Barcelona – An Introduction to a Lively City

When you land in Barcelona, you’ll immediately sense the local pride. Catalan flags flutter from balconies, a unique language perforates the air, and the architecture is distinctly local. After you are escorted from the airport to your hotel, a guide will take you on a walking tour, first through the vintage relics of Barrio Gothic and then out into the district of Eixample, where the early works of Gaudi dominate the boulevards. This is a lively city and this introductory tour is a celebration of highlights, which leads you to the spire of La Sagrada Familia and onwards through boutiques and beautiful pedestrianized quarters. As the sun fades there’s a vibrancy to the streets, people milling on the plazas, and drinks being shared at the terraces. The football will start tomorrow but you’ll see the colors of FC Barcelona everywhere, including at the bars and cafes you visit.

Detailed Description

Note that all soccer itineraries are dependent on the dates of fixtures, and costs of game tickets will vary wildly. This itinerary coincided with the past group stages of the Champions League to create the rare opportunity to experience three live matches – two Spanish La Liga fixtures and a midweek Champions League match. This itinerary will be customized to your exact dates and may operate in a different direction dependent on matches. The Spanish and Portuguese football seasons run from September to May, with teams playing on most weekends – there are sporadic one-week international breaks along with a winter break on the weeks either side of Christmas. The optimal time to visit is during the Champions League, with six match days (Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures) from mid-September to mid-November, then the knockout stages played on various Tuesdays and Wednesdays from mid-February to mid-April.

Review: Tour of Spain & Portugal, Porto, Barcelona, Lisbon, Sintra, Evora, Cascais, Gibraltar, Gaudi Sites, Fado Performance

We had a really wonderful trip with 5 days in Barcelona where we had an excellent guide for visits to Gaudi sites as well as the Sagrada Familia church and on a separate day a very educational tour of the Picasso museum. Our travel company arranged the guide for us.

After Barcelona we boarded a cruise ship to Lisbon with stops in several cities in Spain and Gibraltar. At the dock in Lisbon we were met by a driver, arranged by this travel agency, who drove us to our hotel also arranged by the agency. Our guide in Lisbon was excellent. She guided us on a long walk in the Alfama neighborhood to the castle at the top. She also took us to a restaurant for a respite and introduced us to a typical Portuguese snack. Our travel agency arranged a driver and guide to take us to Evora where despite rain we had an interesting tour of the old university and the church followed by a lunch. On the way to Evora we had the opportunity to see cork trees which was very interesting and encouraged my wife to buy a cork purse and other cork gifts. The next day our trip took us to Cascais and Sintra with our guide. A beautiful area with wonderful history and a beautiful palace. We went to a restaurant that night and experienced a Fado performance.

Next we were driven to Porto by our driver, a very friendly, talented person who was an excellent driver. In Porto our guide was very good at introducing us to Porto including the train station and the old palace, all of which we enjoyed very much. The following day we had a fun time going to a recommended winery, Churchill's on the other side of the Duoro river by taking the subway and cable car. After spending time at Churchill's sampling and buying port, we walked back to have lunch and then to our hotel where the next morning we were met by our driver who drove us back to Lisbon for an overnight stay and then our flight home the next day.

Spain, Portugal Luxury Travel Review: Porto, Lisbon, Algarve, Seville, Barcelona, Museums, Cathedrals, Food Tours, 2-Week Trip
We spent two weeks in Portugal and Spain visiting five areas: Porto, Lisbon, the Algarve, Seville, and Barcelona. The trip was great; well planned and with no issues. All of our tour guides were wonderful. Our tours consisted of museums, cathedrals, food tours, city tours, and wine and sherry tastings. We also received several restaurant suggestions in every area we visited and all of them were fantastic. We would highly recommend the agency we used to anyone traveling to these countries.

Portugal Travel Agent Review, Marvao, Lisbon Synagogue, Alentejo Wine Tour & Tasting, Fado House Food & Music, Seaside Villages

Many people told us that if we liked Spain, we would love Portugal. This is a very accurate statement. This tour agency made our 15 day trip a memorable experience. Our guides/drivers were professional, personable, knowledgeable and passionate about their country and vocation. In addition, this tour agency arranged for a tour of the Lisbon Synagogue with a member of the congregation, and a special tour guide, for the Jewish Museum and Quarter in Belmonte.

Our Destination Expert, was very hands-on. Upon our arrival, she and our guide met us at the airport and provided us with a portable WI-FI and for our return flight, she even guided us through the airport to navigate check-in, baggage tagging, and security. She was always on top of our travels, especially notifying our guide when there were unplanned changes, such as the change in the time of the mass in Belmonte from Sunday to Saturday evening.

We visited the castles and villages in the East where you could see Spain in the distance. We toured and tasted wine from the Alentejo region. Our visit to the Douro Valley included a Port wine tasting and production tour. This area had spectacular vistas which we viewed from. the highest peak and from the boat tour on the river which gives you a very different perspective of the terrace grape vines. Next, we traveled to Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, and added a tour of the Casa da Musica built in 1999 and the Serralves Museum and sculpture garden. Lello bookstore was a magnificent surprise. What a beautiful interior! From Porto to Lisbon, we visited many beautiful seaside villages. We loved our tour of St George’s Castle and the Alfama area. Our evening at a Fado House with dinner and music was a special experience. Cooking Lisbon was tasty, and we can hardly wait to make some of the dishes at home.

Over the course of our trip we visited magnificent churches from the 13th to the 19th century and we never get tired of looking at the Azulejos. The pastries throughout Portugal are exceptional, though we are glad we waited until Belem to try the pasteis de nata, a delicious warm custard pastry. Of course, we sampled other treats during our travels.

The guides truly listened to us. When we expressed a delight in seeing the Roman Temple of Diana in Evora, our guide asked if we would like to take a short side trip to see a small Roman excavation, Ammaia. It was delightful. Also, when visiting Sintra. Our guide gave us a choice with the pro and cons about visiting Queluz National Palace rather than the Pena Palace. We decided on the Queluz National Palace. It was a wonderful and a relaxing tour.

If we attempted to tour Portugal on our own, we would not have visited the great range of sites that the agency provided. Moreover, without the expert commentary of our guides, we would not have understood the subtleties of Portuguese culture and history as well as we did.  This agency is an excellent resource and should we re-visit Portugal, we would not hesitate to use it again.

Travel Review: Customized Golden Spanish Experience - 10 days
Our trip to Spain was great and we saw so much in 10 days. We arrived into Barcelona (I wish that we had spent an extra day or two there ... we really only had a day and a half). We then flew to Sevile. We took a train to Cordoba (supposed to spend the day there but left early ... it was extremely hot). We had a tour of Seville. It was the quarter final of the World Cup while we were there ...EVERYONE was watching the game. We watched on TV that was set up outside of a restaurant in a little square ... everyone was singing and dancing! Very fun and exciting! We took the AVE train to Madrid (very comfortable and easy to use). We did a tour of the Real Madrid Stadium (there was a huge line at the gift shop ... everyone was buying red Spain football shirts. We had a really good private tour of Toledo (by car/private driver). Almost all of the tour guides were great (the one in Cordoba was good ... but a bit boring) and really added to the experience. Some of the hotels were just OK ... all the beds in every hotel were hard. We could have used some guidance on restaurants in the different cities where we stayed (the hotels were not helpful at all in suggesting places) ... we ate at some really bad, expensive restaurants (that the hotels suggested). The Spain travel company was very responsive and very helpful if we ran into difficulties. Their documentation was very thorough. Could have been a bit more creative in their itinerary ... I told them we were traveling with my 14 year old son and didn't want to just do sightseeing and cathedrals, etc... We finished our stay in Madrid on the last night of the World Cup Final .... we went to the Plaza del Sol to watch the final ... thousands and thousands of people ... it was very, very exciting ...Spain won ... such a great way to end our trip!

Spain, Portugal Vacation Review: Lisbon, Cascais, Barcelona, Madrid, La Sagrada Familia

From the moment I contacted Zicasso (after lots of research) until we returned home, everything was simply amazing. I contacted Zicasso in January 2024 to help with a trip to Spain for May. They had two agents/agencies contact me via email and both followed up with phone calls.

Subsequently, they both sent itineraries to consider, followed by more phone calls and tweaking of the schedule. We chose to go with one of them. From the moment we landed in Lisbon to the moment we departed Barcelona nine days later, every detail was handled without a hitch. The cars/drivers to the hotel, airport, and train station were always right on time and the drivers were so very personable. We did three tours in Lisbon, two in Madrid, and three in Barcelona.

Every tour guide was nothing short of amazing in knowledge and engagement. We are older travelers (83 and 75) and we wanted to do as much as possible without wearing ourselves out. That was where the communication and planning with our travel team really proved invaluable.

Finally, I was amazed that the cost for all we experienced was well within our rather conservative budget. Rest assured, I will recommend and use the services of Zicasso in the future.
