Detailed Description

Visitors to Japan tend to stick to the big cities and a handful of rural attractions. There is so much more, though, and in this handcrafted off the beaten track tour of Japan, you have the chance to see and experience that which few visitors have encountered.

Your 13-day journey begins in Osaka. A lively city of millions, you spend only one night here, heading off the next morning to Kurashiki, a city where the streets and canals are a testament to the city’s merchant past. In the city’s museum, learn about how the Japanese lived centuries ago. In the evening, check into your traditional inn, where new, but wonderful cuisine awaits you.

Naoshima and Inujima were once sleepy fishing villages on the Seto Inland Sea. Though men and women still cast their nets each morning, these two islands have undergone an amazing transformation in the past few years. Instead of only rice fields and harbors, visitors now find an assortment of stunning art museums and public art displays that seamlessly blend in with the natural environment. During your time here, your hotel is itself an art museum and features some of the finest French cuisine in Japan.

At Shodoshima, you may feel transported to the Mediterranean as you drive your rental car through olive orchards and along the stunning beaches and coastline. While there, view one of the deepest gorges in Japan and take side trips to neighboring islands.

From Shodoshima you travel to Takamatsu. Here, take in the local flavor by dining on freshly prepared udon noodles and taking a lesson in the Japanese tea ceremony. The following day, embark a day trip to two nearby islands that feature thousands of friendly felines and a famous Japanese fairytale about an ogre’s cave.

No journey would be complete without venturing out on one’s own. For three days, bicycle the Shimanami Kaido, a 43-mile stretch of bike paths that cross the Seto Inland Sea. Avoid the noise of car traffic as you wind your way through six small islands, each featuring dozens of stops for rest, relaxation, or enlightenment.

For those interested in a deeper immersion into nature, consider a visit to Yusuhara, a small town also known as "town above the clouds." Located in the Kochi prefecture, which has one of the highest forest coverage densities within Japan, it is an ideal location for shinrin-yoku, otherwise known as "forest bathing" or "forest therapy." This restorative movement began in Japan in the 1980s and has since become a keystone of preventive mental and physical health care as well as healing in modern Japanese medicine.

Your bicycle journey finished, your final day in Japan is spent reflecting on Japan’s past in Hiroshima and getting lost in Osaka’s bustling metropolis. This tour is perfect for couples or small groups. Due to the large number of outdoor activities, the tour is best taken in the fall or spring, when Japan’s weather is most comfortable.

Japan Tour Review: Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Nagoya, Hakone, Ryokan, Baseball, Tea Ceremony, Local Cuisine, 16 Days

Zicasso's travel specialist and her team planned an absolutely outstanding 16-day trip for me and my family. We visited Tokyo, Ghibli Park (near Nagoya), Kanazawa, Kyoto (with day trips to Nara and Osaka), and then wrapped things up with two nights at a beautiful and luxurious ryokan in Hakone.

Communication leading up to the trip was clear and efficient, and whenever we had a question during the trip, we were able to get quick answers from our travel company's rep in Japan.

I would absolutely book another trip with this company.

Japan Tour Review: Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Onsen, 17-Day Trip

Overall, it was a very good trip and we enjoyed it.

The agency did a good job coordinating transportation, activities, and guides.

They were, however, not good listeners and were ”stingy” with information.

On the first count, we made it very clear we did not want hotel rooms with futons. When we arrived on the first day in Kyoto, we were shown rooms with futons. The agency did find us appropriate accommodations for the next night, but that should not have happened.

On the second count, we asked for a list of restaurants near our hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo. We never got one, after repeated asks. We were so far into the planning that it would have been impractical to switch agencies. She did make a reservation at a restaurant in Kyoto that she raved about. It was not very good.

We were in Osaka and wanted to get an earlier train back to Kyoto. I texted the agency as to whether we could change our tickets or have to purchase new ones, and asked for the times for the earlier trains. She said we could exchange them at the station and that we could ask then about times for the earlier trains. I texted back that surely she had the train times. She then did send me the times.

Travel agents should be a fountain of information and make travel as easy and pleasant as possible.

We have used Zicasso before and it was a great trip. A number of our friends had a similar experience. Unfortunately, this tour company was a disappointing experience.

Japan Trip Review: Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Meiji Shrine, Buddhist Temple, Sushi-Making Class, Monkey Park, 9 Nights

The trip was fabulous and met all of our expectations. Zicasso's tour operator was very easy to work with and was responsive to all of my priorities for the trip. It was an excellent experience and I would definitely recommend them for a trip to Japan. The guides, our guide in Osaka and Kyoto, and our guide in Tokyo, were excellent.

Japan Tour Review: Nature, Wildlife, Rurality, Agriculture, 5 Nights

This was a five-night trip focused on nature, wildlife, rural, and agricultural places in northeastern Hokkaido. I enjoyed it very much. Zicasso's trip planner found a very good (female) guide to accompany me (traveling solo for this part of my time in Japan) through the region and I always felt safe. My trip planner was attentive to details. She was in touch with my local guide periodically.

This part of Japan is exquisitely beautiful and I hope to return to take in still more wildlife and agricultural/rural areas. I loved all of the places we visited. My favorites were Bihoro Pass and Lake Kussharo, the village of Tsurui (near Kushiro) and the wildlife observation area at Onnenai, Lake Mashū, Shiretoko, the drive from Shiretoko to Memanbetsu Airport, and the drive from Lake Akan to Shiretoko.

Japan Tour Review: Tokyo, Kyoto, Ghibli Museum, Fushimi Inari Gates, Sushi Making, Craft Workshops, Green Tea Farm, 12-Day Trip

Zicasso’s travel specialist did a fabulous job planning our 12-day trip to Japan! We took our two kids (12 and 14 years old) and worked together to come up with such an amazing and fun itinerary covering all of our interests.

In addition to seeing the sights around Tokyo and Kyoto, the travel specialist found us classes in and outside of the cities for sushi-making, Shibori fabric dyeing, and bamboo basket-making. We had the most wonderful guides, drivers, and translators take us to an organic green tea farm (an unexpected favorite!) and even managed to get tickets to the Ghibli Museum.

We had a phenomenal time and I look forward to working with this travel company again.
