Welcome to Kenya! Travel to the Remote Tsavo West National Park, Arriving for a Game Drive

Touch down in Nairobi, only to quickly leave the metropolis behind you. Upon clearing customs and collecting your baggage, you will depart from the city immediately with a guide, traveling east towards Tsavo West National Park. Landscapes progress from urban to farmland to volcanic as you approach this remote corner of Kenya, where your African adventure will excitedly begin! Crossing into the park, you will drive towards the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, a stunning stone-built lodge that blends seamlessly into the volcanic surroundings. This park is home to the world’s youngest volcanic range – the Chyulu Hills – and it will be a fascinating first site of exploration. Though the park does not evoke images of that quintessential African landscape, your day here will reveal some of the continent’s diversity in ecosystems and species.

You will be welcomed to Tsavo West and Kilaguni with a fresh lunch served in the open air-dining room, with Kilimanjaro looming in the distance. Take a few moments to relax and unwind poolside, or with a massage, before setting out with a guide on your first African game drive! While this park is a Big Five destination, it is most famous for its thriving hippo population, best viewed at Mzima Springs. Here, four shallow pools are connected by rushing rapids fed by the Chyulu Hills. Frozen lava ledges and jagged peaks surround the area, with a shade forest perfect for hiking. Waters here are perfectly clear, allowing you to peer beneath the surface watching as hippos bob and crocodiles swim. The pools even have an underwater viewing chamber for a better perspective on this underwater landscape. As the sun begins to sink over the serrated horizon, drive back towards the lodge arriving in time for cocktails, appetizers, and a freshly made dinner. Today will have been a long and adrenaline filled day, and you will likely be keen to retire to your luxury suite early, in preparation for the days ahead.

Detailed Description

This tour begins in the eastern corner of Kenya, amidst the planet’s newest volcano range. Explore the jagged peaks of Tsavo West and the Chyulu Hills, pausing to sit beside a bubbling spring filled with hippos and crocodiles. From here, journey into the shadow of the highest peak in Africa as you enter Amboseli National Park. With Mount Kilimanjaro acting as a picturesque backdrop for safaris, seek out close encounters with some of Africa’s largest elephants on the expansive and tranquil plains.

From Amboseli, drive into the shadow of the continent’s second highest peak: Mount Kenya. Spend a day quietly walking the forested slopes from a wooded mountain retreat. Elephants and buffalo frequently come within feet of the lodge deck, in search of salt and water at the resident watering hole. From here, descend from the highlands to the floor of the Great Rift Valley to explore the flamingo-fringed shores of Lake Nakuru. Drive along the floodplains and through the woodlands in search of one of the continent’s surviving rhino populations.

The adventure concludes on the infamous and majestic plains of the Masai Mara. The final days of this tour will be spent in pursuit of intimate wildlife encounters as you follow dusty trails across the savanna. If timed correctly, you will easily find yourself within the heart of the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world’s most remarkable natural spectacles. Carnivores often escort the two million ungulates, creating a number of thrilling and unbelievable wildlife spotting. Days amidst it all will make for the ultimate climax to this Kenyan safari vacation

Ideal Travel Months

This tour through Kenya covers a number of different parks in hopes of providing you with the best wildlife viewing opportunities possible. Wildlife is most easily seen between the months of August and November, as well as January and March, when the bush is less dense and wildlife tends to congregate around fewer watering holes.

The tour spends only a single full day in the Masai Mara, meaning that the Great Wildebeest Migration is not designed to be a focal point of the tour. If however you do wish to see this spectacle, aim to visit between the months of August and November. Be aware that crowds are highest during these months.

Luxury Africa Safari in Kenya & Tanzania Review: Amboseli National Park, Masaai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti, Ngorogoro Crate
This travel company has surpassed our expectations and provided an amazing experience we will never forget. The itinerary our trip planner provided was excellent. Typically in June (the time we went), the migration is still in the Serengeti, however this year, the migration headed to Kenya early. Our planner had booked a camp in the Western Serengeti that would have overlooked the migration, however nature is unpredictable. The camp was top rated and we still had a fantastic time there. In fact, all the accommodations we stayed at were phenomenal. They were beautiful, clean, each room had an amazing view, the staff were all very attentive, and the food was top notch.  My husband and I are well traveled, and this was by far the least stressful and worry-free trip we've taken thanks to our trip planner's meticulous planning. Aside from the flight there and one intracountry flight, the planner booked all of our transfers (both by car and plane). All we had to do was show up at the lobby of each accommodation at the time specified and everything else was taken care of. All of our drivers were exceptional as well. We spent time in Amboseli National Park, Masaai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater and unbeknownst to us, the trip planner had set up private drivers for us! Our first driver at Amboseli has over 30 years experience, he was very knowledgeable about all of the animals. Within 5 minutes of entering the national park, he took us straight away to see lion cubs! Our driver at the Masaai Mara was great as well. We told him we wanted to see a cheetah and straight away, he found one for us. We even got a chance to follow it and witness it attempt a hunt! He also was able to find a leopard (which is very hard to find) and got us front row seats to it eating its prey. Our final driver in the Serengeti customer service was impeccable. As soon as we landed he had provided us snacks and coffee all set up before we headed to the first game drive. He also made sure we were able to finish seeing the big 5 as the only thing left to see was the rhino. With our final driver, we also saw a lion hunt as well!

Kenya, Tanzania Vacation Review: Nairobi, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar

Our couple's trip to Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar was truly amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We went to Nairobi, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Zanzibar over two weeks.

Zicasso’s travel agency made it an easy and seamless experience. They communicated well, took care of us before we landed, and provided guidance on everything we needed, including what to pack.

After we landed, they met us at the airport, provided all transfers, and had their experienced drivers transport us around the country and take us on game drives. We loved our time with our guides in Kenya and Tanzania.

We were also able to visit a Maasai village and learn about their culture. It was wonderful to talk over campfires and learn about their experiences.

The service at every camp and hotel was exceptional, and whenever we had a question or issue, our agent was quickly available to triage.

We would, without hesitation, highly recommend a trip like this! Do it!

Our agent gave us the most magical trip and was able to keep it within our budget.

Kenya & Tanzania Vacation Review: Amboseli National Park, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar, Stone Town, Safari

February 2021, I submitted a request through Zicasso to plan a group trip to Kenya,Tanzania and Zanzibar for June 2022. I was matched with Maurice. This travel company has surpassed our expectations and provided an amazing experience we will never forget. The camps were top rated, and we had a fantastic time there. In fact, all the accommodations we stayed at were phenomenal. They were beautiful, clean, each room had an amazing view, the staff were very attentive, and the food was top notch. Maurice even planned a few surprises for our group along the way.

Maurice booked all of our in-country transfers (both by car and plane). All we had to do was show up at the lobby of each accommodation at the time specified and everything else was taken care of. Our drivers were exceptional as well. We spent time in Amboseli National Park, Maasai Mara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and ended on the beach of Zanzibar. Our drivers at Amboseli had many years’ experience, they were very knowledgeable about all of the animals. Within 5 minutes landing at the air strip, they took us straight to see many of the animals, especially a family of cheetahs eating their prey! Our drivers at the Maasai Mara were great as well. We told him we wanted to see a lots of lions and they didn’t disappoint. On our morning game drive, we saw lions feasting on a buffalo, we also saw a leopard with a vulture in a tree. Our drivers in the Serengeti & Ngorongoro were excellent as well, they took us to all the best locations to capture the animals. We were even able to catch a glimpse of a rhino in the distance. They did their best to ensure we were able to see the big 5 and the ugly 5. We then ended the trip visiting Zanzibar’s beaches, a spice tour & Stone Town.

I highly recommend using Maurice and this travel company for travel tours, safaris and vacations in the future and look forward to working with him again! Asante sana!

Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia & South Africa Review, Luxury Africa Safari, Nairobi, Serengeti, Cape Town, Tarangire National Park

You could not have planned the trip better. It was fantastic! Our safari driver from Rangers was great - again could not of been better. He pushed every day for us to see everything possible. Hes fun and incredibly knowledgeable and has a great command of the English language. You were right to schedule one day in Nairobi - so glad we did not change it to two days. We saw the last of the Big 5 - the black rhino in Kenya. We loved all of our accommodations and the people are so friendly, polite and helpful. We saw the Great Migration in Tanzania. We would not of changed one thing. People from other tour agencies were dissapointed that when they arrived in Kenya when we did as all of the Wildebeest had already migrated to Tanzania. What you scheduled for us was perfect. I do think that Tanzania is not well known but Kenya is to the average American like us. If it wasn't for you we would of never known about Tanzania. Tanzania has it all - except the black rhino at the Govenor's Camp- no need to even go to Kenya but I did want to go the the Elephant and Giraffe orphanages. We loved Capetown, the shark cage trip and the tour operator was wonderful. The 1/2 day Capetown trip was great. We went on the historic Capetown walking tour at 11:00 after we checked out. We added the Olduvai museum at the crater to our trip.  We had a wonderful time and saw so much in 17 days including traveling from the East Coast;  Arusha, Tarangire National park,  Ngorongoro crater, Central Serengeti - Turner Springs, Norther Serengeti - Kokatonde, Masai - Mara, Nairobi, Victoria Falls and Capetown. A trip of a lifetime.

Kenya Luxury Trip Review: Amboseli, Lewa, Maasai Mara, Safari, Culture, 12-Day Tour

From the initial email contact and telephone conversation with the Zicasso travel agent, we could sense we were in good hands. He was very responsive to our ideas about a trip to Africa and his vast knowledge of the continent was immediately evident. Based on the information provided he quickly turned around a proposed itinerary for a trip to Kenya. Ultimately, we decided on safaris in Amboseli, Lewa, and Maasai Mara. Each location was beautiful in its own unique way. The accommodations were more than comfortable and the food was excellent. The Kenyan people were beyond friendly and the wildlife viewing was amazing.

In addition, we got some sense of the local cultures and were very pleased to learn that a portion of the revenue generated by our stays in each location went to the local conservation efforts.

The logistics of the trip were seamless, starting with our arrival in Nairobi very late on a Monday night, through to our return to the Nairobi airport on the evening of our departure.

The team at the travel agency handled all of the details and enabled our family to truly experience the trip of a lifetime. We would recommend this travel agency without reservation.

Review: Africa Family Safari, Kenya, Tsavo National Park, Masai Mara

Company was great. They planned a couple of safaris for us, one in Tsavo and one in Masai Mara. Both in small, excellent lodges.  Glitches along the way were taken care of immediately by them back in Los Angeles. Beautiful trip.
