Madrid – Don Quixote and Sancho Panza Watching You Walk By

Miguel de Cervantes is remembered in the heart of Madrid. A towering statue of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza stand on the Plaza de España. There's an air of mischief and indomitability to Quixote's pose, the fictional hero cast in the compelling bronze of fairytale. Seated above the pair is Cervantes, the legendary storyteller offering a gaze of contemplation. He's master of his realm, able to blur the distinctions that mark the lines of fantasy. To one side sits a peasant woman, Aldonza Lorenzo, while to the other sits the idealized and beautiful Dulcinea del Toboso. Together, they form the surreal image of Don Quixote's true love, representing both the knightly reward for reviving chivalry as well as the connection with La Mancha's village roots.

You'll be greeted at the airport and transferred to a five-star, boutique hotel set in the heart of old-world Madrid. After time to freshen up, you'll spend two hours visiting the city's most important landmarks, culminating in the monument to Cervantes and his immortal characters. An expert Cervantes guide conducts the tour, helping to unravel the complexities of both his stories and his life. Tradition comes alive as the bronze Quixote watches you walk by, your guide starting to open the chapters of one of the most influential writers in world history. 400 years from his death, Cervantes continues to remain as important today as he was in the early 17th century. At the time, many authors expertly moved readers to another place; Shakespeare, who died on the same day as Cervantes, is a prime example. But this great Spanish author began to take readers into another realm.

Detailed Description

Don Quixote is a literary masterpiece of surrealism, immersing the reader in a blur of myth and poetry. 2016 marks the 400-year anniversary of author Miguel de Cervantes's death, yet the Spain of his imagination remains very much alive. Immerse yourself in his home region of La Mancha, and you will discover that quaint traditions and quixotic tales continue to dominate the landscape. You'll find a version of old-world Spain from the fables, one of the giant windmills, boutique bodegas, majestic paradors (luxury hotels in converted historic buildings), and streets of intriguing cobblestone. As you explore Cervantes' life and times, you capture the untamed spirit of Quixote's idealistic fairytale. By settling into the rhythm of La Mancha, the destinations feel absolutely fictional. And that's the great tribute to both Miguel de Cervantes and the Spanish Golden Age; the hypnotic ability to transport you into another realm.

This luxury Spain tour has been uniquely crafted as a tribute to Miguel de Cervantes on the 400-year anniversary of his death. An expert literary guide leads you from Madrid to La Mancha and the glory of Spain's Golden Age. You'll recreate the knightly tales by traveling through rural landscapes, as well as exploring significant places from Cervantes' life. Five-star accommodations continue your immersion in a medieval era, including two nights in a wonderful parador castle. Much like Quixote and Cervantes, food and drink play an important part. Think tapas trails, ancient brandy cellars, and culinary feasts delivered to al fresco terraces. Transfers are in a luxury saloon vehicle, and the pace is relaxed, yet compelling enough to spur a turn of the page.

Recreate the swashbuckling adventure in Madrid, where Quixote and Sancho Panza gaze down in immense sculptured form. On a day trip to the World Heritage Site Alcala de Henares, you receive an intimate perspective into the author's hometown. The following evening, traditional tapas dishes blend with literary history as you wander through Huerta, an area made famous by many Golden Age writers. Then, you come face to face with the windmills Quixote mistook for giants, along with the cute village where Cervantes penned much of his masterpiece. As you move through the region, you explore castles, homemade cuisines, vast untamed landscapes, and ancient open-air theaters that still perform Don Quixote productions. From Almagro to Valdepenas to Torrenueva, you journey into the heartbeat of La Mancha, each seductive stop another chapter detailing famous knightly acts of chivalry.

The following nights are spent deep within this landscape, with unique vineyards and paradors offering space to reflect on how mystery blurs into fantasy. While Cervantes writes about the “place whose name I do not care to remember,” you're seduced by the fairytale image of old-world Spain, one that continues to persist in the memory. Landscapes come straight from the author's narrative, revealing the subtleties and charms of La Mancha's deepest soul. Cervantes' greatest ability was to make an idealistic world seem real; so on the 400-year anniversary of his death, this tribute tour offers a journey into a surrealistic realm within Spain's ancient world.

Tour Review: Spain, Madrid, La Mancha, Castles, Windmills, Paradors

Don Quixote and La Mancha Odyssey

Search for Windmills, Paradors, and Castles

On this odyssey we sought to discover one of the most famous areas in Spain thanks to literature:   La Mancha. The route started near Toledo and was the setting for the adventures of Don Quixote, the character brought to life by Miguel de Cervantes. Along the way, we saw wide open plains and small mountain ranges with one of the region's more famous symbol: the windmills of La Mancha, visited Castles in Spain, Stayed at paradors, and explored the plains of La Mancha

Travel Review: Spain Tour, Madrid, Barcelona, Cadaques, Valencia, Cuenca Rock Formations, Sagrada Familia & Gaudi Tour, Alhambra

These travel agents did a yeoman's job, working with me to coordinate the details of our 14-day trip to Spain.  I had provided a lengthy list of places we wanted to go & sites we wanted to see.  As a traveler (vs. a tourist), I do a lot of research before contacting an agency, & typically want to check-out a few tourist attractions, but mostly want to visit other, off-the-beaten-path places.  I was disappointed that so many of the places on my list could not be included in our itinerary, but this is not unusual in my travel experience.  But I was even more disappointed to meet-up with our numerous guides at each of our city/town visits, who took us on standard walking tours of central city landmarks, many of which were not on my original list of places to visit!  In other words, places I wanted to visit on my original list were not possible because we were being shown the standard tourist fare.  We visited & learned the histories of more museums, artifacts, cathedrals and palaces than our brains & interest could bear.

Each of our guides was amazingly well informed about everything they showed us.  Their knowledge and pride in their work and of their country was palpable.  And, since my agent tried very hard to create an itinerary based on my list, I am assuming that "the system" isn't equipped to satisfy customized requests such as mine.

Spain Travel Review: Madrid, Seville, Granada, Royal Palace, Plaza de Espana, Alhambra, Flamenco Performance, Guadalquivir Boating

My husband and I were absolutely delighted with Zicasso's travel arrangements.  Our trip was perfect!

We had only 6 nights to spend in Spain.  We already had a loosely planned agenda (a few nights saved to meet up with friends, etc.) but we were anxious to see the country's architectural and cultural treasures and wanted to make the most of our time.   I contacted Zicasso and connected with our agent.  She worked within our time frame and managed to organize our trip so that we never felt rushed.  She found a balance between guided tours and free time to explore the cities on our own.  Our hotel accommodations were always centrally located and beautifully appointed.

Our agent personally called us to make sure that we had a good flight and easy transport to our first hotel in Madrid.  She gave us great suggestions re sightseeing off the beaten path, tapas, and nightlife.  She even negotiated car rental changes when we decided at the last minute to forego the train and continue our exploration of the country's olive groves and windmills!

A last word about our guides--we were so impressed with their knowledge of the rich history of Madrid, Seville, and Granada.  Their stories made us appreciate the diversity of the past, the importance of preserving ancient walls while making room for the present, and the possibilities for the future of Spain.

Spain Vacation Review: Seville, Madrid, Prado Museum, Local History, Six-Day Tour

My family of three, including a teenage boy, only had six days in Spain over Thanksgiving week. Our Zicasso travel partner helped us narrow down our itinerary to Seville and Madrid. He arranged all of our transportation, such as transfers from the airport/train station/hotels. The drivers were so courteous and always prompt. We always had a luxury Mercedes van. We landed in Madrid in the morning and went to the train station to take a three-hour ride to Seville. This worked out because check-in times for hotels are usually around 3pm. We chose first-class train tickets, which included access to the VIP lounge in case we had to wait.

The hotel suggested by our travel agent was charming and clean, and the front desk folks were very warm and welcoming. It had a daybed, so the three of us could comfortably fit in one room. The bathroom was updated and the water pressure was great!

Seville is stunning. Our agent arranged a flamenco show the night we arrived and provided many tapas dining recommendations. The next day we had a guide who took us to the royal palace and the cathedral. They arranged the ticket purchases ahead of time, so we stood in a short line and went into the palace right away. The guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The palace was amazing and the cathedral was a wonder. We learned a good deal of Spanish history. We had the afternoon on our own to walk through the park and see the esplanade. Seville felt very safe and we walked everywhere.

We took an early train back to Madrid. Our tour operator allowed us to choose our own hotel in Madrid because we wanted to use points. The service was great, and it was a very busy hotel.

The travel company arranged a tour of the Prado, the guide for which was excellent, very knowledgeable, and animated! We learned so much and felt as if we saw the major art pieces.

We had another guide give us a tour of the palace in Madrid and the famous plazas, and that was also wonderful. The guides spoke English very well and took pride in what they did. They also bought the tickets in advance so we didn’t have to wait in line.

We walked through the park and toured the Reina Sofia on our own. It was so nice to have someone take care of the details and we had a relaxing, stress-free vacation, while seeing most of the major sites.

We would definitely use this travel company on our next trip to Spain.

Review: Spain Tour, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Toledo, Granada, Alhambra, Sagrada Familia, Tapas and Wine Tour, Local Cuisine

Words can't explain just how important this trip was for my 90-year-old Uncle.  In 1944, he was a  U.S. soldier in Germany, and during that time, he had one week's leave from the Army.  He decided to visit Spain for that week, and he absolutely fell in love with the country.  He promised himself that one day he'd return.   Nearly 75 years later, I had the privilege of helping him make that dream come true.  However, I could never have made that trip as smooth and absolutely enjoyable and free of all stress that it was if it weren't for our travel planner and her associates at the travel agency.  They were careful and thoughtful in their assessment of what and how we needed to travel the country, given my Uncle's age.

The travel agency asked all the right questions, then created an amazing itinerary that encompassed all the cities and towns we wanted to experience without rushing from one place to another.  My Uncle did not want to be herded on a bus tour, nor did he want to sit on a bus with lots of other tourists and not be able to understand the tour guide.  He wanted private tours of major sites in each of the towns we visited and he wanted to be able to have resting time each day.  Additionally, he wanted four-star accommodations, rather than whatever accommodations a group tour was providing.

Our travel planner and her team created the most incredible vacation for my Uncle, that included professional, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable tour guides who were also personable and fun-loving people.   They all spoke excellent English besides their native Spanish, and had tickets to the most popular sites, bypassing huge long lines to get us into the facilities ahead of everyone.  They also provided wheelchair accommodations and made sure my Uncle had access to bathroom facilities when necessary.   I made sure each private tour guide received a generous tip for their wonderful services.

Additionally, I can't say enough about the accommodations that we had along the way.  They were all four to five star that all included an AMAZING delicious breakfast buffet each day.  I can still taste the wonderful cheeses, fruit, huevos, ham, chocolate croissants and perfect cappuccinos!  The presentation of each breakfast was outstanding!

We first visited Barcelona and had a two bedroom apartment that was absolutely perfect and located near food, fun and transportation. The staff was friendly and amazing, and everyone spoke English.   The apartment was five star all the way!  We had a wonderful tour with our guide where we got first class treatment, bypassing the long lines for the Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia, which was designed by famous architect Antonio Gaudi. Then she took us to the Old City of Barcelona where we walked on the same streets built by Romans.  My Uncle is still talking about that experience!

The next day, we boarded a bus with a small group of travelers to see Monseratte,  a Benedictine monk mountain retreat.  It was one of our highlights of the entire trip, and was quite emotional for my Uncle.  The views from Monseratte are absolutely breathtaking and I was able to get some fantastic photographs from the top of the mountain.  Absolutely recommend this day trip.  After we left Monseratte, we enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting and tapas at a family vineyard with our small group of about ten travelers.  We had so much fun and we all bonded as a group.  Such a wonderful way to end our day.

From Barcelona, we were flown to Granada, where we stayed in another fantastic five-star hotel adorned with Marble and decorative rod iron throughout the facility.  It was also in the heart of the town and easy access to shopping and sites.  We took a taxi up the mountain to the La Hambra where we met our next tour guide who gave us a wonderful tour of the city within a city.  What a site to see and such history to learn!   Later in the day, when we returned to Granada, we walked the city and shopped- lots of great shopping- and had a wonderful dinner at an outside cafe.  This is definitely a trendy, upscale shopping area.

Next, our travel agency arranged for a private driver to take us from Granada to Seville because the train was inoperable and we would have had to take a bus for part of the nearly three-hour trip to Seville.  Our private ride was smooth, relaxing and our driver was very personable.  He also had a very clean, comfortable car.  I highly recommend this mode of transportation!

Once in Seville, we checked into our hotel- yet, another spectacular accommodation- including a rooftop pool and bar that overlooked the entire city of Seville.  The rooms are spotless and I absolutely love the bathrooms, equipped with glass showers, large overhead showerheads and excellent craftsmanship.  Our evening Tapas and wine tour with our guide was so memorable.  She took us for a walk through her neighbourhood of narrow cobblestone streets and rod iron balconies to see various historical sites such as a Music museum and conservatory, an ancient breathtaking Cathedral that was still operational, and the town plaza where neighbours would meet and children would play.  The area was so quaint, we didn't want to leave.  Moreso, our guide had arranged for us to go from one Tapas bar to another in the neighbourhood- never waiting in any lines- and tasting the most exquisite Tapas and wine/beer we'd ever had on the trip!  She paid all expenses and ordered the food and drink throughout the night.

Sadly, we had to leave Seville and take the highspeed train to Madrid, where we stayed for several days in an absolutely beautiful hotel on Jorge Juan Avenue.  Newly renovated with an old European flair of gorgeous white marble everywhere, beautifully decorated lobby and bar, a lower-level cellar that was renovated into this amazing kitchen, breakfast buffet with old brick and wood decor, including an old iron stove, and central to the whole hotel was a gorgeous rod iron cage-elevator that Europe is so well-known for.   Can't speak highly enough of this hotel!

Madrid is a very large city and quite majestic.  They have a large central park in the midst of the city and it's filled with people walking their dogs, scooters, joggers, and kayakers surrounding a beautiful small lake adorned with marble monuments.  We really enjoyed eating ice cream and walking in this park, and also saw a lovely art exhibit while there.  Our second day in Madrid included a 25-minute train ride to Toledo, where we met our tour guide who showed us all over this quaint historical town.  She grew up in Toledo and knew everyone, so we got private tours of little businesses that would make gold jewelry by hand, as well as a six-generation business that handcrafted amazing pottery with 24K gold inlay.  The town is also known for its steel and sword making.  We saw amazing swords and gold- lots of gold.  Absolutely a must for gifts of gold or steel products at amazingly low prices.   We truly loved the Cathedrals and narrow winding cobblestone streets of Toledo.  It's a small town with a rich religious history of various religious backgrounds. Now I know where "Holy Toledo!" came from!

Overall, the trip was a life changer.  My Uncle shed a tear when we had to leave because he enjoyed this trip more than any other place he's ever visited in his life.  At 90 years old, he said he is now complete.  To our travel planner and everyone at this company, I can't thank you enough for providing such a memorable gift for an old man who wanted nothing more than to have one last trip to a beautiful country he has never forgotten.  Muchas gracias!

Luxury Portugal & Spain Family Trip Review: Porto, Fatima, Obidos, Lisbon, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Sintra Castle, Douro Valley
Wow, what a trip! My mother and I had been talking about seeing Portugal and Spain for many years but with Covid and children on the way, my wife and I could not commit to a good time to travel. We endeavored to travel shortly after the birth of our third child. My parents, my wife and I, and our six week old daughter travelled to Spain and Portugal with the assistance of this travel company. You would think a six week old provides some large obstacles to international travel but thanks largely due to our travel agency, we had nothing but ease and comfort throughout our journey. Our travel company anticipated all issues that we might have and was prepared to make adjustments as needed during our 11 night trip to Spain and Portugal. Everything was seamless, no waiting around or late tours. Our drivers and guides were all professionals who took extra effort to ensure we had time to change the baby or prepare her food as needed. And, if we needed to make any alterations to our plans or had questions about our tour, our travel agency provided a Whatsapp number that I simply needed texted for a quick reply.Firstly, we loved the itinerary. We saw everything that we felt we needed to see in our four cities. In each of them, we had at least one short tour to see the city itself and a longer tour where we ventured out to see a specific site outside the city proper. Each of the recommended sites were special in their own way and certainly worth the extra travel time to get to explore them, the Douro Valley north of Porto, Sintra Castle on the coast of Lisbon, Cordoba outside Seville, and Toledo to the south west of Madrid. There was a lot of moving on this trip but that is to be expected when traveling with an itinerary (a newborn to boot) and not going to a relaxing island.Besides our travel company planning the perfect trip, we had three other issues that worked out in our favor on this vacation. We were fortunate to have the world's easiest baby for one. We also chose to use the Doona stroller (a baby car seat and stroller in one) that worked perfectly for our tours and car rides as well as one way on the plane ride home!! The third was that all of our tour guides, drivers, and even the countries of Spain/Portugal were extremely helpful for those traveling with a small child. We were given extra assistance in the airports, on tours in the rain, and at all of our hotels to make traveling with a baby simple and painless.
