Madrid – A Palace and a Plaza: Introductions to Spain

Spain almost stumbled upon its wealth, the unified nation less than a century old when Columbus spotted the land of the Americas. Within another century, Spain was the wealthiest nation on the planet with the capital city of Madrid. After a chauffeured airport transfer and some relaxed time at the hotel, you will be introduced to the city by connecting the two vast memoirs from the glory years. First, the largest of all Europe’s royal palaces with so many glittering archways and grand rooms doused in murals.  From there, enjoy the Plaza Mayor, the centerpiece of Madrid’s cultural life with so many terraces where you can sip a glass of wine as the facade reflects red in the fading sun. Walking between them, you will get a sense of how the historic center of Madrid remains the vibrant heart of the city, some 500 years on. Looking for the best Spain travel ideas? Detailed Description

On the isolated plains of Iberia is the legacy created when marauding civilizations decided to stay. Roman relics are astonishing in their scale, Renaissance, and Gothic cities remarkable in their golden stone detail. Dotting the wooded hills are fairytale royal towns and blissful monasteries while along the cobblestone streets you can feel the history of the conquistadors, art collectors, and aristocratic dreamers. From Madrid to Lisbon and across the plains, you will also find that history is not something found in a handful of monuments or stories. In this part of the Iberian Peninsula, you will find cities that reflect their ancient era, whether you are sipping local wine on a central square lit by iron lanterns or wandering through a maze of narrow streets packed with mystique.

This two-week luxury tour will follow the trail of the old kingdoms and conquistadors as you hop between Madrid and Lisbon via the historical cities of Castilla y Leon and Extremadura. The ten destinations featured on this itinerary have deep contrasts, each with their roots in a different century and a distinctive atmosphere, yet each is similar in their unique ability to celebrate a grand period of history. From those still dominated by Roman legacy to those that take you on a journey through 500 years of architectural styles, the focus is on an immersion in the history, rather than a touring of the sights. By spending your evenings on elegant squares, and taking your time in the lanes of the past, you get to feel what it was like when these cities experienced their days of glory.

Start with several nights in Madrid for an insight into the best of Spanish art plus a day trip to the white-walled 11th-century city of Avila. Move next to Segovia with its dramatic setting and Roman aqueduct, before two days spent inside the golden sandstone streets of Salamanca, which dates from somewhere between the 13th and 18th centuries. Stop at an incredible monastery in Guadalupe while on route to Trujillo, and then take a couple of days in Caceres, cities where so many conquistadors were born. Spend a day in first-millennium Merida before crossing the border to Portugal for several nights in capital city Lisbon with its mix of grand riverside districts and vibrant neighborhoods on the hills. You will travel with a mix of first-class high-speed trains and private chauffeured transfers, with local guides leading your discovery in each of the destinations.

Spain & Portugal Travel Review: Douro Valley, Lisbon, Segovia, Avila, Fine Dining, Luxury Two-Week Vacation
We had a truly unforgettable two week journey to Spain and Portugal, customized by the travel designer of this travel company. After much consultation by zoom with us, the designer understood the desires and specifications of our five person group. He listened when we explained that some members were physically limited and that we wanted a private car to maximize protection from COVID-19. we had expert drivers whose English was great and who could also advise about some sightseeing. We had superb tour guides on certain days when we targeted sights. The hotels were luxury boutique ones and all went beautifully-- including the cold, but never rainy,  weather. Two nights at the hotel & spa in the hills in Douro Valley were heavenly after the up and down trekking of lovely medieval hilltop towns in Toledo. Segovia, Avila, and Salamanca.  All of it was enlightening, fun, and as safe as travel csn be.

Travel Review: Luxury Family Tour of Spain & Portugal, Lisbon, Sintra, Duoro Valley, Azores Islands, Salamanca, Caceres

This travel agent is superlative, would give her 6 stars if possible here. We were in Portugal, (Porto, Douro valley, Lisbon), Western Spain, Madeira and Azores Islands for a three week family trip with two teenagers. She works by giving a detailed, passionate overview of her country's regions on the phone, and several rough first drafts of an itinerary based on your feedback. She encourages a bespoke model-- when I last minute wanted to include Salamanca and Caceres in western Spain, she fully encouraged us to go ahead with that and made it work in the itinerary by swapping out other places. Her choice of hotel bookings were super, and presented in two tiers for budget reasons. She went an extra step fulfilling my request to secure restaurant reservations for dinner each night of the trip. The guides were also very good - courteous, on time and knowledgeable. Best one was from Lisbon, who had my children enthralled about 800 years of Portuguese history. The most unusual thing about this agent is her willingness to go the extra mile- literally. She travelled three hours from her home to meet us at the airport to deliver not only our docs, a cell phone and the fully programmed sat nav, but a camera battery charger for my Nikon that I'd left at home and had asked her to locate a store so I could buy it- and there it was, she astoundingly had stopped by a camera store on her way so that I did not have to! She is readily 'available' for the duration of the trip for any advice or problem solving. This was my first use of a travel agent, and Zicasso- I am a trip planner and have done many detailed itineraries for six other long summer trips, and decided to get some help this time and am thrilled I did.

Travel Review: Tour of Spain & Portugal, Lisbon, Douro Valley, Seville, San Sebastian, Ronda, Local Culture & Cuisine, Art

We had an amazing 6 weeks travelling to 13 places exploring Iberian food, architecture, people, culture and history. It was phenomenal, and it was made possible by the exceptional job done by this travel company and the knowledge and detail that this agent and his crew brought to the planning. Their value of deep in-country experience and pride was invaluable.

Our itinerary was: Lisbon, Porto, the Douro, Salamanca, Segovia, Madrid, Toledo (day trip), Seville, Granada, Nerja, San Sebastian, Salardu (Val D'Aran), and Barcelona. We consulted with this travel company to travel at the best season: when the south is not yet hot, and when the north is not still cold. We drove for three segments, had personal drivers for a few, took a train for two segments, and flew for the long segment. A detailed written description was provided for each locale, and for places to explore along our driving routes. We saw very historical and wonderful sites that tourists often do not visit. In each town, we were provided a personal local guide to orient us, and to provide us with a feel for customs of the place. Hotels were phenomenal. A lot of details for a long trip. And this travel company made impeccable plans that executed perfectly.

I am recommending this company to my friends seeking in country expertise for that... extra special experience.

Spain Tour Review: Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Sevilla, Granada, Malaga, Madrid, La Rioja, Cordoba, Toledo, Salamanca
We started working with Angela at our travel agency in early fall of 2019, anticipating that our trip to Spain would take place in May 2020. Angela was great to work with. She presented an initial draft itinerary based on the information we had submitted on the Zicasso on-line questionnaire and after we selected this travel agency she was professional in all of her dealings with us, and very easy to work with as we modified the itinerary. We worked primarily via e-mail, although if either party felt a phone call would be better, we communicated that way. Angela answered all of our questions and responded to e-mails very promptly. She further questioned our travel preferences, likes and dislikes, etc. and in the end very much tailored the trip to our style of travel. By late fall we had made our deposit and were ready to travel spring of 2020.And then COVID hit. The trip was postponed until, we hoped at the time, spring of 2021. But because there was still so much going on then pandemic-wise, we further postponed until this year, and the trip finally happened! Our travel agency held the original pricing and even refunded a portion of our deposit in 2020, at our request. They were very easy to work with and we would recommend them highly to anyone considering a trip to Spain. We made our own air arrangements to/from the US and Spain, but Angela made all in-country rail and air travel reservations for us. We started in Barcelona ( 4 nights) and then went to San Sebastian (2 nights), Bilbao (1 night), Sevilla (4 nights), Granada (4 nights), Malaga (2 nights) and Madrid (5 nights).  From several of those locations we then did some day trips to places such as Girona, the La Rioja wine region, Cordoba, the White Villages area, Toledo, Salamanca and Segovia. The hotels she booked for us were generally 4 star quality and located in areas of each city that allowed us to easily walk to many of the venues we wished to see. Angela had private guides set up for various city, historic, and gastronomy tours. All of the guides were top-notch. They were knowledgeable, professional and friendly. We also always had adequate time to explore on our own.One other thing that was at first seemingly somewhat insignificant, but turned out to be a very nice feature, was that in our document package that our travel agency provided at our first hotel there was a Wi-Fi Away device. It was basically a personal wi-fi that we took from hotel to hotel so that once we originally logged in we never had to log-in again, or use any of the hotel wi-fi connections. It was secure and easy to use. The directions told us to leave it at our final hotel on checkout and our travel agency would come and get it.Angela provided names of suggested restaurants in the various cities that we stayed at, and she and her assistant, Paloma were available throughout the trip to answer questions that we may have had. They also made arrangements for someone to come to our hotel the day before our departure back to the US to do the COVID test that was required for re-entry to the US.

Spain is amazing.

The tour specialist was always very attentive and willing to help us. This is the type of trip that we were looking for, a trip where we had time to discover places, as well as time to relax and enjoy the journey at our own pace.

Not having to worry about transportation or parking, but instead having a driver to pick you up at the hotel or the airport is the best thing ever. Getting to the hotel, and finding everything organized and ready as well as being able to explore the city at our own pace was something that we had been looking for.

The staff in charge of our transfers and our guides were excellent. We enjoyed a lot visiting Segovia, Granada, Palmas de Mallorca, Valencia, and Toledo. in Seville, we had the best tapas tour, and a very knowledgeable guide.

I can not wait for the day we get to plan another trip with you.

Thanks for everything.

Luxury Spain Family Vacation, Sapa, Toledo, Madrid Flamenco Show, Seville Bicycle Tour, La Granja Tapas Tour, Segovia

Fantastic family trip - one of our best ever due to the impeccable planning and service provided by our agent and his team. Our trip started in Madrid and included day trips to Toledo, Segovia and LaGranja.  We loved the boutique hotel which was our home base for those first days.  Great location, elegant and unique.  Our walking tour guides in each of these cities were fabulous - knowledgable and a pleasure to spend the day with.  We ventured to Seville via high speed train for 2 days where the highlights were a biking tour of the city - such a fun way to see the sites and enjoy some exercise - and an evening "tapas tour" for dinner on our final night.  We stayed in another gorgeous and unique property, located in a perfect area for lots of walking!  The restaurants that our agent booked for us were outstanding!  Our agent checked in with us throughout the trip to make sure that we were happy, and we even had the pleasure of meeting him for a pre-dinner cocktail one evening.  How often does that happen?  5 star service!
