Santiago de Compostela – Convening With Travelers from Around the World

Your plane will arrive at the Santiago de Compostela Airport. This city has served as a beacon of spiritual realization as many backpackers, young and old, have hiked for weeks to arrive here. Today, you will settle into your accommodation in the city’s old town.

Once you are settled in, you can enjoy a walk around the city and marvel at the intricate architecture of this prosperous town and reflect on its antiquity. You will see the reason this city holds the title of spiritual realization as you stand alongside the many pilgrims who are convening in the town plaza. While you are here, you will most likely be distracted by the Praza do Obradoiro, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and the majestic, medieval buildings that encircle you. Santiago de Compostela serves as a “mecca” to travelers from around mostly Europe. They have just hiked across Northern Spain and have been yearning to arrive here at this very place. This spiritual tradition dates back to the 13th century because St. James, who was an apostle of Jesus, made the same trek. The nature of this very city is cemented in its historical roots of greeting passengers from all over the world. No other experience can better serve as a welcome to you and your partner as you arrive in this glorious city.

On your stroll, be sure to take a walk through the park, Parque da Alameda, and let the nature astonish you as you walk closer inside and gaze at the beautifully organized rows of trees. Atop the hills, you can stare back at the city of Santiago and take in the adventure that awaits you on your trip.

Detailed Description

Northern Spain holds a captivating reputation in the country’s many regions as adventure, cuisine, and tradition are hallmarks in the area’s way of life. Galicia, Asturias, and the Basque Country each have their own offerings for travelers, bursting with tradition and a mystique that radiates around every corner. You will begin your journey in Santiago de Compostela, which is the most cosmopolitan city in the Galician province of Spain as it hosts millions of visitors worldwide as they arrive in the city that St. James walked to centuries before. Try the delicious delicacies that the Galician region offers and visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which still has its time-tested façade intact.

On day three, you will travel to the genteel Asturian capital of Oviedo, and with its pristine character and pedestrian-heavy promenades, you will be sure to feel invited. You will check-in to your luxurious accommodation and see the UNESCO designated pre-roman shrines that encapsulate the region’s architecture before taking a day trip to the Praia de Catedrais, where you will behold the sea-created cliffs along the beach. On the following day, you and your partner will take a relaxing stay in the city of Ribadesella, which is a destination that serves as a peaceful escape for Asturians to enjoy. You can try the delicious delicacies of this artisanal-minded town and visit the nearby centuries-old cave drawings.

Afterward, you will enter into the Basque Country and its capital of Bilbao, which is where the Guggenheim Museum holds modern art from around the world on display for visitors. You and your partner will go on a pintxos or tapas tour at a few lovely and local restaurants. The next day, you will enter into Spain’s treasured La Rioja region that produces the country’s most celebrated wine. Your venture will then take you to Haro, which is the center of wine production, and where you will receive an unveiling grand tour of the area’s best wineries that are situated among rows of beautiful vineyards.

Last but certainly not least will be you and your partner’s trip to San Sebastian. San Sebastian is a picturesque city that blends culinary esteem with beachside leisure. Relax at the nearby beach and behold the site of Santa Clara Island in the nearby distance. Then, you will dine in one of the city’s famed Michelin restaurants and realize why this city is hailed as an international food paradise.

Travel Review: Luxury Vacation to Spain and Portugal, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Lugo, Bilbao, Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra
Overall, we were very pleased with the service provided by our Spain and Portugal travel agent Senora Redondo. After outlining our preferences, she put together a very comprehensive and detailed itinerary and made all of the arrangements involved down to the last detail. The hotels were generally conveniently located and all were clean and provided efficient and attentive service. The Astoria in San Sebastian and the paradors in De Fuente de and Ribadeo were our favorites. In Santillana del Mar we would have chosen the parador outside the restoration since we prefer visiting real places not overrun by tourists. The other hotels were good overall, but we had great difficulty finding them. Directions from primary roads with good maps or a GPS in English would have been much appreciated. In both Lisbon and in Santiago del Compostella, our rooms were below street level, noisy and lacking privacy unless windows remained closed with curtains drawn. We found the room in the Hotel Inspira Marta cold and austere, like a gray and white concrete prison cell. In addition, the electronics were so complicated that we needed lessons to operate the lights. Senora Redondo arranged for three city tours. Our half-day city tour in Barcelona was disappointing and quite inefficient. The tour started late and our guide was equally disorganized. His explanation of the sites was cursory at best, and he spoke English rapidly and with a thick accent, which made him difficult to understand. Again we wasted hours visiting a restoration instead of authentic sites. We would have preferred an on/off city tour. On the following day we traveled with another company to Gerona and Figueres, which was far better, much more professional. Our guide was efficient, knowledgeable and well spoken. We had a similar positive experience on our Madrid city tour. Our favorite stops were Barcelona, Gerona, Figueras, San Sebastian, Debu, Bilbao, Comillas, Cudillero, Fuente de in Picos de Europa, Rebadeo, Lugo, Porto, Coimbre, Lisbon and Madrid. We visited other towns and cities, but ended up eliminating several of the suggested stops listed on our itinerary as the trip became too hectic partly because we spent so much time finding our way without good directions. Overall, we would give this Spain and Portugal travel agency and especially Senora Redondo a brava for a job well done and would recommend them to friends interested in traveling to Spain and Portugal. We loved our trip. We hope our comments will be helpful.

Spain Tour: 20K Race, Madrid, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Wine Country, Bilbao, Guggenheim Museum

On November 5th 2013 a team of 16 from “The Pasadena Pacers Running Club” from Southern California arranged by our running tour group, arrived in Spain to do the Behobia-San Sebastian 20K race.  The race was spectacular, it was beyond beautiful and even more memorable were the spectators who were so enthusiastic that even though the race was tough you felt like you were flying because of their exuberance!

The service from the Madrid tour operator was so professional, every aspect went off without a hitch. Our every need was catered to, even the ride to and from the race! It was our guide's day off because the race itself had arranged public transportation to and from for all of us runners.  But instead of us going through this grooling process he arranged for us to have a private bus take us to the start in Behobia and drop us off back at our hotel in San Sebastian after the race! And if you are a runner you know how invaluable this really is!  Our guide even took pictures of us along the race course and cheered us on. It’s really impossible not to fall in love with this guy...we spent four days with him in San Sebastian and he knows every nook and crannie of where to get the best food in this gastronomic capital of Spain, and he will personally take you there!  He totally went out of his way to make sure we had a most perfect time.

We saw and felt so much beauty in Madrid, San Sebastian and Barcelona, these cities are amazing with history, food, and friendly well dressed Spaniards! These people are proud of their country and are so warm and engaging.

The itinerary was absolutely perfect, we saw and did so much!  Excursions to the wine country, a MUST DO experience at the Sideria, Cider house, walking and culture tours, the Guggenheim Museum, and so much more!  We stayed in such beautiful hotels, with such warm and friendly service, expertly located with really great food!

All the drivers were spot on with timing and our other guides were so great, this travel company definitely knows how to pick their people! I never had a worry the entire trip, it was expertly orchestrated!

If you are thinking of taking a trip to Spain, please choose the team at this travel company, you will not be disappointed! I promise!

Spain, Portugal Vacation Review: San Sebastian, Porto, Douro River Valley, Culture, Wine, Local Cuisine

We outlined our desires to visit the Basque region of Spain and Portugal's Douro River Valley, with an emphasis on the culture, food, and wine of the two regions. We are in our mid-70s, so we asked that activities be designed at a pace appropriate for our age.

The itinerary designed by Zicasso’s travel team met all of these requests. Our guides/drivers were superbly prepared to explain the culture and culinary milieu throughout our trip. The guides were also universally punctual, open, and affable.

We were especially pleased with the excellent locations of our hotels. In San Sebastian, we had a really excellent pintxos restaurant across the street. The owner was exceptionally helpful in choosing items from the menu, as well as local beers. And in Porto, the hotel staff recommended a small, relaxed restaurant with excellent local cuisine just half a block away.

Our walking food tours of the two cities were excellent, both in the quality of the tastings offered and the pace through the cities. And our wine tours complemented our tastes perfectly. We could not have asked for more.

Northern Spain Review: San Sebastian, Santander, Oviedo, Prehistoric Caves & Paintings, Birding, Pintxos Tour & Cooking Lesson
The trip to northern Spain was excellent. Every one of the planned excursions/events worked out well, the guides and drivers were very good, and the itinerary was thoughtful and fun. We stayed in 3 cities during our trip: San Sebastian, Santander, and Oviedo. We loved San Sebastian-- lovely city, fun pintxos tour, good cooking lesson and market visit with 2 very enjoyable cooks/guides, nice beach time. From Santander, we visited 3 prehistoric cave sites to look at cave paintings and learn about early human settlements, and spent a morning visiting a medieval town nearby. In Oviedo, we visited sites in the lovely city and spent a day with a hiking/birding guide in the Picos de Europa national park. We also stopped in Bilbao to see the Guggenheim Museum. There was enough free time for the 3 of us, along with several planned activities that were all fun. We also had time to visit various museums, churches and cathedrals, an aquarium, and local parks and beaches on our own. This travel company did a good job of helping us plan an itinerary, then made all the necessary arrangements at each place. There were no glitches in the arrangements: every guide showed up on time, every visit lived up to its description. Accommodations were good (especially in Oviedo - we loved the hotel).

Luxury Spain Vacation Review: San Sebastian, Madrid, Rioja, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, Guggenheim, Ancestral Tour

First, the service provided by this Spain travel company and in particular, our agent was absolutely the best! Our agent planned our itinerary, and coordinated the hotels, drivers, flight, train, and any excursions we wanted. This was our dream trip to Northern Spain and our agent handled all of the details with perfection! We could not have planned this ourselves.  Every single part of our vacation was professional and perfect.  In the future, whenever I travel to Spain, I am immediately contacting this company and this agent to take care of everything from start to finish.   Do not hesitate to use this company. I found them through Zicasso and in the future I will also use Zicasso for travel outside the USA.

Secondly, our trip...We wanted to visit Northern Spain to see the areas where my great great grandparents and ancestors lived.  We flew to Madrid, then took a train to Rioja and stayed in Elciego during the wine grape harvest and crushing of the grapes. We then had a private driver take us to San Sebastian, where we stayed on the beach for two days and enjoyed the Bay of Biscay and delicious sea food. We then had a private driver take us to Santander, then to Oviedo and then to Santiago de Compostela. Each of these cities and the areas along the Northern Coast of Spain are incredible and unique. We flew back to Madrid from Santiago. I can highly recommend this itinerary for anyone traveling to Northern Spain! It was so filled and packed with history, food, wine, and scenery that we are still absorbing and processing it even after we returned home. Every detail was carefully planned by this company and our agent! Muchas gracias for a fabulous fabulous vacation and for fulfilling our dream of travel in Northern Spain!!!

Travel Review: Spain Tour, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Segovia, Bilbao, Royal Palace, Sagrada de Familia, Guggenheim Museum

Zicasso.com connected us with this agent and her company and from the start things could not have gone better.  After submitting an itinerary, our agent called me and discussed the proposed trip to Spain for 6 people.  She helped me narrow down the cities to visit to something manageable and relaxing rather than something hurried and rushed.  We decided on Madrid (4 nights), Barcelona (5 nights) and Donostia-San Sebastian (3 nights).  We stayed in large, modern, well-appointed apartments in very central areas of each city each time.  Our agent also arranged tours for us to various places, including the Prado museum (saw Velazquez' 1656 Las Meninas considered by many to be the best example of composition in painting ever), the Royal Palace and a side trip to Segovia.  Our tour guide was great, with degrees in art history and over 30 years experience, she educated us beyond our expectations.  We went to the Reina Sofia (saw Picasso's Guernica) and the Thyssen (private collection spanning many decades) museums on our own.  Our tour guide in Barcelona also was great, showing us and educating us about La Rambla, the Picasso museum (where we saw paintings from his blue period, cubism and 57 sketches of Las Meninas which he studied meticulously), the Gothic quarter and Gaudi's masterpieces including La Sagrada Familia (which is still not finished, but is supposed to be in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death).  Lastly Donostia-San Sebastian was a beautiful town, sandwiched between La Concha beach and the mountains.  We hiked Monte Urgull and saw the Sacre Couer and ate pinxtos at the best places, introduced to us by our lovely guide.  A side trip to the Guggenheim in Bilbao was probably not worth an entire day of leaving town for, however.
