Madrid – Gastronomic Welcomes and a Historic Boutique Hotel
Madrid doesn't feel like a capital city. Sure, there's the ambient laughter coming from the Plaza Mayor, the sprinklings of evening fiesta sailing past royal palaces, and the scents of opulence coming from exclusive restaurants. But there isn't traffic, smog or continual chaos. There isn't an enormous city map to decipher. Madrid's downtown area has an almost village-like feel, weaving alleyways connecting bookshops and innumerable al fresco terraces. It's the perfect welcome to the atmosphere of Spain, further elevated by your hotel in the heart of the city.
Moving back in time you enter the atmospheric dining hall of a 17th-century restaurant, the décor, and ceilings straight from the golden era of castles of conquistadors. As a gourmet banquet populates your table, an evening of gala entertainment begins; everything is themed to radiate a historic time. It's a surreal start to your Spanish vacation, one that sets the tone for the journey. Over the next 11 days you'll be escaping, not into a place of wilderness, but into a mood and atmosphere of traditional romance.

Detailed Description
Every corner of Spain looks like a scene for romance: the tiny cafe terrace overlooking a square of Renaissance architecture, a vintage wine estate lost amongst endless rows of vines, the beach of untouched sand that stands beneath coastal villages smelling of barbecued fish and intrigue. It's a country for getting away, not into the wilderness, but into an authentic culture that buzzes with enchantment and promises languid days indulging in both the country and your partner. This vacation has been handcrafted to head off the beaten path, taking you to destinations that have preserved the authentic feel of traditional Spain. It combines mountains, cities, tiny villages, and coastal bliss, blending the paradigms of escapism with hidden touches that elevate the romance: VIP wine tasting, exclusive restaurants, boutique hotels in 13th century buildings, each day something special to share.
Begin your tour of Spain in Madrid, an understated capital that's delectably quiet and easy to explore. Broad city squares make for benign introductions to Spain, the al fresco tables piling up with sumptuous wine, tapas, and chocolate. Step back in time as you travel to Toledo for days three and four, stopping at exclusive vineyards and royal palaces en route. Like Toledo, Cuenca stands proud on a mountain top and offers an intimate immersion in the Spain from idealized travel reverie. Pedestrianized streets run past boutiques and innumerable cafes, local life implores you to share your passion, and the evening light brings a further coating of enchantment to an ancient walled town. Throughout this vacation, most transfers are in a luxury sedan and your driver guide will be happy to give you a tour of the sights should you request. You may prefer to explore at your own pace. The exception is the high speed first-class train that takes you from Cuenca to Andalusia.
Day seven brings you to Seville, a city of eternal grace and gusto. Learn to dance flamenco style, the mythical strumming of Spanish guitar resonating across your steps. Explore World Heritage Sites and keep doing what this vacation is all about: relaxing, indulging, and flowing to the rhythm of classical Spain. Journey through the villages of Andalusia and you reach the coast on day nine, where the final three days are spent wallowing in peaceful harmony. Some Spanish beaches can be frustratingly crowded, but Zahara de Las Atunes maintains an intimate spell. Sheltered by a rolling expanse of cliffs and dunes, this coastal village cascades onto a blissful 10 mile long stretch of quiet sand. At the deserted end of the Costa de la Luz you will find an idyllic culmination to your romantic getaway.

We visited Madrid, Toledo, San Sebastián, Bayonne, Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hondarribia, La Rioja, Barcelona, Montserrat, and the Penedes (Cava) region.
We loved our private guides, private wine tastings, and day trips outside of the big cities.

The owners of Zicasso’s tour company were amazing from start to finish. They curated a custom trip for us to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Toledo, and Granada. They listened to our requests and came up with a brilliant itinerary that included personal drivers, hotels, dining recommendations, and tour guides. They were also so quick to respond to our questions and pivot our plans when needed. This was a very special 30th-anniversary trip for us and they knocked it out of the park.

We loved our trip to Spain and Portugal! We enjoyed each of our private tours with our tour guides in the various cities we experienced. They went above and beyond to share their knowledge of the planned sites, plus they added in individual unique sites and information along our walking route.
Zicasso’s tour company took all of our requested activities, venues, and interests to customize a trip that fit us well. They were in communication with us during our trip when a planned site was not available due to construction. Our tour guide provided us with other possible replacement options and let us choose what was of interest to us rather than them making the decision.
We tremendously enjoyed all of the cities, Madrid, Toledo, Granada, and Seville in Spain and Lisbon and Porto in Portugal. Our trip went smoothly and the activities were scheduled at a good pace for us! An extra bonus for us was seeing King Felipe VI by being in the right place at the right time near the opera house in Madrid while we were on our walking tour. We highly recommend Zicasso and the tour company.

We were very happy to be matched with Zicasso’s travel consultant to arrange our travel plans. His expertise and thoughtfulness were obvious through every detail, and his suggestions proved to be the right ones in nearly every case. The transfers made the travel stress-free and smooth. The drivers were professional and most engaging, with only one slight mix-up on the location when departing Mallorca, but this caused no issue.
We returned to Zicasso because of our wonderful experience they arranged for our trip to Italy a few years ago, and this experience was equally fantastic. It was very assuring for my wife and I to receive the notices and updates from our travel consultant while our travel was in progress. He was prompt and detailed from start to finish. My wife speaks Spanish very well and loved the opportunity to interact and rebuild her vocabulary.
All hotels selected were excellent. The service quality was a standout at the hotel on Plaza de las Cortes in Madrid and the resort on Carrer de les Molins in Mallorca, in particular. The accommodation in Granada was beautiful, although just for feedback, the room location was not so good, having a full window wall at nearly ground level looking at people at a cafe — which meant keeping the blackout drapes pulled the entire time — and, consequently, a little noisy. That is just meant as a note if you book this hotel in the future. The lower levels at the back of the hotel should be avoided. That probably had more to do with what was available at check-in time, but just a note.
As we mentioned to our travel consultant during the trip, all four private tour guides we had were wonderful and very knowledgeable. The day trip to Toledo was a standout, as was the Alhambra in Granada. The horse show at the Spanish riding school fulfilled my wife's wish over many years and it didn't disappoint. Our guide in Granada stayed with us nearly an hour beyond her time (even though we mentioned the time to her). She replied that she enjoyed spending time with those who appreciated her city – and we did. We enjoyed her historical perspective very much and she seemed to enjoy it too. Our other guides were all terrific and it was evident they all enjoy their work and are proud of their cities and heritage.
We loved the horseback riding at the ranch with our guide in Mallorca. The staff there went above and beyond when my wife lost a bracelet on the trail (unknown where or when). We were nearly back at the hotel when we got a call that one of their staff had found the bracelet. The manager offered and dropped off the bracelet at the hotel that night on her way home, before we left for Barcelona. Great people!
The crowning point was ending our travel at the Sagrada Família at sunset — awe-inspiring! We really don't have any complaints or things we would change. There is much we would add, however, had we had more time (and money).
Thank you, Zicasso, and Zicasso’s travel company, for helping make a great memory for my wife and me.

I know we worked together on content, so none of the activities or the schedule were a surprise. We enjoyed every activity and just loved Spain. Our trip was worry-free and we were in the country during the power outage. We were not able to visit a cathedral due to the power outage, but were able to do a different tour. Our guide was enthusiastic and we barely noticed any inconvenience.
Each guide was on time and personable. We had a couple of substitutes and that was not noticeable at all. In general, each guide was knowledgeable and we learned so much.
Our first guide, in Madrid, was so kind when he realized jet lag was going to cut our tour short – not his fault. He was the best choice for our first tour. He was so knowledgeable and helped to orient us to Madrid. It was so great to have a personal guide so we could ask questions.
Toledo was fantastic. We loved the guide and the city. The train ride was our first and we had to navigate the train station, but we did just fine after a few wrong turns. We took the bus to the station. The bus worked great. We were exhausted from our day in Toledo, but still walked from the train station. The information on how to get to the station was accurate and it was a lovely walk.
Sevilla was magical. We were surprised when our driver drove through a public square to let us out to walk to the hotel! We loved our tour, really liked the hotel, and had great meals in the restaurant. We got to know the bartender and she helped us experiment with local wines.
Our trip to Ronda was beautiful and our guide and driver were both excellent, especially our driver, who had to work around a running and walking event going on that meant our meeting spot was inaccessible. But he was on time and close, and we made it work!
Our trip to the olive oil museum was great, but we were part of a group and some of the people in the group were just stupid. I am allergic to olive trees and my allergies completely kicked up. We enjoyed the tour and bought olive oil, but I just couldn’t understand why some people on the tour were so rude.
The wine tasting also got us a spontaneous flamenco demonstration, which was fantastic. We stayed and did a wine tasting with the owner. We could have stayed all afternoon. She was lovely and interesting, and we enjoyed our time there very much.
Málaga was a joy and it was there we had the power outage. We had a great tour with our guide, who took so many pictures of us and slowed down to compensate for my tired legs. Touring was catching up with me. The Picasso Museum was open and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We loved our hotel and were very grateful there was a good restaurant with an excellent bar, and we took advantage of that!
Granada was worth a visit and our trip to the Alhambra was amazing; our guide was five-star.

Our experience with Zicasso and the tour operator was nothing short of amazing. From start to finish, everything was thoughtfully planned and beautifully executed. The tours in Madrid and Seville were incredible, each filled with history, culture, and stunning sights. Our guides were knowledgeable and engaging, bringing the stories of these cities to life and making the experience even more special.
After the busy city days, Estepona was the perfect place to slow down and relax. We enjoyed exploring the charming streets, indulging in a little shopping, and taking part in a fun and memorable cooking class that gave us a true taste of Spanish culture. The balance between sightseeing, cultural immersion, and relaxation made the trip feel perfectly designed just for us.
A special thank you goes to our travel agent, who was simply wonderful throughout the entire process. He was patient with all of my many questions, quick to respond, and flexible in accommodating every addition or change to the itinerary. His attention to detail and genuine care ensured we felt supported and stress-free from the moment we began planning to the very last day of our travels.
The accommodations, transfers, and overall flow of the trip were seamless, allowing us to simply enjoy the journey without worry. This trip exceeded our expectations and created memories that we will truly cherish.
We highly recommend Zicasso and the tour operator, and especially our travel agent. If you’re looking for a personalized, well-organized, and unforgettable travel experience, this is the way to go.
