Scotland Tour Review: Palaces, Lochs, Castles, Museums, Sword-Fabricating Forge, Local Cuisine, 13 Days

After 15 years of vacationing on small, live-aboard, scuba-diving ships around the world, we wanted our first land-based tour to be extraordinary. We sought a plan to include all drivers, transfers, and hotels, and an itinerary to include private walking and car tours of culturally significant sites and museums. Our goal was to cover, on our first trip to Scotland, the Scottish lowland and highlands, significant city centers, as well as the legendary palaces, lochs, castles, and museums. Moreover, my husband requested we focus on the Pict time period, especially the carved stones, swords, and other fighting devices used throughout the last 3,000 years of Scotland’s “recent” past.

Our travel company was one of three firms we solicited for a proposal on a luxury vacation in Scotland. Only this Zicasso company hit these targets out of the box with a much better agenda than the competition and very competitive pricing. Moreover, their tour included a recommendation for a two-hour sword-fighting lesson, followed the next day by a visit to a private sword-fabricating forge!!

We returned home four days ago from our remarkable 13-day trip. The highlights of our trip are too exhaustive to even list. Three fantasy-fulfilling high points comprised three nights in a luxury castle bed and breakfast on the west coast, and visits to Inner Hebrides islands, including Iona, where I purchased two sterling Celtic penannular brooches. This was topped off with the commissioning of two swords from the forge, a Claymore and a basket hilt to be custom made using ancient techniques that will result in a pair of one-off customized designs including scabbard carvings and decorated multi-layer battle-ready blades.

Overall, the tour used amazing guides, including two who wore kilts and full Scottish dress throughout their tours, provided a plethora of castles, and enough alone time to explore the local area and relax while eating the best meat and seafood imaginable, culminating end-to-end in the best vacation of our lives!!

Based on our experience, I cannot entreat you strongly enough to at least get an offer of services from this travel company. We submit you will not be disappointed in the offer or the fulfillment.

Luxury Scotland & England Vacation Review: London, Cotswolds, York, Isle of Skye, Edinburgh, Lochs, Castles, Scottish Highlands
Our party of 4 just returned from our 2 week tour of England. London was our first destination. It was great from the start. We had a private driver and tour guides the whole time. Angela was our guide for England and Jeffrey was our guide in Scotland. Both were awesome and took exceptional care of us. We drove about 1000 miles from London up through the Cotswolds, York and then into Scotland, and all the way up to the Isle of Skye and the Lochs. We ended our trip in Edinburgh. Everything was customized to our particular interests and just wonderful. We stayed in castles along the way for the full on Downton Abbey experience and visited some sites from the Outlander movies. I would be hard pressed to say what my favorite things were, since everywhere we went was amazing. We did love our nights at the castles. The Castle near Chester-le-Street, the Castle near Girvan and the Castle near Fort William were magical. It was a vacation of a life time. I can't say enough about our guide Jeffrey in Scotland. I've never seen anyone more bent on pleasing his guests. All we had to do was mention a place or stop or whatever and he'd make it happen. A more knowledgeable and purely nice person you'll never meet.I hope to get another chance to tour with Jeffrey and this travel company. We're already thinking about next year.

Scotland Tour Review: Glasgow, Oban, Tobermory, Iona Island, Barra, Ullapool, Scenery, History, Culture, 10-Day Travel
It was a fabulous trip in every way living up to, and exceeding, expectations.  The travel company designed a holiday which included all the places I wanted to see and incorporated the activities I wanted to experience.  My friend and I took the train from Glasgow to Oban where we stayed for one night in the first of the hotels booked for us by Jeff. Jeff had planned and booked all our wonderful accommodation throughout the trip. Although we wanted to spend the first and last few days of our holiday "independently" Jeff still booked hotels during those periods and was really helpful advising about other travel arrangements, etc.We caught the ferry from Oban (just a few minutes walk from the hotel) to Mull, landing at Craignure and then heading for Tobermory where we stayed for a few nights. Here we did two good walks from the hotel and went by bus to the other end of the island to take the ferry to Iona and back as a day trip.  We crossed back to Oban and stayed at the same hotel for one night and it was here that our guide from the travel agency collected us.  Our wonderful guide was to drive us in a very comfortable vehicle from south to north of the Outer Hebridean islands. We crossed from Oban to Barra. I'll mention here that all the ferry crossings were full of interest - especially seeing the happy pod of dolphins swimming at speed with us! We drove through the islands, staying on Barra, North Uist, Harris and Lewis. We saw breath-taking scenery, met warm and welcoming hosts and were able to see wildlife, historic buildings and other structures, learn about the history, culture and language of the islands and geology.  We also had the opportunity to do walks and strolls and visit galleries. We crossed from Stornoway to Ullapool, back on the mainland, where we had three "independent " days (staying at the hotel booked by Jeff).  Two wonderful longer walks here, visits to galleries in Ullapool and a live folk music evening at a local pub. Unfortunately we had to then go home!  By coach and train to Glasgow via Inverness where we spent a couple of hours in the central area (excellent left luggage facility there) - a good return journey seeing more of  beautiful Scotland en route.

Travel Review: Scotland Vacation, Edinburgh, Ullapool, Orkney Islands

in 2017 Zicasso paired us with an agent for our trip to Bavaria.  He was absolutely the best any traveler could have as an agent .  I was expecting to be paired with a U.K. travel agent for this trip, and was surprised that this company was located here in the U.S.  There was never any way that this company could live up to our last agent's attention to detail.  He had even provided us with a prepaid cell phone with his number already listed in contacts for us to use.  As far as this travel company goes, the two agents I delt with were helpful and answered all questions I had.  I basically planned the trip myself, and had them book the hotel and tours.  There were a couple of mix ups with the tours, but I don't know if that was our tour company or the travel company's mix up.  It was all straitened out though,  I pay very close attention to details when planning our trips, which has helped us avoid problems in the past.  My one complaint on the planning for this was that I had to tell our agent to put us on the 5 day tour leaving from Edinburgh, rather than taking a train to Inverness to meet this tour in route.  She didn't even know the tour company had a 5 day Orkney tour from Edinburgh, even though it is clearly listed on their website, and the tour company is listed as a partner on this travel agency's website.  Even though this travel agency has an excellent reputation, I would probably not use them again for future trips to the U.K.

England & Scotland Review: Couple's Luxury Vacation, London, Bath, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, Beatles Tour, Scenery
We had a wonderful time visiting London, Bath, Liverpool, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye. We had been to England twice before but both times were predominantly spent in or around London. This time we had delightful stays in Bath and Liverpool. Our visit to Scotland, especially our 3 day tour of the Highlands and the Isle of Skye was magical in so many ways. The scenery spectacular, the people friendly and fun to be around, and the destinations well-planned and well-timed. Our two adult children who reviewed the finalized travel plan provided by this travel team were amazed by the detail of the planning which included all transportation, lodging, private tours, tour guides, and one small group tour in Scotland. I believe they have been inspired to follow in our footsteps. We would highly recommend this travel team to anyone who has not yet had the opportunity to fully appreciate a customized travel experience in the British Isles and Ireland. It was our first time and I cannot imagine doing it again any other way. Kudos to our trip planners for making this such a memorable trip.

Luxury UK Trip Review: England & Scotland, Seaham Beach Sea Glass, Hiking Isle of the Skye & Cotswold, Edinburgh, Blooming Heather
Our trip to the UK was slightly complicated and involved a lot of physical traveling between both Scotland and England. I worked with a trip planner from start to finish and although there were a few hiccups along the way, our overall experience was wonderful. We traveled from Washington, DC to London. From there we went to Edinburgh, Inverness, The Isle of Skye, Glasgow, Seaham, and the Cotswolds. And, the first week we traveled with another couple. Our planner had a lot of planning to do which involved a lot of moving pieces. He did an excellent job. Along the way, we took a train, had drivers, and also drove ourselves with a rental car for several days. At each stop, our reservations, drivers and activities were all carefully organized. The only exception was our rental car reservation. When we got to Inverness, the rental car place had given our car away, because they had the wrong information and thought we were picking it up at 9:00 am instead of 5pm, which would have been impossible because we were driving from Edinburgh that day and didn't leave until 10:00am. The problem came when the rental car place told us they had NO cars for us and would not have one the next day either. Fortunately, we had an awesome guide/driver who handled the entire situation with professionalism. He ended up staying with us until he had secured a car for us from another car rental agency for the next morning. Our guide/driver took care of everything allowing us to stay stress-free:) My husband and his brother were playing golf the next day and needed the car to get to the course, so our guide/driver arranged for a prepaid cab to pick them up to take them to the car rental agency. The guide/driver really went above and beyond what he was hired to do and should receive kudos for turning a potentially big problem into barely an inconvenience. Also, the car we ended up receiving was a lovely Mercedes upgrade from our original car hire. Our driver/guide was also an excellent guide in Edinburg and full of information about Scotland and that city in particular. He was fun, easy to talk with and full of ideas. He heard we loved Outlander, the series, so made it a point to stop at many of the places where Outlander was filmed!  We also had a one day guide in London. She was wonderful, and full of information about the history of England, especially London. Our driver from Seaham to the Cotswolds and he, too, was a wealth of information (former teacher) and was very interesting to talk to. The drivers and guides really helped to enhance the overall experience of being in another country. We stayed in a variety of hotels, all with their own uniqueness. Our favorite was probably the hotel on the north coast of England. This hotel also had a spa with great facilities. The people were amazingly nice and accommodating. Our room was absolutely beautiful and large. We are sea glass collectors and Seaham Beach is known for its treasures from the sea, because of glass factories that used to operate in the area a long time ago. We found lots of sea glass so Seaham did not disappoint. The Isle of Skye in Scotland and the Cotswolds in England were our two favorite places . . . of course they were the farthest apart from one another .  . . Skye is an island in the upper west corner of Scotland and the Cotswolds are about 2 hours west of London. In two weeks, we traveled many, many miles, but we really wanted to get a feel for both countries.  To do a trip like this on our own would have been very difficult. Using Zicasso and this tour company made our two weeks so easy! The issues we had along the way were all made right by the travel partners involved without question. In fact, one of the most impressive things that happened, was when we got to the last three days of our trip . . . by the time we arrived in the Cotswolds we were tired of touring and traveling from place to place. I called our planner to tell him we wanted to cancel our trip to Bath and Stonehenge.  . . all we wanted to do was hike. All of the time it took to travel from place to place had taken away time we had to hike and explore. He was able to get us a full refund for money spent on that final tour to Bath and Stonehenge, and that was greatly appreciated:)Once we returned, the planner called to go over everything about our trip and to ask for constructive feedback on how things could have been better. We talked for over an hour and in my opinion, his concern and attention to detail is what makes this company so successful. We are looking forward to working with him again to plan a trip that concentrates more on hiking and revisiting the places we fell in love with. We also want to include Wales next time and he has already sent some suggestions.
