Detailed Description

Spain is a country of passion and soul, where icons live on, and surprises are found on every corner. It is a country of endless highlights, from ethereal architecture and art to medieval cities and golden beaches. Moreover, it is a country that is memorable for its atmosphere and the soulful rendition of life that plays out on the streets. Nowhere is this ambiance better reflected than Barcelona, which is a glorious Catalan city on the coast. Second prize must go to Madrid, which is an enchanting capital city that is far more authentic than its European counterparts. Barcelona and Madrid are also gateway cities, which are bases from which to discover more of Spain. So, on this Barcelona Plus luxury itinerary, you also enjoy experiences in Penedes, Figueres, Sitges, Toledo, Avila, and Salamanca.

Handcrafted as a relaxed, Spanish vacation, this 13-day tour spends seven nights in Barcelona and five in Madrid. On some of the days, you explore the iconic cities, from the best of Gaudi to lanes of tapas and churros. Private day tours celebrate the best of the Catalonia and Castile regions, incorporating everything from decadent vineyards to golden sandstone cities and immense medieval walls. Along the way, this tour encounters Picasso, Dali, El Greco, and Montaner, but it is not entirely focused on the art and the sights. Exploring Spain also concerns relaxing on the beaches, lounging around restaurant terraces, and wandering local neighborhoods during the evening. By only having two overnight destinations, you will get comfortable and soon discover local neighborhood favorites along with all the iconic attractions.

With a full week in Barcelona, you can explore both the city and broader Catalan. Your hotel is within easy reach of the beach and the old Latin quarter, so there are many places to relax after a day of discovering the region. Spend two days in the heart of the city where Gaudi’s formative works are among the highlights. Escape to the Penedes vineyards on day three where the lush bubbles of Cava are created. Day four explores the northeast of the city, from La Sagrada Familia to Montaner’s stunning Sant Pau hospital.

Figueres is quaint and quiet and is a delightful Catalan town where Dali was born. Make a day trip here on day five before winding through old Barcelona on day six, from Montjuic Castle down to Barri Gotic. Culminating your experience in Barcelona is a day trip to Sitges, which is one of Spain’s most leisurely beach towns that are complete with colorful houses that line the way to an atmospheric swathe of Mediterranean sand. Travel from Barcelona to Madrid by train, which is the fastest connection between the two city centers. Then, admire how the atmosphere changes as Catalan flair is replaced by old-world elegance.

Make up your first Madrid impressions on days eight and nine as you stroll to the Plaza Mayor and relax in El Retiro Park. Visit El Escorial for a glorious example of royal excess. Toledo is easily reached on the train from Madrid, which is a complete, medieval city where you follow the El Greco trail across cobblestone hills. Three art museums provide the focus on day 11, including the world-famous Prado. Avila and Salamanca complete your vacation, which are glorious old cities with postcard sights at every turn. As with other day trips, you return to the city for an evening in your local neighborhood, indulging in the Spanish atmosphere. Consider learning more about our travelers’ best travel experiences by reading their Spain travel reviews.

Family Vacation to Spain Review: Sailing, Museums, Barcelona Bike Tours & Tapas, Madrid El Retiro Park, Nerja, Cordoba Mosque
Our family had an amazing vacation in Spain.  Our planner at this travel team could not been better to work with.  He was always quick to respond both during the planning phase of our trip, and as well as while we were in Spain.  If we showed up a few minutes late to meet a driver, we would receive a call or text to make sure everything was ok.  During our family sailing day, I left my purse on the boat and he kindly contacted our captain and set up a meeting time to retrieve it. I cannot express how wonderful it was to have a local travel agent to contact.  He also provided a WiFi hotspot to use which was key since we have 3 teenage children!  Our trip planner also met our family for a drink while we were in Madrid.  It was so nice to put a face to his name.  Meeting us in person was above and beyond good service. As for the actual vacation part:  We flew in and out of Madrid as it was the only direct flight from our area (DFW).  Once we arrived at the airport we had a driver take us to the high speed train to Barcelona.  We had a bike tour and tapas our first night in Barcelona which was a lot of fun and a great way to see the city.  We also toured La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and other Gaudi sites.  We had a great time at the Barcelona Cooking class making paella.  After Madrid we visited Seville first to the Triana area with an awesome local guide enjoying tapas and learning to appreciate sherry and Tinto de verano.  Of course we visited the Cathedral and Real Alcazar as well.  Then we had a day trip to the amazing Cordoba where we visited the Mezquita (Mosque Cathedral).  We took a break from touring and relaxed in the Axarquia region in Nerja.  The Nerja hotel was a beautifully situated hotel with amazing views. While in Nerja we had a fun family sailing day with our awesome captain.  We took a day trip to the incomparable Alhambra which is not to be missed!  Finally, we travelled to Madrid where we enjoyed a walking tour and the highlights of the Prado museum.  Our family enjoyed a day trip to Toledo and then took in a fabulous Flamenco show and dinner on our return to Madrid. We had time to explore Madrid on our own.  Our kids were done with tours by then, but my husband and I visited the Royal Palace (Wow!!!) and the Reina Sofia museum.  Then we ended with a stroll at Retiro Park. It was a full but wonderful vacation!

Luxury Spain Trip Review: Madrid, Seville, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Girona, Cadiz, Winery Visits, Cooking Class, Private Tours
Our trip to Spain was the the vacation of a lifetime! We asked Ana from this travel company to put together a trip that would be culinary focused, and also give us the opportunity to see as many of the sights of Spain that we could over two weeks. With that in mind, Ana put together an itinerary that we could not have come close to without her help. We had something exciting to see or do every day.... there were no letdowns the entire time. The two weeks went by so smoothly that when the last day came we felt completely satisfied and wished we could stay for more. Our hotels were nothing short of top notch! We stayed in locations across the country, including Madrid, Sevilla, San Sebastian, Barcelona and Girona. Ana had given us recommendations on the best places to stay, and every one was tremendous. They included classic hotels such as the hotels in Barcelona, in San Sebastian (which was right in the center of Playa De La Concha beach), and in Sevilla, which was absolutely stunning inside and out.  We had desired to eat at numerous Michelin restaurants during our trip. Ana gave us recommendations for all the cities that we were visiting, and every one was amazing. On our last day, we were able to eat at El Celler de Can Roca, ran by the famous Roca brothers and is one of the best restaurants in the world. Other restaurants that Ana arranged for us also included Martin Berasategui in San Sebastian, Compartir from the Disfrutar family in Barcelona, as well as Lena in Madrid, which was an amazing place to start our vacation!Ana from our travel agency also arranged tours and events that showcased all that Spain has to offer --- we had an amazing lunch served by our guide on the beach after touring Cadiz, we had private tours of the Habsburg's Quarter and Royal Palace in Madrid, along with touring the Prado museum. Our private tour guides allowed us to skip the long lines and each came with chauffeured limousines that picked us up daily at our hotels. Other activities also included touring wineries, olive oil makers, cheese farms, and one of our highlights ... a small cooking class where we were taught how to make spanish delicacies including paella.  The schedule that Ana put together was perfect. There's no way that we could have put together a plan to see all the places we saw without her help. Our two weeks were jam packed with a lifetime of memories, and while we were busy, we never felt rushed or had to cut anything short thanks to her tour planning.  Transportation was impeccable as well. We never had to drive anywhere ourselves, for all of our activities we were picked up at our hotel and driven in private Mercedes. Ana also booked the ideal transportation from going from city to city, including domestic flights and high speed rail.

Spain Luxury Vacation Review, Madrid Wine & Tapas Tour, Countryside & Cities, Local Food & Drink
Our trip planner did an outstanding job of creating the prefect customized trip. My husband and I had looked at organized tours, but in the end, for about the same money, we did exactly what we wanted to do. Our trip included travel to six cities (Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Granda and Barcelona) in 12 days. The transportation to and from each city was well executed and made the trip so enjoyable.  The guides in each city were local and provided lots of history in addition to personal stories about their home towns. Our wine and tapas tour in Madrid was such a success, that some of group met up the next night for dinner. The hotel recommendations exceeded our expectations for location, amenities and service. In addition, each hotel provided a large breakfast buffet with bread, meat, cheese, jamon, eggs, fresh fruit and juices. We had plenty of options to fuel our morning tours and hold us over until the 2pm lunch hour. We walked about ten miles each day and ate tapas and drank Sangria at almost every meal!In addition, the trip planner checked in with us multiple times during the trip to verify all was going well. Overall one of our best vacations!!

Spain Travel Review: Mudejar Architecture, Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Seville, Museums, Visiting Friends, Food & Sites
Our 3 week trip to Spain from Barcelona to Madrid was spectacular! We thank Zicasso for the advanced planning sessions with us, the hotel selections, the prearranged tickets and guides. Our trip planner interviewed us thoroughly before creating our itinerary to learn about our travel style, needs, interests, etc. He amended our itinerary multiple times to meet the specific places we wanted to include, our timelines, and budget constraints.  Hotels selections were all clean, centrally located, with comfortable beds, elaborate breakfasts and helpful, friendly, staff. Drivers and guides were professional, punctual, local, knowledgeable and passionate about their cities, and the planner arranged advanced tickets to key attractions. Given that my husband and I are elderly travelers, all of this enabled us to feel safe and secure getting around. Our planner also arranged for us to have a car for 5 days to more leisurely explore some of the white villages and the Cadiz, Jerez and Seville areas. A contact person was available to us 24-7 for any issues that might come up along the way.

Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia, Basque Country, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Museum, Sagrada Familia, 2-Week Trip
We just returned from a wonderful 2-week trip to Spain with emphasis on Barcelona, Basque Country and Madrid. The travel agent, Rosa, was an absolute gem during the planning stage, and provided thoughtful guidance and immediate responses to any questions regarding our ambitious itinerary.  Accommodations in Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao and Madrid were top-notch, in addition to being fun and unique. All included sumptuous breakfasts, and were centrally-located to attractions, dining and activities - we walked everywhere! Transportation between cities (car and train) was comfortable and efficient. Our trip was highlighted by our visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao - we cannot recommend it enough. Sightseeing tours in all locations were detailed and informative, and featured pleasant and knowledgeable local guides for our 1/2-day and full-day trips. We highly recommend this travel company for any Spain-bound travelers!

Spain Tour Review: Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Prado Museum, Sagarda Familia, Gaudi Sites, Flamenco Performance, Cooking Class

I would like to start by saying that this was the best travel experience I have ever had, which is an amazing accomplishment given the short notice (booked ~1 mo prior) and a pregnant wife and barely ambulatory 83 year old wife. My agent was flexible and accommodating and created a varied, interesting trip that all of us enjoyed. The impetus for trip was for my wife's grandmother to see Spain before she was too frail or immobile to do so. And what better time than while our soon to be baby boy is still incubating.

Our trip began in Barcelona. Upon arrival, it became clear how pampered we were as we were picked up with our private driver in a Mercedes SUV arranged by our agent. And this turned out to be true throughout trip as we had transportation set up throughout entire trip along with privately guided tours...and the price was better than comparison trips either through Zicasso or independent. Our first full day was spent at Gaudi's Casa Battlö and the Barri Gotic. Our private tour guide was phenomenal. I've never had a private you before, but it was personal, interesting and she pointed out little details that were so interesting. I found a lot of tourists leaning towards us to catch her discussions on art, architecture or history. She was also accommodating, taking taxis or using wheelchairs for grandma where appropriate.

The next day was a longer day that included private guided tours of Sagrada Familia and Picasso museum. Again this was a private guided tour. Phenomenal!

The third day was a trip through another tour company, setup by our agent, to see Salvador Dali's museum in Figueras and his hometown of Cadaques. It was clear how good our travel company's guides were compared to this guide. Although good, she was not as fluent in Spanish and her recommendations weren't as spot on. Despite this, we had a great time, especially because we are a phenomenal lunch at traditional Catalan restaurant, Casa Anita, in Cadaques.

The next morning, we explored La Bocqueria with a cooking class, set up by our agent, based on my request. This was another fun and very informative session. Didn't hurt that this was best paella I've ever had!

The next portion of our trip was Madrid. Here we had privately guided tours of Real Pallacio, the Prado and tapas experience. Again, the guide was phenomenal!

The final day was in Toledo with another very good private tour. This included tours of the city and the amazing cathedral. She tailored it to show us the art within the cathedral which I was interested in.

Lodging:

-Hotel in Barcelona was large suite with two rooms. Comfortable and great location with awesome and helpful staff.

- Hotel in Madrid was a great location with an amazing breakfast (included), but triple rooms were small and cramped, but nice.
