Bergen – The Hanseatic Legacy

Bergen was integral to the Hanseatic trading alliance between northern Europe’s medieval powers, and evidence of this legacy continues to impact the city today. A local guide will meet you at the airport for a short transfer into central Bergen and your fjord-side hotel. Then, you can explore the narrow streets of history, passing traditional colored houses to remnants of a medieval era. From the harbor to the Hanseatic Museum, you can follow a rich tale of seafaring people and peaceful trade, passing everything from fishing boats to charming cafes. Bergen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very popular Norwegian destination.

Detailed Description

Almost all of Norway is off the beaten track. Even at famous destinations like Geirangerfjord, you will not see many other people. In such vast landscapes, you can always have a private adventure, especially when local guides know how to take you beyond the typical stops. Fjords stretch out pristine and blue, islands await exploration, and arctic waters come alive with the antics of whales and dolphins. You can hike mountains, cross fjords, marvel at glaciers, and spend many hours without seeing another soul.

Handcrafted as the ultimate off-the-beaten-track summer expedition, this luxury 10-day Norway tour will lead you to the fjords and the Arctic Circle. Featuring private tours and specialist guides, this is a journey that will show you the wild in addition to offering you all the necessary comforts that a luxury vacation entails. You can kayak with dolphins as the midnight sun creates phantasmal orange hues, swim in the Arctic Ocean at deserted island bays, and fly in a helicopter to the most remote fjords.

You will begin your tour by flying to Bergen, which is the gateway to the fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although it is a popular destination, you can still venture off the beaten path with two local guides. First, you will explore the Hanseatic legacy before hiking to Mt. Sandviken on day two. Days three and four will be an epic road trip to Fjaerland and Norddal, which will also incorporate Europe’s largest glacier and a winding trail along Geirangerfjord. On day five, you will explore from the air, crossing the fjords to Trondheim with two stops along the way. From here, you will fly to Tromso and the golden light of the Arctic in summer.

In Norway, you can do so much in a day. From Tromso, you will experience kayaking with marine life, and on Senja island, the adventure will continue on land and water. From coastal treks to sampling traditional delicacies, this large island will offer two active days in places without other visitors. By skipping the more touristic Lofoten Islands, you can travel to Andenes, which is a year-round whale-watching destination and a favorite for all nature lovers. From fjords and snowy mountains to serene beaches, the scenery here is incredible. From Andenes, you will fly back to Bergen to meet your outbound flight after ten days in places where few others venture.

Trip Review: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Estonia, Scandinavia, St. Petersburg, Bergen, Copenhagen, Trondheim, Oslo, Alesund
I am well travelled, and this was one of the absolute best trips of my life.  The travel agent and her team at this travel company spoke with me to get a good understanding of the type of trip that my wife and I (both 69 years old, in good condition) wanted to experience.  This was a month-long vacation for my wife and me throughout Scandinavia, which we had never toured before.  Although such a trip lends itself nicely to a cruise, we did not want to be part of a large group, did not want to miss experiences in the interior of the country (away from the ports), and wanted to enjoy the experience of eating all of our meals locally, rather than on a boat.  We also wanted superior accommodations, but not necessarily "luxury" where the pricing isn't worthwhile.  The travel company was fantastic about recommending terrific accommodations and upgrading in many instances.  Our hotels (and our designated rooms within the hotels) almost always were on water, which was a joy.  Arrangements were made for tour guides at the beginning of our stay in each large city (and every day while in St. Petersburg, Russia) - the tour guides were all first-rate and the amount of time with tour guides was spot on. The favorite part of our trip was driving for 8 days in Scandinavia, from Bergen to Trondheim, with fantastic stops in between.  This was completely at the suggestion of the tour company, for which we will forever be grateful.  We got to see gorgeous, pristine parts of Norway, far away from the crowds.  We went several days without even seeing a single stoplight!  The driving was relatively simple on roads in excellent condition.  We went through dozens of tunnels, saw hundreds of waterfalls, pastures, snow-capped mountains, endless fjords, etc.  A couple times, we had to stop because herds of goats were blocking the road.  We could stop at various places to hike trails in gorgeous countryside.  Our Norway hotel was an absolute dream - incredible accommodations at a hotel that has seven unique cabins, overlooking rapids, etc. There were dozens of logistical arrangements with hotels, tour guides, ferries, etc.  Every single one worked out perfectly.  Although we opted for a land trip instead of a cruise, it was balanced nicely with several boat rides of 1 - 2 hours so that we also had the experience of seeing waterfalls and countryside from the fjords, and not just from the road.  It was perfect!!!

Review: Luxury Scandinavia Tour, Norway & Sweden, Oslo, Bergen, Flam, Stockholm, Fjords, Wildlife, Fine Dining

The printed itinerary was adhered to throughout the trip, but there were no suggestions as to how to spend our free time. (From an insider's point of view.  The best restaurant, coffee shop, souvenir store, museum, what not to miss etc.). The guided tours were routine with no offbeat stops that make a great city special.  The hotels were not concierge level as requested. Stockholm hotel:  no doorman, no ramp for luggage(2 flights of steps to carry one's bags), poor lighting in the bathroom, soap dish in the shower didn't drain. Flam hotel: tiny bathroom,no tissues, no free bottled water. Bergen hotel: Room 605, the worst room( abutting the elevator which BANGED all night), late check out should have been prearranged.  Cruise Ship: superior room only assigned once we boarded? Which was not the best available, fetid bathroom smells, $5/12oz bottle of water, $4.50/cup of coffee, dinner reservations set for 5:30 every night at the same table, wine package & excursions very expensive, pull down cot for second twin bed.  Tromso hotel: perfect; good room, good view, good service.  Longyearbyen hotel: not in main building, no elevator, small bathroom.

Food:  Excellent throughout

Suggestions:   No need to arrive at airports 3 hours before departure ( check in at most took 15 minutes)

Incorporate stops in the Oslo City Tour

Pack only an overnight bag for Flam, sending luggage directly to the Bergen hotel.

With the prepaid dinners include ordering ala carte.

                         Offer excursion in Flam

Norway & Finland Travel Review: Tromso, Kilpisjarvi, Northern Lights, Reindeer Ranch, Glass Igloo, Sauna
The travel agency created a fantastic custom itinerary to Tromso, Norway and Kilpisjarvi, Finland for my husband's 50th birthday. They really listened to the type of experience we were hoping to have and planned accordingly. Tromso and Kipisjarvi were two great recommendations as they combined a bit of city with a luxury rural retreat while still offering great Northern Light viewing opportunities in both places.  In addition to great thinking, out travel agency provided excellent communication and logistics. All plans once we arrived on our trip were executed flawlessly with the partners they had made arrangements. I would highly recommend working with this company.

Norway Travel Review: Oslo, Bergen, Hiking, Scenery, 20-Day Trip

The trip was fantastic. The first part in Oslo and Bergen was a wonderful reminder of how two uniquely picturesque small cities can touch your heart. Our self-drive was spectacular and we enjoyed the freedom of movement immensely. The boat and the length of our voyage were perfect. The food was terrific and port stops were most enjoyable. Finally, Svalbard was just as I remembered it, maybe a bit bigger, but still remote and potentially harsh, but beautiful.

Sweden & Norway Travel Review: Aurland, Bergen, Oslo, Food & Walking Tour, Hiking, Waterfalls, Fjord
We had a good trip in Norway, and our stay at the hotel in Aurland was everything we hoped for. Our guide was so knowledgable, able to access our skill level in hiking, and was as good as it gets in guides. Being in Aurland, versus Flam, was more peaceful and much more authentic in being away from the tourists and experiencing Norwegian life. Our stay in Bergen was delightful, and the individual food and walking tour everything we hoped. We asked for dinner recommendations ahead of time, and Anna suggested as one of the places, Cornelius. It was an incredible experience.  The Oslo portion of the tour was also very good, with a private walking tour, as well as a private bike tour. Both guides were knowledgable and personable. We left feeling we not only had a better understanding of the city, but also the Nordic way of life.
