Review: Africa Safari, Kenya, Maasai Mara, Hot Air Balloon Ride

August 2018: We had a fantastic time with this travel agency! In a small group of three young women traveling alone, I wanted to arrange a comfortable, safe, and memorable experience for us; our travel planners delivered! I had a few ideas for locations and experiences we wanted to visit while in Kenya, and our travel planner responded with a great itinerary and adjusted it according to my (many) requests and questions. He continued to be available for questions throughout the lead-up to our trip, and met us in Nairobi at both the beginning and end of our trip to greet us in person.

The accommodations and food were all very good - tented camps are such a fun experience. I had some other website's itineraries for comparison in the planning stages, and our travel planner made it clear that the lodges he planned for us were of higher quality as well as smaller and more intimate. We enjoyed all of them; Ololo Lodge in Samburu and Serena Sweetwaters were our favorites. I think we certainly got above-average value for what we paid.

We intentionally built a busy itinerary (a lot of driving to cover a lot of parks), and it went very smoothly. Our private guide and driver for the duration of the trip was fantastic. You could tell he had many years of experience and absolutely knew his way around the entire country around all of the parks and reserves, and was very knowledgeable about all of the animals. We saw tons of wildlife from the moment we arrived; while it seemed we had some good luck it was also clear that our guide kept putting us in the right place at the right time.

Our guide was also always checking in with us about how we enjoyed the accommodations, food, and schedule and kept us informed about what would be coming up next in terms of travel time and what we would be seeing. Driving from park to park throughout the trip he also gave us information about the people who lived in different areas of the country and the most common industries - I appreciated getting to know Kenya beyond just the wildlife.

Luxury Africa Safari Review: Tanzania, Kenya, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, Kati Kati Camp, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Great Migration

Rating this safari tour operator is a little difficult as I believe that a company is only as good as their travel agents and the people they contract with in Africa.  My travel agent was the only reason I chose this company. She made the trip and itinerary come alive for me and I was "sold" the very first time I spoke with her.  Unfortunately, I have heard she is leaving this company, therefore I would have some trepidation about recommending the company.

The trip did not start out the best. When I arrived at Kilimanjaro there was no one to greet me!  Fortunately two gentlemen from another tour company assisted by calling the contract company in Africa's representative, Justin, for me.  Justin laughed and said he thought I was supposed to have arrived the day before, then had a taxi take me to my hotel in Arusha where he met me and minimized the issue with a brief apology.   Not a good way to start a journey!

Happily, the contract guide was fabulous.  He was with us the entire time we were in Tanzania and not only found game for us, but provided interesting history and facts about the animals and the country.  He was truly amazing and I would not hesitate to recommend him as a guide.  He made the time in Tanzania much more memorable.

When we flew from the Serengeti to Kenya (several take-offs/landings) we arrived at Arusha where Justin met us and drove us to Kilimanjaro (Serengeti-Arusha-Kilimanjaro-Nairobi Wilson). A very harrowing experience through traffic and nearly hitting a man on a bicycle.  We found out later we could have flown directly to Kilimanjaro, but Justin wanted time to "chat" with us before we left Tanzania!  That does not show thoughtfulness toward the traveler.

Upon arrival at Nairobi Wilson we were met by Daniel, a 'stand in' for our scheduled guide Ken.  On the way to our camp we had a short game drive with very little input from Daniel.  After the experience with our terrific guide we were not impressed with this "welcome".  However, upon meeting Ken later in the evening our hopes brightened considerably - especially since he told us he was the best guide in the Maasai Mara.  He proved to be very good and made sure we had superb game viewing.

The accommodations were wonderful:  Mt. Meru Hotel in Arusha was beautiful - with a large garden area in the back, gorgeous pool (although it was too cold for us to use), friendly & helpful staff, and I had the best Caesar salad ever!

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge (Tanzania) is a marvel.  How they got all the materials up there is a wonderment. We had quite a walk to our room (although some were farther than ours), but we managed.  The meals were all buffet and I would rate them only a "good", as I've had much better.  There was quite a variety, but there was just something missing. I'm sure others have rated their food higher - all depends on taste. The rooms were huge and hot water bottles were placed in our beds - a very nice touch since it was quite cold.  The best part of the lodge (in my opinion) was the view into the crater and watching the sunset.

Kati Kati Camp (Serengeti) was fabulous on all counts. Not luxurious, but that's not what we wanted, as we asked to be on the plains surrounded by the sounds of animals.  Our tent was large & clean with a sink, toilet and bucket shower.  Our dining tent was open and faced the plains.  It was staffed by wonderful men who looked after our every need and served the most delicious food - with a new soup each night: tomato, peanut, & cucumber - each one better than the previous.  Sitting around the campfire with our glass of wine watching the hyenas circling was something I will never forget, nor will I forget drinking coffee watching the sun rise on the Serengeti.

Sarova Mara Camp (Maasai Mara, Kenya) was like an oasis. Unless we looked at the sides of our 'room' we never would have believed we were in a tent - beautiful wood floors, marble bath and shower, mosquito netting around our beds (although it was not needed when we were there).  The grounds were beautifully kept and the facilities were exceptional. From the moment we entered the staff was there to assist and during our stay always greeted us by name no matter where we were.  The food here was also buffet and was very good - something different every night and I tried several new dishes. They had a pasta station at night and an omelet station for breakfast, along with salads, pastries, coffee and many kinds of tea.  I also had a wonderful massage the night before leaving - only $60/hour and well worth it after riding the bumpy roads in a Land Cruiser all day.  Sarova Mara would definitely be on my 'recommendation' list!

Safari Review: Luxury Kenya & Tanzania Safari, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangeri, Maasai Mara
The accommodations were wonderful as were the destinations Alana from this African safari tour operator helped us select. We really appreciated the diversity of the places we visited and stayed at: Amboselli, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangeri, and two concessions in the Maasai Mara. Each park and each camp had something special to offer. One camp had only luxury 7 tents, one had 40 raised tents . Some were in between (with 15-20 individual units). Not all accommodations were tented... as Alana selected some luxury smaller lodge type properties too. Each was different and had a unique personality which only added to the trip. Whether it was the view of Kilimanjaro, the resident warthogs, the sneaky monkeys, the elephants that visited the water hole for an evening drink, the gourmet food, the incredible service, the night game drive, the walking safari, the picnic breakfast or the Maasai spotters.. each facility and each destination was perfect.

Kenya, Tanzania Vacation Review: Nairobi, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar

Our couple's trip to Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar was truly amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We went to Nairobi, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Zanzibar over two weeks.

Zicasso’s travel agency made it an easy and seamless experience. They communicated well, took care of us before we landed, and provided guidance on everything we needed, including what to pack.

After we landed, they met us at the airport, provided all transfers, and had their experienced drivers transport us around the country and take us on game drives. We loved our time with our guides in Kenya and Tanzania.

We were also able to visit a Maasai village and learn about their culture. It was wonderful to talk over campfires and learn about their experiences.

The service at every camp and hotel was exceptional, and whenever we had a question or issue, our agent was quickly available to triage.

We would, without hesitation, highly recommend a trip like this! Do it!

Our agent gave us the most magical trip and was able to keep it within our budget.

Kenya, Zimbabwe & South Africa Luxury Tour Review: Cape Town, Nairobi, Local Cuisine, Balloon Ride, Culture, 12-Day Trip
The trip was well planned and greatly enjoyed from the first day in Nairobi, Kenya to the last day in Cape Town, South Africa. The days were full but unhurried, the food a pleasant surprise! I had no idea food at bush camps could be so varied and tasty. Each camp provided its own level of elegance and sophistication! The side trips were well thought out and planned. Never did we feel rushed or unsafe! Our guides/drivers became friends and we hated to say goodbye to each and every one. I would heartily recommend this trip to anyone who would like a good African experience! I have not a single complaint from the almost 3 weeks we spent traveling!! Thank you for a lifetime of memories!!

Luxury Kenya Africa Safari Review: Maasai Mara National Reserve, 11-Day Vacation
The trip was great. We especially liked the Masai Mara part and our stay at the Olare Mara Kempinski Tent Camp. It was outstanding . The facilities, staff, food and guide were great. We saw an amazing amount of wildlife up close. Leopards, cheetahs, lions, giraffes, hyenas....This tour company did a great job. Our travel planner did an excellent  job organizing our trip and making changes when our flight to Nairobi was cancelled and we arrived a day late. Our guide was also great. Really an outstanding job by the tour company and their staff.
