We just returned from a 3 week trip to Japan and must really compliment Laura and her team at this Japan travel agency for putting together exactly what we asked for. It was our first time going to Japan - one of my biggest concerns was about the level of guided tours versus what we could do on our own. Beyond having car service for the airport at the very beginning and end of the trip, Laura had us sparingly use full day guides for our first 2 days in Tokyo, our first day in Kyoto and when we needed a translator to visit an orchid nursery that was a bit off the beaten path near Morimoto - but the rest of the time we were on our own using public transit (Japan Rail bullet trains and local trains, buses, subways, and only limited use of taxis) - and we really had no problems. Things were well marked in English most of the time and people in Japan are so polite and friendly that we often had people coming up offering to help us even when we did not need it or asked - but when we were a little lost at times, we quickly got pointed in the right direction. We moved around quite a lot and everywhere we went we felt welcomed, safe and comfortable.
We started in Tokyo in the Ginza district for a few days, then went up to Yudanaka near Nagano to see the snow monkeys in the natural hot springs in the mountains - and it was snowing in March there - but beautiful - this was our first ryokan stay and one of my favorite places - we also went to Morimoto, Takayama, Hiroshima - with a day trip to Miyajima, Kyoto for several days, Hakone near Mt Fuji (this was my only disappointment - as we were not able to see Mt Fuji itself there - but had a great time in the region anyway - and did get a glimpse of Mt Fuji earlier in the trip when not expected - while traveling outside Takayama on the train on a day trip to a nursery) - and then ended the trip back in Tokyo for a few days - we saw so many Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and lovely gardens - I really got a feel for the subtle differences among the different regions and the historical contexts.
The hotels were also top notch all around - every place we stayed seemed perfectly placed for the itineraries to make it easy for us to get around on public transit - and the accommodations were comfortable and we always had breakfast included, and those were some of the best meals we had - again, I do not think we had a bad meal for the entire trip - despite be adventurous at times and trying many things that we were not initially sure of what they were. Besides all the fresh seafood and pickled veggies, I came to love soba and buckwheat tea, various forms of tofu including the soft "yuba," soups, and the warm egg custards. Japanese meals in the ryokans are quite a production - and as entertaining as tasty - but often the simple meals - noodles and soups, are perfect and just what you want at times. My partner loved the octopus "balls" - takoyaki, and the Japanese pancakes.

This was truly an incredible trip and one that my wife and I will never forget. It was two weeks across 5 cities in Japan and I only wish it had been longer. We visited Tokyo, Hakone, Takayama, Kyoto and Osaka.
There were a couple of issues that we had with some of our guides that we addressed with our travel agency and they were very understanding and helped work through the issues and make everything right. They were top-notch in service, availability, and resolving issues to our satisfaction.
I definitely plan on using this company again in the future for another adventure.

Zicasso's travel partner was so helpful in planning our anniversary trip to Japan. Every hotel selected had a fantastic location and she made it so easy to travel from city to city. We enjoyed all of our private tours, especially the cocktail/mixology tour in Tokyo. It introduced us to so many unique cocktail bars that we would have never found on our own. Similarly, our food tour in Osaka was amazing and we got to try foods we would never have had anywhere else, including stingray! We also greatly appreciated our private day tours of Tokyo and Kyoto. It would have been harder to navigate the city without them and they were perfect for hitting the must-see highlights in each city.
We really cannot thank our agent enough for planning such a wonderful trip! The inclusion of portable WiFi and detailed maps was the icing on the cake and made everything run so seamlessly. I would 100% use them again when we return to Japan.

1. our first hotel, though having no glaring deficiencies, was still below vacation expectations. the other two other hotels were excellent. the ryokan was a wonderful experience, with two nights just about right for our group.
2. all four guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. the kyoto and toyko walking tour guides were also quite vigorous as we walked many miles on those days. the osaka guide (from the UK), not surprisingly, was the easiest to understand, so he provided more complete answers to many of our more complicated questions about japan.
3. some of the attractions the group liked best were on our "on your own" days, including the hakone open air museum, the sumo matches, the diabutsu in nara, and the fushimi inari-taisha (though that walk up the mountain is not for the faint of heart). i do not at all in comparison disparage the activities you scheduled. in particular, my family very much like the tea ceremony and the skytree.
4. one oddity was the half day we spent at disney japan. my three daughters were raised on disney and we have been to disneyworld many times, including several when they were adults. when we unexpectedly saw disneyland japan on the ride in from the airport, they insisted we make time for a visit. they loved it but this is probably not a destination for most american tourists.
5. the osaka guide was quite dismissive of the river cruise suggested in your guide, actually stating that has urged "them" (don't if that is your company or his japan employer) to remove reference to it.
6. we ended up, against your advice, going to the robot restaurant. my wife and i agree your advice was correct though the younger group thought it was at least a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
7. this was our third large group family vacation through zicasso (greece, italy, and japan) and have been more than satisfied each time. japan in particular required much more guidance for tourists, which you provided both in the written materials and in our several conversations. Because japan is so different from the US, tourists can easily be overwhelmed. We could not have enjoyed the trip (which we did immensely) without your help.
thanks again for everything.

This Japan travel agency was awesome! Our ten night itinerary in Japan was perfect for a first trip. We loved the pace and traveling independently with their assistance. The accommodations were great, well located. The guides were enthusiastic and on time. We liked having a guide for a day or evening to help navigate the big cities - Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. We also like being on our own and not in a group the rest of the time! There were many highlights, but the amazing and varied food in Japan tops the list, along with the kindness and efficiency of the people. Trains and buses were on time - almost never any wait. Super clean. Felt safe always. Overall, just a great trip and will use Zicasso and this travel agency again!
