Longyearbyen – A Charming Town Surrounded by Wilderness
The adventure begins, flying north from Oslo to the Arctic. Longyearbyen awaits, a small town between fjord and forest. While the surrounding landscape feels old and untouched, Svalbard’s main town has a modern facade, with contemporary architecture draped around the waterfront. It can seem like a strange juxtaposition, the wilderness surrounding such a modern urban landscape. However, it works well for your first night in Svalbard. The adventure is just beginning to settle into the modern amenities, glimpsing the fjords and snow world that exists beyond the waterfront. Now is the time to rest and relax, for there’s so much to come once you embark on the MS Fram.

This was a customized trip to the Arctic. I specified as my 2 primary parameters that we get as far north of the Arctic Circle as possible without being scientists or in the military, and that we spend at least 3 full days in Tromso attending as many concerts as possible at Nordlysfestivalen, the North Lights Festival of international music. Our trip planner did an admirable job fulfilling both of those criteria. The trip was well planned, with the northerly part being a 3+ day stay in Longyearbyen on Svalbard, providing the outdoor and physical excitement of the trip, and obligatory time in Tromso, with too-short time in Oslo and Stockholm.

The trip was fantastic. The first part in Oslo and Bergen was a wonderful reminder of how two uniquely picturesque small cities can touch your heart. Our self-drive was spectacular and we enjoyed the freedom of movement immensely. The boat and the length of our voyage were perfect. The food was terrific and port stops were most enjoyable. Finally, Svalbard was just as I remembered it, maybe a bit bigger, but still remote and potentially harsh, but beautiful.

Our Norway experience was better than we could have imagined. We chose to visit Norway as a way to complete our "bucket-list" goal of experiencing the Northern Lights (aurora). Zicasso's travel agency helped us experience not only the aurora, but also the unique and impressive Norwegian culture and landscape.
Our accommodations were exceptional in all three of the regions we visited. We were most impressed with the cabins in Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands. The authentic red cabin right on the water was charming and peaceful; a perfect blend of historic and modern.
All of our transportation was pre-planned, safe, and dependable.
We asked the team to make dinner reservations for us in each region we visited. Our agent made excellent recommendations and the restaurants were welcoming, with delicious dining options.
The travel app was one of the best I've ever seen. It was comprehensive, with detailed daily itineraries, weather, travel documents, maps, and more. The team was responsive to all of our communications and highly accommodating.
Norway is a beautiful country, full of friendly and adventurous people!
Additional highlights of the trip included dog sledding in the beautiful Reisa National Park, sea kayaking through the fjords of Lofoten Islands, the lodge on Uloya Island (which hosts royalty, apparently!), an overnight cruise through the Arctic Circle, and, of course, the aurora lights. All of this was expertly prepared by the team at the travel agency. We could not have been happier with this trip!

This was a fantastic trip. Clearly the experience of a lifetime. Our travel planner at this tour company was most helpful with suggestions (such as delaying our departure by a month so we could have sunlight in Svalbard when we got there), readily available throughout the trip facilitating requested changes we discovered as we traveled, and smoothing the way throughout. This tour company is the first tour operator we have used (we have booked a number of trips through Zicasso) that detailed the entire trip in an app we downloaded in our phones before we left. All of the trip details (itineraries, locations for meeting guides and the times, inclusions and exclusions) were this immediately available at all times without having to refer to a pice of paper. The paper copy was provided as well, but we never referred to it, using the app constantly. The app also provided a direct message link to our travel planner which he monitored constantly so any question was answered very quickly and without the expense of international phone calls.
