Detailed Description

At first, Spanish wine dazzles with its diversity. While the grapes being used are relatively standard across the country, a Priorat is quite different from a Toro. When you explore more, there are more subtle differences, like when La Rioja and Ribero del Duero are compared through multiple vintages. Tempranillo is the dominant grape, but the cultivation methods contrast across the Spanish DO (denominacion de origen) regions. And like all good wine countries, it is the diversity of terroir that proves most memorable. This handcrafted tour visits Spain’s most important wine regions and has you tasting the differences. By connecting you to people and places, it helps you really understand Spanish wine, with the story told by those that define it.

Visit Spain, and you can visit vineyards, perhaps do a tasting, and certainly try wines in the bars. This tour is packed with private appointments at places normally closed to the public. You will taste with the winemakers and cellar-masters, and then tour the vineyards to see how and why the wine turns out differently. Unlike the bars, you will get to taste multiple vintages as winemakers dust off bottles from the cellar to open. Where you get to taste will also be memorable, be it the steep terraced hills of Priorat, the lush landscapes of Penedes, or the rustic charm of Ribero del Duero.

There are four overnight destinations, and most of your days are spent in wine country, stopping in villages and vineyards. You will stay in cities and towns, so there is plenty to see and do beyond just the wine. Although Spain has 11 DO regions and two DOCa regions, the highest category under Spanish wine regulations, this tour focuses on the most important while also a providing chance to explore upcoming, new-world-style wines as well. There will also be plenty of food en route with each region showcasing their culinary specialties, found everywhere from pintxos bars to fine-dining restaurants.

Base yourself in Barcelona for the first three nights, a vibrant city with all manner of world-class monuments to check out. Spend the first evening with your guide in Bari Gotic to explore the wine bars and tune your palette to the different regions. On day two, you will explore the heart of Penedes where crisp, sparkling wines are a good palette cleanser for the heavier reds that will come. Sample the aromatic Cava whites while looking over the vines, enjoy a Cava and food pairing, and then weave back to Barcelona, perhaps with a stop in Sitges. Priorat is a DOCa region and the focus of day three, producing fine exclusive red wines that demand good cellaring. They are boutique wines that can be hard to find outside Spain, so indulge at two wineries.

Fly to Burgos, a beautiful medieval city with a cathedral you won’t quite believe. Now you will be into the velvety Tempranillo wines that are synonymous with Spain, the Ribero del Duero the region now rivaling La Rioja as the rumors continue that it will soon receive DOC status. With two days at your disposal, you can relax and really get to know the medieval city, as well as visit four to five different wineries. Next, it will be La Rioja, and you will descend into Laguardia’s aromatic wine cellars and feast on an atmosphere where everything revolves around wine. You cannot rush things in La Rioja because nothing really happens to speed time, your languid morning giving way to lunchtime wine, and then more wine.

In the next two days, you will visit a selection of vineyards ranging from world-famous producers to small farms that preserve handpicked and handcrafted methods. The next day, you will head to Pamplona, an old city of towering walls and cute squares. The city is famous for the Running of the Bulls and in the heart of the Navarre Valley, where experimental vineyards and part of a wave of new-world wine in old-world wine country. End your trip in Madrid, where sightseeing meets with decorous wine bars, and you can taste those regions that have not been featured thus far – Toro is just one to watch out for. Being the capital city, Madrid also provides good flight connections as your ten days with Spanish wine comes to an end. Throughout the tour, guides will assist in shipping your purchases back home. Travel Review: Luxury Spain Tour, Barcelona, Granada, Cordoba, Madrid, Sevilla, Toledo, Ronda, Food & Wine Tours, 17-Day Trip

Perfect! This was our first experience using Zicasso, and we were extremely well pleased with the concept, and with the company we selected. Our planning for this trip of 17 days in October began in January, when we first selected them among the companies we were referred to, and outlined our plans, desired itinerary, and interests in an extensive telephone conversation with the rep.He and we were in frequent touch by email and phone over the next two months to refine our program. We decided to drop one city from our itinerary; we altered our original flight plans for arriving/departing Spain, added/subtracted some activities; approved places where we might want a guided tour and those where we would not. Throughout, the rep was an effective and capable advisor, offering suggestions (include a visit to Toledo), using his expertise to recommend the best itinerary for the trip based on train/air times and choke points (how to include a stop in Ronda); taking local holidays into account, even quickly preparing an alternate itinerary at one point when it appeared our party would have to be just 2 rather than 4.We signed a contract and paid a deposit in March to finalize our plans. In ensuing months, the company worked to nail down the details: train and air travel within country; pickups/drop-offs at hotels/airports; car service for excursions by road; reservations at hotels we had chosen based on the rep's recommendations; tickets for museums or events, especially those that often need to be obtained in advance. We had chosen from the start to do our own research and selection of restaurants, but the company also offered an extensive list of possibilities in the various places were visiting; and once we made our decisions, the company kindly made all the reservations for us, fitting the exact times in with our schedule of other things. All this was magically and effectively done for us without a lot of effort or time on our part, so by October 1, there was little to worry about except boarding the plane. From the moment we landed at Barcelona, to the date we departed sixteen (actually seventeen) days later, everything went like clockwork. It became clear that the rep and his team were personally committed to ensure that things would proceed without a hitch. By reports from drivers and guides, they often knew before we did that we might be running a little late somewhere, and made small adjustments accordingly.  Of course, there were minor snags - in one case, due to a miscommunication between a guide and a driver, we couldn't find our driver, and he couldn't find us; and in the jammed ancient streets of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, we were surprised to find a vehicle could only get as close as two blocks from the front door of our hotel -- but those were rare exceptions.  In addition, we and the rep communicated as needed by phone and text, for example when we decided to cancel a reservation at one restaurant. More important, when our airline cancelled our departure flight with one day's notice, we of course had to work out our alternate flight with the airlines directly, but the company took some pressure off by getting our stay at our hotel extended (and of course adjusting our transport to the airport).Hotels: In the four places where we had set up overnight stays (Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla, and Madrid), for which the company had recommended the hotels, we were very happy with their choices. We had expressed a preference for smaller hotels  in a historic building, and the rep's recommendations did not disappoint - everywhere, we found wonderful accommodation with friendly, helpful staff (most also had their own restaurant). After the trip, we tried to agree on a favorite - but all were favorites, albeit with different features.Guides: Last, but most important, was the rep's success in selecting such excellent guides for our city, museum, and food/wine tours. In each case, our guide was a native of the city we were in; in each case, they were not only expert in their fields but had a lot of great, interesting information to impart about local customs and legends, shopping, and institutions. Our guides added immensely to our enjoyment and learning from the trip – they made a world of difference. The "bottom line" is that if/when we plan more travel in Spain, we will definitely work with Zicasso, and hope to have the chance to work again with this company and their rep.

Spain & France Tour Review: San Sebastian, Alquezar, Barcelona, St. Emilion, Winery, 12-Night Trip

Our trip itinerary was titled “Memorable Trip to Spain” by our travel company representative Ana.  Her planning and coordination of our excursions, car rental, hotels and some meals were flawless.  Everything was planned perfectly and went like clockwork.  The excursion guides were local to the area and were extremely knowledgeable about the history, customs, and interesting facts of the area we were in.   Being local allowed us to see sites far beyond the normal tourists.  For example, at a winery in St. Emilion, France we were able to have a private tour in one of the oldest wineries in the area with the owner of the vineyard.  After the tour he also showed us through his house.

Ana and her team were able to answer questions we had immediately.  We questioned how to drop the rental car off in Barcelona and not only did they send directions, but they also sent a picture of the facility.  While driving from San Sebastian to Alquezar we asked for lunch stop recommendations and they directed us to a beautiful location on a lake for lunch, something we would have never found on our own.

After our initial contact with Ana, we emailed and talked on the phone.  We established a budget, a rough itinerary of stops, a rough duration, and the class of hotels we wanted.  From there Ana put together a list of excursions at each stop and a list of 3 or 4 hotels that we could choose from.  Once everything was decided on, she also gave us a list of recommended restaurants we could review and make reservations for our evening meals that were on our account.   Finally, about a week before our trip she called to go over the itinerary and answer any questions we had.  The entire process was simple and easy thanks to Ana and her team.

Finally, if you have not already noticed, we had a fantastic and memorable time on out trip to France and Spain.  Thank you again for putting this together for us.

Travel Agent Review: Spain, Barcelona, Madrid, Penedes Region, Wine & Tapas Tours, Manchego Cheese Making, History & Culture

My wife and I had a wonderful trip to Spain thanks to the tour specialist and his company.  We spent 4 nights in Barcelona and 3 nights in Madrid.  The tour specialist set up activities for us 3 days in Barcelona and 2 days in Madrid.  Included in the package were hotel stays at each city and train ticket from Barcelona to Madrid.  Both hotels he picked were great.  Barcelona was more of a bed and breakfast with a very cool ambience similar to Barcelona and Madrid was a little more modern.

Our itinerary in Spain consisted of an evening of wine and tapas tour through 4 places through Barcelona, a tour of a winery and cava vineyard in the Penedes region outside Barcelona, and a tour of the historical sites throughout Barcelona.  In Madrid we had another evening of wine and tapas  through 4 places through Madrid, and tours of a cheese making facility, vineyard, and an olive oil producer outside of Madrid.

All the tour guides were great, most felt like you were visiting your friend in another city and they were showing you around.  All were very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had and recommended places to go throughout our stay.  The tour specialist was even a tour guide for us one day as we visited the Penedes region.

The tour specialist also recommended many places to dine and see while we were Spain prior to the trip.

Review: Luxury Tour of Spain & France, Paris, Bordeaux, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Rioja, Fine Dining, Tapas Tours

Our travel agency did an exceptional job on our custom trip from Barcelona, Spain, up to Rioja, then to Bilbao and San Sebastian, Spain, then to Bordeaux and finally Paris.  This was a trip all about food and wine and our travel agency ensured a flawless trip.  Our travel specialists worked very hard to find us the best hotels, a very balanced selection of dining, from exceptional Michelin star dining to various Tapas Crawls in Spain.  Our travel agency arranged all of our transportation needs, again with perfect timing.  Our private tours were all made with personable English speaking guides, and we were able to get into some very excellent vineyards.  Overall, I highly recommend this company to customize an awesome trip that takes the worry out of traveling overseas.

Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia, Basque Country, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Museum, Sagrada Familia, 2-Week Trip
We just returned from a wonderful 2-week trip to Spain with emphasis on Barcelona, Basque Country and Madrid. The travel agent, Rosa, was an absolute gem during the planning stage, and provided thoughtful guidance and immediate responses to any questions regarding our ambitious itinerary.  Accommodations in Barcelona, San Sebastian, Bilbao and Madrid were top-notch, in addition to being fun and unique. All included sumptuous breakfasts, and were centrally-located to attractions, dining and activities - we walked everywhere! Transportation between cities (car and train) was comfortable and efficient. Our trip was highlighted by our visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao - we cannot recommend it enough. Sightseeing tours in all locations were detailed and informative, and featured pleasant and knowledgeable local guides for our 1/2-day and full-day trips. We highly recommend this travel company for any Spain-bound travelers!

Travel Review: Custom Family Vacation to Spain, Barcelona, Granada, Alhambra, Generalife, Sevilla, Cordoba, Madrid, Toledo,...
We had a great time. For me it was an opportunity to revisit Barcelona and Seville and to visit some must see sights in other cities for the first time. For my 38 Y.O. son… he is still raving and bloging about it. The prearranged tours and transfers went well. Without a group, we were able to have a lot of free time to explore on our own and take advantage of some of the restaurant recommendations provided by this Spain tour operator. The hotels were all good and well located; location is very important to me. I lost my sunglasses in Seville. The tour operator confirmed that the Hotel Las Casas de la Judería had found them in our room and arranged for them to be sent to my home. I received the glasses in good shape. A much appreciated extra service. In all, it was an A+ experience. Thank you, Peter G Sandbank
