Day 1

Juliaca - Arrive in the Andean Highlands and Transfer to the Remarkable Cloud Forest

Your flight descends onto the Andean Highlands and the city of Juliaca. From the window, you can see the urban design spreading across the plateau and fading into the distance where Peruvian villages and popular Sunday markets thrive. Spanish Colonial churches punctuate the skyline around Plaza Bolognesi, and the aroma of grilled corn and meat roasting over an open flame drifts through the streets. Your flight lands at Inca Manco Cápac International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon your early arrival. At over 12,500 feet above sea level, the thinner atmosphere here provides an interesting introduction to the Altiplano, the high-altitude plain of the Andes.

Your guide offers you the first taste of Peru with a sample of the coca leaves the Quechua people have used for more than two millennia to help with the altitude. You chew the leaves and find a slightly bitter, but pleasant flavor and learn that you can also use the leaves to brew a popular, soothing tea. Your scenic drive takes you out of Juliaca, passing the Andean pasture where herds of alpaca graze on farmland. You ascend the mountain pass at nearly 15,000 feet above sea level, stopping along the way to view the vicunas in their natural habitat. The wild vicuna is a relative of the llama, and they live in groups consisting of a single male and up to 50 females. The territorial male protects his herd, keeping a keen eye on you as you return to the car to continue your journey down the mountain pass.

The cold air and thin atmosphere bites at your cheeks. The rugged landscape of the high altitude plain reminds you of the craggy landscape of another planet, filled with loose rocks and sporadic mounds. As you descend into the rainforest basin, the trees return as a cloud forest, offering unique biodiversity and lush greenery contrasting the Andean Highlands, and marking your arrival into the Tambopata National Reserve.

Our trip was beyond awesome. We made memories for a lifetime in Peru and the Galápagos Islands. Standing on the equator in Quito and the different experiments on the equator were a hit with kids and adults alike. There was excellent planning and execution by our Zicasso travel specialists. All the guides and excursions were great and we made good friends with them. They went above and beyond to recover our (lost/forgotten) items in a hotel and plane. Two thumbs up.

Peru, Ecuador Vacation Review: Sacred Valley, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Galapagos, Amazon, Quito, Snorkeling, Wildlife, Nature, 15 Nights

Our trip from start to finish was absolutely fantastic. The Amazon jungle was a blast. I paid for an extra full-day excursion to fish for piranhas, which was definitely a great decision and one of the highlights of our trip (we had the piranhas for lunch, and they were delicious).

The Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Machu Picchu were fabulous. And then, the Galápagos were extraordinary, from the unexpected serenity of the place to the crew of the boat, and, of course, the proximity to wildlife, including snorkeling with sea lions. It was especially meaningful to be in these places with our entire family (10 of us). Everyone understood how special it was and we will all cherish the experience all of our lives.

The Zicasso travel company was fantastic from start to finish. Our travel specialist went far beyond the call of duty to help us, especially when one family members could not make the trip. He helped us with replacing that person with another. He was remarkably prompt, clear, and informative in all communications, both in planning the trip and during it. He has a very kind heart and is a great human being. I cannot say enough positive things about him.

Peru Vacation Review: Amazon Rainforest, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, Lake Titicaca, Lima, Huacachina, Sandboarding, 2 Weeks

We discovered our travel company through Zicasso and had an incredible experience planning and executing our trip to Peru. This was our first journey to South America and, since we don’t speak Spanish, we decided to work with a travel agent for this trip. Having planned all our travels around the world on our own, we were initially hesitant to entrust someone else with such an important task. However, our agent exceeded our expectations and made the entire process seamless and enjoyable.

From the very beginning – five months before our trip – our agent was a pleasure to work with. She was prompt, responsive, and attentive to our aspirations for the trip. After discussing the types of activities we wanted to include, she crafted a comprehensive itinerary filled with diverse and exciting options. Together, we refined the plans through a few iterations until we arrived at the perfect itinerary for our dream vacation.

Our two-week adventure in Peru was nothing short of amazing, taking us through the Amazon rainforest, the cultural heart of the Inca civilization in Cusco, the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, the breathtaking Rainbow Mountain, the tranquil beauty of Lake Titicaca and the floating islands in Puno, and the vibrant coastlines of Lima and Huacachina, where we experienced sandboarding and a flight over the Nazca Lines.

Throughout the trip, our agent stayed in constant communication, providing detailed updates and guidance for each day’s activities. Every guide she arranged for us was a local expert with deep knowledge of the region’s history, architecture, and culture, which added immense value to our experience.

Even when we encountered a minor hiccup with one of the tours, our agent handled it promptly and professionally, resolving the issue without hesitation or resistance. Her dedication and attention to detail ensured our trip was smooth and stress-free.

Thanks to our agent and her incredible network of guides, we had a phenomenal experience in Peru. We highly recommend visiting this beautiful country and entrusting our tour company with your travel plans. Without a doubt, we would work with our agent for future adventures!
