Nairobi - Drive into Samburu National Reserve

This tour through Kenya’s most famous parks begins in the capital city of Nairobi. Touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will catch your first glimpse of this fascinating country. Upon clearing customs and collecting your baggage, you will be met by a representative who will whisk you out of the city and towards the bush. Driving north out of the city, you will move through the Kikuyu tribal lands of the central province. As the landscape becomes increasingly more arid, you will know you are approaching your first destination: Samburu National Reserve.

Samburu is one of the most ideal parks for wildlife viewing, given that the landscape is composed largely of desert scrubland and distant mountains. Relative to the more southern reserves, Samburuland is seldom visited – providing you with near exclusivity in this unique landscape. Combined with the distinct Samburu and Turkana cultures, your time in Samburu will be a unique and atypical introduction to Kenya.  While here, you will likely stay at the stunning Samburu Serena hotel, or at another similar accommodation.

Arriving in the afternoon, you might enjoy spending the remainder of your day relaxing on the lodge grounds. With a spa on site, a massage may be the perfect way to unwind from all the travel. Alternatively, you may enjoy quietly relaxing with a book near the pool. However, if you are especially excited to get into the bush, it is always possible to join a late afternoon safari that will set out into the arid plains. The remainder of the day is spent entirely at your leisure. Enjoy your first bush buffet dinner with the lodge under the starry night sky, before returning sleepily to your bed.

Vacation Review: Luxury Africa Safari & Gorilla Trek, Rwanda, Kenya & Tanzania, Samburu & Maasai Mara National Reserves

Our trip to East Africa was absolutely fabulous!  This tour company took the time to hear what we wanted out of our trip and planned us a "trip of a lifetime".  They were top notch to deal with from the planning stage through to the prepping stage, and finally to the vacation itself.  Once we arrived in Nairobi everything was smooth moving throughout our entire vacation.  We travel Nairobi to Samburu National Park to Maasai Mara, to the Maswa Reserve by the southern Serengeti, and onto gorilla trekking in Rwanda.  The attention to detail was amazing. Hotels, lodges, transfers and airfare were all arranged.  Every detail was taken care of and we got to enjoy the experiences of our vacation.  Everyday of our vacation offered a new highlight.

Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia & South Africa Review, Luxury Africa Safari, Nairobi, Serengeti, Cape Town, Tarangire National Park

You could not have planned the trip better. It was fantastic! Our safari driver from Rangers was great - again could not of been better. He pushed every day for us to see everything possible. Hes fun and incredibly knowledgeable and has a great command of the English language. You were right to schedule one day in Nairobi - so glad we did not change it to two days. We saw the last of the Big 5 - the black rhino in Kenya. We loved all of our accommodations and the people are so friendly, polite and helpful. We saw the Great Migration in Tanzania. We would not of changed one thing. People from other tour agencies were dissapointed that when they arrived in Kenya when we did as all of the Wildebeest had already migrated to Tanzania. What you scheduled for us was perfect. I do think that Tanzania is not well known but Kenya is to the average American like us. If it wasn't for you we would of never known about Tanzania. Tanzania has it all - except the black rhino at the Govenor's Camp- no need to even go to Kenya but I did want to go the the Elephant and Giraffe orphanages. We loved Capetown, the shark cage trip and the tour operator was wonderful. The 1/2 day Capetown trip was great. We went on the historic Capetown walking tour at 11:00 after we checked out. We added the Olduvai museum at the crater to our trip.  We had a wonderful time and saw so much in 17 days including traveling from the East Coast;  Arusha, Tarangire National park,  Ngorongoro crater, Central Serengeti - Turner Springs, Norther Serengeti - Kokatonde, Masai - Mara, Nairobi, Victoria Falls and Capetown. A trip of a lifetime.

Kenya & Tanzania Vacation Review: Big Five, Mara River, Lake Nakuru, 9-Day Trip

The trip was great. We got to see everything we wanted to see, including the big five and the migration of large herds of wildebeests and zebras.

The travel company was extremely helpful. The pre-trip prep was very thorough, but the true test came when I lost my cell phone in Mara towards the end and then our return flight was unexpectedly canceled. So I was stranded in Nairobi with my 12-year-old, having almost no means of communication with the rest of the world, and the rebooked flight was not until five days later.

The travel agency worked with local providers and put together a three-day side trip for us to go to Lake Nakuru to see rhinos, rebooked our local transportation, and made sure a local agent would be at the airport to help us when we departed — and they made all the arrangements within a day. They helped make a really stressful situation a lot easier to deal with.

Travel Review: Luxury Africa Safari, Tanzania & Kenya

Our safari travel planner was fantastic! She provided lots of different options, told us the pros and cons of each, and enabled us to make a well informed decision to plan our trip.

As a result, we had an incredible trip. Our stay at the Saruni Samburu lodge was picturesque, romantic, and exactly as our travel planner had described. The Olare Mara Kempinski resort was in the middle of wildlife - with hippos, monkeys, and lions right outside in the evening - and the Mara overall was wetter than Samburu and had a lot more wildlife, which is why our travel planner recommended it and we were grateful for the selection.

All the travel transfers were also pre-arranged and worked perfectly to get us from place to place.

Overall, our trip to Kenya and Tanzania was the trip of a lifetime, and we're very appreciative of the package that our safari travel planner put together. Thanks!

Travel Review: Luxury Africa Safari, Kenya, Samburu National Reserve, Maasai Mara

We used this travel agency to organize a private 13 night, road-safari in Kenya this past August. We stayed at high end, mostly exclusive resorts and everything but airfare and gratuity was included in the package.

The travel agency exceeded my expectations in every way. I was a bit hesitant to book with them (via Zicasso) as they didn’t have a lot of info online in terms of reviews or chatter, but I am so glad I did. I saved literally thousands of dollars by bypassing the middle man. Apparently many of the big tour operators use outfits like this travel agency, add a 25%+ markup and then resell you the package. This was a very pricey trip so I got 4 other bids before I selected one – and many of the same resorts were included on the various itineraries, which is how I know I got a great deal.

In terms of the itinerary, Samburu was our favorite part of the trip by far (not the Maasai Mara, like I was expecting). In part this had to do with the super cool landscape and the superb hotel (Elephant Bedroom Camp) but also because of the diversity of the animals. The Mara was our second favorite, and we preferred Elewana Sand River resort over Kichwa Tembo because it was more exclusive and not so touristy. Old Pejeta was cool to see the last Northern White Rhinos but didn’t love the enclosed aspect of the conservatory (though understand that’s the point).

I’m petrified of small airplanes so my partner and I ended up doing a private driving safari. He loved the Land Cruiser as it was very durable on the rough roads and fit his 6ft 7in frame. I liked it too but it was a lot of time in the car going from park to park. My choice though given the plane issue I have. The best part of the drive was our guide. He was just great. Knowledgeable, funny, perfect English and he knew EVERYBODY. It really came in handy as he was able to get tips on sightings of elusive animals. :-) Which, BTW were amazing.

Simply put, this was an awesome trip and our agent, our guide and the travel agency team really delivered. I will for sure use them again.

Kenya Luxury Family Africa Safari Review: Walking & Horseback Safari's, Hot Air Ballon Ride, Culture, Day & Night Drives
Just returned from our first trip to Africa and decided to do a Kenyan safari to explore the wildlife and hopefully catch the great migration. We knew basically very little about Africa before our trip. The folks at Zicasso put us in touch with a travel company out of Denver, CO and specifically, our agent. Over the course of 18 months of planning, our travel agent patiently spent literally dozens of hours over a multitude of calls with me, educating me on different regions of Africa and helping me build out our trip to match the desired experiences, activity levels, and accommodation types to perfectly match, and exceed our family's expectations. Following is an email I sent her the day after return. I think it sums things up. Hi,We are back home safe and sound from our Kenya Safari and all we can say is W-O-W!  What a truly spectacular trip!  Start to finish, everything from the camps to the food to (of course) the animals continually took our breath away day after day. Your suggestions of camps for us could not have been more spot on. The variety of culture, scenery, and amazing animal adventures kept us mesmerized every single day we were there. We were able to see all the big 5 by end of our 2nd day, and many more days beyond. We did day drives, night drives, walking safaris, horse back safaris (totally surprised by a bush breakfast waiting for us after), a sunrise balloon ride, and even managed to ride some camels!  We got within feet of lions, leopards, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, rhino, and on and on. We even saw some wild dogs just after a morning kill enjoying their new breakfast. We were even lucky enough to be photographing a lion pair when then unexpectedly started mating. (told that was exceptionally rare). The highlight had to be witnessing the wildebeest crossing in Mara that still seems surreal. The local people and camp staff were unbelievably friendly and helpful beyond words, and our photos turned out so well, I can't believe it was actually us that took them!  We had baboons visit our room in Samburu, a family of Hyrex living in the trees just off our deck in Lewa and Zebra calling us each night in the Mara. Wow, wow, wow. It took us all of 48 hours to fall in love with Africa. Our daughter cried in joy at least once every day we were there. I have little doubt we will be revisiting Africa at some point in the future, but for now, I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your expertise and guidance helped us create memories that will truly last a life time.
