Travel Review: Luxury Northern Italy Vacation, Venice, Lake Garda, Lake Como, Bellagio, the Dolomites, the Alps

The trip was planned perfectly. It was exactly what we wanted. Hotels and restaurants were great. We recommend staying at the Spluga Hotel in Lake Como, Piccola Vela in Lake Garda, and Gran Duca di York in Milan. Great hotels, wonderful stay, and great locations.

France & Italy Travel Review: Luxury 19-Night Tour of Aix-en-Provence, Nice, Monaco, St Tropez, Milan, Lake Como, Napoli

We used our travel specialist to plan our family vacation to Europe this year. They came highly recommended and they did not disappoint.  Our trip included six adults plus a baby with multiple flights, train rides, transfers with private drivers, and tours. In a little over two weeks, we visited the French Rivera, Milan, Lake Como, and the Amalfi coast, and numerous nearby cities. I cannot begin to appreciate the amount of detailed planning that went into pulling all of this together.

From the villa in France with our own delightful private chef to the wonderful hotel accommodations, the cities and villages that we visited, the restaurants, the incredible wine and food, the tours with local experts, and special activities that were planned for us like boat tours of Lake Como and the Amalfi coast, everything was incredible.

It was truly the trip of a lifetime. Thank you, Devaki, for an unforgettable family vacation that far exceeded our expectations and a lifetime of wonderful memories that will be easier to remember because of your surprise family photoshoot on our last day.

I highly recommend our travel specialist to anyone who wants a spectacular well-planned vacation experience.

Italy Vacation Review: Milan, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, Venice, Monterosso, Levanto, Vernazza

Zicasso's travel company helped us plan an amazing 10-day trip to northern Italy. We traveled to Milan, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, and departed from Venice. She booked us into wonderful four-star local hotels and curated unique experiences to make our vacation richer and memorable.

The highlights included:

The culinary walking tour in Milan with a private host who was knowledgeable about the local cuisine and Milanese history and culture.

The pesto-making class in Vernazza (Cinque Terre). We were the only ones in the class. We made pesto in the traditional way, with mortar and pestle, and sampled local wines and cheeses. Our instructor was fantastic.

The private boat trip around Lake Como for an up-close look at the amazing beauty of the lake and the opulent villas.

The walking tour in Venice with a guide who took us off the beaten path and enriched our knowledge of Venetian history and culture.

Our travel agent arranged the transfers between locations. Our drivers were on time and professional. The hotels were clean, comfortable, and every one had delicious breakfast buffets. I am in love with cappuccino!

All in all, this style of vacation cost more than I would have normally spent if I had done it all myself, but it was worth it. If I subtract the stress saved from not having to arrange transportation myself (worrying about time tables, how to get to and from train stations with luggage and kids, etc) and add in the richness that the unique experiences she arranged added to the trip, it more than made up for the cost. I also took joy in knowing she was using local vendors and hotels to support the local economy (as opposed to me booking with a bid brand just because I am familiar with them).

Italy & Switzerland Vacation Review: Milan, Varenna, Monforte d'Alba, Sondrio, Cheese & Wine Making, Michelin Star Dining
WOW!  This vacation far exceeded our expectations.  The travel company took our starting point, a half marathon race in the Italian Alps, and created a memorable experience.  This occurred at several levels.  First, the accommodations were all top notch.  In Milan, they had wonderful English speaking front desk staff who even found a camera charger with outlet adapter left behind.  The Milan location allowed easy walking to major attractions, dining, and shopping.  In Varenna we had a lake view room with a  balcony overlooking Lake Como, and again, attentive English speaking staff and convenient to local shopping, dining, and the ferry to Bellagio.  The same occurred in Sondrio and Monforte as well.  All guides spoke adequate to fluent English, and we enjoyed the large variety of activities, from hiking to visiting operations for cheese and wine making to dining at Michelin star restaurants. All reservations were as expected.  The drivers were all professional, courteous, and spoke some English. With regard to service during the trip, this travel company again excelled.  At a couple of times on the trip I had concerns about something upcoming (I am a control freak with a small Italian vocabulary).  The travel designer at this company had welcomed us to contact her by the an App if we had any questions or issues during the trip.  On all three occasions she responded to my text message inquires via the App, made phone calls on our behalf, and assured everything went seamlessly.  Having someone with a strong language fluency and familiarity with the region made us feel very secure.

Luxury Italy Travel Review:Bellagio, Pescallo, Lake Como, Milan, Bergamo Cathedral, Piazza Duomo, Venice, St Mark’s, Grand Canal
we had a wonderful trip -- actually by interviewing several of your companies I understood the options better. Here is our feedback on our lovely trip -- on a topic by topic basis. Delta flights -- we selected Delta because they fly direct to Milan (as they do to many secondary capitals) -- the economy seats are miserably small -- you might consider suggesting the economy upgrade to your clients -- especially the "elderly" like us! The food over from NYC to Milan was almost inedible but the food back from Venice was delicious. Delta lost our one shipped bag on the flight over and finally got it to us two days later, but when we reported it lost at the airport they already knew that it was still back in NY so they did keep track of it -- which was a comfort. Hotels -- (i) we just loved the Belvedere and its staff -- our room was lovely -- it is an uphill walk from town and so again, for your older clients that should be mentioned -- but we would go back to the hotel in a heart beat. (ii) we enjoyed the Uni Hotel in Milan -- the location was fantastic -- there is absolutely no view (and there has been none for at least a year or so -- the picture they send is quite false) -- the staff is very friendly and helpful but they should be more knowledgeable about the restaurants in the area -- -- we arrived on a Sunday -- they tried to book us for a restaurant that it turned out was closed on both Saturday and Sunday nights but they didn't realize that was why they couldn't get an answer on the phone. They then recommended another restaurant near that one as a substitute and that one was also closed on weekend nights!! We were lucky and happened to met some Americans walking in the neighborhood who were going to a restaurant they knew was open - otherwise we would have been out of luck. Lake Como meals -- we followed our Italy travel agency's advice (it also tracked the recommendations in our guide books) and thoroughly enjoyed all meals. We also recommend a place called "la Punta" where we had lunch on our arrival day -- the food is great, it is populated mainly at lunch by locals and the view is spectacular. Janene's small group water tour -- because of the tricky weather and the lack of other travelers who wanted to take the tour, Janene had to cancel on us twice -- we spoke with her through the hotel staff who knew her quite well. On the bright side, each day that she cancelled she counseled us on what we should do for sightseeing that day and gave us very good advice which we much appreciated. Transfer from Lake Como to Milan -- that was a bit difficult for us as we had both carry on bags and one shipped piece of luggage -- we definitely needed a taxi in Varenna to get to the railroad station -- we left lots of time to make sure it would work so we had a long time at the railroad station waiting for the train -- but that was lucky because we made friends with some younger travelers and without their help we are not sure we would have gotten our luggage on the train -- there were three big steps going up from the platform in and the luggage rack which extremely high to reach (again we needed help). The driver meeting us was quite accommodating and helped us to print out the Bergamo tickets -- he didn't even know how to do it but located a railroad official who helped us -- once we did it, it was easy but you had to know how to do it! We tipped him accordingly for his help. Guides in Milan -- Sara is an excellent guide -- personable and very knowledgeable and we really enjoyed being with her. Because we wanted to see Pavia as well as the Certosa she provided her colleague (another Sara!) for that day and we enjoyed being with that Sara very much -- also knowledgeable and personable. Both Saras gave of their time generously and we very much appreciated that and tipped them accordingly. Milan meals -- we did not follow up on our travel agent's suggestions as they required either a subway or taxi trip from the hotel and we like to stay local. Transfer from Milan to Venice - the driver was very helpful and the train was actually first class for a change (the other trains we took were all one class). This was fortunate because there was a train accident going the other way and we were stuck in the train for 3 additional hours! The driver met us in Mestre and all went well. It was a pleasure working with you.

Italy Travel Review: Milan, Lake Como, Florence

Overall, this trip was fantastic!! Everything was arranged for us to the point that we just had to show up and someone took care of us from there. Before departure, all of our vouchers were sent to us along with a detailed itinerary of each day and activity, down to the name of the person picking us up. If something changed, our travel agent thoughtfully texted us the new information. Yes, texted us, because we were provided with a phone that contained our itinerary and all of our vouchers along with a GPS program in case we got lost. We used the GPS a lot! If there were any issues I could easily call our agent or text him and he answered immediately, always!

All of our pick-ups were on time and in very comfortable cars with water provided. All of the drivers were extremely professional in their demeanor and appearance.

We also loved our guides in every city. I never imagined that this would be so intimate. I have only ever been in group tours where you get a headset and there are 25 or more people. There were 3 of us on this trip and it was the 3 of us with the guide. This allowed for questions and explanations that you could easily hear and understand.

The hotels, with the exception of Como, were superb with our favorite being in Florence at the Hotel Santa Maria Novella. Breakfast was always included and it was beautiful as well as delicious! I was sorry that we had booked Como. We had no activities planned there and I am not sure why so we were on our own. I also think it was the wrong time of year (March) to be going there as nothing was in bloom and there was a lot closed. Our guide in Milan told us that we could have done it as a day trip and she could have accompanied us. Oh well, this was the only piece that was not perfect, yet we still enjoyed it. It is a lovely little city on the lake. We took a water boat to Bellagio and walked around and then decided to take a local bus back. It was actually more scenic than the water boat.

The only other disconnect we had was the first day. We arrived at the hotel at 7am after a very long flight and our room was not ready. It took 3 hours to get something ready and it was not what we had booked but that was okay. In retrospect it might have been good to send us out on a city tour by car or bus to give us the big picture view and to kill time. Instead we sat in the warm lobby waiting and waiting.

As I said before, overall this was a fabulous trip. Being able to customize exactly where you want to go is invaluable. Working with our travel agent on getting our activities just right was so easy too. And being taking care of as we were was priceless!
