  I also logged in over 2,000 miles on Fast Trains, 500 miles by car and walking for miles at each destination. The Italian private drivers all spoke English, but at my request, spoke Italian.   I traveled alone and chose to sit in the front passenger seat as we drove to the various locations.  We had great conversations during these car rides.  The hotel staff that I encountered in each location was very knowledgeable and friendly.  Due to efforts and coordination provided by my agent, I never missed a single connection during this wonderful experience.

Each location was fantastic but I developed a special fondness for Matera, Ripacandida, and Lake Como.  I kept saying to myself "Mi sento piacere George Clooney "(I feel like George Clooney hahaha) as I walked the streets.

In Matera, I stayed in a Bed and Breakfast located in the Sassi (City of Stones) area.  It was truly incredible to walk and live in an area which was originally established in 300 BC.  During the visit, I learned that Matera was the film location for the Film titled "Passion of Christ".

From there, I traveled to my ancestral Village of Ripacandida currently inhabited by only 1,800 residents.  My personal tour guide and I quickly located records dating back to 1860 regarding my ancestors.  My agent took the time to call in advance of my arrival so they were prepared for my visit.  Afterwards, we were able to connect with the Former Mayor (he still runs the place) who is in the process of identifying and locating relatives in the area.

Lake Como is beautiful and quiet.  It is a very tranquil location with a family atmosphere.  It is very safe. I was very impressed of the love openly expressed by parents with their children and friends.  I was in Como on a Sunday and watched a Motorcycle Rally, High Performance Boat Racing, Marathon and Walkathon simultaneously within a few minutes of my hotel.  The Italians love speed with a couple of exceptions.

Italians are very expressive with their feelings through verbal and non-verbal communications. They are also very engaging and good hearted people.  Italy is not a rich country and the people work very hard to meet their everyday needs.

I had such great time visiting sites, eating in local out of the way restaurants, and spending time with the Italian people. The food is fresh and delicious.  The Italians know how to live wherein family and relationships are priorities.  This trip was not inexpensive, but comparatively worth the value for a personalized handcrafted tour.  The Historical Sites I visited were magnificent.  It was more meaningful to be one on one with a tour guide or in a small group.

If you decide to tour Italy your way, I would recommend the following:

1. You are a welcomed guest in Italy.  Take the time to research the culture and be respectful of their way of life.  Presentations on You Tube can be very helpful.

2. Learn to say Thank You (Grazie), Your Welcome (Prego), Please (Per Favore) and a few respectful terms in the Italian language.  These simple acts of respect go a long way

3. Travel Light, Light. Light; did I say Light.  You will burden yourself with Luggage if you do not heed this advice.  The hotel rooms are much smaller than in the United States and cannot accommodate you and a lot of luggage.  Most bathrooms are even smaller unless you are at a Five Star Hotel similar to the Mandarin Oriental.  Picture yourself showering in a phone booth.

4. If you are taking trains, go first class on the fast trains.  It is well worth the few extra dollars. You will notice that train stations are packed with people to include petty thieves.  Watch your luggage.

5. Try to avoid public transportation such as local buses which can be extremely overcrowded in the larger cities.  Rush hour can be overwhelming.  Take either a metered taxi or arrange for a private driver.

6.  The quality of WIFI internet connections is available throughout the country at various hotels, bars and restaurants.  However, some communication systems are considerably slower than others. Based on my cell phone usage, I would recommend that you rent a personal WIFI hot spot from an Italian Company during your stay. It is very affordable and reliable.

Lastly, my trip to Italy met or exceeded my expectations.  I highly recommend this agent and her company for your custom handcrafted tour of Italy.

Italy Trip Review: Venice, Como, Tuscany, Florence, Rome, Bellagio, Sistine Chapel, Lake Como Boat Tour
Our custom trip through Italy was one of the most amazing travel experiences we have had. Cameron’s attention to details and knowledge of unique and incredible activities created a whirlwind tour through Venice, Como, Tuscany, Florence, Rome, and more. We had the absolute best hotels, restaurants, tour guides, ground transportation, boat tours, and more. We had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand in the Sistine Chapel alone, before any other groups, in the cool and quiet of the morning and really take-in the art, history, and feeling of it all. We had a boat tour of Lake Como where we were literally the only ones on the water and with the sunshine peaking through clouds like spotlights on the villas that lined the coast. We had a private lunch of the best northern Italian wines, cheeses, meats, and more while in Bellagio with a charismatic host who told us stories about the vineyards in the region. We had the privilege of having the center table at the fine dining restaurant located in the hills of Tuscany and enjoyed their specially prepared tasting menu. We enjoyed 5-star hotels with rooms that overlooked the Grand Canal in Venice and the Domo in Florence. Our tour guides were traveling professors from prestigious universities, art and architecture historians, and locals who had childhood friendships with museum curators that allowed us special access to restricted areas. If you are thinking about a trip to Italy, I highly recommend you contact Cameron - you will never forget your experience.
