Detailed Description
Portugal has always had distinct style. The cities and villages of the nation run to their own rhythm, sometimes rooted as far back as the 12th century, or one that has been enhanced by the creativity of tomorrow. The country has always been happy to let others in Southern Europe take the plaudits, so rather than chase tourism, Portugal has mostly sat back and waited for visitors who want to uncover its secrets and its style. Only recently has Portugal come to receive international acclaim, particularly the much-talked-about capital city of Lisbon as a city getaway. While tourism is increasing at a rapid rate, visitors tend to relax on the beaches of the south or follow relatively standard routes through the interior, leaving so much of Portugal off of the beaten track.
This handcrafted 19-day tour is a celebration of Portugal’s style and rhythm. Alongside your private guides, you will hop across the country with a pace that will suit the local ambiance. Start with nearly a week in Lisbon, which will be just about enough time to really get to know the city and its breathtaking collection of art, architecture, neighborhoods, and traditions. There will be time to discover Sintra and the royal palaces, as well as the private galleries, the colorful markets and much more. The next several days will bring an exploration of the Alentejo plains, where the UNESCO World Heritage cities have a frontier feel and a wonderful sense of remoteness. You will be surrounded by the garrison feeling of old-world Iberia, with a quick jaunt to neighboring Spain and a city that was once part of Portugal.
Travel north as you continue with the last Templar Knights town of Tomar your base for several nights. Travel to idyllic Moorish fishing villages and discover how Gothic styles morphed over the centuries, and whisper the name of legends that fill this piece of Portugal. Keep traveling north over the next two days to iconic destinations like Coimbra, Aveiro, and Guimaraes, and each will feel very different to the old cities of the south. Each has its own style and atmosphere, and all are stoically preserved from every turn. Completing this private tour are several nights in Porto in a hotel amid the UNESCO World Heritage center with incredible charm found around every alleyway.
Over this 19-day adventure, you will find that the Portuguese style is idiosyncratic to its regions and destinations. The best way to explore the historical and cultural narratives is with local guides. Their insider knowledge will bring a new dimension to your discovery, as well as gain you access to sites that are usually closed to the public. With so many days at hand, you will be able to visit a handful of exceptional monuments and sites every day but can travel at a pace that is in keeping with the style. When each day is done, you can sit back on the al fresco terraces and join the locals in watching the world go by. My wife and I have been lucky enough to travel to many places around the world, but our April 2025 journey organized by Zicasso's tour company was easily one of the best. Our agent and her team thought of every detail. All we had to do was show up and enjoy these two beautiful countries!
We went to Four cities: Lisbon, Porto, San Sebastián, and Barcelona. The itineraries were thoughtfully planned to give us great experiences without wearing us out too much. And the guides in each city were fun, knowledgeable, and engaging. The transportation was always easy and on time, and the hotels were top-notch.

This was a fantastic trip to Porto, Lisbon, and the surrounding areas, tailored to our needs and interests. We had an extensive walking tour of Lisbon, vineyards, and historic sites with our tour guide. Zicasso's travel agent provided personalized service consistent with a good small company. There was a rail strike while we were there and they handled it.

We enjoyed the trip. The guides were good, although our guide in Lisbon provided a little bit too much history. But he was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed his tours. The communication with the Zicasso company through WhatsApp was very good and they were very accommodating to upgrading our transport vehicle because our luggage was large. The food tours were good. We enjoyed all the sites that we saw. Barcelona, especially, was great.
We stayed at four hotels. Only the hotel in Porto was a disappointment. The other hotels were good and we were very comfortable. The breakfast that was served at the various accommodations varied in quality, but the breakfast buffet in Lisbon was extremely good. The hotel in Porto was definitely not a four-star facility. The local airline definitely does not have its act together. When we left Barcelona to come home, the line for the airline was about five or six times the length of every other line. I would have definitely been willing to pay a higher amount for a business class seat in order to use the very short line in the Porto airport.

The travel agent from Zicasso's tour company planned for my family of four the most spectacular and luxurious two-week trip around Portugal. We traveled to and enjoyed the highlights of Lisbon, the romantic architecture in Sintra, the incredible history of Évora, the beautiful coastline of the Algarve, the laid-back atmosphere and gorgeous scenery of Madeira, the beautiful, historical, bustling city of Porto, and the stunning scenery of the Douro Valley.
The travel agent's suggestions and bookings were all perfectly aligned with what we envisioned and the accommodations booked were all beautifully appointed and family-oriented – five-star hotels that catered to the entire family, with indoor pools and kids greeted with backpacks and toys at the door, and nightly treats on pillows.
The tour guides booked were all very knowledgeable and kind. They were patient with my two- and four-year-olds, and taught us all so many new, amazing things.
Every day was a highlight, but I would say my girls really enjoyed the tile painting as well as the pastel de nata-making workshops.
My husband and I really enjoyed Évora and Sintra, and truly seeing the beauty and history of it all.
We absolutely fell in love with Portugal, the culture, and the food. My only regret is not having more time so we could’ve seen the Azores as well and stayed even longer.
We so look forward to this travel agent planning us another perfect vacation in the near future!

Zicasso's travel company made our travel easy. All drivers and events were on time, friendly, and professional. The exposure to cooking in the Porto countryside with a chef would never have happened without our trip planner planning it. Our hotels were perfect.

This was a wonderful, perfectly balanced experience, so well planned by Zicasso’s trip coordinator at the tour company! From the arrivals to the departures, every connection went smoothly. From being met by our excellent drivers and superb, knowledgeable guides, everything that we were able to pack in during our short, intense visit was a well-planned and interesting highlight!
To all of our drivers, thank you! To our guides in Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais, Coimbra, Porto, and Barcelona, much appreciation for your expertise and patience. And the hotels were superb too! We only wish we could repeat the very same mother-daughter trip with more time! We particularly enjoyed a rainy afternoon's sailboat ride on the Douro River with our hostess and the excellent captain.
